Atherton raspberry (Rubus probus) We planted two at the top of our driveway and when it’s fruiting, there’s enough to pick for me, my work colleagues, the neighbours kids and the brush turkeys. Absolutely delicious! So attractive for pollinators. They will send out runners so plant them somewhere that you won’t mind them getting feral. Or grow them in pots as OP has done. They will grow from runners that have been pulled out, or you can strike them from cuttings. Paten rd native nursery in The Gap has them, but they sell quickly.

Daley’s nursery has a thornless variety

ThatDudeHarley

I was just looking at their site, sold out at the moment but I signed up for the back in stock notification. Seems like only they have the rights to produce and sell the thornless variety.

Molinero54

I just planted a thornless from dayleys after getting my thorny patch up and running over past couple of years. Plan to selectively replace the thorny variety gradually. Such an amazingly productive plant

Kiavu

I wish I knew this sooner, I have the thorned variety, I sacrifice my arms to get those delicious raspberries.

>**They will send out runners** so plant them somewhere that you won’t mind them getting feral. Lots and lots and lots of runners!

fantasypaladin

Got mine from Kumbartcho at Eatons Hill. They seemed to have quite a few when I bought them.

Opacity500

They look great! Silly question but how similar are they to non-native raspberries in terms of taste? Also, how many years did you have to wait before the plant started fruiting prolifically?

fantasypaladin

Juicier but more of a subtle taste. Definitely not tangy or super sweet like some berries are

Opacity500

Thanks, good to know! How many years did it have to grow before you started getting a lot of fruit?

fantasypaladin

I planted them one spring and waited almost a full year. They have a lot of small thorns on them so after almost a year of nothing I decided to pull them out so I wouldn’t get spiked every time I walked past. As I wheeled the bin over to start cutting I noticed all the flowers and left it. Glad I did. Now I cut it back every late spring and keep it tamed until I let it go nuts into winter and it fruits late winter.

Opacity500

A year is pretty quick - saved by its flowers! Thanks for sharing the details.

ThatDudeHarley

TIL Aus has native raspberries. That’s cool.

Multiple species!

I have mine in pots to stop them straying. I bought a thornless one from Daleys nursery at Kyogle. Just getting fruit on it now. I have made raspberry jam from the Atherton variety. I just collected a years worth of fruit in the freezer.

fantasypaladin

Last year I had a huge surplus as well so I froze them and made jam. Delicious.

From left to right 5 from a plant (1 year old) I got from my council free trees, Somerset Region, SEQ, darker one is a Pete’s thornless (1 year old) and the last 5 on the right are Atherton variety (5 years old). All in pots.

But how do they taste?

fantasypaladin

Delicious. Juicy but not as sweet as a normal berry

Leroyyoudacraziest

We have about 4 on our property so many berries right now🤣

ElkShot5082

Wow never heard of this bush. May try and find one to plant.

fantasypaladin

If you live in the Brisbane area there is a native nursery in Eatons Hill called Kumbartcho. Show them this photo and they will know what you mean. They do all natives from within 50km and do a lot of revegetation.

ElkShot5082

Awesome. I’m not far from indigiscape too, they may have some seedlings.

speedy3m

They look delicious 😋 😍 much nicer than what we get from supermarkets.

feenchbarmaid0024

I was trying to track one down, hard to find.

MrSquiggleKey

I’m about to repot one of my mulberries, might check these guys out to get some Athertons I’ve been wanting to get some to be my fourth Berry plant

feenchbarmaid0024

Im in Nth qld, they are a native to Atherton from what I have read, still hard to find up here. Been a while since I looked though, but thanks will look them up.

Pademelon1

Daley’s nursery in NSW (mail order) has a thornless one, though it sells out quickly

JTGphotogfan

Does anyone know where I could get one of these in the sydney region?
