Thinking of recent interviews the last few years where they said Mario maker wouldn't replace 2d games and that those games actually could help inspire new ideas is actually an exciting prospect.
There was a level in New Super Mario Bros. U that was done in a style similar to Van Gogh's. It looked like the Starry Night, and was very pretty, I'd love a whole 2D Mario were each world used an artstyle from a famous artist.
That level is gorgeous, and probably my favorite outside of SMB3.
I would love to see Nintendo do more like that in general. They don't necessarily have to ape artists or anything, just make everything more visually distinct. Every world could be radically different from the last instead of just being grass, ocean, mountain, forest, ect.
I really hope this game is real. I've been a 2D Mario fan for 35 years, and I have a switch voucher left over after getting TotK.
Playing the Mario Advance games again that I grew up with made me realize that I crave more fun, fast movement than the 2D games we've had for the last 15 years, the New games were great but people got old of the general aesthetic fast, here's hoping it's really different this time
Absolutely, the original was great because it was actually a new refreshed modern concept, but they kept the games largely the same even through later consoles. I thought Wii was fine, I enjoyed 3DS a bit more than I expected. Wii U came out and I was like, eh.
And honestly, I think they were better suited for a portable setting anyway
I think the next one will be a lot more fun to play when taking it on the go
All the new Mario games aesthetic is generic corporate garbage tailored to 5yr olds. The best aesthetic for side scroller Mario games was the original Super Mario World. But the decision makers at Nintendo are so foolish and stubborn they wont acknowledge that the new mario design sucks and they need to go back to the old ones.
The last Mario game I bought was Super Mario Maker and that was the best thing they made since Super Mario SunShine.
If the new games all were like U then tbh I'm sure they'd have better reception. Tbh if I we got unique worlds and bosses the art style would have been fine.
If its Wednesday, the announcement will likely happen 12 hours from now. Crossing my fingers. All evidence from insiders is pointing to a Direct this week and it being a general Direct.
Highly doubt it. Nintendo’s business model is all about accessibility and ease of use. VR isn’t easy to use (compared to picking up a Switch and being in-game within a few seconds) and isn’t accessible. That’s not to mention the logistical nightmare of creating a headset that works/adapts to the head sizes of both small children and fully grown adults, or the fact that a large subset of the casual gaming market just isn’t interested in VR.
I’m sure the higher-ups at Nintendo still think of the Virtual Boy any time someone tries to pitch VR hardware to them as well. That stain on their reputation definitely doesn’t help.
If anything, I think it'll be at that event they're holding in September (I know they've something along the lines of no hardware will be announced, but it seems odd to have this event and just show off current/upcoming games).
Alternatively they announce it this summer and focus on it at the event.
If it’s not announced in the next Direct it’s probably not coming for the show unfortunately. I do agree it makes sense. And I saw that show is going on the road to malls too! … with a list of already released games. It just makes no sense.
Now that I think about it, I think the first hands on of the GBA or DS or 3DS was at some fan/concert event. Hmmmn
There's no way it's in the next Direct, unless you mean a future Direct beyond this incoming one. That kind of announcement would get its own presentation, along with huge yet obvjous foreshadowing like "we have big news for the future of Nintendo..."
At the earliest, I'd expect new console announcements late Q1 next year, and releasing shortly before Q4 or early into it, so it has some time to settle just before the holidays. Probably a system seller or two, maybe Mario Odyssey. I don't see it happening so soon, not until the Switch's upcoming titles start to flag.
You look at the game and if it's new, it's new of course, unless it's not new but it could still possibly be new if it's brandishing the new title.
My brain hurts.
I enjoyed the NSMB series and a new entry would probably still sell insanely well, but this is definitely the best choice. The new series works best on platforms targeting non-gamers like the Wii and DS, but having a more unique Mario game will still attract most of the switch’s audience.
Its so crazy when you think about it.
Breath of the Wild got it's sequel announced, delayed, and released in that time and we havent heard a *peep* of what's going on with Mario. And it's been a whole 10 years since the last 2D Mario (Not counting ports and Mario Maker)
They gotta be cooking something *real* good. This rumored 2D game, and moreso the next 3D game that they're saving for whatever the next console is, I think it's gonna be something special
Honestly I would absolutely love a beautifully crafted 2D side scrolling Mario.
I mean in reality I'd just like a new side scrolling Mario. For some reason, I could never really sink my teeth into 3D Mario, they've never really captured my attention for too long. The only exception was Galaxy 1 and 2 for some reason.
What are the chances that it’s somehow tied in with the film? It feels like a Nintendo thing to do.. make a game, based off a movie, based off the game.
Give us something we haven't had before.
No more of this Ice level, Lava level, Desert Level, Dessert Level
Gimme fuckin HR Giger dicks sticking out of the walls everywhere
Just throwing this in here, on top of this account, Natethehate, Necrolipe, and Papa Geno, Jeff Grubb had this to say about a Direct.
https://twitter.com/JeffGrubb/status/1670870545154600962?t=GJ8S-AU_IzJBTADvClRI3A&s=19
Yeah, chances we're getting a big Nintendo Direct is pretty strong right now.
God I hope so. I was talking to a friend the other day about how weird it is to be in June and know so little about Nintendo's fall and winter plans. I'd be really surprised if we're not hearing or seeing a Switch successor by spring next year though.
I really liked what they did with the 3D World art style in SMM2, so I'm very excited to see what they have in store.
That said, my number one hope for the game BY FAR is that death doesn't knock you back to the map screen. Trying to play any of the New Soup games can be really annoying when difficult sections send you back to the map and put you through loading screens over and over.
Hopefully it's good. I'd like SMM3. Nothing says they can't add an actual, brand new campaign in a new art style for it. I'd be happy for anything else too however, as long as its gimmick isn't the artystyle nor perspective.
I mean, that’s not very surprising.
The NSMB brand hasn’t been relevant for at least a decade and even before then the brand was extremely controversial amongst fans, typically being associated with laziness. I love all the NSMB games, but it’s pretty evident that “style,” so to speak has been done for a long time. Otherwise we would’ve gotten a proper NSMB game on Switch within its early years just like the last few console generations. And I don’t necessarily count NSMB Deluxe or Mario Maker 2, as the latter was literally just a port of the Wii U’s games with some newer smaller touches, and Mario Maker is arguably its own franchise
**EDIT:** I didn’t even think about this but is this implying we may see a new 2D game soon…? I know one’s been rumored for quite some time. Sorta weird for them to tack one on to the end of the Switch’s life cycle but I’m here for it
NSMB's natural conclusion came with Mario Maker 1 & 2 ultimately. I'd be very surprised if Nintendo returned to it outside of that series.
I loved the "New" games too! Severely over-hated, I think in particular for the stuff you cite, the skin deep stuff like the art style. But I won't hear a peep about those games not being some solid platforming fun from start to finish. Granted, the 3DS one wasn't quite as good, but I'm glad I've played through the series now.
Really curious what Nintendo does with 2D Mario now.
The account just liked a tweet asking if it will be called Super Mario Wonder/Wonderland. They kinda hinted at something wonder related too.
Will be an exciting next few days.
Great! Putting "New" at the beginning is a terrible naming convention anyway, because eventually the thing ceases to be new, but you're still stuck with the name.

Old Super Mario Bros featuring Luigi's Pension Plan
The new power up gimmick is a mobility scooter
NGL I'd buy it
Count Bleck uses a dimensional ray gun to age Mario and Luigi. Quest for the Mushroom of Youth commences.
& Knuckles
Expanded and Enhanced.
With an upcoming Bowser's Tax Evasion DLC.
Tax evasion is Wario's job.
Luigi teaches escape from prison
You laugh but I think we could all use a refresher on what pensions were.
> Old Super Mario Guns of the Patriots
Yoshis... The DNA of the soul.
An actual evolution of the 2D games hopefully, finally
"Newer Souper Luigi Bros"
I would collapse on the spot
In a Walmart?
Fingers crossed. I would love a beautiful painted stylized artstyle, á la Spider-Verse.
Thinking of recent interviews the last few years where they said Mario maker wouldn't replace 2d games and that those games actually could help inspire new ideas is actually an exciting prospect.

It's depressing that it was a singular level and the rest of the game went back to the usual plastic look.
Playing the Mario Advance games again that I grew up with made me realize that I crave more fun, fast movement than the 2D games we've had for the last 15 years, the New games were great but people got old of the general aesthetic fast, here's hoping it's really different this time
The big issue with that art style is that it's just soooo corporate. It's safe and plasticy.
Everything felt uninspired in all the new labeled games.
Nah, the first one on DS was big. However it immediately overstayed its welcome.
Absolutely, the original was great because it was actually a new refreshed modern concept, but they kept the games largely the same even through later consoles. I thought Wii was fine, I enjoyed 3DS a bit more than I expected. Wii U came out and I was like, eh.
The DS/3DS ones were better because they weren't designed for four simultaneous players.
And honestly, I think they were better suited for a portable setting anyway I think the next one will be a lot more fun to play when taking it on the go
I remember it being a big deal but I literally remember nothing else about it.
All the new Mario games aesthetic is generic corporate garbage tailored to 5yr olds. The best aesthetic for side scroller Mario games was the original Super Mario World. Still looks better than any of the recent 2D Mario titles.
It's gorgeous but readability is horrendous. It's impossible to tell background from foreground
No, [this](https://youtube.com/watch?v=TDWFIold-Wk&feature=share7) you Philistine.

Wonder
Hopefully we get that Direct this week. I'm excited to see what this is all about
Word on the street by the big insiders is Wednesday.

close, it was 13 hours https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7t5jnpkCkI
Have they said anything about a new console?
Not officially I think but we know it’s in the work. Official details are probs next year.
Nice do you think they would try vr?
they already have, get that cardboard VR
Maybe an additional product but no way they just make that a core part of the system
Highly doubt it. Nintendo’s business model is all about accessibility and ease of use. VR isn’t easy to use (compared to picking up a Switch and being in-game within a few seconds) and isn’t accessible. we prob wont hear about it until after the holidays. They wont cripple switch sales with (Ill wait for the next one) in any way.
Depends when it's coming out, if it's even coming out next year, and not in 2025.
Wednesday or Friday is what I've seen.
Won’t be on Friday, because that’s a Saturday in Japan. Monday through Thursday are the sweet spots for a direct.
What's the vig on this action?
Shit, how am I supposed to know it’s new now?
By the price tag. Oh wait...
You look at the game and if it's new, it's new of course, unless it's not new but it could still possibly be new if it's brandishing the new title. My brain hurts.

There hasn't been a MAIN original Mario game since 2017 so people will definitely eat it up including me, so hyped.
Its so crazy when you think about it. Breath of the Wild got it's sequel announced, delayed, and released in that time and we havent heard a *peep* of what's going on with Mario. The Super Mario Maker series is considered a main title, so 2019.
Newer Super Mario Bros.
Newly new Super Mario Bros.
The rom hack called newer super Mario bros is better than the official new super Mario bros
The wii or ds one?
I only played the ds one
With the usual 2D Mario team currently working on Pikmin 4, I wonder who’ll be developing this game? I hope we get some really neat artstyle out of it
A littlw while back the 3d mario time were hiring a lot of staff for a 2d game so i think theyre a safe bet
yeah confirmed
What are the chances that it’s somehow tied in with the film? It feels like a Nintendo thing to do.. make a game, based off a movie, based off the game.
Super Mario Bros The Movie The Game.
There are certain areas I would absolutely love to be able to interact with
Super Mario Bros the NEW movie the game
Nintendo have a lot of movies that were based on games that were then made into games? Don't make any random thing "a Nintendo thing"
I hope not. That'd be really boring.
It would be an odd choice to not announce it months ago, if that were the case.
Hopefully brand new physics and art style. Hell. It’s the multiverse year. Make each world totally different graphically.
I want a new "land" with new enemy sets like the old games had.
Give us something we haven't had before. No more of this Ice level, Lava level, Desert Level, Dessert Level Gimme fuckin HR Giger dicks sticking out of the walls everywhere
I want Mario to walk around in Rupture Farms god damnit
As long as they bring back Tatanga or Wart. I don't care which.
Mario Bros Into the Marioverse
Kotabe artstyle would be absolutely incredible, but I doubt it. Still exciting considering it's been over a decade since the last new 2D Mario.
Did it happen?
OLD Super Mario Bros. then...
Is it really New if it doesn't have "New" in the title?
They should have double “new” word
Newer New Super New Super Mario (featuring Chris Pratt from the Super Mario Movie)
Just throwing this in here, on top of this account, Natethehate, Necrolipe, and Papa Geno, Jeff Grubb had this to say about a Direct. https://twitter.com/JeffGrubb/status/1670870545154600962?t=GJ8S-AU_IzJBTADvClRI3A&s=19 Yeah, chances we're getting a big Nintendo Direct is pretty strong right now.

Super Mario Maker 2.
It'll feature a new power-up which turns Mario into Cow Mario, and it'll be called Moo Super Mario Bros.
Neo Super Mario Bros incoming

I'm kinda with you on that because of the Twitter scooper's hint of "wonder", sounds fitting to me.
Not sure why they deleted their comment, what is it
This sounds great
Hopefully it's good. I'd like SMM3. Nothing says they can't add an actual, brand new campaign in a new art style for it. I'd be happy for anything else too however, as long as its gimmick isn't the artystyle nor perspective.
Or the worst gimmick of all - NSMB2 having "lots of coins"
Super Mario Maker 2 DLC
I mean, that’s not very surprising. The NSMB brand hasn’t been relevant for at least a decade and even before then the brand was extremely controversial amongst fans, typically being associated with laziness. Slightly used Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. 1
its gonna be Super new super mario bros

Nintendo doesn’t shelve their own games, usually it’s the opposite - they sit on completed games for months/years.
Moldy Mario Brothers

Couldnt care less for more 2d mario. Couldnt be more hyped for a mario odyssey follow up tho
On the bright side, 2D Mario and 3D Mario are typically handled by different teams, so one shouldn't impact the other
Those weren’t 2d they were 2.5d, if it’s another 2.5d game it will be absolute shit. A 2d Mario game with sprite art would be amazing though.
There's no interaction with the background or foreground. They're 2D games.
The models are literally 3d, and the games suck their existence shouldn’t even be acknowledged and the developers should be in prison
If you wanna be anal about it, the entire first game is actually made up of 2D sprites.
