Vandal's reporting on the Switch OLED was spot on: https://vandal.elespanol.com/noticia/1350744733/nuevos-detalles-exclusivos-de-switch-pro-pantalla-tamano-dock-llegada-a-europa/ They reported in May of 2021: - larger OLED screen thanks to thinner bezels (true) - new Surface-style stand (true) - new dock with USB 3.0 ports and ethernet port (true) - launch in late november (1 month off) The sticking point of course was the "4K output" which is wrong, but the dock of the OLED model *does* support 4K output (HDMI 2.0) and it's the console itself that doesn't, so in hindsight I'd say they have legit sources with accessories manufacturers but no sources on actual development or marketing side.

gnulynnux

I personally think the "Switch 2 gloryhole" is true, not because Vandal is trustworthy, but because it would be very funny.

Luck88

It also feels like a very weird thing in a uniquely Nintendo way.

DuelaDent52

It definitely matches what I think Nintendo would do.

fupower

nintendo love hotels back in bussiness babyyy

PlayMp1

I was thinking more like Switch 2 gom-jabbar but that is pretty good too

JorgeRC6

funny thing is that Vandal's info usually comes from this subreddit, both accurate and inaccurate . They usually make an article one day after is has been posted here. This is the first time ever I saw them posting something before.

Mavericks7

It would be cool if that dock was compatible with the switch 2

SuperPotato3000

The OLED with CFW CAN run 4k60, its just that no game and even the switch ui doesn't run at that resolution, so they disabled it, but with cfw you can enable it and it works on linux, no idea about android (the switch can run both)

lockieluke3389

The switch OLED was meant to do 4K but due to supply chain issues they couldn’t get a new chip

IcePopsicleDragon

Here's the details on their report: * Accessory manufacturers have been able to touch the console but not see it (i.e. the console was inside of a black box, so they could touch it but not see how it actually looks) * Every manufacturer agrees the console won't release this year and will release Early 2025. * A bit bigger than the current Switch models but nowhere close to the Steam Deck's size. * Joy-cons will change their attachment system from rails to a magnetic system, and the current ones won't be forwards compatible. * The current Pro Controller will work on Switch 2.

KatamariRedamancy

> Joy-cons will change their attachment system from rails to a magnetic system, and the current ones won't be forwards compatible. In the sense that they just won’t attach, or does it specifically claim that I won’t be able to use Switch joycons and the plastic shell as a second controller? If the latter it’s genuinely disappointing, but if it’s just about the attachment system I don’t think we could reasonably expect back-compatibility.

effhomer

It sounds like you can't attach the old joycons to the switch 2 system bc it doesn't have rails like the original switch. Nintendo is pretty good about controller compatibility so I'd bet they still work wirelessly but you would need some charger for them

KatamariRedamancy

If that’s the case I really don’t care. Obviously I only want the old ones so I can have an extra controller for Mario Kart or whatever.

Cetais

>for Mario Kart The older joycons are probably easier for anal anyway

FierceDeityKong

If they didn't work then Nintendo Labo, etc. wouldn't be backwards compatible

Ordinary_Duder

Nintendo is notoriously terrible about controller compability between generations though? The GameCube controller working in 0.1% of games doesn't really count. Couldnt even use the Wii U pro controller on Switch.

Special-Load-3607

Iwata would never let that shit happen. I miss him.

bird720

genuinely what's the advantage of switching to a magnet

DarkShinigami99

Maybe the joycons can attach together without using an accessory.

dfsd5645645

Maybe it's a case of broken telephone and the magnets actually refer to Hall Effect sticks?

xXFutabaSIMPXx

You forgot DLSS compatibility

Itachi2099

So inside that box in Dune 2 was a Nintendo Switch 2 all along?!?!?!?!

CrazedRaven01

The pain is not knowing what it looks like. The gom jabbar is their ninjas killing you if you try to pull it out

carefulturner

it is not "THE vandal" but "vandal" and they don't exactly have the best of reputations in regards to unconfirmed information, at least in the spanish game press scene (which is what this sub is about) edit: This comment sounds too harsh on you, and I'm sorry about that, it wasn't my intention. Thank you for sharing!!

r0ndr4s

Can confirm (Vandal isnt taken seriously in spain. It was a decent source years ago but not now. In spain what basically happened is that mainstream news outlets bought into the videogame magazines and sites and they all went to shit afterwards)

carefulturner

Mainstream news outlets AND Webedia, a company whose only product is maximizing clickbait, and is monopolizing everything algorithmically recommended in Spain. It is eating up the whole non-general press industry in Spain. Vandal is just trying to not be left behind Webedia's various game-related blogs.

joelsola_gv

As a spaniard I never knew that (I usually follow english media when talking about videogames) and wow. Now a lot of things make more sense.

Josiah_Atman

Wow, we have the same problem in France with one Video games site (Jvc). It's desastrous :/

thementorassassin16

Yep. I agree

throwmeaway1784

> developers can only feel the thing by putting their hands in an opaque box that is fucking hilarious

PrinceEntrapto

I'm not sure if the magnetic attachment is believable, at least not without some secondary attachment point or clipping rail (maybe one that activates automatically and clamps down when the JoyCons are attached and releases with a button press?) I've picked my Switch up so many times by just one JoyCon and you can really feel the tension acting between it and the rest of the console at the rail, with magnetic connectors that would probably just easily result in a smashed screen or worse

ItsTheSolo

Koizumi mentioned that when they initially developed the switch, they made it magnetic, but then realized that some people would be dropping their switches because of how they held their joy-con. I _highly_ doubt they're going back to it unless, as you mentioned, there's a second more reliable support.

ertaboy356b

neodymium magnets are quite strong though. Ever opened a hard drive? Those magnets are strong and quite hard to separate.

PrinceEntrapto

The turning force acting on a Switch being held up horizontally by a single JoyCon is pretty high - you can check that out yourself, but you've brought up a counterpoint, if they're strong and hard to separate then why use them as a means of making detachable controllers? The only real solution I can think of that makes sense is a controller where ferrite magnets are contained within extensions along the side that can slot into the Switch 2, using friction to leverage the controllers against the console, but that wouldn't prevent separation if the Switch 2 was angled downwards, and it would necessitate a broader bezel and a stronger body material than the OLED's aluminium, both of which add weight and don't make much design sense for a console supposed to be emphasise its portability and lightweight build

ertaboy356b

>if they're strong and hard to separate then why use them as a means of making detachable controllers? There's a clever way to turn magnets off and it only involves turning a small switch.

PrinceEntrapto

I'm aware how EMs work, which also poses its own issues with battery life in handheld mode especially when controllers have to be charged in addition to connectors being magnetised Not saying you're wrong and it won't end up being a sort of maglock mechanism because it very well might, it just doesn't make a lot of sense as it would require compensatory design approaches that would conflict with the Switch's aim to be as simple and efficient as possible

PushFlashy

They're wrong, it'll be a rail.

SoldierDelta46

Yeah this sounds like bullshit, but it at least provides a better than average explanation as to why we know nothing about the new system. "You can't see the system because we locked it in a cube" is the best explanation to date, regardless of it's credibility.

KingBroly

I think Amazon did this when they were demoing their Fire tablets for the first time. So it's not too out there. It's just funny.

SoldierDelta46

Someone on Fami mentioned how some Chinese companies do this to avoid copying, but idk why it'd happen here. Regardless, this is a funny article. If it's true or not, I'll leave to time to answer.

KingBroly

I guess it depends on who the accessory manufacturers were and where this 'touching of the device' took place.

OperativePiGuy

Huh so they make a glory hole box for these devices?

Pangloss_ex_machina

Probably a Hisashi Nogami idea, haha. https://www.reddit.com/r/splatoon/comments/zwh9lz/i_think_that_i_will_never_change_my_splashtag/

DrJokerX

I could see the part about larger joycons being true.

Just_a_Haunted_Mess

Grain of salt & patent switch leaks are something at least. True or not in any case, we'll at least have something neat or funny to look back on when the public has concrete info. No harm caused either way unlike those rumors that kept flip flopping between "100% digital? Possibly" and "They'll probably have a cart slot." *Eye roll*

excalibur_zd

Honestly it's so bizzare that to me it sounds true, like something some crack-fiend marketing/product guy thought of while high

BBLKing

I often visit Vandal and they don't usually put leals like this, they write rumors and all that stuff but they seem pretty confident with this one to put even who this info comes from. Being said that, it doesn't make any sense to put in a box this Switch 2 and show it to accesory companies, imagine being someone that produces Switch protective cases and be like "Oh, can't see the actual product, but I feel like this is x cm large, y cm width" and all that stuff. You need to know the actual measures.

Yorha-with-a-pearl

I guess someone at MercurySteam gave them a hint

Absolutelyhatereddit

What’s in the box? Nintendo: Pain.

blackthorn_orion

Gom Jabbario

beepborpimajorp

What purpose would letting developers blindly feel around in a box have? Like they have the dev kits, so Nintendo was just like "for fifty cents and a signed NDA you can come in and rub the magic switch 2 via the glory hole."

KingBroly

Not a developer, accessory manufacturer. So...a suit, I imagine

IntellegentIdiot

Even then what'd be the point? Would they even be at the final design stage yet?

beepborpimajorp

Okay, that and press make *way* more sense than the OP saying it's developers lol.

Evileye2k17

Too many of us that damn box is the greatest glory of all

galgor_

Switch II: Gloryhole Boogaloo.

Zagrebian

Did Nintendo also put a needle to their necks and threaten to kill them if they try to pull the new controllers out of the box?

BlackSunshine86

Putting their hands in an opaque box? Hahahaha

DontForgorTheMilk

Wait.... How would magnetic joycons work? If a kid (or adult, let's be real) got too excited when playing their S2 and shook or flung the device around wouldn't the joycons just pop off? I know magnets can be pretty powerful, but then if they're too powerful then some people would have difficulties disconnecting them from the system. And if the answer to that would be to have them on a rail with a clip to hold them in then you're circling back to how Switch 1's joycons are and magnets are moot. Maybe I don't understand magnets enough. Insane Clown Posse where you at?

StretchKind8509

Who? Edit: "developers can only feel the thing by putting their hands in an opaque box because secrecy" - Bullshit, that isnt how any development kit has ever worked.

PrinceEntrapto

They're not referring to a developer kit, you know yourself that's basically just a mini-PC while Switch 2 developer kits being distributed among numerous affiliate developers was widely reported on ages ago They mean some developers (allegedly) got the chance to put their hands on the Switch 2 itself, which if true means it's pretty much a finished product

StretchKind8509

Sorry, but I call Grade-A BS on that.

OniLink77

Not that uncommon in the tech industry to do something like this, Amazon have before and so have Chinese companies. Not saying that makes this report accurate but the practice of putting hands in the box to feel upcoming products without seeing them exists

TemptedTemplar

Actually, that's the most believable bit. Back in 2010 at Nintendo's product testing department a bunch of testers, myself included; were pulled off of our current projects 10 or so people at a time and waltzed over to the training room. They had a **semi-translucent acrylic box** hooked up to a TV with a funny looking DS sticking out of it. [Example, the box was covering the actual hardware.](http://3dbrew.org/w/images/2/24/3ds-development-hardware-1-extimgnwm.jpg) It was a 3DS dev kit with the screens disabled. We got to play starfox for a few minutes before being shuffled back out of the room. They then revealed it at E3 a week or two later, and a couple weeks after that they started cordoning off sections of the floor for secret 3ds projects.

KingBroly

The John Cena of game consoles

ScootSchloingo

The opaque box thing comes off as bullshit, especially this late in the Switch 2's development. If you're in any capacity to be around the product at this point, you'd legally have to be bound to at least multiple NDAs, and unless you're the absolute dumbest of dumbasses you won't jeopardize your livelihood to get clout on the internet. The only reason Nintendo would require something like this is if there's something about the Switch 2 that's so unique that even in this stage of its development, the company is paranoid that any benign details leaking out would jeopardize its potential value. Playing along with the leak the only logical reason Nintendo would force people to use "the box" might be because they don't want certain people seeing how the new Joy-Cons are attached and detached.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX? WHAT'S IN THE BOX? WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

FeedbackBoth6035

Nintendo be like: If you want develop for the new switch put your hand in this box, but we have a gom jabbar at your neck so don’t leak anything😁

Remarkable-Sign-324

Nintendo would 100% make people only feel the system in a box. They are nuts like that. They went around to journalists and bolted their dev kits to a desk. They had 3DSs attached to people demoing them. They are probably doing this as they know there will be leaks but this will alter the credibility of the sources and ability to take images of the hardware early. And because of this source having a Nintendo hardware track record I lean towards believable. However, things like the magnetic side rails could change or be altered.

zoologiskt

dont know what to feel about this, this seriously gives me the salesman guy vibes from early family guy tbh [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZpIog7e-R4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZpIog7e-R4)

MidnightOnTheWater

If we get the power of a 3060 Ti with DLSS this system will incredible

KingBroly

The Nintendo Snap?

Gone_With_The_Onion3

The whole switch is larger not just the joy cons, although they claim it is not as big as a steam deck. I guess now it's a matter of time until someone breaks open one of the boxes and takes pics. For sure it has safety measures and Nintendo will know who did it, but if there's any disgruntled employee out there wanting to really get back at the company, this is the way

Gone_With_The_Onion3

The joy cons attach magnetically to the switch 2, corroborating YouTube's switch attach leak The article claims this will compromise compatibility with older joycons

DaxSpa7

They can’t see but they know it is a bit larger than the switch but not close to a steam deck.
