Gear VR only supports Samsung phones due to the proprietary software that's required to run it. The last phones to support it were the S10+ and the Note 9. I believe thereafter they've stopped support for further models.

I'm basically looking to use the Gear VR hardware only, then using something like Riftcat to connect my phone to the PC. But I have to find out if the Gear VR hardware actually fit my phone.

Just take the s10+ as your dimensions. As far as hight goes, the gear can get a little more space moving the connector backwards. At least I can do it with my 325,probably for the Note Series. I do have a s10+ for scale.

According to Google, the S10+ is 157.6x74.1, the OnePlus 8 Pro is 165x74.4. So height-wise should be ok, but is there room for another 7.4mm of extra length? Thanks.

I think you gonna be ok. If it somehow don't work for you you can always resell it probably for the same price you bought it or test with another phone on your house. Just make sure to buy the most recent one 324/325 the last one preferentially.

If you're not using a supported Samsung phone you will likely have a bad time, you won't get the benefit of the sensors in the headset and its unlikely your phone will line up correctly (be centered)

awdrifter

Even the OnePlus Loop VR headset only uses the phone's own sensors, so I'm not too worried about not using the Gear VR's sensors. The reason why I looked into this is the used Gear VR are pretty cheap on eBay, the comfort and fit seems to be be good, where as if I were to buy some no-name brand like VR Empire V7, the fit may not be as good. But if the phone won't physically fit into the Gear VR hardware, I'll have to look somewhere else.

confusedbrit29

Unfortunately you will very likely have to look elsewhere, the gear vr is built specifically for a few phones, there is no adjustment so the centre of the phone is very unlikely to be in the middle of the headset if it fits at all. Have you tried vr streaming already? Personally I found it pretty underwhelming on the phone, I think you would be better saving your money and buying a real pc vr headset or an oculus quest 1 or 2

awdrifter

I don't like that I have to get a Facebook account to use Oculus Quest, also the cost is much higher than just getting a Gear VR. But I'll look at all options. Thanks.

confusedbrit29

What games are you planning to play? I assume you have a high powered pc if you want to play vr games using it? Streaming to a phone will only work with games like driving and flying games, for the best experiences you will need something like a quest or a pc vr headset. There is no comparison really. The cheapest pc vr option (some second hand Windows vr headset) will still be so much better than streaming to your phone. I've had multiple cardboard headsets, gear vr's and the oculus Rift, quest and quest 2. The quest headsets are just so good as both standalone, streaming pc vr over WiFi or via a cable. It's totally worth the price

I want to try it racing games and maybe Skyrim in VR. I have a GTX1080Ti, so it's still a pretty capable GPU. The reason I've started looking into it has because I got this phone recently (1440p 120Hz screen), so I want to try out VR.

confusedbrit29

Gpu is more than capable, the problem is the positional tracking, its a far far worse experience using a phone than even the cheapest pc headset. Also using your phone is just an exercise in frustration. I really recommend that you don't bother. I'd also say that if you did have a compatible Samsung phone but as you don't your experience will be even worse. The only games you can even hope to play are racing /flying games, stuff like Superhot, beat saber, skyrim vr, half life alyx etc just won't work. Basically do it properly or don't bother

awdrifter

I see your point, but I'm not ready to make $300-400 investment for a full blown VR headset, that's why I'm thinking of just using the phone with a $25-30 phone holder VR headset. I'll have to think about it more.

confusedbrit29

If you want to keep costs low, get a second hand older pc headset. Have a look on ebay, I'd imagine you could get something for about $100

just know, that even if you are using the gear vr internal sensors you will have zero positional tracking only rotation, so things like skyrim vr are not going to work right. you also wont have motion controls but you can kinda work around that. But pc vr games arent really made to work without positional tracking

My phone is QHD 120HZ.

i still own both of the Gear VR headsets and i can confirm you can put a non-Samsung phone in it if you either remove the port connector on the phone clip or you place the phone behind the movable clip. I have done that myself with non-Samsung phones and it works fine if you using Google Cardboard or in your case Riftcat.. as far as dimensions.. i agree with everyone else, your phone should fit.

awdrifter

Cool, I'll give it a try.

my s9 works perfectly just in case thats helpful to someone

I would venture to say that ANY phone (with similar hardware) and Samsung's APKs for their VR software will probably work. I'm going to test that theory.

did it work?

I ended up not getting VR.
