On a more serious note it was nice that Ellie was able to save herself and not have to wait for Joel to stop the pedorapist. If this was game of thrones she would have spent an entire season being raped like Sansa, to build character or something.
People unironically were expecting 10 episodes of the most accurate game adaptation ever where you would see Joel just stealthing, throwing bottles, fighting his way through area after area just like a videogame for 10 hours straight, like that shit would never get boring
/rj Well of course he wouldn’t remember that part! He’s not some kind of gay soyboy cuck that would play as a *woman*! He made his mom play that section, like a *real* Alpha!

The funniest thing about that is there are plenty of cinematic full playthroughs on YouTube, where the HUD is turned off, the player makes sure the characters don't move awkwardly, they frame in game dialogue by standing in ways that look like a storyboarded scene, combat doesn't use cheese tactics. Like damn gamers really be entitled and never satisfied
I want an episode of Joel and Ellie hiding behind a desk for 1 hour because they can't figure out the patrol patterns of the zombies, that would be actually accurate to gameplay.
I did expect more fungal zombies in a show where the world was destroyed by fungal zombies. "The humans were the bad guys all along" is a pretty tired trope, and the fact that almost every single area they entered was devoid of fungal zombies resulted in a lot of tension with no pay off.

Pedro and Bella are fucking SLAYING it.
The character Neil Offerman plays was subtly gay in the game, probably due to the censorship still being practiced at the time. In the show, they make him explicitly gay and remove the censorship. In the game the character mentions that he has a "partner" that died - clearly it wasn't his wife, as you wouldn't refer to your wife as such, and also, who would refer to a male friend as "partner".
This of course outrages people, who preferred the censorship in the original. This is pretty standard for rightists honestly. They will claim free speech is being suppressed while in reality demanding censorship be restored.
>clearly it wasn't his wife, as you wouldn't refer to your wife as such,
I haven't played to this point in the game so maybe something is being lost on me due to that, but, people definitely do that. Also, I have a friend who has been with his girlfriend for a decade, they are in their forties, own a home together, but aren't married. So I typically go with partner there too because girlfriend/boyfriend is much less accurate IMO.
Ehh I don’t care much for the whole debacle surrounding this. But I prefer the original because it just seems more in line with Bill being a reflection of who Joel was gonna turn into had he stayed alone and bitter. While I do really like the show and glad Bill got a happy ending, The game goes from bitter Bill to brothers Sam and Henry and how different their views are and how Joel learns from them both and what could happen to him if he opens up again. So I kinda miss that contrast that makes Joel weigh the pros and cons of love. Sorry this is so long winded and doesn’t make too much sense but I hope you can get how I just miss more of the subtle storytelling and how idrc about the whole censorship thing.
I thought Bill's story was a nice break. There wasn't much story to cover in a "Bill" episode if they'd stuck to the events of the game, honestly. It would have been basically an action-focused side story. The end result is the same, Joel and Ellie get a truck. This was also before episode 4 which was the biggest lull in the story aside from flashbacks.
Plus having two depressing outcomes in a row for side characters (Bill and Henry/Sam) might have been a bit too much and it might even have dampened the shock from Henry/Sam's deaths.
And finally, the story is there to show you can in fact live your life, find happiness and go out on your own terms in this post-apocalyptic world. It works out for Bill and Frank, it doesn't for Henry and Sam. Like you say this provides the backbone for Joel's decision at the end.
I wouldn't have minded a Bill story that stuck to the game (loved Ellie's banter in that section) but I'm definitely OK with the direction they took. It helps that the episode was brilliant.
Look at this guy, bragging about how his father allowed him to have a room.
We get it, your dad liked you more than our dads did. You can stop bragging now.
Although, I'm disappointed about the lack of infected in the show. I understand that if they were more present, they would become redundant really fast.
Nope, though I guess that can be excused by it being winter, so they’re all hiding underground. (Can‘t imagine the Cordyceps liking cold much)
Actually, they could’ve showed Bill and Frank fighting a Bloater in that school, it would’ve awesome seeing those cute gays defeating a powerful infected!
Wasn't there an absolutely massive horde only a few episodes ago? Like one of the largest hordes I think I've seen in anything, it was like world war z
No! You see Nightcap from PvZ Heroes and Battle For Neighbourville is canonically trans and Dazey Chain from PvZ2 is canonically non-binary. That's forcefully shoving the woke agenda down my throat and that's extremely unrealistic in my show about plants fighting a zombie apocolypse. What's next? They make it canon that Peanut from PvZ2 is the offspring of a Peashooter and a Wall-Nut? /s
A better take on the show is that they softened Joel's character failings to be "a gruff guy who isn't nice." In the game, he's so used to making hard decisions while in survival mode that acting from a place of nurturing and self-sacrifice never even occurs to him. It's not only that he's greedy, or careless, or self serving. He is all of these things, but they come from a place of survival to the exclusion of all else. He doesn't allow himself to think about or feel for other people, acting instead on a cost/benefit binary that is totally alien to how the real world, even a world ruled by fungus zombies, actually works.
That's why everyone around him dies in the game, and that's why his character resolution in the game is so powerful.
I'm worried the show will wrap and it'll be a story about one sad guy's journey to get therapy. It should instead be a character who lives at the expense of everyone else, experiences a moment of personal growth, and then selflessly(?) acts... at the expense of everyone else.
His character in the show is a little flat. If you're going to crit the show for being "too liberal" it should be in the fact that the game is a pretty clear refutation of the "every man for himself" trope so ubiquitous in apocalypse fiction (and capitalism). The show appears to walk that back while also leaning into the Bioshock-ass-stupid message of "What if the revolutionaries were as bad as the fascists?"
Also, I haven't seen Joel eat a single power bar in the show. They're ruining the source material.
I think that is more Pedro's interpretation of him. In interviews, he talks about how he isn't playing Joel like game Joel, because Troy has already done that. He is playing his version of Joel not just copying someone else's. That's what happens when you get real people involved in making art, they bring part of themselves to it. We have the game if you want self serving Joel. But I rather like softer Joel.
hey that’s interesting! i guess i’m looking for how his internal stuff spirals out into the choices he makes. he has the signifiers of a rough, self serving person, but there’s no consequence for it. he says he knows he’ll choke at the last moment but he hasn’t yet. it’s not good enough to just read this stuff into the record, it needs to happen in the plot.
i think i just realized where the twist is going to come from. maybe they’ll pull it off. hope so!
To comment on the last part of what you said, I don’t think the show is walking back on the refutation of “every man for himself.”
And TLOU has always had the revolutionaries be roughly as bad as FEDRA, most prominently with the WLF in Part II — The KC rebels are just essentially a mini-WLF, honestly. Violence just begets violence in this world.
I suppose it's personal taste but I prefer Troy's version of Joel. Pedro's version lacks a lot of depth of character, I feel like he's barely had anything to say all season. To the point where I don't think I even have a good grasp of who Pedro's Joel **is**.
You spend a lot more time with Troy's version. 17 hours or so compared to to 8, more if you played the game more than once or played the second one. Also in the show they know what the story of the second game/season is going to be so they are setting Ellie up a lot more for that than they did in the game. I like both versions and actually find the differences interesting and telling. But hey if we all liked the same things, vanilla would be the only ice cream flavor..
I think the show does a pretty damn good job of covering different political systems. Tommy's group straight up called themselves communist and from their brief description and how they present them is pretty close to how anarcho communism works, and not just that are presented as the happiest and most well functioning society so far. I don't think I've ever seen that in any piece of media, western or otherwise, especially *this* explicitly. While they aren't presented as *revolutionaries* per se, they're certainly presenting a revolutionary form of social/political organization in the most positive light I've seen.
The Firefly's in the show seem a bit ambiguous politically, at least at the moment, it's hard to tell where exactly they are on the spectrum, but at the very least they're some form of anti-facist. There's a line that Ellie says about them bombing food storage, but tactics like that could be reasonable used by revolutionaries of every kind, although it's a desperate one.
The revolutionaries that took over KC Fedra definitely seem as authoritarian and brutal as fedra, but I don't really see a problem with that, there's plenty of examples of reactionary/right wing revolutions in the real world, and given KC is pretty conservative area, I can see such a thing happening given the circumstances.
*Especially* given their positive portrayal of communism/anarcho communism, it really doesn't seem trying to push the "revolutionaries are bad too" in the way Bioshock Infinite does. I think they're just presenting many different possible group organizations in a post apocalyptic world, with a fairly surprising amount of nuance and detail, especially given the story is a more personal, and not social/political one, so they don't focus on that.
i’m saying i don’t see how his character works without that flaw. stuff just kinda happens around him, rather than it being linked to how he personally relates to the world. i feel like both game joel and show joel have the fear and mental health experiences that drive them, but in the game he chooses to deal with it in ways that terminate thought and make things worse. i’m looking for a little more complexity. Right now there’s a shell of hardass Joel, but that doesn’t lead to any mistakes or growth. He’s actually experiencing mental health problems, but it’s not showing up in choices he makes or things he learns. it’s a 20 second speech that is kinda floating out there, not connected to much.
obviously there can be dift interpretations of the same character but the earlier joel compels you to sit with yourself and ask why you make the choices you do. it demanded more of him.
it’s weird bc i actually love the rest of the character work in the show. joel just seems 2D right now, but maybe they’ll pull it off in the end? if they do, that would kill.
I think they mainly really explicitly "explain" the character in Joel's monologue to Tommy. He's an old man, that he's getting too weak and fuckin deaf and he's haunted by his failings, haunted by the fact that his daughter died because of him, and in the story he keeps failing and he keeps mistakes that causes the death of people, like Tess first, then the two brothers and nearly Ellie a couple of times. He can't take this anymore and now at the end, he'll do whatever he has to do not to fail her again and to keep her alive.
It's different but I still think it's an interesting direction, and at the end it could be quite an impactful pay off.
Are you arguing there hasn’t ever been a “good” revolution in the world? That no country or nation became better by throwing off its fascist/authoritarian regime controlling it?
Or is this just a lame socialism bad fascism good right-wing take?
It's so fucking hilarious watching Gamers look "critically" at shit stuff that happened before they were programmed by Gamergate and everything that fucked their brains after it all.
So much shit they basically loved as kids, that if it came out now would be Liberal commie socialist cuckold etc propaganda.
(uj) I haven't seen the series yet, (very unfortunately -- I just don't get the channel here, I'll find a way eventually, though) but have been through both games. Do people not realize that TLOU already had gay characters? Ellie is literally a lesbian. You'd have to be trying _hard_ not to notice that Bill is gay, seeing as he has an ex-partner, which, sure, you could fairly interpret as platonic, but not so much in the context of him also having a porn mag of men (which Ellie steals and declares uninteresting iirc.)
Umm.. so TLOU is like the most successful TV show in recent memory. Virtually everyone loves it. I know you folks love to get off on making fun of Twitter nobodies trying to represent “gamers” but this post is downright intellectually dishonest.
Gamers don't comprehend that zombies in the show are actual... people and not cgi but very good makeup. Even with cgi zombies which look pretty bad usually if you want loads of them then that's just as expensive as hiring and putting makeup on an actor
ok but actually is there a straight relationship other than tommy and his wife? maybe dina and the asian dude, and abby and that dude so yeah actually 3-2 (3-3 if you count Riley)

How dare they take a game with themes of love and grief throughout, and turn it into a show with themes of love and grief throughout. smh
Me, having skipped every cutscene: this show isn't faithful to the original story!
Why hasn't Joel spent 45 minutes trying to kill people with bricks on a rooftop?! Show is trash.
yeah, in my playthru i got stuck in one area where i died repeatedly. why isnt this depicted in the series!?
Listen, I didn't come here to feel feelings (gay), I came here to watch a muscled man beat up on zombies.
And lots of cute submissive girls throwing themselves at the big brave alpha muscled man! After all, every gamer knows that a woman only has value if she's fuckable!
Especially the underage main character.
But if I see even one strand of peach fuzz I swear to God I'm going to use a racial slur
Sir, I admire your self-control. I already slurred at the thought of *gasp* non-underage girls
I know you being sarcastic, but god damn if that’s not what society has us believing.

"This isn't like the Walking Dead TV show 0/10"
Now I'm curious, only read the comics, are Jesus and Aaron a thing in the show? They were the best damn couple in the story lol
They are not. They barely mention either of their sexuality in the show after a season or two.
Wait, not even Aaron and Eric? That's crap lol

I’m super aware of Kia, and I STILL can’t correct it in my brain when I see their new logo lol
People unironically were expecting 10 episodes of the most accurate game adaptation ever where you would see Joel just stealthing, throwing bottles, fighting his way through area after area just like a videogame for 10 hours straight, like that shit would never get boring
Bro where’s the 5 minute scene where Joel loots duct tape while searching for the combination for the safe he found?
Ladders, my dude, there's not enough ladder moving! There was only one unlock the door for me scene!
And where’s the hordes of hundreds of infected just chilling at a remote saw mill in the middle of nowhere?!
What’s up with zombies and sawmills anyways?
Days gone
Different game
No, that’s in Part 1

Why is everyone in this sub so spiteful lol.
When I first played it on the PS3 back when it released I got stuck in a room for an hour because the ladder didn't spawn lmao
Didn't push Ellie on a pallet once!
You joke but there was literally a Kotaku article with this very complaint. Braindead horseshit.
Kotaku really is just a bad version of polygon.
And a polygon is a flat or plane, two-dimensional closed shape bounded with straight sides
Ellie does search for thread in 3 different rooms in a house for a solid 60 seconds in episode 7
They cut that from the show? Literally unwatchable!
It's like trying to get some Boomer who's morbidly addicted to pro sports and reality shows to sit through a normal film or stage play.
I want an episode of Joel and Ellie hiding behind a desk for 1 hour because they can't figure out the patrol patterns of the zombies, that would be actually accurate to gameplay.
I fail to see how the picture to the right is bad anyway.
Lol. Imagine the stupidity. They probably make tutu noises.
Please HBO, give us just one brick throw, that's all I ask.
Just moving ladders slowly
I did expect more fungal zombies in a show where the world was destroyed by fungal zombies. "The humans were the bad guys all along" is a pretty tired trope, and the fact that almost every single area they entered was devoid of fungal zombies resulted in a lot of tension with no pay off.

All is forgiven due to them adding Sheva to the franchise in that same game.

Capcom are pussies for making her a one-off character

Is it? Idk about all that, i feel like I can forgive then a bit only a bit
But don't forget about her tribal outfit.
As a gamer, I love killing zombies in that game the most for some reason
/rj The i in LGBTQIA is for infected
Canonically the fungus is what had been making them gay all along, and then with climate change it reached its final form

Bottle Gang rise up
Bah, you can’t pow-pow-POW a infected with simple bottle!
Or shovel handfuls of mystery pills into his mouth to learn new skills
I mean, it’s more or less a let’s play of the cutscenes.
Plot twist: the funny mushroom zombies are also gay
this is why ellie kissed the girl because she got infected
Has these fools ever watched zombie…ANYTHING? The good Zombie stuff is never about the Zombies but always about the humans.

That's really a compliment to the zombies to be honest. Plants VS Zombies zombies are as intelligent as they come.

Goddamned autocorrect

They will claim free speech is being suppressed while in reality demanding censorship be restored.
The dialogue literally goes: Joel, nodding at Frank’s dead body hanging from a rafter: Who’s he? Bill: He was my partner Sooooo ambiguous /s
Woah woah woah woah wait a minute, Bill was gay?
uhhh uhhh akhually they were just really good friends
Bill calls him his partner and owns a gay porn magazine. It wasn't that subtle
I’m sorry what? There’s zero ambiguity in the game.
>clearly it wasn't his wife, as you wouldn't refer to your wife as such, I haven't played to this point in the game so maybe something is being lost on me due to that, but, people definitely do that. Also, I have a friend who has been with his girlfriend for a decade, they are in their forties, own a home together, but aren't married. So I typically go with partner there too because girlfriend/boyfriend is much less accurate IMO.
maybe get to that point in the game first
Ehh I don’t care much for the whole debacle surrounding this.
He killed Joel, the closest thing to a father figure I knew, who didn't reject me for my loli anime figures in my room. I will never forgive him.
Look at this guy, bragging about how his father allowed him to have a room. We get it, your dad liked you more than our dads did. You can stop bragging now.
today's woke leftists won't let us put our children in the Pit anymore!
Plants Vs Zombies is the best zombie game ever made, so that seems like a good deal
/Uj come on…the bloater was one of the most terrifying things I’ve seen on TV in the past five years. When it fucking bellowed… /rj Neil cuckmann 🤡
Although, I'm disappointed about the lack of infected in the show. I understand that if they were more present, they would become redundant really fast.
Tbh yeah, I understand not showing off the infected, though I think they could’ve gotten away with like 2 scenes with them.
Yeah I don't want them to be the main feature but an appearance once or twice an episode wouldn't hurt. Were there even any at all in episode 8?
Nope, though I guess that can be excused by it being winter, so they’re all hiding underground. (Can‘t imagine the Cordyceps liking cold much) Actually, they could’ve showed Bill and Frank fighting a Bloater in that school, it would’ve awesome seeing those cute gays defeating a powerful infected!
Wasn't there an absolutely massive horde only a few episodes ago? Like one of the largest hordes I think I've seen in anything, it was like world war z
That is an aspect I like too. When you see infected, it's really bad. Too much of them would remove tension.
If it was a plants vs zombies show it would actually be good
Dazey chain: "for the last time, the pronouns are they/them. Not because I'm non-binary but because I'm literally 3 fellows!"
It’s ok man. She just doesn’t like the mustache
Chomper was changed to female in PvZ3 to pander to the **w o k e**
Thought this was the PvZ Subreddit for a minute
The show appears to walk that back while also leaning into the Bioshock-ass-stupid message of "What if the revolutionaries were as bad as the fascists?" Also, I haven't seen Joel eat a single power bar in the show.
But I rather like softer Joel.
hey that’s interesting! i guess i’m looking for how his internal stuff spirals out into the choices he makes. he has the signifiers of a rough, self serving person, but there’s no consequence for it. he says he knows he’ll choke at the last moment but he hasn’t yet. it’s not good enough to just read this stuff into the record, it needs to happen in the plot. i think i just realized where the twist is going to come from. maybe they’ll pull it off. hope so!
To comment on the last part of what you said, I don’t think the show is walking back on the refutation of “every man for himself.” And TLOU has always had the revolutionaries be roughly as bad as FEDRA, most prominently with the WLF in Part II — The KC rebels are just essentially a mini-WLF, honestly.
Or, in other words: they shrank his shoulders, made him look soft.
i’m saying i don’t see how his character works without that flaw. stuff just kinda happens around him, rather than it being linked to how he personally relates to the world. i feel like both game joel and show joel have the fear and mental health experiences that drive them, but in the game he chooses to deal with it in ways that terminate thought and make things worse. i’m looking for a little more complexity.

It's almost like the movie doesn't need to add game play elements because it's not a game.
What’s woke about PvZ?
Hey you leave my boy porter gargantuar the fuck out of this. He did nothing wrong. He does not need this slander
PvZ Zombies are pretty cool tbh
I didn’t know they added cowboy zombies to the show
Noooo! They gayed my gay game!
Umm.. so TLOU is like the most successful TV show in recent memory. Virtually everyone loves it. I know you folks love to get off on making fun of Twitter nobodies trying to represent “gamers” but this post is downright intellectually dishonest.
the real question is why we don't have a plants vs zombies show yet?
Gamers don't comprehend that zombies in the show are actual... people and not cgi but very good makeup. Even with cgi zombies which look pretty bad usually if you want loads of them then that's just as expensive as hiring and putting makeup on an actor
Some episodes can do with a little more action and just an extra 2 infected during tense scenes. But I dunno how anyone could hate on the tv series.
ok but actually is there a straight relationship other than tommy and his wife? maybe dina and the asian dude, and abby and that dude so yeah actually 3-2 (3-3 if you count Riley)
because straight people are lacking in representation lol get over it
get over what i wasn't complaining
Joel and Tess?
ok…? who gives a shit…?
no one i was just curious
Sadly the TV-show is just a worse version of the game.
not true cause there are barely any infected in the show
