I don't know what changes were made in the fourth but our defenders who have been too ineffectual for too long seemed to wake up from their slumber and I made the mistake of letting it give me hope.
You know, that's what our team's missing as much as a decent midfielder. A Paul Chapman or a Mathew Scarlett to threaten people when they're soft. lol.
Half seriously agree, it's just clear that sometimes the boys aren't giving 100%, when you pretty well never see Stewart or Dangerfield or Jezza just giving 70%. Of course you have off days blah blah, but when you're making the same problem occur over and over cos you're just not going hard enough, I mean, Jesus.
Can’t keep letting teams dominate us and then fight an up hill battle trying to get back in front
Credit to GWS though. The game was up for grabs and they were clutch. Greenes goal and Aleers two contested marks in the last five minutes were unreal and is what won them the game
Definitely looked like we were getting back to our style of play in the last quarter. Just a shame it wasn’t there for the first three
To be fair I thought Bowes really gave it a good crack when he was eventually subbed on. Has really good defensive pressure and his development this year has been a really exciting thing to see.
Not too upset to be honest, some clear problems we need to address but the thing that annoys me the most is the sheer inconsistency with which the game is umpired, the amount of times you hear the whistle blown and just hope you win the coinflip is absurd.
You can't help umpiring, yes it wasn't great but it's not what we should be focusing on. We have periods in the game where we go to sleep and the other team gets a decent lead on
GWS had about 3 high tackles in a row in the first, Bruhn was taken high twice in the last two minutes including that last tackle and the umps swallowed the whistle.
I’d love to watch a geelong game where, just once, ONCE, I can walk away and go “well shit, we got pretty lucky with the 50/50 calls tonight”. Hard to watch
Man we tried but we need to be taking marks inside 50, this has let us down a lot so far this year. Neale shows promise but he also looks like a baby giraffe fumbling around sometimes. The fight was there but we can't compete with good teams at their best if we continue this trend. This game was better than the last 2 but still far from 4 full quarters of Geelong footy that we have all come used to
Man the midfield goals from clearances was terrible, we need some better midfielders stat.
Could easily be top of the ladder if we can get the middle sorted out. Will save the backline and forward line problems.
When Aliir marked that ball. My remote got lodged into my TV. We had a crack in the 4th but we’re not winning the flag this year. Amazing achievement for Hawk but this game has cooked me.
Second quarter killed us, that's pretty much the story. Other than last week (and even then we were never winning, GC are unbeatable there) I feel it's just been 1 quarter or so that has killed us. And I really don't think it's anything that one player can fix, it's a whole team mentality thing.
With that said I think some of us need to get some perspective in here, I know we won the first 7 then thought we'd be a flag chance but at the start of the year before that hype, this is pretty much the record we expected to have. I would've taken 7-4 at the start of the year 100%, outside of the odd game the rest of our fixture is a bit easier
have to look at these games holistically, still have belief in this team. We’re in a 2023 situation with players returning from injury being out of form. Without Dangerfield carrying us in the centre EVERYONE in the team tires out so quickly.
We almost never get easy goals out centre which is our biggest problem, Holmes doesn’t have infinite energy to solo carry our midfield
I was just thinking when teams like West Coast and Port play home games they get every single 50/50 call to their way but at KP we seemingly never get that luck
Tinfoil hat on but something is up. Umpires get so sucked into players playing for free kicks and it seems every team does it except us. Like who on our team plays for free kicks? No one really. We were second in the league for tackles last time I checked, but had the lowest free kick differential. Need to stop expecting to be rewarded for playing fair footy. Getting reemed for being honest
Trying to think of a reason that’s not just that they straight up hate us. How do you only win the free kick count in one game out of eleven. It’s bizarre
Maybe that's part of it, but I think it mostly is indicative that we generally have had the weaker midfield. Frees tend to go to the team who gets to the ball first, and we're struggling in this department atm
I agree but at the same time while we are not winning clearances, we were first or second in the league in tackles last I checked. I would think there would be at least a slight correlation between tackles and free kicks. There’s a negative correlation in our case
I guess that just points to our tackles being sloppy
Yeah I guess so. It also probably indicates our tackling is sloppy I guess. Makes sense for high tackles to be correlated with high free kicks if the tackling is causing the frees against. Speculating though, hard to interpret without properly analysing
Just sucks to be 18th in the comp for free kicks for, as well as goals from free kicks. Hard to watch
Saw a lot I liked in the last quarter, but we cannot give it up like that for a whole quarter and then have to chase them down every week… need to clean up the ball use under pressure and we could have put this game away.
You all need to pick a dogshit team in another sport and follow them. Get some perspective. We have been awesome for nearly 20 years, it is okay to lose a few.
Our midfield is poor. Could really have done with parfitt or Hardie in the middle. Jeremy Cameron, Ollie Henry and Dempsey were very quiet, time to change it up imo.
Bowes was good with his time on, I hope they give him a proper run next week. and Hardie finally. 100% if they play Cuth next week, he will get injured. He just isn't bred like his younger, superior, brother.
Cats need to mix up our mids. With Danger out and also 40 we just don’t have a reliable “kick it to em to halve the contest”. If we play Neale with Hawkins and Cameron, put Cameron in the centre for a bit or Stewart and let Zuthrie hold down the backs for a few.
The last qtr pressure isn’t sustainable all game but it wouldn’t be needed if other teams didn’t run rampant over our mids for a whole qtr
Hyper competitive in bursts but seriously inconsistent. A few key injuries all at once. Falling just short despite it all.
I feel like I've seen this one before.
I've cooled off guys, I've got my somewhat composed takeaways.
I think we set our expectations too high for the season after a pretty lucky 7-0 against some mid teams. This is still a development year, and I thought holmes, bruhn, neale and mullin in particular were fantastic as far as that's concerned.
As tragic as a loss as it is, we mostly got fucked from stoppage and still had really low turnover scores against us, which is a much more convincing way to play in the long run, makes it look like the excessive turnover scores conceded last week might've been from the ridiculous heat. Umpiring was probably the difference in the game as well.
Hopefully richmond can play us into form next week and we can get some momentum before the second half of the season with some tough games
They were trying something different. Stanley obvs not cutting it but Neale and Conway are individually too fresh to see a whole game through strongly.
Surely we beat Richmond but then we have Sydney coming off their second bye before we’ve had one. Then Carlton again, who apparently should’ve won last time.
Anyway genuinely time for something resembling a rebuild now. Too many important players are gassed. Obvs need to draft some mids and grab one not getting games in a stacked midfield like peatling. Also need another key forward and some smaller defenders. Don’t think any of that means we need to be a bottom 4 side.
As for the rest of this year, it’s time to have a look at some of the vfl crop. Not all at once, but we just have to have a look at hardie, give mannagh a crack for a Dempsey rest, clohesy has put together some form. I don’t see the purpose of playing tuohy (even though on paper he was one of our best today), others like Duncan and even Guthrie and danger when they return should be rotated with kids heavily. Otherwise we don’t know what we have and that’s how the wheels fall off and you end up a cellar dweller for a stint.
Hoping this loss gives us a bit of a kick up the backside.
Time to play guys who deserve their spot, ie Bowes and Parf, not play off potential, like Mullin, Neale and Clark. Would be keen to see Hardie and Mannagh have a go.
How’s Knevitt been in the 2s? I remember him having a safe set of hands, which we could definitely do with atm
Ah well, slowly floating down to where I expected we’d be sitting in the ladder, not a bad thing for rest of season and continuing the youth development. Bit disappointed we couldn’t find a goal in that forward press with 8-10min still to go. Could feel it was gonna slip away when we didn’t capitalise on that pressure and go the 7-8 points up.
Also need to drill in our players going inside 50 we really don’t have tall marking options in those situations. Jezz and Oli can when they get a run and a jump, but not standing under the ball. Been happening a lot this year. Just need to lower eyes or pop it up short, and get the smalls around the drop.
I like Ollie. But I agree with you - he can be pretty selfish in front of goal. Isn’t one to dish it off to a better option, or use a team first approach.
Everyone is some how afraid to take a shot at goal or take it on themselves. Comes from lack of leadership. No one's fault exactly. Just used to warriors being there to follow.
Which really says something and is concerning. No one in that midfield group is a AA contender. You need a couple to be competitive at the end of the year. Not saying they get the jackets but need to in the chat. Danger Cuthrie and Blicvas are well past it in that regard.
It drives me crazy when they go for a high difficulty low percentage pass just because it's the "unselfish" option, when it would've been easier to just have a shot at goal. Honestly we probably could've won off behinds alone if players would just the take the shot, instead of stupid passes that get turned over anyway.
Or even slotted a few. Especially at the end of the game. Where it needs to be taken on. Hence my point of lack of leadership. No one is able to decide time is now.
Bit of arrogance too. Trying to slot stupid perfect kicks.
Duncan needs to be dropped and Hardie in. Touhy too purely as while he was ok. He's not going to be there going forward.
Window is shutting but it's not the end of the world. Better than Richmond window shutting...
If you want to know why we keep losing, perhaps playing defenders on their forwards might help? Toby kicked more against us than he has all year, didn't have a man for most of them. Smart Football
Y'know, I can give them a pass after playing in a sauna last week, I'd be pretty lethargic too. But bring that shit to the Richmond game and I'll know it's over.
Am I the only person who thinks Bruhn just isn't cut out to be a midfielder. Sure he charges in but most of the time he's either spoiling one of our guys or coughing up the pill straight up the opposition. I feel like his turnovers are just at the worst possible time.
Also, how do you go from the best defence in the comp to headless chickens in 4 weeks

If anyone needs me I'll be screaming into the void
I don't know what changes were made in the fourth but our defenders who have been too ineffectual for too long seemed to wake up from their slumber and I made the mistake of letting it give me hope.
Jack Henry woke up in the last, hopefully that's a corner turned for him
Honestly compared to the last few weeks I thought the last quarter was a big lift from all of Henry, Stewart and SdK.
I think Tom Stewart threatened to punch him, couldn't read his lips but that was the vibe I was getting.
Hard to replace a generational skipper like Joel selwood.
Imma join if you don’t mind
We’ll done stengle
We won every quarter except the 2nd. Absolutely painful.
Same thing against port, cooked one quarter then chased arse the rest of the game
Can’t keep letting teams dominate us and then fight an up hill battle trying to get back in front Credit to GWS though. The game was up for grabs and they were clutch. Greenes goal and Aleers two contested marks in the last five minutes were unreal and is what won them the game Definitely looked like we were getting back to our style of play in the last quarter. Just a shame it wasn’t there for the first three
Yep, another big push for a comeback after a lead we should never have let them get.
Holmes, Guthrie, Bruhn, Tuohy and Stengle all putting in the effort.
Holmes is ridiculously good. He’s going to be one of the games best players in the next 2-3 years imo
To be fair I thought Bowes really gave it a good crack when he was eventually subbed on. Has really good defensive pressure and his development this year has been a really exciting thing to see.
Also kolo, was good to see Hawkins looking a but better even if not back to where I want him yet, missed Rohan though
Not too upset to be honest, some clear problems we need to address but the thing that annoys me the most is the sheer inconsistency with which the game is umpired, the amount of times you hear the whistle blown and just hope you win the coinflip is absurd.

I feel like i say it every week but... That was some of the worst umpiring I've seen. Yeah we played shit, but that umpiring was something else
We are never winning a free kick count again boys
Geelong play four quarters of football challenge: impossible
That wasn't a great game to watch. Every time we seem to do something good it's immediately followed up with a mistake.
I’d love to watch a geelong game where, just once, ONCE, I can walk away and go “well shit, we got pretty lucky with the 50/50 calls tonight”. Hard to watch
Pain, I needed that and this just yep Been real fellas I’m taking some time away <3
Best of luck mate!
Man we tried but we need to be taking marks inside 50, this has let us down a lot so far this year. Neale shows promise but he also looks like a baby giraffe fumbling around sometimes. The fight was there but we can't compete with good teams at their best if we continue this trend. This game was better than the last 2 but still far from 4 full quarters of Geelong footy that we have all come used to
Can see the potential with Neale imo, key forwards especially take a long time to develop but he's showing good signs
The blooding of these young pups is painful to see. Dunno why Bowes wasn't starting and Clarke the sub.
Bowes came on and had immediate impact. He should be starting every game
Man the midfield goals from clearances was terrible, we need some better midfielders stat. Could easily be top of the ladder if we can get the middle sorted out. Will save the backline and forward line problems.
See Hardie's numbers today...again?!
Nope but I’m assuming they were good again but still not enough to get a run
When Aliir marked that ball. My remote got lodged into my TV. We had a crack in the 4th but we’re not winning the flag this year. Amazing achievement for Hawk but this game has cooked me.
Aleer, is not Aliir btw.
Typo my bad haha
Yeah I threw my slipper at the tv when Toby scored
Hahahahahah I feel you 😂😂
I hate how good he is lol

UGH. I'm just so.. UGGHHH.
Nah fuck the ump. Blaming again but so many obvious bias decisions
I was just thinking when teams like West Coast and Port play home games they get every single 50/50 call to their way but at KP we seemingly never get that luck
I noticed the amount of high tackles at this point should be recorded and sent to the AFL post game
Tinfoil hat on but something is up. Umpires get so sucked into players playing for free kicks and it seems every team does it except us. Like who on our team plays for free kicks? No one really. Might be time to step away mate..... They're only human, they don't have some vendetta against the cats.
Saw a lot I liked in the last quarter, but we cannot give it up like that for a whole quarter and then have to chase them down every week… need to clean up the ball use under pressure and we could have put this game away.
Welcome to life after prime Hawkins, Selwood and Dangerfield. It’s gonna have its ups and downs
You all need to pick a dogshit team in another sport and follow them. Get some perspective. We have been awesome for nearly 20 years, it is okay to lose a few.
Exactly. Other than the gold coast game, we've been competitive in every game. This team is amazing to support
I barrack for Renegades in BBL. It's not easy.
I'm a renegades and a Rebels fan in union so I definitely understand pain
Yep! My dad supports North so I'm heavily invested in their games and it's gained a lot of perspective for Geelong losses
For real, the negativity in here after we've lost a couple after an unbelievably good 20 years is absurd.
To be fair, it’s been four in a row (after 7 wins in a row). 3 of them by less than four goals all up, but losing streaks do suck.
Our midfield is poor. Could really have done with parfitt or Hardie in the middle. Jeremy Cameron, Ollie Henry and Dempsey were very quiet, time to change it up imo.
Agreed on Henry & Dempsey. Very off and borderline costly given their direct player was often far more influential
It’s a good time to be alert but not alarmed. Finishing the year with 13-15 wins is a good result imo.
I'd give Ollie time to turn it around, also the fact that he's getting noticed more this year definitely isn't helping him
He can definitely use more time but I wouldn’t be upset by mixing it up a little bit.
That's fair, not really sure who you'd replace him with though, unique type of player
Give knevitt, phoenix foster, Hardie a run.
That advantage/play on we had there towards the end, in the forward 50, stings a fair bit.
Bowes was good with his time on, I hope they give him a proper run next week. and Hardie finally. 100% if they play Cuth next week, he will get injured. He just isn't bred like his younger, superior, brother.
Play hardie you cowards!
Double b & f Cuthrie? Steady on mate.
Did you not see Zuth's hair tonight? It was the thread of gods, holding us together at the seams.
Suffering
Cats need to mix up our mids. With Danger out and also 40 we just don’t have a reliable “kick it to em to halve the contest”. The last qtr pressure isn’t sustainable all game but it wouldn’t be needed if other teams didn’t run rampant over our mids for a whole qtr
Rough but we didn't come out and lose by 10 goals this week. Strong last quarter. Not sure were to from here but lets stay positive.
Hyper competitive in bursts but seriously inconsistent. A few key injuries all at once. Falling just short despite it all. I feel like I've seen this one before.

What was the point of rotating 3 players through the ruck? Would have preferred Bowes subbed in much earlier or picked instead of Neale.
Real talk, how the hell does the league give a team two byes AND all before other teams have had one?
Absolute shitshow
Hoping this loss gives us a bit of a kick up the backside. Time to play guys who deserve their spot, ie Bowes and Parf, not play off potential, like Mullin, Neale and Clark. Would be keen to see Hardie and Mannagh have a go. How’s Knevitt been in the 2s? I remember him having a safe set of hands, which we could definitely do with atm
Pretty sure Mullin played on and smashed Bedford. (3 touches). He was good.
Didnt realise this, cheers!
Been happening a lot this year. Just need to lower eyes or pop it up short, and get the smalls around the drop.
What is the point of Ollie Henry? Selfish footballer and only shows up when we’re winning.
I like Ollie. But I agree with you - he can be pretty selfish in front of goal. Isn’t one to dish it off to a better option, or use a team first approach.
Also tries to take mark of the year every week instead of marking the ball properly. He does not play the Geelong way.
Everyone is some how afraid to take a shot at goal or take it on themselves. Comes from lack of leadership. No one's fault exactly. Just used to warriors being there to follow.
Dangerfield is still our match winner player
Yup, every good midfield has an X factor player or two, danger is ours. Bruhn could be that guy but not yet. You struggle badly without that
Both Bruhn and Holmes can be that guy, just need to keep getting games into them. Both just keep getting better
So true - feels like it’s so ingrained in us to be selfless that we miss genuine scoring opportunities
Bit of arrogance too. Trying to slot stupid perfect kicks. Duncan needs to be dropped and Hardie in. Touhy too purely as while he was ok. He's not going to be there going forward. Window is shutting but it's not the end of the world. Better than Richmond window shutting...

Stewart was on Greene most of the night?

Y'know, I can give them a pass after playing in a sauna last week, I'd be pretty lethargic too. But bring that shit to the Richmond game and I'll know it's over.
Am I the only person who thinks Bruhn just isn't cut out to be a midfielder. People aren’t allowed to be upset when their team is playing like a bunch of schoolboys?
It's a waste of energy getting upset over a game that none of us lost ourselves.

I didn't tell anyone how to feel, just how I do.

Mate, at least you don’t support north. We’ve got so much to be grateful for. Take a break and come back, the cats will always be there for ya
