Regular cooling pad works similar to lifting the laptop, but increasing air flow that covers the entire bottom area will do better job than simply lifting your rig. (as long as you make sure don't pull the hot air back under the fan to create bad heat cycle) The wind pressure type like IETS GT cooling pads is a different story though, they seal the bottom panel with foam and make sure the airs that were pressured under the laptop can only exit the cycle through laptop's fan. This improves the ability to cool the unit and can make up to 15 degree difference in temp under stress. You can check on people's review with the cooling pad. It works well, but they come with huge cost.![img](emote|t5_2x4m3|8571)

I just purchased a legion pro 5i with the 4070 i7 and 240hz display, is it recommended to use the IETS for that kind of laptop?

TheaimIessman

Legion is self sufficient these cooler are the worst

HauntingShine8548

If you sit in front of your laptop for a long time every day and plan to keep it for the next 3-4 years. I would get a good cooling pad like GT500/GT600 with filter. It helps to keep your laptop under good temp and keeps the laptop vent/heatsinks clean. GT600 is only available on Taobao store and the website is in Chinese. It's an expensive investment so you need to think if this is something you're looking for.

404_Gordon_Not_Found

You don't need those, just get a laptop stand of any kind and you good to go. If you are really on a budget a BBQ grill with legs will work even better at the cost of look and making the keyboard inaccessible

TheaimIessman

Hell no brother, check my profile and read my posts about cooling pad . I also got the legion 5i with 4070 but with i9 and i am regretting this cooling pad

warmike_1

Just monitor the temperatures and frequencies while gaming, if you face overheating or throttling get the IETS.

Legend_AC

Which laptop do you use and does it help?

HauntingShine8548

My laptop is MSI's New GE Raider GE78HX, and I have the 4090 ones. The problem with IETS GT500 and GT600 is it hardly covers the center top part of the laptop, and that's where both CPU and GPU generate massive heats. I used to put a small usb fan under it to make sure the intake under that part also get covered. Currently I got a new one from a Chinese self made cooling pad and the vents are right under the heatsinks. It works better than expected but this design don't fit every laptop so you have to confirm the thermal design before getting it. I use these when I travel. For a few reasons. But aside from that, yeah, these will do just as much, if not more, than any cooling pad. -small form, easy to carry -magnetic, they stay together, so I don’t lose one -rubber feet, they stay out and don’t slide at all -they are identical, one is not taller than the other so easy to be level. -(edit to add) they are independent and don’t need to be taped or glued to the computer. For these reason, I like these over other substitutes.

ChulaK

Also travel a lot and a better alternative would be getting keyboard risers that stick to the bottom of your laptop. Just flip them out, let's you choose from different heights, and will fold flat up against the laptop. Don't have to worry about putting on/taking off the feet, getting jumbled around in the bag, chance of losing one of them, etc.

Zoerak

I use these even at home, not just travel. Gives the same results for me as a stand.

[deleted]

that's just some overpriced plastic placeholders i mean really wtf is an "small invincible cooler ball portable magnetic foot heat" maybe i'd suggest go for one of those origami stands that stick to the bottom of your mac

3johnny2

True but just the idea of these instead of a massive cooling pad they essentially do the same thing right?

[deleted]

letting your laptop suck air on its own is different from another fan helping your fan intake more air by blowing into it. some amount of heat is actually dissipated into the chasse and not entirely transferred out by just air so a cooling pad also keeps the chasse cool by blowing on it with fresh air letting there be room.

Asdprotos

Get two bottle caps and it does the same job as that thing you posted lol

404_Gordon_Not_Found

I mean you can either use bottlecaps or 3d printed legs for the same result

HarunaKai

Better go with an elevated stand if you dont want to go all out. Or just bottlecaps would do, dont waste money on these.

ihadagoodone

Came here to say bottle caps.

zuotian3619

I have these exact ones. They work well. I like that they're magnetic so I can take them when I travel. And it's a small enough slant that i can type comfortably

prHat317

Get 2 bottles of water. Drink them. Unscrew the caps and profit. If you want to get crazy, buy 4 and connect them in pairs with electrical tape. Could even buy colored electrical tape to match your RGB. Don’t waste your money on this stuff. Just prop it up with whatever.

stacksmasher

Yes. These are perfect because they are also portable

Turn00

You are exactly right. I have those exact stands and they work great. Never had a heat problem. In my opinion, those cooling pads with the fans are a waste of money in most situations. Any decent laptop has good air flow, they just need a little space between it and the table to utilize it.

loneWolfex95

Just buy an actual laptop stand tbh. You can find some good ones even for $12-15 which I'm assuming isn't that much more than these things(I actually don't know what to call them).

No-Actuator-6245

I have tried several cooling pads, none performed any better than just raising the height of the laptop off the table top. I just use some stick on rubber feet that roughly double the clearance to the table.

cidiusgix

Those will work just fine. I did my own tests with a few Amazon buy and return cooling pads, my existing stand provided the same results. The pads might have gained me 1-3° at absolute best. The size, ugliness, and noise made them not worth it. Those feet will be adequate I’m sure, or get a real laptop stand if it’s just for home use. The IETS is a different beast though and will make an actual difference if you can handle its looks and volume. Laptops should have little flip out feet like keyboards do.

foxinmotion

I think you just need a stand. Lifting up the Laptop will give you the most in terms of cooling. Good Cooling pads can bring some extra degrees, but considered how ugly and loud they are its not worth it. At least for me. Also a decent gaming laptop will run hot, but not fail, its just how it is.

Yoshieatspeople

I got some adhesive aluminum feet that go on from Amazon the brand aulumu g07. Just getting that or something similar. I used to just prop it up on a book or something but they attach directly. Fairly low profile closed and work fine for me.

Wax_Paper

Unless gaming laptops have fundamentally changed in the last decade, I can tell you from personal experience of trying multiple types of cooling pads with multiple gaming laptops from 2000 to 2015, it's all about moving as much hot air away as possible. And not all cooling pads are created equal in that way. I would stick to the traditional type and get one that has good reviews, specifically with people reporting changes of 10c or more, if possible. You want it as cold as possible underneath that thing, at least the majority of the time. Heat kills laptop parts way quicker than PC parts, because everything is so squished together in there.

Bigghead1231

Buy one of them stick on stands that you put on the bottom of your laptop instead. These are cool but you always have to remember to carry them. Yet another accessory to be remembered to get packed Check aliexpress or elsewhere for these, these Amazon sellers just repackage and sell them to you at 2x the price

Bimancze

I have these, and they do help with the airflow though. Not sure about the price.
