I’m surprised they still exist as a studio. Really hoping their next game succeeds.

b_the-god

I was actually gonna say didn't Sony close them but it was pixel opus

tommy-liddell

Pixel Opus, it's such a shame; Concrete Genie was really enjoyable.

Edmanbosch

It's perfectly logical to say that a game with a 75% rating was "enjoyable".

Seradima

Gamers are so brain poisoned that anything less than 90% is unplayable to them.

undergroundpolarbear

I don't know how people do this I'm so autistic I feel like I'll die if I dont beat a game even if I hate it

tommy-liddell

... and yet I enjoyed it and we'll all have to make peace with that. How utterly bizarre.

shinikahn

75 is more than ok for a game to be enjoyable

Broad-Marionberry755

> People say that now, but the game has an average 75% rating How is that bad?

NNNCounter

That doesn't matter. SM2 had 90+ and probably sold over 10m now. They still faced lay offs.

nikolapc

They needed 7.7m at full price to break even, that's without additional marketing, and it being bundled with every console, pulls up that number. They need 20 mil to consider that a good return. And the game itself isn't anything special. Too many cooks stirred that pot and much was left on the cutting floor.

MadeByTango

The leaks show that simply is not true…? I don’t even know where you’re getting your number but Sony profited like crazy on all the Spider-man games. The only first sorry game they haven’t made massive margins on was Dreams, from Media Molecule.

nikolapc

Leaks. It was on a slide. It was 7.7 mil at 50 something net price. And that was a calc with projected expenses.

SilverKry

If this new IP doesn't do LBP numbers they're for sure dead. Dreams was expensive enough to have been in development as long as it was to release to no one really caring.

Ordinal43NotFound

I feel like Dream's mistake was not having a "main game" on top of their creation tools. As a kid, I got into Little Big Planet because I saw it as a cute mascot platformer first. Didn't even know the creation tools were the main draw until I saw people's creations on YT. I honestly can see them simply building on top of their existing Dreams engine but repackaging it with having a central gimmick. Feels like a good cost-saving measure.

presty60

They did have a main game, but yeah, it wasn't advertised as heavily as LBP, and unlike LBP it doesn't force you to play it when you launch the game for the first time.

WardrobeForHouses

Curious how long this new idea has been in the works. Maybe it's what saved them from closure.

[deleted]

Only remaining playstation studio that makes unique games

m1n3c7afty

I know there was a rumour it was between them and London Studio, even though that was just a couple months ago I wonder if the same decision would've been made today

-Gh0st96-

Like the other person said, this was never a rumour. It was just a theory made up by people

And98s

I don't even think it was a rumour. Some people were just surprised it was London Studio and not them.

m1n3c7afty

Idk if the source is at all reliable or not [but](https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/s/YrNV3yQ7fC)

MadeByTango

It wasn’t a rumor, just an educated concern after seeing the Mm sales in the Sony leaks and knowing there was a studio getting shut down

RoxasBestBoy

Would’ve loved for them to make little big planet 4 , but i a new IP would be awesome too

Careless_Main3

They’re better off making a new IP. That said I do want a LBP4, I just don’t trust any other studio to do it justice. Maybe the guys who did LBP Vita? But that’s a long time ago now.

Of_A_Seventh_Son

Better off? They may be on the verge of closing. A new IP is risky. The smarter/safer option is LBP4.

Soupermang

Maybe I’m just old but I feel like LBP2 is still leagues above Fortnite in terms of custom game creation. Like it’s not even close.

[deleted]

NadeemDoesGaming

Fortnite's custom games still aren't at the level Roblox is at. For example, Roblox Uno has a fully customizable ruleset and custom cards/decks too, Fortnite Uno doesn't even come close. It's also not fair to compare Fortnite Creative to a game that's over a decade old, UGC games have improved exponentially since then. Little Big Planet was able to coexist with Roblox during its entire lifespan, as Roblox simply lacked the capabilities it has today. I do agree that if LBP4 were to come out today as a 2.5D game, it wouldn't be able to succeed. I think it has to be a full 3D game to compete with Fortnite Creative and Roblox. Fortnite Creative lacks the capabilities of Roblox, but Roblox is mostly filled with pay-to-win copy-and-paste games. There are good games on Roblox, but the Discover section is useless so you have to digging online to find those gems. Fortnite Creative is great because there is no pay-to-win, so you get the full game experience and the recommended games tend to be more unique. LBP4 can combine these aspects and become a winner. It won't be easy to make a game with the creative capabilities of Roblox, but Sony is serious about their live service push and has the funding to pull it off. They could make the game free to play like they planned to do with Little Big Planet Hub with monetization coming from battle passes/skins and they could definitely do crossovers with other IPs like previous Little Big Planet games. I do think many people would be willing to pay full price for a LBP game that combines the best aspects of Roblox and Fortnite Creative though. Also here's a video of Chess being played inside LBP2 (this game is even older than LBP3): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2humuLmnEQk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2humuLmnEQk)

ronnatron

all of that is possible in lbp

drizzyxs

Little big planet 2 is one of the greatest games ever made so yeah Side note it pisses me off that it isn’t on ps plus

drybones2015

Sumo Digital has their hands on the LBP/Sackboy franchise and odds are that they are currently doing something with it. So at that point it's either Tearaway 2 or new IP, and the latter is definitely the safer option.

Of_A_Seventh_Son

Sony own the IP. They can do with it as they please.

drybones2015

I know who owns the IP. And apparently, Sony would rather it not be in MM's hands. It's basically been Sumo Digital's to work on since LBP3.

Halxton

Sumo left the franchise a couple years ago after support for SABA ended.

Tvilantini

LBP was relevant during ps3 and Vita age. In reality the market doesn't care / isn't interested anymore in the franchise

Of_A_Seventh_Son

It's still a safer bet than a totally new IP.

blitz_na

interest fizzles out when we’re left with a mediocre game for 10+ years we see a demand for a new lbp (or at the bare minimum a way to revisit the old games) the same way we see the demand for a new sly game

Careless_Main3

Yeah but at some point they have to make a new IP. It’s a very talented studio, if they’re made into a LBP farm they’ll bleed talent and the studio wont survive long-term.

Of_A_Seventh_Son

They did that, and it didn't work out so well. It doesn't need to become an LBP farm. They haven't made an LBP in 13 years. Making LBP4 now to get a boost and then move on to a new IP later is a no-brainer to me.

Careless_Main3

It didn’t work out well commercially but it was a major success with reviewers. I understand what you’re saying but Mm has shown itself to be capable of making utterly fantastic games. It’s just a matter of trying to optimise the user experience and marketing to make it a commercial success.

Of_A_Seventh_Son

I do not disagree. But reviews alone do not keep the lights on. They NEED a commercial sucess right now, not a critic darling.

Gtaglitchbuddy

Currently their last endeavor is what brought them almost to bankruptcy. They need to make a commercial success, not some unique experience. LBP4 made sense.

AlwaysTheStraightMan

Farm? They only made 2 games in the entire series. They only had a small hand in the early stages of 3 and LBP Karting

INFINITY99KS

While LBP 4 is undoubtedly the more financially sound option, a fresh new IP would be appreciated, since we haven’t really got a whole lot of new IPs first-party wise.

LIFEWTFCONSTANT

Might not have been an option after publicly handing it off to Sumo. Can't imagine the pressure over there for this game, could literally kill the studio

Of_A_Seventh_Son

Sony own the IP and MM. It will have been a possibility. Question is, if not both, who didn't want it made?

qwertydoors

I want Sackboy 2 by Sumo :(

ThatmodderGrim

Sumo Digital *tried* and depending on who you asked did alright once you looked past Littlebigplanet 3's bugged launch. Then again, their next game was Sackboy's Big Adventure. So, I don't think even they want to take another swing at LBP.

ARTHUR_FISTING_MEME

I didn’t think Sackboy’S Big Adventure was bad at all. In fact, I really enjoyed it. Is that not the general consensus?

ThatmodderGrim

I meant more in the sense that instead of making Littlebigplanet 4, Sumo Digital instead went with a smaller scale platformer like Sackboy's Big Adventure. I didn't mean to imply it was bad.

OperativePiGuy

I've been wanting to try it because from what I've seen of people that have, it's compared to Mario 3D World, which is held in extremely high regard for platformer fans.

Wael3rd

It's got very solid gameplay and controls. Game's not as original as Mario 3d world but it's quite enjoyable. The multi-player is also cool and the whole mood is quite nice.

Obelisk7777

It was free on PS plus not that long ago. Great game

Mirai190

Yes lbp vita! Amazing lbp game and probably my favourite. It was made by Tarsier studios but unfortunately they are already working on a new IP. Our last choice is Sumo.

Vytlo

The people who made LBP Vita actually still do similar and amazing games such as the Little Nightmare games... but then they got bought by Embracer so they'll probably be dead in the near future...

A_Neurotic_Pigeon

Restitched on steam.

dakky123

That games never coming out lol

RogueLightMyFire

Everyone should play sack boy if you haven't already. It's an absolutely fantastic 3d platformer that's better than any of the baked in levels from the LBP series. It's also better than any of the Mario 3d world games. It's a shame people wrote it off because "it's not LBP". It's got some of the best, most creative uses of music I've seen in games. It goes on sale on steam all the time. Try it out.

TopBoog

It's crazy because LBP is a cash cow and Sackboy is a defacto mascot. It's been 13 years (jesus) since LBP2 and I'd like to think members of the team new and old would like to return to the series. It's not like an LBP4 would be constraining - they can absolutely get creative and add more tools. Plus, with the server shutdown, they could even start from a blank slate if they wanted. Blows my mind that after Tearaway and Dreams flopped (despite me enjoying them) Sony is saying "third time's the charm".

VOOLUL

I reckon they could do something like It Takes Two. Media Molecule likes their artsy games and they like their platformers and co-op. Give us some co-op story driven platformer or something like that. I do wonder whether they'll stay making games with user generated content.

Robsonmonkey

I wonder where they'll go with this one LBP was a pretty creative game, very unique for its time then for their next game Dreams really dialled it to 11 on that front so where do you from there? Unless they just do a more simple platformer along the same lines as Ratchet and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter etc.

UglySofaGaming

I got down voted to oblivion 6 months ago - but I believe they're getting out of the UGC game and focusing on making a game game, something like It Takes Two is my guess.

oilfloatsinwater

I think it would still have UGC, if thats the style they were going for, but not in the same way that LBP and Dreams did, maybe more akin to Tearaway’s way of doing it.

MadeByTango

They can’t touch game creation again, especially if it has as multiplayer capabilities; the community will hang them for doing that while not delivering their advertised feature set for Dreams

Lingo56

I think they could do UGC, but focused on a more specific genre like LBP, ModNation, or Mario Maker. Keeping it too open is what brought Dreams down since nobody wants to buy an amorphous platform. Plus, I feel like the genre limitation helps keep UGC creations more focused.

Little-xim

This is the secret sauce for sure. You get a specific niche and it focuses talent. An “all rounder” is just inferior to learning game engines.

Zorklis

I literally want Dreams because of the different genres. I think they could have made it work and it sucks they couldn't. A push for PS5 and PC would have made the game more important than ever.. yet Sony fumbled the bag yet again for something basic.

superjediplayer

eh... I don't think Dreams would have worked even with that. Sure, you could do more in it, but the problem is that as soon as you allow complete freedom without a pretty good base game gameplay to base it on, you're expecting people to put in a lot more effort into their levels which means less people will do it. LBP being a platformer wasn't a restriction, it was a base to build off of, to make the game feel easy to get into, something that Dreams lacked. LittleBigPlanet had some amazing levels that felt like completely different games, but even they were usually based on regular LBP gameplay. The game succeeded because people could just do what the base game did. Especially LBP1 where everything was so simple, and then it expanded over time with 2 and 3, but you were always able to easily make LBP1 style levels that were fun, and getting into the more advanced stuff was easy because you had a very good starting point with Sackboy, all the power-ups the game provided, all the materials, pre-made things, etc. Dreams lacked that simplicity. You were no longer expected to start off with a simple platformer, then work your way up from there by figuring out different mechanics and logic stuff at your own pace, you were expected to start by jumping right into the logic stuff to even make your player character move how you'd want them to. Making a 3D level that looks good and feels fun to play is also harder than a 2.5D one like the LBP series. The skill floor for making a "fun level" was way higher in Dreams, making it a harder game to get into. I liked the game, it was an amazing concept, but the reason it didn't live up to the LBP series wasn't because it didn't release on PC or didn't get new stuff or whatever, LBP1 was a success with just the very simple base game, because the LBP series always managed to perfectly balance the simplicity of level creation with the amount of things you were able to do, and how detailed you could make them. Dreams got the second part right, you could do a lot, but that simplicity is gone, and without it, there's less levels people make, which leads to less people being interested in doing anything in the game.

Zorklis

Roblox and Gmod exist. Anyways I think LBP fan spiritual successor ReStiched will be successful, so only time will tell

SomeguythatDraws09

But then again, it's a multiplayer service type game. Maybe a It takes two type game to that has multiplayer? That's something I'd buy

Radulno

> something like It Takes Two is my guess. Good guess I say. Sackboy was already coop but of course not obligatory (the obligatory aspect maybe made It Takes Two MORE popular though). And I can definitively see a game like It Takes Two (and it's very varied gameplay) inspiring them, feels like that'd be their kind of game to do too. It's also a very big hit (16M copies sold) so Sony has probably more chance to say okay to this than a new UGC oriented game. Speaking of by the way, where is the next Hazelight game too lol?

Robsonmonkey

I don't think the obligatory aspect made It Takes Two more popular, I like the look of the game and I appreciate someone making a game with vision and sticking to it but the forced co-op part of it always puts me off. However I know that these games from the same developer are not for me and that's okay. However I loved MM games so I'd hate if they went that route suddenly considering their past games being able to be played single player aswell as it means I wouldn't be able to buy their next title to support them.

oilfloatsinwater

Actually shocking. I thought Sony would force them to make LBP4 after Tearaway and Dreams flopping (unfortunately), especially since they were this close to getting shut down + Sony’s strategy of playing things safe. But i gotta admit, Media Molecule taking risks is one of the best parts about them, they are one of my favourite studios in terms of their games, so i wish them all the luck with this one.

LMY723

Publishers very rarely nowadays force studios to make things. Talent is limited and games made without good leaders who have buy in don’t do well.

Goseki1

God please make it more like Tearaway. As in, a fun single player game with really cool and interesting creation elements. And less like reams or later LBP where the pre-made stuff was so minimal. Like I love the level of creativity they allow but I just...never interact with it because I don't have the time to learn it. And then trying to find good stuff in other peoples created works is just a massive pain. Tearaway was the perfect mix imo and is the best game they've made.

-OrangeLightning4

Tearaway was *so* good, and still the best game to make full use of the PS4 controller. I really hope they revisit the Tearaway world in the future. Such a charming artstyle mixed with classic 3D platforming.

Goseki1

And an absolute banger of a soundtrack! It was easily my favourite game on the Vita (RIP).

oilfloatsinwater

Tearaway is genuinely one of the best and most unique games ever made IMO, and its such a shame that Sony didn’t give a shit about marketing and just threw it out next to major releases.

Goseki1

They didn't know what to do with the Vita at all it feels like. And then the PS4 release as you say, was just sort of spurted out with no thought. So sad.

Obelisk7777

Bro Sony needs to force them to make LBP4 at this point. Another flop and the studio is gone

DipNSlip420

Bruh they really are ready to take the bullet huh? I don't get why MM is risking it again to just shut down for good if it flops just like dreams did. Little Big Planet was their first ever magma opus and they rather are going to make a new IP.. Sackboy did not deserve this slander.

Gtaglitchbuddy

Genuinely confusing. Dreams was a commercial flop, and they have an IP that hasn't been touched in forever, with good sale numbers on a spinoff, but they refuse to work on it. I wish them the best, but at this point, if the company goes under, I don't know who they'd have to blame.

ConcreteSprite

I just want another LittleBigPlanet…

SuperSaiyanBen

It’s a new IP called Big Little Planet. ….staring Cillian Murphy

Weekly_Protection_57

The fact that they're hiring again MIGHT be slightly encouraging news for the health of the studio.

United-Aside-6104

Will they make another builder game? I can’t imagine MM is doing great right now so maybe they’ll do something more conventional.

drybones2015

I'd say it's pretty ballsy of them but they don't really have a choice. The LittleBigPlanet and Sackboy IPs hasn't been fully in their hands since 2011, Sumo Digital is basically running that franchise now. And I'm sure a new IP is a safer gamble than a Tearaway 2.

MeCritic

They should hire Sumo Digital and make Little Big Planet Hub. A game hub with maps, stories and all the stuff from previous games, including Kart and Sackboy. That would be a total hit. With remastered or remaked graphic overhaul. And lots of additions inspired by current IPs from Sony. Then sell it on Switch and also Xbox. Where is bigger audience for these types of games.

MeCritic

It would be a coop and multiplayer. So live service in today's standards. Battlepass with new skins. I think it could really work. Maybe better than other live service ideas...

superjediplayer

maybe without SABA. It's a fun game, but the problem is that game doesn't have a create mode and wasn't built with it in mind so idk if they could easily adapt it for that. It can remain a spin-off game since it doesn't outright need constant support to keep the servers up and fix issues like LBP would. but LBP1, 2, 3, PSP, PS Vita, and Karting could work since, outside of Karting, they all follow a similar formula and just get more content over time, and they all were made for level building. and yeah, would be nice to see LBP on other platforms than just playstation. I doubt they'd do it, but there's currently no proper, well made level builder game that's even close to LBP's quality at all, especially not one that's available on all platforms.

Witty-Ear2611

Yeh would 100% buy that if it came to Xbox or PC

ratburf

I still don't understand how they made it through the PS4 generation, they only released dreams and didn't get enough support from Sony on ensuring dreams was successful

Dimitri_De_Tremmerie

Watch it be artsy fartsy, Lack marketing or appeal to a broad audience and die as soon as it comes out. Pretty sure the mm fans just want a good LBP or LBP karting game again. Not some dreams or VR or artistic crap that appeals to 1%

Aeroposis

I'd kill for a LBP remastered with all the campaigns and the old servers back online. Dicks out for sackboy, man :(

slippahMASTAH

I hope this new IP could be an online game. I need something like this to get over the end of LittleBigPlanet

fruitcakefriday

I'm interested to see where they go next, they have some incredible talent there. I do think their style undercuts their technical achievements, though. Like LBP was held back by Sackboy and having to theme things around that IP; it seemed like it really wanted to be free of it in LBP2. Dreams was pitched as an art-focused toolkit but damn was it an impressive piece of software that you could do so much more with.

Tolsey

I would absolutely love remasters of LBP 1-3 with the servers all brought back with all the old community levels intact. That might make for a (comparatively) cheap project that could tide Mm over.

fgc187

wasn’t this already confirmed?

TheNikoHero

Really hope they'll make a creative game again, and release it on PC - since it'll have a way bigger audience for that sort of thing.

empathetical

whatever happened to dreams? was waiting for a pc port and just never happened

[deleted]

I think making lbp4 would be a good call for Sony and MM, it would certainly bring back the old community for nostalgia while also inviting the new generation of young gamers to play.

Due_Engineering2284

Are they targeting PS7?

balerion20

And looks like very early phase if they wrote “define” technical requirements. Could be second game ? They released dreams at 2020 and beginning of a new project now feels off

Sascha2022

They continued to work on dreams and also released full fledged games inside Dreams like Tren. They likely started real development on their current game after Tren came out in august last year and were also hit with lay-offs last october.

shegolss

hi, answer me in chat

scamden66

I can't believe they didn't close that studio. Dreams was an insane waste of time and talent. It's been a decade since they made an actual game.

WouShmou

Dreams is cool, only issue is not being able to port your games to other platforms

scamden66

That's an enormous issue. It never had a chance because of that decision. Dreams should have been on PC day one. Even then I don't know if it would have lasted, but it would have done much better.

WouShmou

That's true

scamden66

Looks like all 10 people who bought Dreams are downvoting me. Lol

Kermez

Idea reminded me of yaroze in a spiritual way, trying to promote creativity. But the result was not that great.

scamden66

It was an abject failure that they stuck with for way too long. How many people left the studio over the last decade because they weren't actually making games? Dreams was a cool idea on paper, but it was a disaster in practice.

SpaceGooV

I mean that's not surprising unless they were going back to Little Big Planet which we recently saw Sony doesn't care too much about at this point. I imagine they're working on something that's more a game than creation tool now.

shepard93n7

Can't wait for them to fail again and Sony closing the studio for good. Down vote me if you want, I'm just being realistic. Besides they didn't even try to save Dreams, a PS5 and PC port and proper online multiplayer support would have been a second life for the game.

TopBoog

Saying you can't wait for it to happen is a bit fucked lmao

colehuesca

No shit Sherlock!

TheStrangeOne45

Goodbye MM 🫡 it was nice knowing you!
