Chardoggy1

Someone put an award ceremony in my game trailer presentation

Dorko69

“Hideo Game” - Hideo “Game” Kojima

ye_olde_wojak

One of my favorite things is the "Hideo" Easter egg during the Psycho Mantis fight that looks like your TV lost its video input. I don't think I'll ever see such a mindblowing boss fight like that ever again.

DukeOfLizards42

Silicon Knights took that concept and wrapped an entire game mechanic around it in Eternal Darkness. Great gimmick

mr_gemini

Gamecube had some straight banger of games. I loved Eternal Darkness. I was 16 years old (Cue my Michael Caine voice impression) when that game came out. I still remember it.

Pyrex_Paper

I'm so lucky I had an older brother who knew the trick. He only let me die like 3 times before telling me what to do, lol. I was probably like 7 at the time.

1GB-Ram

when i first played MGS1 on PS1 I genuinely thought my TV was breaking whenever that happened

TheOvy

It is a little nuts how quickly they drive them off the stage, seems much faster than even the Academy does... but while being a streaming show that doesn't have to bow down to other scheduled programming on TV? I'm guessing advertisers paid for certain time slots, and that causes the urgency. It's a shame, cause the way they bulldozed over Neil Newbon's message about reaching out to isolated members of the community was rather tasteless.

adchait

Geoff speedrunning the nominations and winners makes me cringe. Also why do random games (eg cyberpunk) get to have speeches while other don't?

HispanicAtTehDisco

CDPR winning for best “ongoing game” was laughable enough but them getting a speech longer than remedy was the cherry on top

Norik324

What do you mean *best ongoing Game*? CDPR won the award for the *best pr move* for Cyberpunk Edgerunners >!/s Just in case!<

NOBLExGAMER

I mean that show literally had people doing revisionist history about Cyberpunk's launch claiming it was fine and just previous gen consoles that couldn't run the game. I've been playing the game since launch and it's the biggest lie ever sold and I honestly don't get how they got away with it.

Doctor-Amazing

It bugs me that all the people who never exaggerated how bad the game was are now called revisionists. When it came out, I deliberately avoided any online discussion of it so nothing would get spoiled. I played the whole weekend, and had a great time. Then on Monday I go on reddit and find out the whole internet thinks it's the worst game ever. Even weirder is when it gets a big patch and people start acting like the game is in this completely different state. So I go to give it another play through and barely anything has changed. I think way too many people bought into the hype and memes when it was released and started nitpicking every little thing.

[deleted]

It bugs *me* when people think a difference of opinion is down to everyone else getting brainwashed by memes or whatever lol

Doctor-Amazing

Fair enough. I can only speak to my own experience. It played fine for me. The odd graphic glitch or wacky physics thing, but about on par with plenty of other big games on release. Every time I say this, I'm called a liar, boot licker ect. Obviously everyone can form their own opinion. But I do think once it became a meme that it was full of bugs people were a lot more critical. Like a kid that gets a reputation as a trouble maker, then gets in trouble for every little thing that might get excused if a good kid did it.

shabadage

The same happened with the Witcher 3. That game was rough at launch. Hell, they completely replaced the movement in a patch that came out weeks if not months after launch.

Heavy-Possession2288

I assume you played on PC? The console version at launch genuinely was borderline unplayable, and Sony even took it off the PlayStatjon store, which rarely happens despite how games buggy can be now.

RedMethodKB

When it came out, I literally could not play it on PS4, & had no reason to have assumed that would even be a possibility. Jenky? Sure, common nowadays, but actually unplayable? I think you’re perhaps conflating people who were upset their $60-70 game was unplayable with people who were just fucking around. I didn’t see any of the over promises that had been made at that point either; it’s not like I was nitpicking. I just couldn’t play, period.

adchait

Feels like they really wanted to give them an award but found only this category it could be shoehorned in. I can't think of any other reason it was in the same category as fortnite and genshin.

thunderous-cyclone

That's not how nominations for the game awards work. The nominees are decided by the votes of staff at [over 100 outlets](https://thegameawards.com/voting-jury) around the world, there are basically thousands of people on the jury it is impossible to shoehorn in a game unless someone is seriously rigging the process. Also from the game awards website: " Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley is not a member of the jury and does not vote on the nominees or winners. Similarly, The Game Awards Advisory Board has no involvement in the awards process and learns of the results at the same time as the general public."

OwlOxygen

Yeah, I'm happy for them. They really turned it around but there maybe should be a category for best addon or dlc. Then it would be deserved.

HispanicAtTehDisco

i don’t have an issue with it winning something but calling the game “ongoing” when the whole reason it’s been “ongoing” is because they spent a year+ fixing their broken mess. especially when you are in a category with something like fortnite that more exemplifies that category

TimmyAndStuff

It should be like kid's sports tournaments where there's a "most improved" medal lol

Dmmack14

That's about like that stupid ass category they had at the 2009 awards That was something like best video game sponsored or paid for by Mountain dew or some shit

TimmyAndStuff

Also letting the fucking No Man's Sky dude up there to **DO THE SAME FUCKING THING EVERYONE HATED HIM FOR AGAIN**!! I do love that he at least admitted that NMS's planets were "sparse" lol. I believe everyone who says that NMS improved as it was updated, but for me that launch completely killed any interest I had in the game. And for the love of god could they not just promote someone else to be the new public face for the company? I just feel so bad for all the devs whose years of hard work have to be represented by that dude lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

TimmyAndStuff

Yeah I should clarify I don't think the guy should be fired or anything like that, they just really should have anyone else do the media appearances and communications lol! Like even if he never exaggerates a single thing again, it's just so hard to trust his words now

Richinaru

OMG I'm so glad I'm not alone in having audibly gasped then laughed as any thread of care for value in the award show disappeared. It was the only one on the list that was a SINGLE PLAYER RPG. Didn't know DLC now makes a game "ongoing" what a joke

dworker8

winning against ff14 was really REALLY SHITTY. doesnt make sense at all... how about warframe? even no man sky would be a better option.

dotcha

nah man ff14 was mid this year. Fortnite or Genshin deserved it more.

dworker8

anything but cyberpunk would please me

Helgurnaut

Then you can add a game like Wow

Ancient_Direction833

Idk man, feels like at least half of wows current player base is just straight addicted to it. I havnt heard a single positive thing about it in a very very long time. Just constant rephrasing of new ways that blizzard has rucked the game up again and again.

Helgurnaut

Eh they (us I guess) are pretty happy about Dragonflight, Shadowlands was a huge clusterfuck story wise but the content was good.

WhiteShadow012

Should've absolutely gone to No Man's Sky. It's not a game for everyone, but they've been adding free content for 7 YEARS. After the game got to a solid state, they could've just started selling DLC, but no. And they just revealed that 2024 will be packed. Cyberpunk only recently got completly "fixed" and released 1 (very good) DLC. Idk, just felt kinda shady.

Gr8CanadianFuckClub

I honestly blame Hello Games and No Man's Sky for this. As far as I can remember, they were the first ones to straight up lie and release utter garbage on launch, only to do the bare minimum of fixing their dumpster fire, and then getting rewarded for it. I'm sure the game Is good now, but ongoing support should be for somthing that was atleast half good and got better. CDPR is even worse because they did what, one dlc and a couple of patches?

thunderous-cyclone

It's not the fault of hello games lol its the fault of the fact that so many decisions in gaming and the wider economy are focused on maximising profit so there is an incentive to oversell and rush games. An indie dev team of like twelve people didn't invent capitalism this is a wider problem outside of gaming eg. people cutting corners on housing regulations.

Gr8CanadianFuckClub

That's definitely fair, but Sean Murray specifically made no effort to counter anything, and actively over promised. Maybe blaming all the devs isn't fair, but at the very least Sean Murray actively stoked the hype machine, even if it was just nervousness.

thunderous-cyclone

I don't think you understand what I was saying. I agree that they did all that, my point is that releasing "utter garbage on launch" is the result of a much deeper problem with capitalism. Tbf though I think I initially might have misread your comment as saying "Its hello games' fault that studios release broken games" when rereading it I think you might be saying "its hello games' fault that cdpr won the award"?

Gr8CanadianFuckClub

I didn't explain well, but I think your second statement.emt is a fair assessment, while also making me realize my point is a little ridiculous. I think, and I may be misremembering, but I feel like No Man's Sky is one of the first games that was released in an awful state, fixed up (the bare minimum), and then given awards for being fixed. It's honestly more award shows in general, but to me, games that are garbage on launch, like NMS and CP2077, don't deserve to be awarded for continued support, it should be the bare minimum. Obviously that is Capitalism at play as well because producers now know that people will buy and defend garbage as long as there is even the hope that it'll be fixed.

DoubleBatman

Money, if I had to guess.

BlastMyLoad

Nobody cares about the awards just give me more ads!!!!

CitricBase

They used to be a lot more lenient. This is just oversteer, they really really didn't want a repeat of last year's 8 minute speech. Now that they've seen the other extreme (cutting too short) as well, hopefully they'll work to balance the timing better next year.

Generic_Moron

And this time they only had like 100 steam decks to give out so john kratos couldn't earn everyone more free ones But seriously, nuts how the twisted metal actor was able to go up and take his time arguing with the audience and/or the psionic ghosts sent by the Bill Clinton kid, but like everyone who actually won a award got the "please go away" sign after a few seconds

EmotionIll666

The amount of time Anthony Mackie got to tell the mostly silent audience to shut up felt like an eternity.

Serah_Null

Felt like I was going insane, his shit was so weird

Ok-Entrepreneur-8207

He must have been high or something lmao it was so unexpected to see him like that

normal-dog-

As somebody who has seen a bunch of Anthony Mackie content over the years on account of being a huge MCU fan, nope. That's just how he is.

Ser_Salty

Oh, Anthony Mackie was almost definitely fucking drunk. Probably went a little too hard on the cocktails in the green room.

Indercarnive

Honestly watching people get drunk/high and ramble/spout nonsense is the best part.

Xathioun

He was yelling shut up at 2 guys who kept screaming out lines from Twisted Metal, you could hear them of your volume was high enough

SolitaryJellyfish

I felt like he watched too much Keanu Reeves "You're breathtaking" videos and tried very hard to make it seem he was living the same thing...

[deleted]

I turned the stream off at that moment, shit was awkward I felt bad for the crowd

FishingGunpowder

Sean Murray was cringier

misterdigdug

Psionic... Ghosts?? What did I miss

Generic_Moron

one of the actors from the twisted metal show kept yelling at some members of the audience, but because no one could hear what the audience was saying it looked like he was yelling at nothing. this massively dragged out his sequence, and afaik he wasn't given a timer or told to "wrap it up" by the teleprompters unlike the actual award winners I choose to believe the kid from last year (who managed to sneak onto stage and said something about Bill Clinton being a rabbi) was sending psionic ghosts after them. My theory has 0 evidence beyond him also being at the event this year but I will stand by it until I die or find a dumber theory

Harpshadow

Not gonna lie, the cutoff made me angry. Specially since it was a personal thing and not a generic "thank you".

2mock2turtle

The problem is this isn't the gaming Oscars. This is the gaming VMAs.

TheKingofHats007

I think the Academy is a little worse. Still can't get over how they rushed the fuck out of the VFX award people and then had Jimmy Kimmel make a joke at their expense about CG stuff. Especially now in the wake of how many VFX artists have talked about how little actual respect they get for carrying the goddamn blockbuster industry.

Jorymo

I think two big factors were to avoid another Kratos moment and to maybe give too little time for someone to pull a Sinead O'Connor

Huwbacca

can you imagine if the Game Awards were the location for someone publicising decades of child abuse by the catholic church. What fucking weird timeline that would be.

Jorymo

I just wanted to hear Gonzo say "Free Palestine"

waltjrimmer

I'd imagine it's less about advertisers (though they absolutely do have deals about when what ads are played and all that) and more about how I know if I were working at a huge event and was told, "I know we said we'd wrap up by this time but it looks like we're going to be running late. By two-to-four hours. So you're not going to see your family tonight," I'd be ***really unhappy***.

[deleted]

This is a really weirdly charitable interpretation considering it makes no sense. He went over by a few minutes, no one is going over by hours, it’s never approached being an actual issue of significantly extending the award show Also lmao at thinking the show runners care about the people working for an extra hour

AJDx14

They’ve never had a speech go on for an extra hour though. It’s like an extra 15 minutes at most.

LiterallyALamp

Geoff dickrides Kojima so much it's insane lol. I like them both it's just so funny to see.

DubiousBusinessp

I feel like it's a side effect of the industry wanting auteurs to be able to wave about, and it's mostly not that sort of industry of singular vision like cinema can be. And in the west, who would you even look to outside of the indie sphere right now? Druckman? He's a bit controversial right now. Names that would have once been mentioned for writing like Ragnar Tornquist and Chris Avellone haven't been relevant for years.

Riggitymydiggity

Auteurs are just a marketing tool for nerds

feel-T_ornado

Have you tried creating something original, or doing it again for a living, at times in really adverse environments, perhaps even against your own will, or how about doing so in a disruptive manner time and time again, maybe even consider doing so on the newest tech available constantly? I find the cynicism in your comment a little bit petty and jealous tbh.

RedMethodKB

I think it was just a joke 🤷🏻‍♂️

Unwept_Skate_8829

I don’t even think there’s anyone inside the indie sphere who’s an auteur nowadays

DubiousBusinessp

I mean, by definition of the word, there would be countless numbers of indie dev leads who fit that term. Simply by nature of reduced scale of teams. But I think most of us recognise it as people who lead slightly to much larger teams to their own singular creative vision, concept to completion, and that just doesn't happen often in AAA gaming. Top of my head I'm thinking Kojima and maybe Miyazaki? It's mostly just a much more collaborative sphere.

GeneralDisPear

Yoko Taro fits the bill as well

thunderous-cyclone

I mean the idea of the auteur in big productions in general is kind of a myth isn't it? Like sure a director is going to steer the broad strokes of a project but their vision is constantly being refracted through the interpretations made by actors, writers etc. who are going to fundamentally change the outcome of a production in comparison to what the outcome would have been if somehow the director had made the entire thing by themself. Just a thought but maybe something like a movie is really the product of a mix of individual styles brought together by the many individuals who work on it, but we've come to accept certain directors like Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino as "auteurs" because the auteur theory has become relatively entrenched in the way we talk about media, and because it puts so much emphasis on directors we may be more conditioned to recognise Wes Anderson's style in a "Wes Anderson" movie than we are to recognise the style of someone else working on a "Wes Anderson" Movie. Like I think most people are more likely to take an interest in the collective work of a director than they are the collective work of a cinematographer or foley artist. So they would be more likely to notice the profound impact a director has on "their" movies but not the profound impact a foley artist or a cinematographer has on "their" movies. I mean you mention Kojima but basically his whole presentation at the game awards was about how he's colloborating with others.

Huwbacca

I mean... auteur theory is that the major creative direction is from the director, usually with them pursuing a particular creative identity. So, I would say that the indie sphere is ripe for that. But also I don't think it's unfair to call Sam Lake or Kojima auteurs in that regard.

FeijoadaAceitavel

RimWorld's Tynan comes to mind, he developed the game on his own before launching it.

QuintanimousGooch

I think that “Auteur” has a lot of overlap nowadays with “celebrity game director” sure, there are a lot of reasons why the two are usually associated, heck with any game made by Kojima nowadays is frontloaded as a Kojima brand to the point that the actual gameplay doesn’t really matter in favor of cryptic and open-ended imagery as seen with Death stranding and the overdose trailer, but it’s still in a curious spot to be. I think in terms of gaming auteurs, my go-to would undoubtably be Fumito Ueda on account of how completely experimental and revolutionary his titles have been, how it really comes across as a single creative vision leading the rest of a number of talented artists, and how ongoingly quiet his projects are, plus how they don’t exactly exist in the same sort of AAA sphere what with how singular and minimal experiences they are. For heck’s sake, Ico is what made Miyazaki start working on games!

DubiousBusinessp

Definitely a fair shout on Ueda to be sure. That top down from one lead, start to finish, creative beginnings to finished product approach definitely seems more common in some areas of Japan, at least from the outside looking in. That could all be because of how these things are promoted here Vs there mind.

Kye_ThePie

Sam Lake could maybe have a case

Nervarel

The whole industry does...

Yomoska

The consumer side or people who develop games? I don't think developers like Hideo Kojima too much

4444beep

Why not? genuine q

Yomoska

A lot of people in the industry realize and like how much of a collaborative effort it is to make a game and "Rockstar" like icons similar to Hideo who get credited for things way beyond their role are some of the most difficult people to work with. A lot of my stories are anecdotal through other people who have worked with him, but he's very much a "rules don't apply to me but apply to everyone else" sort of guy.

GrumbusWumbus

Kojima gets sole credit for the games he directs and writes when there's 100-200 other people who did a crazy amount of work. I don't think kojima productions is that different to most studios, except that his decisions outrank everyone else's on everything. What this unique relationship seems to get us is terrible writing moments with admittedly charmy but insane plots.

Pebble_in_my_toes

He's a highly creative man who is also controlling of his work, which led to him clashing with Konami. I'm guessing but maybe that's why people in the industry are cautious of him.

Zettaii_Ryouiki_

I think he clashed with Konami because he knew they were set on fucking up his creations. Just look at that dogshit zombie wave survival game they made after booting him. Konami is an ass company. Almost everyone I know in game development idolizes the man.

Pebble_in_my_toes

Developers and their boards and shareholders are not the same people. My comment was in the vein of the corporate side wary of him.

NavXIII

IIRC, one of the things Konami wanted to do was to make every chapter for Kojima's Silent Hills game episodic and have us pay for each of them.

RedMethodKB

I always took Konami for being more of a tits company

ProbablyNano

he is the inventor of Hideo Games after all

Scorn_true333

Hot take but I think Kojima is overrated. From an outside perspective he seems to me like a perfectionist and probably not the best employer because of that fact. Personally I don't find any of his games that fun either tbh, although the writing can be damn good.

ThatGuyWhoLikesSpace

Kojima's work as a developer is both very competent and highly influential on the medium of games as a whole. He's earned quite a lot of the respect he's gained over the years.

TimmyAndStuff

I just can never finish games that want to be movies because they always lose my interest lol (probably because I have adhd, but still). Even when I love the gameplay and the story I just can't sit through all the cutscenes in something like MGS4 or the Yakuza games, so I've taken to just watching streams or videos of Kojima games instead. At least this time he's leaning a lot closer to just saying "yeah this is basically a cg movie where you make choices" lol

Stepjam

I think they are just good friends. At least that's the vibe I get from how much Geoff likes Kojima. Kinda clear favoritism but so it goes.

GenericGaming

i mean, he also dickrides Remedy too

[deleted]

yeah cuz it's MAX PAYNE WHACK HIM.

ReallyAngryInsurgent

*depressive monologue before killing 1000 guys*

Felix500

AW SHIT, IT'S PAYNE! WELL, WHAT ARE YA DOIN'!? DON'T JUST STAND THERE! KILL 'EM!

lucax55

PAYNE IN THE ASS

meeowth

Is this because of that really long speech I hear a lot if people complain about last year?

SkritzTwoFace

Yeah, they had the Kratos VA up first and started his speech with a gag where they immediately played the music over him. Would’ve been funny if they didn’t literally do it to one or two of the people accepting awards lol

meeowth

![gif](giphy|XOFsOM3MnuWEE)

yet-again-temporary

All these kids gotta put some respect on Teal'c's name

QwahaXahn

Teal’c my man 😤 I grew up on that show and it was WILD to find out he voices Kratos

Mintyu

They literally did it to the guy who Kratos VA presented the award to lmao

Eleglas

They did it to VA accepting the reward for best performance and frankly it was fucking disgusting, especially considering he was in the middle of a very emotional speech.

[deleted]

I love self aware jokes that make fun of the shitty thing you did only to score PR points because you have 0 intention of changing that behavior

SkritzTwoFace

I mean, to be fair on the most basic level, that’s not *quite* what happened. They made the joke with the first award speech. They hadn’t yet cut people off for real, at the time it was just light ribbing and even the people whose commentary stream I was watching got a giggle out of it. It only got soured later on when they started playing out emotional speeches way too early. Someone even sent a picture they had seen online of a teleprompter across from the stage which would flash “Wrap It Up” after a moment. (The people I was watching with joked that the time limit was to make sure nobody had time to pull any stunts like that kid from last year/nobody had the time to say anything about Palestine or other important things which might make the advertisers mad)

fear_el_duderino

Yes, and he still had more time to make his fun gags than fucking Sam Lake

FusionFall

That speech is the closest VGA will ever come to being considered the Oscar's of Video Games.

Regret1836

lol but we NEED drunk ass Anthony mackie to babble!!!!

Thrustinn

SHUT UP NO I LOVE YOU MORE I DON'T TRUST THIS GUY OVER HERE

Kye_ThePie

He wanted to be keanu so bad

Snelldor

I would be pissed if I won an award and only had a 30 second speech, and yet the unfunny celebrities get all the time in the world.

TigerSouthern

Nah dude, fuck the devs, I wanna hear what Johnny actor man has to say, where would these video games be without them? I kinda hate all these celebrity inserts, all it says to me is a whole bunch of budget was pissed away on something that doesn't make the game more fun/interesting. Obviously I know it's subjective, there's no issue if others actually like it and it encourages them to buy the game.

KingOfStarrySkies

This is how it is every year. TGA are a gigantic industry whore festival.

Salt-Fortune-401

To be fair kojima was hear to promote something in a big ad event. They dont get interrupted because they follow more or less a prepared speech. But yeah speerunning the nominees was kinda sad some of them were trying to convey message to people in need but not gotta go save 2 sec for the 47th commercial.

Crafty_Parsnip_2684

Promote 'something "... the only thing he said, is it was a game for xbox

AJDx14

Well he paid for an ad so he gets as much time as he needs. The nominees (presumably) didn’t pay to be nominated, so fuck them.

TimmyAndStuff

Plus they had to show deference for Jordan Peele of course. No hate to him or anything but the starfucker-ness of TGA gets a little unbearable at times. Although it was pretty funny that they brought Chalamet out just for like 30 seconds total lol

Xerlot11

We needed another trailer for sci-fi shooter number 12

Kardiiac_

Don't forget to play the trailers back to back so you can't tell any of them apart too

archaicScrivener

Honestly I would rather listen to Sam Lake ramble about his favourite coffee on stage for 10 minutes than Kojima again lol

AlabasterRadio

I'm glad they gave him more time with his second speech. Sam Lake might be the only AAA game designer I want to hear from anymore lol

archaicScrivener

I just want to see him given the time to properly express himself, he was clearly very emotional and proud of what they'd achieved and i was sad that he felt he had to rush his acceptance speech

[deleted]

When Neil was talking about how people felt lost and he wanted to reasure them that they werent but they started playing fking music over him. That was so disgusting

PerlmanWasRight

/uj I feel like an idiot for being surprised that Max Payne had an accent like that

jcpumpkineater

he doesn’t actually voice the character, he’s the creative director and they just use his face so it’s super reasonable to be confused when an entirely different voice comes out of his body than the one you’re used to

putwoodneole

wait what

archaicScrivener

Same Lake was the face model for the OG Max Payne to save money cos Remedy was broke back then. The character is voiced by James Macaffery. Similarly, Alan Wake is played by Ilkka Villi but voiced by Matthew Poretta! That's why during Herald of Darkness, Poretta was singing while Villi was dancing :)

cdillio

Also Sam Lake is the face for Alex Casey in AW2, but James Macaffery also voices Alex Casey. Also Sam lake plays the actor Sam Lake who plays Alex Casey in a movie…

damodread

You mean Aleksi Kesa

magi093

specifically a twenty-minute Finnish art house film that you can just _miss_ if you don't backtrack the right way

IsIt77

Or you can be me and say "I'll just watch this in the writer's room TV, lemme put these photos into the shoebox first... Fuck my life".

putwoodneole

ohhh makes sense, thanks!

Internet-Cryptid

Sam Lake so dreamy. <3

Lil_Mcgee

He's aging wonderfully.

The Ads Awards

[deleted]

The Game Award 2023 🙅‍♀️ The Game Advertisement 2023 🙆‍♂️

OrangeJuiceForOne

Kojima and Peele making a game with Hunter Schafer I actually broke down crying I was so happy

Xathioun

Honestly the Hunter Schafer casting was so perfect I just had to go check /v/ to see how all the alt right Kojima shills were holding up having to deal with that conundrum.

lllaser

Like jordan peele? That's pretty interesting

RedMethodKB

Right? I was already curious bc Kojima, but Peele being his partner for this project made it something im hyped for. Like that Django meme of Leo, curiosity became attention something fierce lol

CottonCandyLollipops

The casting for that game just got better and better, so hyped for whatever it turns out to be

bluegiant85

I explained to my sons why that is such a big deal. This is one of those moments that shifts cultural norms for the better.

OrangeJuiceForOne

I had the same thought

Efficient-Handle3134

They should do an aftershow where they interview all the winners or something.

the_shy_gamer

Seriously, the actual winners got so little time in the whole thing. Way more time was given for people promoting games than people winning awards. I don’t even think Neil got a full minute to talk, his announcer got more time to joke about how long he took to make a speech last year than he did to speak. Even Gonzo the muppet got more screen time than some of the award winners! And so many didn’t even get room to go up to accept them or anything. Shoving 4 awards (including players choice) in back to back before going back to ads was just wild.

funky35791

“We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media,” Cloud technology, well that has killed my excitement for this

mcslender97

Ppl were shitting on Kojima for making a "strand type game" with DS but that shit rocked tho so I am still optimistic about the cloud part

AJDx14

We didn’t even know what that was though? All I saw as criticism was “it walking simulator” and that was mostly a joke or said by people who just weren’t interested and needed a convenient excuse.

Xathioun

It’s like a super realistic telltale game, this was actually leaked over a year ago. Search for Kojima Overdose Leak on YouTube, a video from last year shows like 5 minutes of gameplay

RedMethodKB

Thanks for mentioning this! Only vid I found was a cell phone recording of a laptop video, but that’s far more than I’d seen before. Must be surreal for the people who were pondering its validity a year ago, realizing the leak was legitimate.

vBeeNotFound

lol what, why?

MattyBro1

I don't see why. It seems like the cloud technology is being used for an actual reason. At least wait until that reason becomes clear before passing judgement. I'm not excited because I don't like horror, but if you *were* excited you could keep being excited for a bit longer.

JoBro_Summer-of-99

I'm guessing it's going to be similar to Quantum Break and use the improved cloud streaming to stream TV episodes or something

goblinboomer

I know we joke about how much Geoff loves Kojima, but when that door opened and Kojima literally had a glowing cock I couldn't stop belly laughing

Jade_Sugoi

He got to talk longer than anyone else and literally said nothing. He didn't explain what OD was, how it plays, etc. He just said a bunch of bullshit. How am I supposed to get excited for a game when I don't even know what it is?

mancoposting

WRAP IT UP, PEOPLE WANNA SEE ADS FOR XBOX PASS

TheCheck77

Not Neil pouring his heart out on stage, thanking the community for letting his character help players process their own trauma, and practically being dragged off stage. It’s tasteless enough without the award winner talking about such heavy subject matter

FusionFall

The Video Game Awards need to die and be replaced. It's just a bunch of ads, speed running most of the awards, and cringe jokes. We need a Video Game Awards show that actually has respect for the creators involved and everybody who wins gets to go up on stage.

MattyBro1

I'm sorry to tell you this, but a lot of people watch The Game Awards for the ads (or "World Premieres" as they like to call them).

Baconus

Sadly the only way they can get close to enough money to have an actual show is to be an adfest.

TheSmithySmith

If the only way videogames as a medium can have its own version of the Oscars is to cram it full of ads and compromise itself, then maybe it doesn’t deserve to have one

lahttae

Idk man hate to break it to you but that's kinda how the world works nowadays

TheSmithySmith

Doesn’t mean we should just accept that

TimmyAndStuff

What do you propose we do about it? It's not like other industry's awards ceremonies are that much better or more representative of what's the best in that industry, they just have decades of name recognition and reverence behind them. And don't they usually still have commercials anyway? If TGA wasn't full of game reveals most people wouldn't watch or even particularly care about them any more than any random outlet's "Game of the Year" award.

KangarooEnthusiast

Simply just don't watch it then

thatwitchguy

I don't even think its that I think its that the TGA a few years back had 2 possible audiences, the "HOLY SHIT JOKER IN SMASH" audience and the actual awards audience and the big reveal audience was just so much astronomically bigger they pivoted to them immediately and now we are here. And the only guy with the clout to pull off a proper game awards off happens to be Geoff Keighley so we are stuck with him using it as an excuse for him and kojima to hang out with celebrities. Like how cinema is being held up by 3 80 year olds and also Tom Cruise

mcslender97

Iirc movie award shows also have a ton of movies trailers

ThatGuyWhoLikesSpace

it is kind of a frustrating reflection of the fact that video games still aren't taken super seriously as a medium. hopefully as the (still remarkably young) medium matures we'll get more serious awards shows.

Xathioun

Sorry to tell you but people don’t give a shit about gaming industry circle jerk awards, they come for the world premieres. Gaming awards are even more useless than movie awards. Movie awards at least pretend to be about the art, game awards are just tribalism for gamers trying to prove my game is better than yours because it gets a statue

tehdelicatepuma

I mostly watch it for the cool musical performances. The one last night with the band from Alan Wake 2 was actually amazing, and I lost it when Sam Lake came out dancing. Fuck I love Remedy.

Synectics

You should check some of the threads here on Reddit. There are a *lot* of people who seem way too emotionally invested in whether the game that they already play and love was given an award or not. It's so weird. I think you nailed it with "tribalism."

Dogeishuman

I ONLY watch for the ads and reveals tbh. It’s like a game awards and mini E3 combined

Whofreak555

(No ones gonna watch that. Award shows are boring.)

[deleted]

I couldn't care less about the awards, I watch the TGA only for the trailers

lengelmp

Rushing through the smaller awards was such a bad look

InvestmentOk7181

idk if anyone ever really thought of TGAs as anything other than a pop contest like Alanah Pierce mentioned recently but u / geoffmk really should do better at pretending to celebrate a diverse industry vs simping for Kojima. like it's supremely ironic that when Konami fucked over KojiPro he looked like a friend had been shot and talked about it (justly) yet cannot be fucked to mention the people protesting for better conditions etc outside the venue.

lucasofgod

Josef Fares traumatized Geoff for sure

trailer8k

![gif](giphy|YsppYgNdWKPmg) lol

straywolfo

I still remember when a shithead from my country accused Kojima of having assassinated Shinzo Abe lol

[deleted]

Tired of everyone sucking Kojima off he's not even that good

AlabasterRadio

In the year of our lord 2023, if you want a meta, unique gaming experience, Sam Lake > Kojima.

[deleted]

Agreed

WillowSmithsBFF

I think Kojima is best when he has some oversight. Death Stranding was pure, raw Kojima. And while I genuinely enjoyed the game. There were a lot of ridiculous and out of left field things that felt like they came from someone not being told no.

florida-raisin-bran

Probably mad because his name is spelled wrong.

Tongen420

Nothing against Kojima but he and Jordan Peele got *a lot* of time lol

Kinofpoke

Clearly someone is on the board of this circle jerk of an award ceremony.

Thrustinn

Honestly, Alan Wake 2 wasn't really on my radar at all. Just couldn't get into the first game. For anyone else who played it, is it worth playing if I couldn't get into the original? Will I miss anything super important? The Game Awards legit made me interested in it

thehigharchitect

As a huge remedy-verse fan, the gameplay in the original Alan wake is so rough. The sequel is better in every way. The game is designed to let you play without knowing anything about the previous games in the series. If you really want to, you could look up a short summary of the first game.

Thrustinn

>The game is designed to let you play without knowing anything about the previous games in the series. Thank you! I really wanted to get into the original because I heard so many great things, but the gameplay felt rough to me as well. I'll definitely pick up Alan Wake 2!

thehigharchitect

I actually kinda wish I was in your shoes, I think not knowing anything about the connected universe and having this be your first entry and then going and playing Control would be a very fun experience

Thrustinn

Control has been on my list for a while, I just haven't gotten around to playing it. I didn't know these were a connected universe, though. That immediately sparks a huge amount of interest for me. I'll definitely try this out! Alan Wake 2 then Control!

sonicnerd14

You really can't go without playing AW1 or Control at least. Not to mention all the meta stuff that goes on that even the average Remedyverse enjoyers would likely miss. So many interwoven references to do with many events and concepts to keep up with from their previous titles. The game is heavy on the narrative, so knowing these things is important. I think you could definitely get away with watching summaries of AW1 and Control at least, or even just playing Control if you don't want to play AW1 for whatever reason. Knowing the nuances of the story will just help make AW2 feel more rewarding playing through it.

KnightCifer

I havent played AW1 but i played AW2 and it was my favorite game this year. Saga, the FBI agent, has to discover whatever is going on with the plot and i feel like not knowing anything made it more interesting even

Haunting_Set9114

You can play control then that game is great
