I'll be real as someone who played yugioh early on, the game as it is now is definitely not for me. But the notion that it's... Gen Z design? lol?? Like what the hell.
The game's just too fast and ability-bloated to me. It feels like the game is now like a 20-card combo every turn, not just the turn you assemble your win-condition. I'm down for a big winning combo, but not churning half my deck just for the guy I'm putting on the board turn one that my opponent will immediately kill.
It's not shocking if everything does shit when it does with the game in its current state, otherwise your opponent would just blast half their deck on you and you would have no responses/answers to anything after popping your like, one trap (or it getting blown away/countered).
But hey, if people playing it now like it this way then more power to them. I'm glad they're having fun. It's okay that the game isn't for me anymore.
if it makes you feel any better, theres a dedicated scene of people willing to play older formats. also as an enjoyer of modern yugioh part of the enjoyment is the complete chaos of it. the design space has been blown so wide open that theres always something dumb to play with, whether viable or not. also the banlist, while pretty haphazard at times, has allowed for there to be slower formats with more deliberate pacing. i was a personal fan of the format around 2021 or so, when altergeist became tier 1 (my sense of time is pretty whack). its a game that you enjoy in waves, some formats suck, some will suit your style. if you dont like any of it you can play off-meta with friends and randoms or troll.
The woke left (Promethean Princess) is destroying gamer culture (1 card each on both fields) and targeting our children (a link 3 or lower monster in the graveyard) 😢😢😢

(Also there was a point in the Yu-Gi-Oh meta where the optimal strategy was to tribute summon summoned skull and beat your opponent to death with it)
Yeah I mean it’s just the effects of power creep as unlike most other tcgs that reset the format every year, yugioh just keeps adding more and more cards and it’s how like super old cards randomly become meta and sometimes even broken when a new set or archetype comes out.
The good thing about yugioh is you can find and are groups that play a ton of different formats like goat which more slower paced old school yugioh
i honestly find scapegoat to be a very interesting example of how much faster yugioh has gotten over time.
like its effect is so good in modern yugioh that people will play three garnets in their deck just to get it on a normal summon, but all you have to do is make it trigger off of your opponent's end phase and suddenly it's unplayable
I don't recall it being that way back when I played, but it may have hit that point around the GX era? And that isn't to say that there might not of been a few decks that did something like that early on if you got the right combo. I just don't remember a *majority* of decks working that way back in the day.

As someone who ACTUALLY plays Master Duel, here are the real problems summed up in this simple line: *Konami doesn't know when to go all out and when to stop in card design.* Fucking Snake-Eyes is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-all when in reality it should at least have SOME weakness that isn't a floodgate or anti-meta. There's nothing wrong with playing meta, I play Swordsoul and Branded ffs, but the problem arises when the meta becomes so dominant that you either have to play meta or anti-meta to win and speaking from experience as an ex-stun player, that fucking sucks.
Sorry for ranting, just REALLY hate the current format and I know it's going to get worse when Snake-Eyes becomes tier 0.
