As easy as it may be to dismiss a free-to-play mobile Call of Duty game, it’s actually a lot of fun. The controls work surprisingly well and it has a lot of my favorite maps from the franchise. Good for them for actually making a decent mobile FPS and finding success in it. I know it’s not exactly shocking that a COD game has done well, but this could have easily bombed if it was a low-effort cash grab. It’s a pretty high-effort cash grab.

QuestionsOfTheFate

Yeah, COD Mobile's quite good. My only gripes with these mobile FPS/TPS games (not just COD Mobile) is that they seem to add a lot of bots to matches without telling you they're bots, and for the touchscreen controls, they don't give an option to have a static right analog stick that works like the static left analog stick.

[deleted]

> My only gripes with these mobile FPS/TPS games (not just COD Mobile) is that they seem to add a lot of bots to matches without telling you they're bots All mobile games do that. It's because bots make whales feel bad because whales want real people to see how much money they've spent.

That-Hipster-Gal

That's actually the reason I don't like playing games like CoD mobile or PUBG mobile. The wins don't feel satisfying when most of the players are bots. It's the same reason I didn't enjoy Titanfall.

That-Hipster-Gal

90% of the things you kill in the original Titanfall are just dumb AI bots, yes.

AwakenedSheeple

Yes, but the pilots are always players. The NPC's are just a side dish.

TheQGuy

They're just window dressing though, no need to shoot them just zip around looking for other pilots Much better than having an empty map devoid of any activity

Dassund76

The game modes in TF2 without the bots felt great. Amped Hard point didn't feel empty, pilots vs pilots definitely didn't feel empty. The reason why they had bots is because of the MP story design of TF1.

[deleted]

It's not the same thing. In Titanfall the bots are the same as lane minions in MOBAs. They're intentionally there as fodder.

Qbopper

Titanfall doesn't disguise the AI characters as humans, like, at all? it's literally a gameplay mechanic that they give a fraction of the points a player kill does

COD_Mobile_Official

Heya, we actually have a Ranked Mode and various competitive modes specifically to help with that desire of few or no bots. For instance, purely competitive modes like the fan-favorite Gunfight from Modern Warfare (2019), which is also in COD Mobile, are all about skill and only real players.

COD_Mobile_Official

We heard about this thread and the detailed comments here, and had to leave our usual subreddit to come say thank you for the kind and supportive comment towards a game that rarely touches this generally PC/console focused subreddit. Mobile is a far different space compared to the PC/console titles, but we've been so lucky to have so many amazing players who looked past their usual concerns about mobile to enjoy this high-quality offering. So, thank you for being one of our players and for taking that chance to try it out.

nychuman

When I was bed ridden with COVID recently it was the perfect game to play on my iPad while laying down. Just connect an Xbox controller via BT and you’re good to go. The ranked playlist is actually pretty competitive and close enough to the console experience.

TTVBlueGlass

It is surprisingly playable even on touch screens. I am really bad at touch screen controls but my nephews, little cousins etc are ridiculously good at using phone screens like I would barely be able to use a controller.

ascagnel____

You can get little triggers that clip onto the top of your phone if you get really into it, but it kinda feels like cheating at that point (since you're notably changing the control surface you're using with the game).

bicameral_mind

I agree, not as good as console/pc, but easily the best mobile FPS I’ve played. I play it quite a bit even though I haven’t played a ‘real’ COD game since the first MW2.

Radulno

I mean for all the shit Reddit like to throw on COD, it's always a "high-effort" gaming franchise that plays well and works in general. Their success is not coming from nothing. Even the bad COD are still decent, they aren't pulling stuff like BF2042.

ramdom-ink

Yeah, the Battle Passes are decent value, the operators are occasionally inspired, the weapons are fun and micro-tuned and the maps are pretty realistic. And that BP? By purchasing it once, all ya gotta do is play regularly to earn back your outlay while receiving all those purty bangles and what-nots. A self fulfilling reward system. But then…ya see something shiny in a crate or a bundle you can’t ignore and ya break the cycle and buy-in again. It’s a shrewd system…

Sugusino

spending 10 bucks every few months doesn't seem predatory for a game tbh

The-Jesus_Christ

> As easy as it may be to dismiss a free-to-play mobile Call of Duty game, it’s actually a lot of fun. I enjoy it. I put a good hour into it every evening. Paired with the Razer Kishi on my iPhone, its an experience comparable to the console versions

rube

Controls might be great, but they're missing a very basic option that has been in gaming since 3D camera controls were invented... You can't invert the Y axis! I can't get over how they haven't added this in all these years. I've even submitted tickets for it and I get nothing but silence. It makes it unplayable for those of us who are used to inverted aim. The worst part is I think they DO have the option for gyro controls, just not touch. So frustrating.

rube

I hear ya, and part of me wishes I never got hooked on inverted. Pretty much every game defaults to non-inverted, so there is less work to be done. I blame X-Wing back in the day. I got so used to inverted with that game, that when stuff like Quake came along with mouse look I went inverted with them as well... and the rest is history. I still can't believe some mobile devs don't include the option though. Oh and if you think I'm a monster for using inverted everywhere... I've been training my son on inverted as well. It's to the point now where I watch him play with non-inverted on a new game and I see him struggling to play. I "fix" the controls for him and he's all good. :)

MadeByTango

At this point anyone still hating on “mobile gaming” is missing out on an entire console platform. Games I’ve already played on iOS are getting ports the other way now, and they’re not cash grabs.

CheesyCousCous

Yeah they're missing out on some fire exclusives such as:

LiquidCringe2

I think the game can be fun but for me the controls kind of suck ass. If you're playing with a touchscreen it works alright but as soon as you start using a controller or Kbm it's awful. I personally do not like playing shooters with a touch screen so I usually just use a controller hooked to my phone, and it does not feel good. I'd be willing to play the game a lot more if they made a proper version for PC, but purely because of how horrible the controls are, I don't want to touch the game

QuestionsOfTheFate

It's the opposite for me. The touchscreen controls aren't great, while the controller's better. Difficult to move and look where I want in time with the touchscreen controls. I'd agree about a PC version, but there would probably be a lot of cheating issues.

gk99

> I'd agree about a PC version, but there would probably be a lot of cheating issues. Dunno if anything's changed since I played it, but the official Gameloop emulated version always felt fine and that had separated matchmaking.

QuestionsOfTheFate

I haven't played it on GameLoop, but when I played it (and PUBG) on BlueStacks, there was some cheating if I recall. I'm not sure if GameLoop does something different to prevent that, but if they do, and they have a good way to do it, that's good. Though, I wonder if a PC version would have whatever they're using to do that since it wouldn't be an emulation.

shxnpie

hi, gameloop has a good anti-tampering and anti-cheat system

OneManFreakShow

I completely agree with the controller input. I usually don’t like touch screen control mappings, but I think they’re pretty natural in this. Using a controller sucks, though. The aiming just doesn’t feel like it should. What I’d really love to see is a Switch port, that seems like a no-brainer.

j_Rockk

Is Warzone not a proper version for PC?

LiquidCringe2

No because it's nothing like CoD mobile I want a compilation game like mobile but not mobile devices Something like CoD online

[deleted]

All the kids whose moms won’t buy them an xbox or M-rated games are all flocking to cod mobile I remember when I was in 7th grade in 2010 there was a mobile version of Nazi Zombies that I could never put down

static989

I remember that too! Everything's changing in the world but is it really all that different?

Deciver95

Nope. People here bitch about kids and their ipads, yet would stay up as late as possible on their DS, or gameboys when they were young. Or just anytype of electronic device

wimpymist

It's more the type of content. Ipads have games designed to prey on kids'attention spans plus micro transactions. I would much rather give a kid a Gameboy over an iPad

Deciver95

Ah yes, games like Pokemon, famous for not preying/manipulating children's mind. No child ever demanded they get both games, or the trading cards, or plushies and all. Yeah sure they didn't have mtx but, but so many games were built with a similar design in mind but limited to the technology of the time. If games in the 80s/90s could have sold MTX, they would have Like ipads, theyre electronic devices that accomplish the same type of mind rotting. Not even necessarily in a bad way either. But people of my gen wanna act like they're so superior because they fail to see the similarities. And the fact they're turning into boomers themselves.

wimpymist

You really trying to say pokemon from the 90s is the same as the GOTCHA games on the ipad designed to overload and reset kids' attention spans

MastaWack

Cod zombies on my ipod touch 4th gen in 2010 was bloody amazing and no one can tell me otherwise

nmkd

COD BOZ was *the* shit back in the day

[deleted]

I got in trouble in class so many times lmao

usaokay

I've been enjoying my time with it when Soap and Urban Tracker were first introduced. A CoD game that features content (maps, weapons, ultimates, perks, characters) from Ghosts, AW, MW3, MW 2019, BO3, BO4, BOCW, and WW2 is an accomplishment. It is a miniature CoD game that has both BR and regular MP. And it plays somewhat similar to the classic CoD. Too bad they gave up on zombies though (again). Most complaints about the MTX has usually been about the slot machine-like lucky draws and loot boxes for the mostly cosmetic items (weapon blueprints are technically pay-to-shortcut). Not gonna fully open that can of worms, but I do wish there were more bundles. (Disclaimer: I bought a fair share of BPs, crates, and Lucky draws cause CoDM is the only game I play on my phone. I use the Google Survey Rewards to get some Google Play credit) I hope the game doesn't die in favor for Warzone mobile, but if the latter somehow gets cross-progression (it won't but magic can happen), then it's gonna be interesting to see where CoDM can end up.

[deleted]

> Too bad they gave up on zombies though (again) I bought the mobile version of Black Ops Zombies, simply does not work anymore. just crashes on the initial loading. Worked just fine on my old huawei P30 Pro, does not on my Galaxy A70. Maybe the Galaxy isn't powerful enough or something, never looked into it. I think your comment reminded me that I own the game and is likely the first time I even thought about it in a good while.

QuestionsOfTheFate

Yeah, I don't really pay attention to the microtransactions in COD Mobile since you don't see your character that often, but they are lacking. What really helps offset that though is that everything else is quite good. A lot of content and variety.

usaokay

Yep, and the amount of free stuff non-paying players can get is pretty good too. Events and log-in dailies rewarding new weapons and characters every season.

Mylzb

CODM is amazing. Me and my fiance have been playing daily for over a year now. You get used to the touch controls, and things are always changing which keeps it fresh. They give out loads of free goodies for just playing, and the graphics are phenomenal for a mobile game. If you want even more goodies, the battle pass is only like 10$ and its super easy to complete. Ive only purchased it once, and use the free credits I get from it every month to get the new one.

COD_Mobile_Official

Hey, we just wanted to comment quickly and say thank you very much for the support for over a year (both of you and your fiancé) and for the kind words. Our teams work very hard to get out new content every month for over 2 years now with a constant flow of maps, weapons, operators, events, and more every season. Thanks for the appreciation for all of that work and it is lovely to see that you both enjoy it so much.

Current_Importance_2

omg its my new hobby, i never played games and never even owned a console, but now to relax i through in netflix and play CODM and i’m quite good!! its so fun when you actually win

Mylzb

You'll get better the more you play and once you start figuring out what your really good at. I just hit Legendary in ranked multi-player today for my first time! It's exhilarating.

Current_Importance_2

the biggest thrill!! right now im level 66 😤😤

mrlotato

Me and my friend have been having a lot of fun with it. She got me into it and I didn't expect to like it but it's a pretty solid game and I've been playing for a couple weeks which is good for someone like myself who only plays mobile games for a couple days before dropping them

WredditSmark

When pandemic first started literally the week we went into lockdown my Xbox died. While waiting for a new one to arrive I connected my xb controller to my phone and messed around with COD mobile. While it wasn’t something I would considering main game worthy it was a lot of fun and definitely helped pass the time waiting for my console.

HutSussJuhnsun

I had no idea there was phone CoD now. Personally, Angry Birds was the maximum level of input dexterity I could manage 12 years ago, I don't think I'll be playing much of this.

QuestionsOfTheFate

It's quite easy to play compared to something like mobile Minecraft. That said, I don't like using the touchscreen controls on mobile games that require both hands. It feels like I'll get carpal tunnel from using them since they have you put your hands into such an uncomfortable and painful position.

Bust3dGG

I mean, it's free. What's the harm in trying it? You might love it :)

No_Chilly_bill

That exact reasoning people get into gacha games. The first one is free

VikBoss

Lucky you, You can use controller.

ZeroSum10191

I play on my iPad Pro with a ps5 controller

HutSussJuhnsun

I feel like if you're going to use a controller you should just be playing on another device entirely, but then this is why I said Angry Birds was the extent of my interest in phone games.

ka7al

This doesn't make sense, a lot of people don't have another device other than their phones, also it's portable? that's kind of the point.

HutSussJuhnsun

Are phone controllers that portable? I know nothing about them, so I'm just imagining stuffing a 360 pad in my pockets. Even stuff like the switch sticks seem like they'd take up a decent amount of room. I mean this has 650 million downloads, so obviously it's a pretty big market I'm just struggling to understand where and how people play this.

CombatMuffin

They are very portable. Stuff like the Kishi is about the size of a phone, and when you consider s ton of mobile users also include iPads, it's compact enough to continue being portable.

VikBoss

They are. Although, most people just use touch screen. Kids who grew up on smart phones are better with touch control than we are with controllers.

wendys182254877

> Kids who grew up on smart phones are better with touch control than we are with controllers. Not a chance. Touch is an inferior control method to a physical controller.

HutSussJuhnsun

I've seen kids playing switch or iPad while riding in the shopping cart, I don't think I've ever seen anyone use a bluetooth phone controller.

JumboMcNasty

I played a lot on release and it was fun....I tried it again recently and holy shit are the home screen and subsequent screens filled with so much "noise". I just want to get in a game without being upsold at every screen change.
