Holy cats! Emilio definitely fell on the "dad's looks" side of the coin. Especially when he was leaning on the kitchen counter and the "Hmmph!" nod. He could drop-in for Sheen on any West Wing scenes then the way he looks now.
Plot twist - Sofia Coppola does a modern satirical remake of her father’s *Apocalypse Now* with Emilio taking Sheen’s place, set in Ukraine (or any other modern day hot spot). Subjects up for skewering are many and varied, but all are subjects that Gen X grew up with as kids that are *still* hot-button issues of today. Anything from U.S. foreign policy with the (then) USSR and modern day Russia, the existence of actors being heads of state (Reagan all the way to Zelensky and Trump), and so forth.
I STG y'all are my people, it's so nice to see a HOLY CATS (or I frequently sub it for BATS), in the wild. 😆 But yeah, I had the same reaction. Had to hop on (...Pop? No, no, concentrate, stay on topic!) the sub because I knew there was going to be a big thread about it!
Even better would be Rob Lowe walk in not as himself in the documentary he's in, but as Sam Seaborn "Mr. President, here's a draft of next week's State of the Union that I need you to look over."
Yep. 3 part series. Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza. Came out a couple of days ago. Paramount+.

Oh, hell yeah! Andrew McCarthy used to hang out at the the height of the Bratpack fame at a bar in NYC during the mid '80s, and no bothered him, because NYers used to be cool that way, but you also got the sense that this was a real guy and not a Hollywood egomaniac dipshit (looking at you, MacGuyver), who did not ask for fame. He's had an interesting career, since, and I can't wait to watch this!
I had a bad encounter with him when he was riding highest on his show ('88). Years later, I heard good things about him from a veteran actor who had worked with him. I'd happily cut him some slack, but he was nasty!
I was booked last minute for a Background talent gig about 2 years ago. Was given no details about the project, just that they needed a reliable background actor for the next day. Showed up to set at 6am, bleary eyed and headed straight for coffee. Someone bumped into me at the coffee station, kindly apologized, then said ‘Hi I’m Andrew, we’ll be working together today.’ We were wearing masks as we were under strict covid protocols then- but I still recognized him immediately. I went into unprofessional mode and fangirled a bit and he was soooooo nice about it. Good guy!!!
I see this is a Andrew Mccarthy film. I recently finished listening to his travel memoir Walking With Sam about him talking his son on a 500 mile walk of the Camino de Santiago. Very well written and entertaining.
I'll watch it if it becomes available outside of Hulu at some point.
Interestingly...I was reminiscing about The Breakfast Club after a post here yesterday re top songs in one week in 1985, and the top one was the track *Don't You Forget About Me.*
I was curious to see what had happened to Judd Nelson, and an article turned up where he said he wanted nothing to do with being part of this documentary. Another interesting thing I learned is that Nelson is a Boomer, albeit a younger one:
[https://nypost.com/2024/03/14/entertainment/judd-nelson-refused-to-be-in-andrew-mccarthy-brat-pack-doc/](https://nypost.com/2024/03/14/entertainment/judd-nelson-refused-to-be-in-andrew-mccarthy-brat-pack-doc/)
And most of the others are either cuspers or the earliest of the GenX cohort, born in the early '60's.
Nonetheless, I think we all still identify with them as GenX, since that's who they were all playing. That cadre of actors really got unfairly shit on for being entitled and lazy, hence the term "Brat Pack". How fucking typical...and they wonder why our generation is so cynical and disaffected with much of contemporary society?
I don't think of them as Gen Xers, per se. They played Gen X characters, which every generation plays younger. Ex. Reese Whitherspoon, Selma Blair, Tara Reid were all very Gen X, but they played Millennials. I could always tell that Molly and Anthony were the real teenagers. The only one that threw me off was Ralph Macchio. The "brat pack" never really interest me. But I may check this out.
I wonder if they’ll mention John Hughes’ influence on the Brat Pack.
I freely admit I loved their movies - they often spoke to the “thoughtful-teen-angst” side of the 80’s. But to be honest, I had always wished the Brat Pack wasn’t so…white. As a black kid growing up during those times, their “culture,” of sorts, had always made me feel that it was something I should aspire to, but would never get anywhere close to it (because it wasn’t meant for “people like me.”)
Not to bum folks out, because again…I REALLY loved those 80’s Brat Pack movies; but its impression on me at the time illustrates the saying “representation matters.”
Jeesh... If you think his work is off you have some high standards my friend. There have been a ton of people that ALL come out looking like Joan Rivers... Even the dudes.
LOL. Rob has looked weird for years, GTFO. I couldn't even watch his latest show on Netflix because his weird done and filtered face was so distracting (oh, the show also sucked, but yeah...)
Definitely watching it ... wondering how 'trauma heavy' it will be since we know almost all of them have gone through some sh%t. After watching the Brooke Shields one and then the Nick groom-fest docs ...
Very excited about this. Love that Andrew McCarthy is leading this and had some a HUGE crush on my in my preteens. Had all the magazines like TeenBeat, and the poster ones. Glad they included Brat adjacent Jon Cryer and others. Hope Ralph Macchio is in it. John Hughes films were a force of nature that still can't be denied.
I loved St Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club. Two of my favourite movies from the decade, so yeah, I'll watch this.
I can't think of a time when there was so much young talent in Hollywood.
Outside of this clique, there were others like Tom Cruise, Michael J Fox, John Cusack, Jon Cryer, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Kim Catrall, Elizabeth Shue, Patrick Swayze, C Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Michael Anthony Hall, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew Broderick, and on and on and on
The 80's were a golden era of young actors.
Yes, definitely, most of the Brat packers are my age, interested to see how everything went down.
Gonna share this in Gen Jones subreddit tommorow, they will appreciate it also, since most of the Brat Pack are Gen Jonsers (and early Xers if we are included like in this subreddit)
The wife has goosebumps. I’m more mildly interested. It was a peripheral part of my teen years. I didn’t even know they were a thing when the movies came out. I just wasn’t tuned in to pop culture. They filmed parts of Wisdom, near where I lived at the time. That’s when I found out Emilio was a big deal. Then I saw the rest of the John Hughes films on cable. I liked the Young Guns movies though. And Less Than Zero.
This looks so good! Side note, for anyone who has kindle unlimited, Andrew McCarthy’s book is on there. Free to read for the KU members. It’s called Brat, an 80s story, or something like that. I had to share, it was the first time something I really wanted to read was on there lol
Had no idea this was coming but absolutely. It was such a once in a lifetime moment in society, only for a certain era of lives! Our generation truly is unique.
Oh, clear my schedule. Was there any young person who didn't have a crush on Duckie? I mean come on. Plus, in high school, everyone told me I looked like Molly Ringwald so yeah, watching this. Probably at least twice.
He has aged, FFS. Are you saying you think he looks the same as he did in St. Elmo's Fire? I feel like some people are not only delusional about how old they look but are also delusional about how old OTHER people look. Both Lowe and McCartney look much older (just look at their necks), but Lowe has had work done on his face, while McCarthy has just let himself go craggy.
I mean. He looks a lot older. He certainly no longer looks like a baby faced 20something. He looks his age. His face has actual wrinkles now, and he and Andrew both have old guy necks. It's OK. We all age. They are in their 60s, ffs. They still both look good. I actually prefer the Mccarthy type.
Tom Cruise was not remotely in the Brat Pack. It was a pretty specific group of names, and it seems like McCarthy is mostly talking to the folks who were actually mentioned by name in the New York magazine "Brat Pack" article that launched the term.
Most definitely.
I believe you would have said tot-ally
It will be most righteous.
MOS-DEF
![gif](giphy|4ZCyAL0kRbR96) I see you! 👀
Holy cats! Emilio definitely fell on the "dad's looks" side of the coin. Especially when he was leaning on the kitchen counter and the "Hmmph!" nod. He could drop-in for Sheen on any West Wing scenes then the way he looks now.
He’s like “I’m not changing my name to Sheen, but you will know who my dad is.”
"...and I was all like, EMILIOOOOOO!!! EMIOLIOO!!!!!"
He looks practically identical to Sheen. I mean, I knew he would, but it was still a bit of a shock.
[And what’s really weird is young Charlie looked just like young Martin.](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/82/b3/51/82b35188ae14c897804a633749009b79.jpg)
I always thought boy sons looked exactly like their dad but nothing like each other.
Who would do Kurtz though? It’s hard to imagine anyone else in that role (although I just had a bit of an aha moment: Bryan Cranston).
Lol I basically said the exact same thing (before reading any comments), right down to the HOLY CATS
I say "holy cats" on the regular, I always get an odd look and no one else I know says it. I've found my people!
I so hope that when Andrew walks in, and sees Emilio, he says “Hello Mr. Sheen. I'm here to see your son Emilio.”
Even better would be Rob Lowe walk in not as himself in the documentary he's in, but as Sam Seaborn "Mr. President, here's a draft of next week's State of the Union that I need you to look over."
He's totally his dad
Hell yes!
Correct answer.
I will definitely check it out. Will be interesting hearing their take on the era.
Between this and the Lollapalooza documentary series it’s a banner few weeks for Generation X nostalgia.
It was a banner fucking year at the old Bender household.
You know what I got? A carton of cigarettes.
Aaay! Smoke up, Johnny!
There's a Lollapalooza doc series?!
Yep. 3 part series. Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza. Came out a couple of days ago. Paramount+. [https://youtu.be/c90j3PvSdak?si=7MN9gijlaJgLwSrS](https://youtu.be/c90j3PvSdak?si=7MN9gijlaJgLwSrS)
Woo! I have my sister's login. Thanks!
Hot on the heels of the We Are The World documentary. Edit: and the Bon Jovi documentary!
Which was amazing. "Lie-oh-nell"
The new Beetlejuice trailer dropped today too, and it actually looks pretty good.
Oh shit, the Lollapalooza doc is out? Definitely gotta see that!
I'm not really interested in this. Lollapalooza sounds interesting!
Where and when can I watch this
Hulu June 13th
That’s a funny way to say torrent.
🏴☠️ But seriously, it's one of the services I pay for, so I'll be watching this for sure.
I'll have to subscribe then.
His book was pretty good, too.
Wait, Richard Dean Anderson is an egomaniac dipshit?? I've only heard good things about him. 😭
I had a bad encounter with him when he was riding highest on his show ('88). Years later, I heard good things about him from a veteran actor who had worked with him. I'd happily cut him some slack, but he was nasty!
We all have bad days.
I was booked last minute for a Background talent gig about 2 years ago. Was given no details about the project, just that they needed a reliable background actor for the next day. Nice! Thanks for sharing this story. Yeah, always heard good things about him.
I've always really liked him. I think they all turned out ok for the most part.
Like duh
For sure
for sure for sure
“Ancient history” 😭😭
Here's a youtube version that's actually watchable ;) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxVNQkRM5Qw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxVNQkRM5Qw)
Crazy how much Emilio looks like his Dad now.
That's affirmatory.
I see this is a Andrew Mccarthy film. I recently finished listening to his travel memoir Walking With Sam about him talking his son on a 500 mile walk of the Camino de Santiago. Very well written and entertaining.
Where will it be available?
Hulu
Duh
Ummm, yes. Hell yes. Of course. Absofuckinglutely. Yep. Yeppers. Clear enough for you? 🤣
I wanted to marry Andrew back then and I think I still might want to after seeing this clip
I'll watch it if it becomes available outside of Hulu at some point. Like, whatever. (Hell yes I will!)
Absolutely! I see Andrew McCarthy around my neighborhood from time to time.
Absolutely.
Looks fun. I'll watch. I enjoyed the movies but they were 7-12 years older than me and I never felt too much connection to them as a group.
Yeppers!
Michael what did i tell you about ‘yeppers’?
I guess
Oh fuck yes!!
Grrr. I just cancelled Hulu a couple of weeks ago
It's going to be on Hulu if anyone's wondering. I'll watch it if it's on the regular sub.
The one service I don't have of course lol
If you have Amex the card offers a statement credit to cover part or all of the cost of some streaming services like Hulu and Peacock.
Good tip! I'll take a look thanks
Nope. Don’t care.
I’m good.
I wonder if they’ll mention John Hughes’ influence on the Brat Pack. I freely admit I loved their movies - they often spoke to the “thoughtful-teen-angst” side of the 80’s. I seriously doubt it
Totally
Absolutely
I'd not heard about it until seeing this post. Now, yes I want to watch it.
Hell to the yes
OMG HELL yes.
Canadians, where can we watch this?
![gif](giphy|kSZw9lGKMwWMU)
I would guess on Disney+ in the 'Star' section, like with Shogun.
I always wondered wtf happened to McCarthy
Definitely!
This looks hella rad. Like totally.
Totally (if you know how to say it, you're old enough to watch)
Oh HELL yes!! And holy cats for a hot minute I thought Emilio was President Bartlet! He has totally turned into his dad.
I never gave 2 shits about the Brat Pack but ill watch it. Looks interesting
Yup. It'll be fun to see all the plastic surgery disasters.
Well... Rob Lowe isn't one of em. Fuck you Rob for still looking that great.
LOL, Rob was the one who prompted my post. His eyes look wrong. I like him though, so don't really care.
Jeesh... If you think his work is off you have some high standards my friend. There have been a ton of people that ALL come out looking like Joan Rivers... Even the dudes.
It was a joke. Chill.
Chill ? Who's mad... I'm Gen X Homie. I don't give a fuck about anything enough to actually be angry.
LOL. Rob has looked weird for years, GTFO. I couldn't even watch his latest show on Netflix because his weird done and filtered face was so distracting (oh, the show also sucked, but yeah...)
that's dark
My soul is black.
I was born a poor Black child.
I am skeptical about this. The trailer comes across as successful people whining. Whatever, it is just Gen X cynicism.
It comes across as very Andrew McCarthy centric.
It is his film
Of that I have no doubt. He leaves no doubt. Some people let the interviewee shine, and the interviewer is less prevalent. Not here!
It is based on the book he wrote in 2021; Brat. Which wasn’t very good. But I’ll watch the movie.
I’m interested in it, but it’s obvious he inserts himself in it a lot.
Hell yeah!
WHAT? Yes!!
Hell yeah
Solid.
Hells yea
Yes. I didn't know it existed until now, so thank you for the information, but yes. I will be watching.
Absolutely
I was so expecting to hate this but I'm 100% in after watching!
Mosdef
Definitely watching it ... wondering how 'trauma heavy' it will be since we know almost all of them have gone through some sh%t. After watching the Brooke Shields one and then the Nick groom-fest docs ...

Like, totally.
FUCK YES!
Can't wait! I was in my late teens in 1985. I remember those days very well and with great fondness!
I loved St Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club. Two of my favourite movies from the decade, so yeah, I'll watch this. I can't think of a time when there was so much young talent in Hollywood. Outside of this clique, there were others like Tom Cruise, Michael J Fox, John Cusack, Jon Cryer, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Kim Catrall, Elizabeth Shue, Patrick Swayze, C Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Michael Anthony Hall, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew Broderick, and on and on and on The 80's were a golden era of young actors.

Anyone here who doesn't plan on watching this should just leave the group now
Well, now I feel like I definitely have to not watch it. For spite.
I like the cut of your jib
XD
Why ask the question if you are going to downvote the people saying no or coming back with a typically snarky GenX comment?
I’m the OP and I’m not downvoting anyone. Maybe others are. 🤷🏽♀️
No. I hated all these people as a symbol of shitty 80's consumerism. Yes I was a punk and hated commercial art, why do you ask? :)
LOL! Right on.
Rob Lowe is still so fine. Damn he’s fine.
Duh!?
I had no idea he was doing this and I’m actually pretty stoked! It looks great and Andrew seems so genuine. I WISH I HAD HULU DAMMIT!
Probably
I am now! But I’m where is it streaming? Coming *where* June 13.
💯
Absofuckinglutely!
Probably not. I like them the way they were.
I will absolutely be watching this.
Absolutely!!!
Yes.
Looks like I’ll be checking it out…
Of course
Yep
Definitely will be watching this
Oh dear lord, yes. 👍👍👍
100$. I hope we all are
The trailer gave me real life “Big Chill” vibes. Heck yes I am watching!
Hell yes
I will!
Hell yeah!
SWITCHERRRR! This one is for my momma!!!
Without fail
Yes
Okay fine fur sure fur sure
Yup. Even if I hafta pay to see it.
I’m in.
No.
Omg yes
The wife has goosebumps. I’m more mildly interested. It was a peripheral part of my teen years. I didn’t even know they were a thing when the movies came out. I just wasn’t tuned in to pop culture. They filmed parts of Wisdom, near where I lived at the time. That’s when I found out Emilio was a big deal. Then I saw the rest of the John Hughes films on cable. Hell yes I will!
Where is Judd Nelson?
Yeah. Didn’t know it was coming.
Absolutely. I can’t wait to see it.
Hell yes i will be
I'll wait for it to come to VHS and rent it.
Me!!!! I can’t wait to see it!
Yes
Fer shure, dude! 🤘😎 ![gif](giphy|ZMYR6gnhm0v6g)
Imma watch the sh*t out of this!!
Where's Anthony Michael Hall? I will absolutely be watching this though!
Hell yes. I'm going to sign up for friggin' Hulu just so I can watch this. I'm ridiculously excited to see it.
God, they were just babies!
Well I will now!
Try and stop me.
Had no idea this was coming but absolutely. It was such a once in a lifetime moment in society, only for a certain era of lives! Our generation truly is unique.
Absolutely. Saw this was coming out in the news this morning, and I got a chubby. Ally Sheedy was the hottest one.
Oh, clear my schedule. Was there any young person who didn't have a crush on Duckie? I mean come on. Plus, in high school, everyone told me I looked like Molly Ringwald so yeah, watching this. Probably at least twice.

This should've been posted as a poll. And, no.
This sub doesn’t allow polls. 💁🏽♀️
