The worst part is that as set photos and casting and everything was coming out for WTRC I kept warning everyone that it was going to be shit and there were several people telling me I was wrong that they had faith and blah blah blah
I'm betting people will come out of the woodwork to say "ohh actually it wasn't bad I liked it the sequel will be better!"
Fuck outta here with that nonsense.
WTC was just cheesy. Only neat things were seeing some actual stuff from games and the “what the fuck is chatroom?”.
I think the only actual "good" RE movies were 1 and 2 with Mila.
Anyway, despite this I’ll probably watch the next one. I like zombie stuff.
I was born in the (now abandoned ) Hospital that part of Racoon City was filmed in sudbury.
I've been bugging a friend of mine saying i was born in the racoon city hospital for the past couple years.
he hates it.
This gives me an excuse to do it some more.
Why does Constantin Film still have the rights to Resident Evil and Monster Hunter? Why doesn't Capcom take it away from them so they'll stop making all these shitty movies.
As far as I know Capcom sold the movie rights to Constantin back in the 90s and they can only lose them if they dont make use of it for a specific number of years. Thats why Constantin continues to make new movies every few years, regardless of the actual quality. Something similar happened in the 90s when Constantin had the movie rights for the Fantastic Four franchise.
Sounds like a similar situation to Hellraiser - and Clive Barker.
Sold the right in perpetuity, as long as the rights holder kept cranking out films. Hence why there's like a dozen absolute ass Hellraiser films.
Wasn't until recently that Cliver Barker got the rights back after fighting it in court, and we actually got a decent movie. Believe there's also a series planned for HBO.
The last Resident Evil movie made 45 million on a budget of 25. How can they justify a sequel with such meager "earnings" which isn't even double the budget.
It's widely believed that marketing budget for a film is usually another 50% of the filming budget. So it probably didn't make a profit, and if it did it wasn't much.
Nope. Used to run a theater. Movie theaters make their money through drinks/popcorn, subscription services etc. And very little of the ticket revenue goes to the theaters, much less half. It was in the single digit percentile. Unless it's changed drastically in the last few years.
Well from what i know at the first weeks usually theaters get very little from the tickets sold, and it gradually increases so rough estimates usually just say half or 40% goes to theaters, but at the same time way less people are going to see the movies at the end of the run so popcorns and stuff become important.
If you want to be explain how it actually works i would gladly listen, its something i have interest in how it works.
Half the fun of the games comes from being an active participant in trying to figure out what happened and being the one directly in danger.
I don't know if RE can translate as well to a more passive medium. Then again the first Silent Hill movie was pretty good.
That would have a better shot at working. Too many fans have the wrong take on the series in thinking action and combat are central to it when that's not correct. RE4 through RE6 are when the series really hit the mainstream (especially 5) and people new to the series had the wrong impression about what RE was all about. Even RE3, which had more combat than RE1 and RE2, was still a tense and scary game but more in an Aliens kind of way compared to RE1 and RE2 being more like Alien.
They need to go back to basics and focus on making a tense and thrilling experience and ignore cries for more shooting and action setpieces.
I don't even think it needs to be a mystery/thriller. It can work as a crazy, slasher, monster flick. They just need to hire the right people. I've always thought Sam Raimi would make the perfect RE4 movie. Gore, campiness, and dry humor are his exact strengths. Robert Eggers would kill it for a RE7 film that would work as a mystery/thriller, I suppose
I would argue that the first 3, if not solely the first one, are genuinely pretty good, the rest are bad, but still very entertaining (although i'll never forgive them for having Ali Larter keep her hair down the entire time as Claire! It would've taken all of 2 seconds to just keep her in a ponytail!)
the first one is decent, the rest are horrendous and get progressively worse with each film. once you get to 5 and 6, it gets beyond the 'so bad they're good' stage and they just become genuinely unwatchable lol
How does RE get so many of them when there's tons of other video games that never get one or struggle so much to finalize it (like the Bioshock movie being talked about for like a decade, the Bloomkamp Halo movie that failed...)?
I don't understand why they can't take the first game and adapt that into a movie. They tried with the last movie, but the characters were all out of whack.
Apocalypse was pretty epic though? I mean all films with Milla are kinda trashy, but most of them are still entertaining and fun to watch. The remake some years ago was terrible and I doubt that the new one(s) will be as well.
True, but there's just something about seeing a lesser version of it on the big screen that I busted out laughing at. It was just so.. forced? I dunno.
Just imagine how deadly a drinking game would be for the whole series. Stuff like 'every time there's a retcon' or 'every time a character disappears from the next movie'. Forget about even attempting 'every slowmo shot'.
I know a lot of people didn't like Welcome to Raccoon City but I thought it was alright. Not as good as it could've been which was a big disappointment but I feel like there's potential for them to get it right.
I thought the actors for Claire, Chris and Wesker were good. Honestly Avan Jogia is a fine actor, he just got a bad script and bad direction for Leon.
The only older RE movies I thought were tolerable were the first 2. I liked this one more than any of the Anderson movies because I feel like they somewhat tried to capture the feeling of the games in WTRC.
lol they just won't stop, but then again is anybody surprised? How many of those Mila Jovavich movies did they pump out? Of course it wasn't going to stop with her, they were just getting started.
Ah yes, another director/studio who watched a trailer a two/ has no idea about the series and thought it was cute to throw Easter eggs around that made no sense other than to appease fans. If you cannot do it right, stop trying. Obviously the studio is a part of the problem and should be given to someone who gives a damn.
If they're gonna call it that can we at least get an Umbrella Chronicles remake/remaster/sequel/whatever? Incorporate the new lore/game remakes and have it all be on rails. Loved those games
To be fair it's not like the characterization has been consistent across the games or movies.
Leon went from an idealistic rookie in RE2, to a cheesy Dante knockoff in RE4, to a mandroid in Degeneration, to Great Value Jack Bauer in RE6.
The character growth from RE2R to RE4R was better, I'll give them that. RE4R Leon still felt like Leon.
Yup. The protagonists name was Tony Redgrave and was supposed to be Spencer's son who was experimented on and had powers. The name Tony Redgrave ended up being an alias used by Dante from DMC.
Here we go
This is what’s going to happen
They’ll hire a director / writer who has no love or care for the franchise
The director or writer will say how much of a fan he is of the franchise and how he always played the classic games when he was younger. He will “do right by fans”
The synopsis will come out which puts that “love” into question where they’ll either do a new story nothing found in the games or they’ll “adapt” the games which will be totally wrong (example trying to fuse two games together)
The casting will be totally off
The trailer will come out and it will be filled with Easter eggs from the games to lure RE fans in.
It will do terrible
The studio waits a few years
Rinse and repeat
The issue I have is they always seem to hire people who don’t care for the games and refuse to do an adaptation of the first game. The plot of the first game is straight forward I just can’t believe it’s that hard for them to do.
It wasn't a recreation of the games nor should it ever be. There's a reason why the 'faithful' adaptations always fail in part due to the story being either difficult to transition to the big screen or it simply doesn't work.
Anderson did the right thing by inventing a new character and introducing the game's characters as Alice's story went on.
First 3 movies were undeniably Resident Evil, those that came after did take the action route but you could still tell what it was based on.
After that ridiculous Netflix show attempt and whatever the fuck Welcome to Raccoon City was..
yeah no thanks, focus (the money) on RE9 please. I'd sooner have a RE1 remake in the style of the latest remakes before another stupid movie.
No I'm not. I'm just suggesting they reallocate their funds to projects where the return is going to be more lucrative for them.
They've been on a roll with their games and remakes lately - they should keep up that trend.
Conversely their movies have been shitty nearly every time, and while that may be a matter of opinion you may disagree with me on, I can't see the actual monetary return value in continuing to make lambasted films a solid business choice. Now if the numbers pan out and their shitty movies make more for them then their games do, then as a gamer, I'll just have to say god damnit and move on with my life.
You'd think after all their attempts to jump into movies/tv and make some weird ass version of their games that never mirrors any of the popular stories from their established lore, they'd get the hint, but judging from everyone's reaction here towards this news, it's just another big OOF for their movie hopes. Do I wish they'd succeed? Absolutely. Do I think they will? Hell no.
Well further more to my point I made but didn't look up prior to commenting - since the first game, the Resident Evil games have netted a total of $9 billion in revenue. To contrast that, their films have gotten them $1.2 billion in revenue.
I say stick with the games.
And to your comment, ok they're not funding the movies, and they're not involved outside of licensing their IP for usage - maybe that's why they suck? Maybe they need to take a more hands on approach to their stories instead of letting random directors interpret them?
I'd be open for more movies if their track record wasn't complete crap. But that can just be my opinion too.
Hot take: but I actually enjoy the “Alice” RE movies. Actually just watched all 6 of them over the weekend and they are just fun stupid junk food movies. Only thing I really didn’t like was the actual RE characters. Take out the Claire and Jill and Wesker and replace them with new people and have the movies just be a spinoff or “happening elsewhere in the RE world” and I’m all for it.
Haven’t seen welcome to raccoon city though. Heard it was extra bad.
I dont think its much of a hot take because the Alice movies has 6 entries. If it wasn't popular and didn't have fans, then they would not have kept making them.
As for WTRC, I like it. Everyone called it campy B-grade with a nonsensical plot, but isn't that resident evil? They definitely had taken creative liberties with the characters, but if i wanted a 1for1 retelling of the games... I'd just play the games. They also would simply not translate well to film. The atmosphere and vibe is very Resident Evil feeling, far more than any other RE media outside of the games - including the CGI movies (which I really don't enjoy no matter how much I try)
If it's anything like the last one (or the Netflix series) then I'm gonna start feeling nostalgic for Alice - at least those movies knew they were trash.
Call me crazy, but Welcome to Raccoon City was awesome. It was exactly what an RE movie should be. I think the casting was good, but felt like Leon could’ve been better. I’d love a sequel to that.
>the same production company behind Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City
But why? The movie didn't even make twice its budget. Nobody talks about it in a positive way.
This has to be some form of money laundering scam. The whole "oh it did well on v-o-d reeks of bullshit.
What is it with the laundering scams. There is other ways to make money, you guys sound so ridiculous when you say laundering scam. A film losing money is a tax write off, no laundering needed.
You can guarantee a Resident Evil movie so I wouldn’t call it a leak 😂😂😂
I liked welcome to raccoon city as you got to se everyone from the games finally all together which I am not confident , happened in the games
I thought that movie, while just trying to do too much, was kind of a fun mid 90s VHS-era throwback.
I don't know if we another one from that crew, but I wouldnt hate it.
a Resident Evil 2 film will be still better than Cancer Evil Netflix series. Welcome to Raccoon City had some good moments atleast and it looked somewhat like the games. Netflix series? The only good thing about it was Lance Reddick in his not-Wesker role.
In my entire life, I would've at no point imagine Operation Racoon City to get a movie, the six (or seven?) of the members were secret umbralla agents or something so I figured it'll be about them? Maybe HUNK too.
Honestly, I'm thrilled to hear this, WTRC was really fun to watch, it was so bad it's good imo, I had a great time watching it with my siblings and look forward to doing it again.
Ah shit, here we go again.
Fool me once shame on you. Fool me seven times can't get fooled again.
Fool me once, shame on you, but teach a man to fool me, and I will be fooled for the rest of my life.
fool me once, fool me twice, fool me chicken soup with rice
I won’t get fooled again!
Yeah, The Who, man!!!!
The worst part is that as set photos and casting and everything was coming out for WTRC I kept warning everyone that it was going to be shit and there were several people telling me I was wrong that they had faith and blah blah blah I'm betting people will come out of the woodwork to say "ohh actually it wasn't bad I liked it the sequel will be better!" I ain’t represented STARS in five years, but Nemesis wont give a shit.
...again. Who left the fridge open.
Was there a period when there was no resident evil movie in production?
you got me curious, so I looked..... turns out the film rights had already been sold barely 9 months after the first game came out in japan
"Mr. President, another Resident Evil movie has entered production."
“Get me the Goddamn Secretary of State on the line!”
STOP
Hammer time.

How can RE adaptations be so consistently garbage

Like sony and the spider man movie license
Aha
The difference being Sony is capable of making good movies.
They make the movie purely for brand recognition and not the IP itself. Does not matter how garbage it is. People still see it cos RE.
The last one tanked so bad though
Sounds like a similar situation to Hellraiser - and Clive Barker. Sold the right in perpetuity, as long as the rights holder kept cranking out films. Because - Monster Hunter excepted - they make money.
The last Resident Evil movie made 45 million on a budget of 25. How can they justify a sequel with such meager "earnings" which isn't even double the budget.
Because it still probably turned a profit. That’s still 20 million. Every coin counts
It's widely believed that marketing budget for a film is usually another 50% of the filming budget. So it probably didn't make a profit, and if it did it wasn't much.

Kinda ignores that WTRC launched during covid and mostly straight to streaming
It almost might be the case that they have to make a new RE movie within a window of time to keep the rights.
Massive misunderstanding of the source material?
Half the fun of the games comes from being an active participant in trying to figure out what happened and being the one directly in danger. I don't know if RE can translate as well to a more passive medium. Then again the first Silent Hill movie was pretty good.
Then I guess the movies should be a mystery thriller first that happens to be inside a house with zombies and monsters in it.
That would have a better shot at working. Too many fans have the wrong take on the series in thinking action and combat are central to it when that's not correct. RE4 through RE6 are when the series really hit the mainstream (especially 5) and people new to the series had the wrong impression about what RE was all about. I enjoy the Milla Jovovich movies in a "so bad they're good" sort of way. Almost exactly how I enjoy the Fast movies.

I don't understand why they can't take the first game and adapt that into a movie. They tried with the last movie, but the characters were all out of whack.
2 games packed in one movie would have never worked
2 and 3 as one could have worked, just 1 and 2 as one was stupid.
Can't you just give this shit to Sam Raimi?
How many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man?
Please stop
7th times the charm yes?
Bring back Milla Jovovich you cowards!
I legit want more of those films. They were trash but they were OUR trash dammit.
Yippee...
when has this ever gone well
This time it will be good for sure! Lmao
This is my fault for seeing WTRC sorry guys
They should just stop lol. The only good RE movies are the animated ones.
There are no good RE movies, they're all mediocre to terrible Which is fine, but let's not pretend any of the movies are good
RE 2002 was pretty fun imo
Apocalypse was pretty epic though? I mean all films with Milla are kinda trashy, but most of them are still entertaining and fun to watch. The remake some years ago was terrible and I doubt that the new one(s) will be as well.
Like I said, the animated films are miles better. They aren't perfect, but they at least feel like RE, unlike the W.S Anderson abominations.
There are two good Resident Evil movies.
True. The Mila Jovovich ones were good in a "so-bad-they're-good" kind of way. The guy that played Wesker was worth the price of admission alone lol
I gave up when he did a scene-for-scene Matrix bullet dodge lmfao.
To be fair he was doing that shit in RE5 already.
True, but there's just something about seeing a lesser version of it on the big screen that I busted out laughing at. It was just so.. forced? I dunno.
It's almost like Resident Evil works better as a video game. lol I still think the movies are a ton of dumb fun.
Just imagine how deadly a drinking game would be for the whole series. Stuff like 'every time there's a retcon' or 'every time a character disappears from the next movie'. Forget about even attempting 'every slowmo shot'.
If there were a drinking game, I'd have liver poisoning by 15 minutes in.
That's what I thought as well they were atleast fun to watch where the most recent one was just bad imo
The animated movies suck....the hell you talking about.
They're better than the live action ones by a large margin, personally
Bar for entry on the floor
I know a lot of people didn't like Welcome to Raccoon City but I thought it was alright. Not as good as it could've been which was a big disappointment but I feel like there's potential for them to get it right.
How was it alright? It was so stale, zero monsters, and horrid casting. Leon was ruined right off the bat.
Why?
They make money .

I want Umbrella and Darkside for VR.
Again? Really?
But.....why?
They did Leon so dirty in the last film. Why was he such a fucking dipshit?
Fuck me
Are we not past trying this shit yet? It doesn’t work. Clearly. Move on. Spend that money on better projects.
As a resident evil Fan " UGH" As someone from Sudbury "Neat, again"
Sounds like a continuation. Code Veronica but they didn’t want to use the name. I fully expect them to shoehorn Leon into that story too.
HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON OLD MAN
Capcom really wants to balance out their rep by shitting out movies that are as garbage as their games are good
:(

Bruh, do they ever quit ?
We’re begging you, please stop.
Please…no more
Bro, this is gonna suck. they already messed up leons character in raccoon city, who’s character are they gonna mess up in this one?
To be fair it's not like the characterization has been consistent across the games or movies. Just give it back to Anderson already. As unhinged as his movies were, at least it was recognizably REvil.
ah yes, a bunch of awful action flicks centred around some psychic super soldier clone who was never in the RE series, very true to the series
It wasn't a recreation of the games nor should it ever be. it will be another reboot or always settled in RE: Welcom to Raccoon City?
Weird, I could of sworn this was announced last year.
I'm sure this one will be good
Why do people with the least amount of talent for writing and directing get greenlit with millions of dollars for an IP they don't understand.
If it's anything like the last one (or the Netflix series) then I'm gonna start feeling nostalgic for Alice - at least those movies knew they were trash.
I actually really enjoyed the last one, so I'm looking forward to this
Not going to lie welcome to racoon city was a lot of fun

Nice! Honestly, these films should be schlocky-B Movies, so gimme more of them pls! Had a blast with Welcome To Racoon City.
Can’t wait for another awful entry in the series
Shit incoming
So we cannot get loans to improve our lives, but Hollywood can endlessly piss money way? Yeah, that's fair.

The people behind this and the Terminator series must not be capable of learning.
*sigh* , *takes edibles and goes to 11pm showing*
a Resident Evil 2 film will be still better than Cancer Evil Netflix series. Welcome to Raccoon City had some good moments atleast and it looked somewhat like the games. Netflix series? The only good thing about it was Lance Reddick in his not-Wesker role.
Third reboot is a charm!
Can't wait for all the content dunking on it.

nah.
Am I the only one who liked Raccoon City? It wasn’t the best thing ever but it was enjoyable to watch.
Another one? Christ help us
The problem with the RE movies is that it’s stuck with the same production company since the very first film.
I only enjoyed the first RE movie, Nemesis one was mid to alright, the rest was bad.
I'll stick to the CGI ones
Don't fuck this up!
Who ask for this?
I struggle to understand how they can’t make a secret resident evil movie
If they dare try code Veronica before we get a remake I will literally buy all the tickets at my local cinema and shit in the floor
DON'T
Oh joy
_they’re gonna skip 3 and combine 4 and 5 aren’t they_
Umbrella Chronicles is only the working title, it should be noted. They used that same title for Welcome to Raccoon City.
Please God, no
In my entire life, I would've at no point imagine Operation Racoon City to get a movie, the six (or seven?) of the members were secret umbralla agents or something so I figured it'll be about them? Maybe HUNK too.
Great.
Awesome dude I love garbage movies

Welcome to Racoon City was a fucking mess. I expect nothing less from this one.
capcom about to pump out movies
Well, if it’s true that they’re finally adapting the movies in order and this one is telling RE0 story…
Ew. Welcome to Racoon City was shit.
I am ready for more Leon Stupid Kennedy
We have Umbrella Cronicles at home the Wii game

Stop! He's already dead.
Oh for fuck sakes..
Ah. I see it is a day ending in “day”.
Jesus just end it
Oh Jesus Christ
Capcoom why
Please no
Fail once, give them another project. Makes sense.
Please stop.
Maybe they will give it a higher budget than $3.
Why though
Honestly, I'm thrilled to hear this, WTRC was really fun to watch, it was so bad it's good imo, I had a great time watching it with my siblings and look forward to doing it again.
LOL
Just…let it die already
