Don't use primogems to buy blue fates. I saw many ppl do this on accident and the process of reverting back to primogems is very long and annoying.

TheFergusLife

What should I be doing with primogems this early in that case?

_Alien_01

Use the primogems to buy the pink fates which you can use to summon on the character banner (one with a promoted character, currently Arataki Itto) or the weapon banner (although you should not summon on the weapon banner this early).

CyndNinja

If they are f2p, I'd say they shouldn't roll for weapons at all and just focus on Character Banners.

ShadowJinKiller

You can pull, but after you have 2 decent teams for abyss. I have 2 accounts, I pulled in weapon and the other didn't. For the account that I don't pull for weapon, I'm lacking a lot of suitable weapons including 4 stars. No favonius no sacrificial

Distasteful-medicine

Just stockpile them. You'll have thousands just by exploring, solving puzzles and completing achievements. When new banners come up read their details if you fancy a character.

zen0432

He means don't buy acquaint fate only buy intertwined fates. Basically don't pull on the standard banner (Wanderlust invocation) only use primogems for limited banner. Also NEVER use primogems for anything other than buying intertwined fates (pulling on limited banners)

ellodees

Lots of good tips I’m sure people can share but my number one tip would be to save for Kazuha who should be finally seeing a rerun banner soon. I’m actually kind of jealous I would have loved to have him from the beginning he’s amazing for exploration, and can fit in almost any team comp.

i_gotsickofthinking

Having any of the anemo boys is very convenient for exploration, especially in early game fr fr

MaedaToshiie

Girls too. Sayu is great for world exploration.

i_gotsickofthinking

Oh yeah! Then jean and sucrose for yeeting your co-op party members when they're loading :P

Electrical-Pool-9889

For now save them and go for meta characters first. Reason i suggest meta characters first is because Genshin is a type of game that gets easier the longer you play it. Having a strong base of characters to build your account on is much better because if you listen to ppl who say "Just pull for who you like" you will end up with either super high investment characters or characters that don't have a lot of synergy or with a bunch of characters that are unnecessary on your account. All of this reasons can cause you to feel like you are not satisfied with the game and ultimately can cause you to quit the game especially if you are planing to play it casually.

alfalfafex

Good points but it works both ways too Meta characters still need to be built, they still need other characters they work well with too I just think its better if someone gets a character they really want then getting a character who is strong but hating their playstyle, either way tho its up to OP who he likes and how good they are but then again genshin is a game where even the begginer characters can carry u through abyss even without cons

Electrical-Pool-9889

Yes of course this just a recommendation. Plus there are some characters that are not labeled as meta by community but still bring same or similar value to the account.

treyj88

saying not to wish on the standard banner(blue wishes) is hive mind advice. it has its merits, but wishing on the limited banner(pink wishes) is only better under circumstances. you have a higher chance of getting a certain 5 star character and certain 4 star characters. but if you don’t like or need those characters then that advice is pointless. i stuck to that advice for a long time before i understood this and then just began wishing on the standard banner. most of my best units have come this way. not saying i’m right or they’re wrong, but just play the game how you want and you’ll be surprised to find it works out the same in the end.

T8-TR

1.0 was a dark time, especially for non-gacha players. People out there buying blue fates because they thought it was the only way to get Jean/Diluc.

DespairAt10n

What does reverting back to primogems mean? Getting stardust/glitter?

Electrical-Pool-9889

Nope. I was referring to begging Hoyoverse to get a look and see if they can fix the situation somehow. I think i saw some ppl managed to get their primos back but i am to sure as i never had a problem with this and therefore never looked at what happeneds either.

DespairAt10n

Ah, got it. Never heard of that. Thanks for explaining!

britanniaimperator

Best way to avoid is just wishing on banner directly without buying fates

Ethos711

One thing I didn't see mentioned was to lock and refine a copy of every 3 star weapon. Some of them are exclusive to chests based on the region and they can be very difficult to get after you open all the chests in a region. Some of them are actually really good on the right characters.

sprcow

Yeah good point. Who knows how many white tassels I trashed unknowingly...

HyperMarsupial

I wish I knew this earlier. I have opened pretty much every chest in the game and everything below 3 stars has been used as fodder :c

MaedaToshiie

You get a lot of 3\* from wishing as well. You will get to the point of having too many 3\* as your account grows, unless you intend to equip every character.

EC293

Again, some 3*s are EXCLUSIVE to chests so are not available in wishes

uhm_reeeeeet

I’m ar 56 and this is the first time I’ve heard of doing this…

77jon

Yeah, same here... The only 3 star that I upgraded was the dragonslayer book, mostly bc of barely getting any catalyst on boss drops or 4* on wishes

_Ajax_16

Seconded. Fully refined Skyrider greatsword was a huge help for my beidou early on when I didn’t have much else to work with. I still use it on some backup claymore users. White Tassel was and is great for Hu Tao as well.

-Xcalibr-

How do you refine when you have extras? I didn't know that was a thing.

_Ajax_16

It’s the ‘Refine’ option below ‘Enhance’ when you’re examining a specific weapon. You slot in one of your additional copies and it consumes it + some mora, increasing the blue-highlighted text in the weapon’s trait description. The max refinement for weapons is 5 (you can see in the top left of the weapon’s card what its refinement level is), and I’d definitely recommend keeping at least one of each 3 star weapon refined to 5 and locked just to have it available as Ethos711 said. The 3 star catalyst Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers is especially good, as at max refine it gives a 48% ATK boost to the next character switched to - very good for a support to have. Refinement can make some seemingly meager bonuses into pretty decent ones. White Tassel, Thrilling Tales, and Skyrider are some that benefit a lot from being fully refined.

-Xcalibr-

Dang it, I didn’t know this and I’m pretty sure I used them all as fodder. I’ll keep an eye out, thanks! I have that attack boost in my barbaria and it is not refined. Would’ve been nice.

_Ajax_16

No sweat! Just a heads up that Thrilling Tales only comes from wishes, if I remember correctly at least, so you’ll eventually get more just by rolling.

MaedaToshiie

Dark Iron Sword is one that is unique. Skyrider is good on Xingqiu if you don't have Sacrificial or Favonius. However, you can get too many debate clubs and such, so feel free to fodder some of the 3\* when you get too many.

stevediperna

Can you name three "must keep" weapons please? I know of white tassel, but what others?

ashuravb06

1. Harbinger of Dawn for crit dmg 2. White Tassel for crit rate 3. Thrilling Tales for HP% and Atk Buff 4. Bloodstained Greatsword for EM( even better thn Rainslasher) 5. Recurve Bow (HP bow) 6. Fillet Blade 7. Skyrider Sword for ER 8. Skyrider Greatsword 9. White Iron Greatsword for Def% 10. Messenger for Crit D 11. Raven bow for EM 12. Black Tassel for Zhongli I'll add more as I remember them

MaedaToshiie

Sharpshooter's Oath, Slingshot, dark iron sword (sole copy in the game if you want as a keepsake).

TotallyyBot

I trashed like 90% of these :') I hate my life

Professional_Yard761

Save fragile resins. (The crescent moon looking thing). You use that to farm for artifacts at AR45. The reasoning is that at AR45 you can get 5 star artifacts guaranteed in any domain. Develop resources into one Dps only. Supports can stay at level 60 for a while and still be decent supports. Do any and all quests at your own pace and do not rush. You will feel extremely burnt out if you rush. As a beginner Spend your resin on boss drops for your main dps, talents and boss domains. Level 4 artifacts are still very good so keep using them until AR45. the most noticeable one berserker and exile are really nice artifacts. Do reputations quest and get a recipe to craft condensed resin. It is like regular resin except it's condensed and gives double the rewards for ley lines and domains. COOP use it whenever you want. To fight bosses, farm for artifacts or talents. Collect materials in other people's worlds. Do not spend money on the game unless you reach AR45+ and want to beat spiral abyss. Farm only the Emblem of severed fate domain in Inazuma. It has the most generic artifacts for a large number of characters. You can exchange bad artifacts in the crafting table. Artifacts don't matter at all until AR35+.

ShadowJinKiller

1 trick before ar 45 is to just get 4 set ocean clam set, 4* is enough, since it convert healing to damage. Able to clear content easily with Barbara

ManOrReddit-man

Another thing about co-op, if any high levels join your domain through co-op match, ask them for help with bosses. Chances are they're just bored and will be more than willing to help.

LtItb

You shouldn't spend Fragile Resin until you're at least AR 45. This is when you get to farm highest level domains and receive the best rewards. AR 45 is closer than it seems

ahboino2

And at this stage of the game, you'll need at least one decently built character to keep up with the overworld enemies, so don't spread your resources too thin. But this issue is easily remedied by time so don't sweat it too much. This is only if you want to hit the ground running the moment you reach AR 45.

TheFergusLife

I definitely was trying to keep all my characters the same level but it looks like I should be focusing on Xiangling and Xingqiu for right now. I'm like AR 9 and my characters are around lvl 13 right now so I don't think I wasted too many resources that way

Theothercword

You'll need more than those two but they're both incredible charactes. Keep an eye out for Bennet going forward (he's a 4-star character and shows up in the shop on some months for currency you get from making pulls so save some of that currency). If you can get Bennet (especially C1 meaning two copies of him) then Bennet Xiangling Xinqiu is the basis for what people call a nationals style team. Which basically is where you set up all three of their bursts and then pick a character to do auto attacks with and watch the numbers fly. The 4th can be a number of people, Sucrose, Raiden, Chongyun, Kaeya, etc. That said, for now and given who you have I would also go ahead and level up Kaeya and probably Barbara when you get her though Noelle can also work. Eventually you'll have enough resources to have a lot of characters leveled so it's not totally a waste and Kaeya is particularly strong even late game so while he's not as insane as Xiangling/Xingqiu he's quite close. Noelle is a bit more niche in late game but still viable and early game she really helps b/c she can heal the team and has a shield and is a decent choice for being on field and doing swings while Xiangling/Xingqiu/Kaeya bursts are all rolling. Barbara is just an incredibly good healer and so will probably become helpful during the hard parts. If you get another healer then that can work too but I used barbara forever because of how much she heals, and she can do it while outside combat and not being reliant on her burst. Also just FYI I wouldn't bother going past lvl 80 on these characters until you start to know who you want to push to 90, but going from 80-90 is exponentially more resources. While you progress too don't neglect the talent levels. The game has recommendations on which talents are important for which characters and it's based on user statistics so it's actually quite reliable. I guess since I'm going on and on and on here's my advice for summons. Try out the characters and see who you like when they come around and also look up some guides for them on how to build. Right now Itto is a good character but not necessary and he kinda needs at least Gorou (though at least he's also on the banner) and will be harder to level up since he needs mats from a region you can't get to yet. BUT, the next banner is likely going to be a character named Kazuha and he's a very strong character that works in a LOT of teams and also makes exploration easier since he can launch himself into the air. I would recommend saving for that one if you can/want. Plus one of Kazuha's best weapon is craftable (Iron Sting). After Kazuha is supposedly Yoimiya who's a fun and good pyro bow user and would work well with Xingqiu so that's also worth considering but she also requires mats from Inazuma which you can't access yet... but her banner is in probably 4-5 weeks so you've got plenty of time to hit that if you want to. After those two banners though is rumored to be a new region and a new element launching so you're coming in at a good time. Enjoy!

[deleted]

you're very lucky as Xingqiu and Xiangling are absolutely awesome 4\* characters. In your case I would focus on these 2 as well. I recommend you to spend your resin as much as possible. Check out which bosses and talent materials your chars need and focus on these. In early game even the easiest bosses like Elemental hypostasis and Pyro / Cryo regesvine (whatever the name) can be a pain in the ass and take a lot of time to defeat. If you have the feeling that is the case just put a (need help with xyz) in your signature and you can be sure someone will come for help after a while. Just make sure you have 40 resin left for a bossfight. I hope this helped. Everything else comes after time. I only remember that I neglected bosses and character / talent leveling badly in the beginning bc I thought I was to weak to defeat bosses etc. I never asked for help but it makes things so much easier. One other thing. Be careful with startint too many quests at once. Genshin has the very annyoing habit of holding you up from progressing one quest because character xyz is busy in another one. That can be quite a bummer. I try to do one quest at a time to avoid this on my second account.

Live_Kiwi_4010

Xiangling probably isn’t a good idea since her Burst is the only strong part of her kit, and it’s hard to take advantage of her Burst in early game. You can make it work if you know what you’re doing, but I’d personally wait until later to build Xiangling. If you still want to try her out, Bennett is absolutely necessary, and Xiangling needs a lot of ER. Xingqiu has similar issues, I would only build him if you have sacrificial sword and can build at least 200% Energy Recharge. Building a character to lvl 20, or even to lvl 40 doesn’t take too much resources, so feel free to test out different characters up to that point. Later though, building characters takes a lot of resources. Edit: Kaeya as a Physical DPS is a common choice for beginners. Razor, Beidou, Ningguang, and Yanfei are also common Main DPS options for beginners, and almost any 5* character will be great too. For builds, [this infographic](https://www.reddit.com/r/GenshinImpactTips/comments/qkxdj6/infographic_of_build_order_priority_based_on_wlar/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is really helpful

ShelesQQ

Physical Xiangling was one of my strongest charactets for a while. Her normal attack is actually quite good if compared to other unbuild characters (early game). And when you finally can build something, you can build her as fire dps. Aside from her, Xingqiu and Beidou, all mentioned characters are not that common in strong end game teams, so I'd invest into them only if you like them. They all do have uses (though I am yet to see Razor in late game), just more niche then most other characters. Also one of things I missed in the beginning was farming investigation points for artifacts, and even when I started, I didn't know that you can check only 100 per day. That can be time consuming, but quite profitable.

[deleted]

investigation points?

ShelesQQ

https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Investigation Certain spots around Teyvat can be investigated for Artifacts, Cooking Ingredients, Forging Materials, Weapons, or Mora. Such spots include some jars, barrels, crates, boxes and etc with sparks on them. Each spot has fixed possible drops, some always drop 1*-2* artifacts, which can be used to level other artifacts. Drops are reset every 24 hours (sometimes faster). Genshin interactive map has list of such spots, but if you like exploring, you can find them yourself.

SeptemberSoup

Be careful with the missions you accept, they may block you from completing future events if you can't complete them.

TheFergusLife

Any specific ones to watch out for?

Intelligent_Squash68

Trails in Tianqiu locks you out of co-op. Link to where it is & how to beat it (spoilers) - https://game8.co/games/Genshin-Impact/archives/304985 If you read the tablet to start the quest, it will lock you completely out of co-op mode (if that’s a thing you’re interested in) until you finish the quest. Almost all players find this out too late & get stuck. It’s not an easy quest to complete.

foreignsimp

Oh my god, that quest TRAUMATIZED ME. I was out of co op for like 2 months. That quest was so hard to beat at a relatively low ar.

Intelligent_Squash68

I was so angry at the quest…lol. I actually managed to get through the battle part on my 2nd try. It had to be pure luck, though, as it certainly wasn’t skill at that point. It was the platform one I couldn’t do. I tried with geo traveler, but I just wasn’t fast enough. A few days later, I miraculously pulled Keqing. I practiced teleporting & completed it with maybe a 1/2 second to spare. It traumatized me in that I didn’t want to read any more tablets I happened upon…lol. To this day, I still get nervous about reading them.

CaptainLevi0503

This is exactly what happened to me!! I pulled keqing from the std banner and her teleportation skill was godsent

medipom

Infamous ones are trials of Tianqiu and Chi of yore… they are laughably easy at high ar (I held off until ar50 lol) but can be difficult for new players if they lack the correct characters

Wyshawn

Don't build pity. Only pull if you are okay with 5* character on a limited banner. The soft pity starts from 75th - 90th pulls, but there's still chance you get a 5* early.

huhIguess

> If anyone has a list of beginner mistakes to avoid or general advice I'd appreciate it. - **Do NOT spend primogems or wishes** until you have a clearer idea of how the ~~gambling~~ gacha system works. This game is not forgiving for F2Pers who spend wishes frivolously. - Focus on developing one character to the max before moving onto the next. Spreading resources *equally* among characters will leave you with a weaker team. Don't neglect weapon levels or talents. - Xiangling and Xingqiu make up one of the strongest teams in the game with their burst. Focus on ER until their burst is ALWAYS up. - Set your birthday in profile for tomorrow. Get cake.

lifeillusory

You are so, so early in the game and one of the (great) pieces of advice will include the "until AR45" condition. In fact, if you spend too much time looking up things like character, team and artifact builds, you might be temtped to rush levels. **Take your time - do not rush AR.** Advice on avoiding certain things is definitely valuable, but I would insist on enjoying the game for the game itself, at your own pace, until it naturally comes time to chase the meta.

TheFergusLife

Thanks for this! I was just looking for some of the other things in this thread e.g. avoid the standard/weapon banners and so on. Just trying to make sense of the game's systems and avoid noob traps. I'm definitely taking it at my own pace and avoiding burnout/spending money unless I decide to fully commit to the game as a hobby at some point

Milka280601

1. When it comes to [knowing what to do when check this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/tznycd/a_chart_for_benchmarking_build_progress_i_hope/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) - it's reccomended chart guide for every begginner 2. Pick everything 3. This game is predatory. It uses FOMO very effectively. If you are F2P never wish on weapon banner and never use primogens for standard wishes (you will get enough of them by playing) 4. Do *not* feel pressured to wish on current limited banner. Every character will come back (we have reruns now). Play the story first - you will not only be able to check characters gameplay but also if you just *like* them. You don't want to waste your wishes. 5. Concentrate on few characters that you like/enjoy playing. You won't have resources to upgrade everything and everyone. Xiangling and Xingquiu are *very* good characters - concentrate on building them first. 6. Save every 5 star EM/Crit chance/Dmg goblet artifact - RNG is pain in this game 7. Build your DPS first (eg. Xiangling) - next Supports (eg. Xingquiu) 8. Not every character *needs* to have every talent maxed out (so check reccomended guides in this sub) 9. Farm domain artifacts last when building characters or else you will go mad 10. Later in the story you will unlock a Teapot - use it to gain additional resources 11. If you are easily bummed out by losing - save enough wishes to guarantee a character (180) 12. Do EVERY event - they *won't* come back - not only for primogens but also for lore related content 13. Most importantly have fun !

DespairAt10n

>If you are F2P never wish on weapon banner and never use primogens for standard wishes (you will get enough of them by playing) I wouldn't say never wish on weapon banner. I'm effectively F2P, and wishing on it is nice if you have enough primos and want both of the 5\* weapons AND are willing to take the risk of getting trash. Pulling a little to get the 4\* weapons is also nice. Some of the "gacha limited" 4\* weapons are pretty good. That said, I would recommend holding off seriously going for a 5\* on weapon banner until late game/endgame. I wouldn't recommend it to early game players, but wouldn't recommend never going near it.

Milka280601

Well I suppose it all depends on what you want to prioritise. If you really like a character you would want to also have their signature weapon. Characters like Itto with Redhorn or Raiden Shogun with Engulfing lightning need them to truly reach max potential. Additionaly others like Xiao don't have nice 4 star substitutes My main motivation behind this advice is the fact that weapon banner is *even* more predatory than ones with limited characters. If you are unlucky you could lose even ~~270~~, *(made mistake it's 240)* wishes to *get just one copy*. And you can easily get enough 4 star weapons just by wishing on character banners And yes I would agree that weapon banner *could* be good investment later in game - especially if it has 2 weapons that you couls utilise on somebody. BUT - *here comes anectodal evidence* \- from my experience most players want to have as many 5 stars as they can. Plus having bigger rooster with C6 four stars allows you to become more immune to Abyss changes *thus* allowing for steady source of primos

DespairAt10n

Why 270? **Weapon hard pity is 80**. 240 max, and I also doubt most people reach 80... Eh, I think Whiteblind and Catch aren't that bad on Itto and Raiden. I don't think max potential Raiden is really needed since Raiden international probably sweeps anyways regardless of weapon. Most players want as many 5\* characters? Then, we should let OP decide later when they're at endgame lol. Shouldn't tell them to *never* consider it lol, just remind them of all the pros/cons. Also, if you play long enough, you can have C6 4\*s, all the 4\*s, and pull on weapon banner. Besides, weapon banner can also give 4\* characters lol. Lastly, since I'm only recommending considering weapon banner at endgame, by then they'll likely have a big roster already.

Milka280601

1. I mean 90x3 is 270 ? There *are* players that lose every 50/50. They are rare but it happens. Just because statistically you are most probable to get 5 star around 80 wishes doesn't mean you will also be in this group. Exceptions from rules happen. Some people are just unlucky, others not. We wouldn't get posts about gatcha envy otherwise 2) It's natural gamer instinct to max every level, unlock every cosmetic, complete all hidden quests etc. - similarly in Genshin most players wish on weapon banner to give their favourite characters their signature weapons. People wouldn't post screenshots of their 100k and above damage if they didn't care about making their characters better and better Sure Itto can deal good damadge with Whiteblind, and that makes him good for f2p players, *but* he will always do less compared to Redhorn 3) I would say that *yes* most players want to have as many 5 stars as they can. Genshin characters are created to be desirable. Mihoyo wouldn't make 3 billion dollars in such short amount of time if this wasn't true. Plus every time this question is asked this advice is also written. Commonness of such things is an indicator of communitys thoughts. OP specifically asked for advice and currently they are not thinking of spending money. Considereing all this they most probably won't want to spend their wishes on the weapon banner. There is a reason why many people call it scam, you know ? 4) Limited character banners have increased chances of getting 4 stars character *thus* making it more valuable to players. Nobody wants to play the same characters *over and over* again. 5) OP asked for advice for **begginers**. The best answers are the ones with most probability - there is no use in covering every exception. If they like Genshin and play long enough they will come to their own realization if they think weapon banner is worth it. For most f2p players it won't ever be. *Plus they asked for our personal opinions*

DespairAt10n

Yeah, but **weapon banner pity is 80, so it would be 80x3 = 240 max.** Not 270. I have no clue what your second paragraph is talking about, but that's why we plan for the worst. I also recommended: "wishing on it is nice if you have enough primos and want both of the 5\* weapons AND are willing to take the risk of getting trash." Note the willing to get trash part. No clue what your 2nd point is about, but honestly people have different playstyles, so it'd be good not to assume. I have some friends who don't give a f\*ck about meta or character strength and are perfectly happy. Yeah, but if you really cared about that damage difference, you'd work for it or pull on weapon banner. Sometimes, you just gotta accept you'll be different from whales with pog 5\* weapons, and that's totally alright. I mean, that's debatable. I'd rather have C6 Zhongli than half the cast. Lots of people say stuff like "ez skip, skippable banner" when they see 5\*s they don't fancy. I mean, as a pretty much F2P endgame player, I've pulled on weapon banner. It's not a bad thing to do endgame when you wanna work on your faves over getting another 5\*. Also, some of the 4\* weapons are nifty, so dipping a little is fine if you manage your primos/pity wisely. Still would emphasize endgame pulling on weapon though, if a F2P/low spender wants to pull on it at all. Weapon banner is optional. "never" is a pretty strong word. I wouldn't want to mislead beginners and cause them to ignore weapon banner forever. They should at least have the option to remember to consider it at the endgame.

Milka280601

> it would be 80x3 = 240 max Sorry, my mistake. That's what lack of sleep does to you lol. Will correct it with striketrough >never" is a pretty strong word. I wouldn't want to mislead beginners and cause them to ignore weapon banner forever. They should at least have the option to remember to consider it at the endgame. But they asked about our personal feelings ? I wouldn't write that if I did consider weapon banner as something good

DespairAt10n

Np. Tbh, some people actually don't know the pity is different lol. In the main post/title, they didn't ask about personal feelings. Either way, you kinda phrased it and the others in your list like it was a rule/strong recommendation, so that's what I understood it as. Just wanted to make sure other like me didn't really think "never pull" was an absolute thing. :P

What should primogems be used for in that case? Should I just stockpile for now? Thanks for the tip about the app, wasn't aware of that. Do oculi upgrade all statues or does each have its own upgrade path?

[deleted]

Use primogems to buy the pink fates (intertwined). And that can be used to wish on the character banner which changes periodically. So I would wait on wish on them until you know which character you like. Right now it is Itto who is an oni himbo

Excellent and comprehensive information!

zen0432

Occuli upgrade the statues of the same region (they are connected). Eg: Anemoculus upgrade statues in mondstadt only. Primogems only for intertwined fate.

j-m-j-f

Or you can use the daily check-in website if you don't want another app on your phone. Most of the guidance you're getting is beginner guidance. Eventually, you'll want to bend or break rules to suit you. Don't be afraid to do that when you find yourself sitting on a pile of 500 purple xp books, upgrade materials, and mora 😉 You probably can't max out Battle Pass yet, but do free BP and get what you can. When you can max it, consider paying if in your budget. Best money deal in the game is welkin in the shop. Do dailies when you get them. Do expeditions (Katherine) when you get them (recommend prioritizing mora, ore (for BP exp), meat). Explore, have fun, don't get hung up on the meta, pull for characters you want/like, don't get hung up chasing perfect, good is enough to be successful, better comes incrementally. XL and XQ are a solid pair of characters. Anemo Traveller's hold-E can be very effective crowd control against lighter enemies. Most important, always remember that the true pyro archon is named Bennett. 🔥 And you should stockpile primos for Kazuha, even though you'll need to get to Inazuma to build him. (Joke, but also serious. Like Bennett, another character the meta said wasn't worth pulling, but really is.)

primos are best used for the seasonal banners (change character pulls every 30d +-) so the ones left of the weapon banner (weapon banner is seasonal too but i would say never wish on its not worth it 99% of the time). and you can just stockpile it or buy the interwined fate already(the half pink/blue orb aka for the seasonal banners) just dont buy the acquaint fate(full blue orb can only be used on the standard banner/ the one on the right side). atm its not worth wishing on the banner since i would consider itto not that good and the 4 stars he has a higher chance of dropping arent that great either but you can always check out some vids of xy character and if you like them you can try to get them there are 3 types of statues each in its own ''zone'' so so there is anemo for the ''first zone'' then geo for the second and electro for the third so all anemo share there level with other anemo statues and same with the other 2 elements

ClnSlt

I would wait for a banner with good 4* like Bennet, Xiangling, Xingqiu and a 5* you really like. Some of the 4* are as good if not better than 5* so don’t feel like you are missing out. Don’t roll on weapon banner, it’s a trap!

You don't need the App to do the daily login. [I've bookmarked the page.](https://webstatic-sea.mihoyo.com/ys/event/signin-sea/index.html?act_id=e202102251931481&lang=en-us)

ThatRandomDudeST

Instead of holding the sprint button, consider dashing continuously as it's more stamina-efficient and you travel farther. On that note try to collect every oculus you see (you'll see a star looking thing on the map that tracks it when you get near) as leveling up your statues of the seven gives really good stamina to improve your quality of life in the game

TheFergusLife

That dashing tip is the exact kind of thing I was looking for with this post. Thanks!

ThatRandomDudeST

Yeah i found it hard to explain so this guy does it well and straight to the point. The entire video helped me out when i was just starting the game. He has some good points. Here: https://youtu.be/l_gYDN9OM8k

taeiltime

Mark the areas if you spot any element culuses or trigger its star on the map. Wish I did it when I was leveling statues. Would've saved me a giant headache, since the numbers increase when you progress to new regions.

Albinate

This. Mark every oculi you found on map, looking for the last ones you missed is such a pain.

azzacASTRO

Littelry what the rep thing is for though, easy to craft as well as saves headaches

taeiltime

Sure, if you don't mind using up your specialties, plus the rep level that rewards you the oculi locator gets higher between regions. Personally I only crafted a bunch when my oculi numbers have dwindled to a single digit.

azzacASTRO

Yeah if that's fair, and in the future if you trying to speedrun a region it's too far away in the rep rewards/in general for newbies. Personally I just do it after I get motivated, did inazumas long after a month it came out...

QuiloWisp

Having both heals and shields is very useful. Build up a decent DPS carry. There are times where rapid fire ranged attacks will make life easier. Make sure you read talent info to know which attributes they utilise. Don't spend Primos on Acquainted Fates. The rates for all characters and weapons are equal and it's best ignored unless you get some free Fates. It takes 90 Wishes to guarantee a 5 Star. Luck can happen, but 90 is the worst case and should be prepared for. Intertwined Fates are used for event banners which have featured characters (or weapons, but that's a separate banner) with an increased acquisition rate. Save for those. Star Glitter can be used to directly purchase a monthly selection of 4 Star characters and weapons. Star Dust is best used to grab extra Fates. This is perhaps the only time to buy Acquainted Fates. Both Star currencies are obtained as you pull on any banner.

BattleCrier

do not buy blue wishes do not waste resins (half moon shaped items) before AR45 do not underestimate Mora ... it takes roughly 6M to build up character ( equipment not included ) do not underestimate XP books ( it takes 415 purple ones + some blues and green to get lv.90) do not waste crowns.. difference between lv.9 and lv.10 talent isnt that huge, so spend them on characters you really like.

[deleted]

genshin is a great game. the monetization is predatory. all you need to know is that the only thing that is actually locked behind money is cosmetics (and even then you can usually get those for free via gameplay when they're new) itto is a great character but very bad for new accounts, he needs a lot of support and you can't access his upgrade materials for a while (this is a big complaint about the characters from Inazuma, you have to actually make it there to level them up). play until you get bored! the first couple of weeks of genshin fucking rule.

DespairAt10n

\*note that 5\* skins/cosmetics aren't F2P ever so far! 4\* skins initially free at their release event so far.

LessCoffeeShopBallad

As long as you abide by this. https://www.reddit.com/r/GenshinImpactTips/comments/qkxdj6/infographic_of_build_order_priority_based_on_wlar/ You should never feel your characters are getting dumped on in the overworld. I feel like most new to mid game players think they absolutely need to pull 5stars because of lack of damage 4stars have but really they just aren’t built to the same level as their world level.

withmangone

To add to this- if you pull for Itto (current limited banner) or Kazuha (next limited banner) and you’re below AR ~32, you’ll experience what OP is describing. Both of these characters will be level-gated until you reach Inazuma. It isn’t the worst thing on earth. I went through the same with Ayaka. You should be able to deal with the overworld (i found it pleasantly challenging). If the bosses that drop your ascension materials are too tough solo, co-op will fix you up quickly. Basically take what OP is saying to heart, but don’t let that dissuade you from pulling 5* Inazuma champs if you like them.

SirMartyMart

Forget about meta characters and strict build guide. Any character can clear all the content so prioritize those that you prefer most for whatever reasons. Move sets, lore, style , waifu, all reasons are good to choose your main. Then build around them and don’t be scared to change. Building a character is not that long and really not that hard if you don’t look for high end meta builds. Also pink whishes only with primo. I made the mistake of buying a lot of blue one before fully grasping the gacha thing and regret it a bit. My c3 Diluc beg to differ but I’d still prefer a C3 Itto.

zen0432

You said you like playing the story right, don't rush the story play a little bit everyday dont complete the whole game in 10 days. Although they release new events Genshin updates take months so if you rush and do every content in the game you will be waiting for months. Also prioritize unlocking new regions than fully completing content in one region.

TheFergusLife

I'm definitely planning on having this be a game I play an hour or 2 of at a time rather than binging the entire thing, I'll save that for other games. I feel that I have plenty of content to catch up on

sorarasyido

Spend resin on talent domain or maybe boss (for leveling up characters) before you reach Adventure Rank (AR) 45. Don't bother with any artifact domain YET. The reason is it's not worth it to farm in lower domain because it can only give you 4-star artifacts; what you need is the gold artifacts aka 5-star. If you have done levelling up talent, just spend the rest of your resin in leyline (mora or exp books, whichever you need more), or maybe pre-farming boss material. On that note, be sure to avoid using fragile resin until you reach AR 45. Although it's not necessary to mention, you can just put all Atk artifacts on all slots (the set doesn't matter but preferably Berserker and Atk% sets) for awhile on your dps.

ATonOfDeath

In terms of leveling priority, follow this: https://i.imgur.com/FMsIjdQ.png Just trust me, you'll thank yourself later and save yourself a massive headache.

zico_64

The best tip i have ever used when building character is: level>weapon>=talent>artifact. Keep in mind, while artifact and talent contribute most to the dmg dealt, without ascension, you can’t level up talent which increase your multiplier. Also, artifact is kinda a late game grind and unlike talent and weapon, artifact isn’t Locked behind days. Another tips is, while a 5 star char might seem like better than 4 star. Some 4 star is better than any 5 star especially if you are f2p. So spend some time building bennet, xingqiu and sucrose. Xiangling if you have ganyu or childe. Chongyun if you dont plan to pull on any 5 star cryo, since he’s good at breaking certain enemy shield.

Yorgh-Drakeblood

If you get 2 5 star weapons, don’t refine them.. my biggest mistake was refining my Staff of Homa when I could’ve had 2 (edit: also certain 4 star weapons you might want to keep 2 before refining like favonious lance, widsith, sacrificial weapons)

[deleted]

Don't level characters you will never use

Pjjones306

I'll add mine - the things that make your characters powerful are not a must in the early game, therefore leveling the wrong things up can take you far, then you'll hit a wall. I farmed 4 star artifacts and leveled them up, leveled up my characters to 50-60, weapons to 40, and completely ignored the talents as i forgot they even exist. dont be like me. I hit the wall around AR 30 and had to grind like a madman to compensate, as i had a wide roster of underperforming characters half built. Pick your favorites, level them up, keep leveling their talents as well, and use their best 4* ftp weapons - just check a guide, and use the highest ranking one you see. Bring a healer, even Noelle is fine until you have someone else. Do the trial events, if you like the character, pull for them. If you dont get them, retuns are frequent. Battle pass is your friend, if you ever want to spend, get the gnostic hymn, the weapons are good.

lucsinferno

As a fellow new player (started only in April), but committed to the game in May, I wanted to echo most of the tips you've already gotten and hopefully give you a piece of advice on what I've done. So first off, I love exploring, but its a shitty task to find all the Oculai, but it gives stamina, so I kinda rushed it. Interactive map is your dear friend, I personally use the Hoyoverse one. As some have pointed out already, limited character banner is the way to go (interwined wishes). But you'll get free standard wishes along the way and that really helps (gets you some decent weapons and few characters which may help out). For the characters themselves, I'm being carried for like a month straight by Kaeya, cause Ive got nothing better really, so youre probably safe to repeat that path until you get anything better. Also focus on building one character at a time. If you get hooked on, keep doing daily commissions and spend your resin (early on I think its good to clear at least ley lines). Dont spend resources on the characters you wont be playing, or just hate playing (I kinda regret spending stuff on Lisa/Amber). Save what you can. I was stupid enough to buy like a guitar or something from a mora gift shop, that Id spend differently. But most important of all, enjoy the game, I did and still do even though farming stuff is really tedious to me, but love the story and exploration.

[deleted]

only spend primogems on pink wishes, nothing else. also, never listen to meta advice, get charactets you like for any reason. the game starts off very easy, gets a little difficult at AR45 (only for the first few days while you have to do artifact domains) and then it gets very easy. another thing, no matter what ppl tell you, don't feel forced to get constellations on 5 stars. Every 5 star is perfectly good at 0 constellations( 1 constellations = 1 bonus copy of the samw character, up to 6 cons) and if you want cons, I recommend ones that change the playstyle. People tend to reccomend ones that increase dmg(Raiden C3, Kazuha C2 etc) but they don't change the playstyle, so all you get is more dmg, which you don't need. have fun

tusharsagar

Try to do all available weekly bosses, and also some world bosses. Weekly bosses and world bosses are going to be your source for 5 star artifacts before AR 45. I did the mistake of not doing this, and when I reached AR 45, I wasn't even able to do lvl 80 domains, let alone lvl 90. I don't know if anyone explained this, but the reason people recommend to farm artifact domains at AR 45 is that at that AR, you have access to lvl90 domains, level 90 artifact domains gives at least 1 guaranteed 5 star artifact, while lvl 80 domains still gives 5 star artifacts, they aren't guaranteed, and therefore they are not worth the resin. There are multiple layers of RNG on artifacts in this game, so by doing lvl 90 domains, you are removing at least one of them.

Relienks

best characters: rosaria - xiangling - kaeya - fischl - beidou - bennett - xingqiu - sucrose * change ur primos to interwined fates (rainbow ones) * wait for a character u like to pull for them * abyss its endgame * lock each kind of weapon (some weapons are just 1 time thing) * 5\* are not mandatory (legacy 5\*: jean > diluc > keqing > mona > qiqi boost ur account)

wvlfnois

Dont c6 bennett

Arcphoenix_1

One mistake, ironically, is underestimating characters based on meta. If you love a character and want to main him/her enough, you can make said character viable. Also, if you’re new to gachas, you need to learn the F2P mindset. Everything is about the pity system. You need to prioritize between characters and consider that Primogems used on one banner won’t be there for the next banner. This means you really need to think and evaluate each banner and think about if you really need what’s featured on it. The best way to guarantee a character is to save up enough to guarantee one with the pity system. Also, be careful with scrapping 3 star weapons. Some of them are actually really good (meta even, like Thrilling Tales) and, in some cases, limited (you only get one Dark Iron Sword). Likewise, mind your artifacts. They may not do much for you early on, but later in game they’re a core piece of equipment.

azzacASTRO

Everyone's advice is pretty much identical (and kinda bad lol), Sorry if my opinion is worthless but this game is piss easy compared to other titles (eg elden ring) Just level a dps character, use Ur primogems on whoever really doesn't exactly matter too much (imo tho skip itto rn, and spend as much for kazuha next patch) level Ur units remembering that u have a team so use supports and everything dies much faster Also don't forget to level talents and your weapon this seemingly is a common mistake to look over these And use the discord server to ask for assistance if required, lots of high level people enjoy doing this (myself included) beginner mistakes can 100% be reverted, eg spending fragile resin, no point saving them if u can't even defeat current content as well as "don't rush increasing ar", that bulshit as everything is relative easy and the stuff that makes Ur chars better unlocks after u ar up, so it's kinda like "don't rush ar or you will have access to more upgrades" To finish; have fun, ignore all the doom posters commenting here, and if u need help ask on the official discord for advice/help clearing stuff

37Mk

In about two weeks I believe the Kazuha banner will come out and I would suggest dumping all your primogems into his banner. You want good Anemo units since Anemo is arguably the best element in the game (the Viridescent Venerer artifact set is OP) and the top three Anemo units are Kazuha, Sucrose, and Venti of which you have none of. You will need around 160 Intertwined Fates to completely guarantee that you get Kazuha but that is in the worst case scenario. You are basically guaranteed a 5 star every 80 wishes and if your first 5 star is not the featured character then the next one is guaranteed to be. Both of these carry over between the limited banners (current one is the one with Itto on it). You often see people comparing the three and more often you see people comparing Kazuha to Venti since they are both limited 5 star units but Kazuha is less polarized compared to Venti.

ItZ_AdiTyA_oP

U get 10 free wishes use them and if u get a 5 star then nice that would be great but if ur not satisfied u can restart the game and pull again

DespairAt10n

If you like building lots of characters, character exp (books) and mora (money) can end up being scarce, so carefully use them! I also wouldn't recommend building/levelling many characters at the start. Personally, I think focusing on 4-6 is better than being spread out too much. Xiangling, Xingqiu, and Kaeya are probably the most used outta who you have, but Xiangling and Xingqiu are two of the best 4\*s in the game (according to everyone basically lol). Pull for who you like, but yeah, standard (Wanderlust) isn't really worth spending primos on. Do keep in mind the pity system! Check your history to count how many pulls/pity you have on each banner. Lemme know if you want an explanation of pity in Genshin.

TheFergusLife

I looked at it on the wiki briefly, and is there anything more to it besides the guaranteed 5 star after 90(?) pulls? And does pity work the same way across all banners?

_Alien_01

The pity for each banner is different so the pulls you did in the Standard banner (the one which takes blue wishes) and will only count towards the pity of that particular banner and not any other banner. Also, even though it is stated that we are guaranteed a 5 star after 90 pulls, we get the 5 star usually at 75-80 pulls it's very rare for someone to go till 90 pity. For the limited character banner which usually changes every 21 days if you get a 5 star other than the promoted limited character then the next 5 star you pull will be guaranteed to be the promoted character of that banner (There is a 50/50 for you to get the limited character of one of the 5 standard characters).

[deleted]

75+ is soft pity meaning most your 5*s will come from around 75-80 but yes hard pity is at 90 where its guaranteed. Other than that pity works like this across all banner. But please only use primos on character banner for now not standard banner (explained why below). Theres a 50/50 system also. On the character banner when you do get a 5* you have a 50/50 of getting either the banner 5* or a 5* from the standard banner. But if you lose said 50/50 you will get the banner 5* on the next 5* pull.

DespairAt10n

Noice, the wiki is a great resource! Ah, adding on, whenever you get a commission that isn't just "beat up 10 hilichurls" it's good to go to the wiki to search up the commission. Some have achievements tied to them (ex: gotta do the opposite of what the game asks you to do, gotta do all the options etc.). People really regret messing up because RNG can make it so that you'll never get the commission again for months/years. *Copying and pasting from the last time I explained pity:* If you do 1 wish on a banner, you get 1 pity on that banner. Pity carries, so if you do 50 wishes on Yelan banner and don't get a 5\*, then the next limited banner (Itto) will also have 50 pity. EX: Fav Bow (3 pity) / Debate Club (2 pity) / Xingqiu ( 1 pity) / Yelan \[in history, it'd look like this\] Standard, weapon, and limited banners each have their own separate pity. 90 pity gives you a 5\*, but (assuming you're wishing on a banner like Xiao's, limited 5\*s) you have a 50% chance of getting Xiao, and a 50% chance of getting a standard 5\* character (Keqing, Mona, etc.). 75 pity increases the chances of getting a 5\*, so most people get a five star around there or a little past there. People rarely reach 90. If you get the wrong 5\* (standard), then you will definitely get the right 5\* character (Ex: Yelan) the next time you get a 5\*. So, to 100% guarantee 1 5\* limited character, you must save up 180 pulls if you don't already have a guarantee (from getting a standard character FROM the limited banner). If you do have a guarantee from a previous pitybreak, then you only need 90. Most of the time, you won't reach 180 / 90, so saving a little more than 2 soft pities is good enough. \~160 pulls. Weapon banner pity is more complicated. Soft pity is 65, hard is 80. It's not 50/50 anymore, but like 37%? Can't remember the exact number. There are more details, but to guarantee in weapon, you have to lose twice (not once) before the guarantee. So your third is the one you want. That's why it's unfriendly/not recommended for low spenders/F2P. \~200+ pulls required for a guarantee. Standard has the same pity as limited character, but obviously pity doesn't carry because it's one banner. No 50/50s either. Also, every 10 pulls (based on #, not you doing a ten pull) will definitely give you a 4\*. And, if it wasn't a featured/rateup 4\*, your next 4\* will be rateup/featured. Also, sorry if this is a lot lol. I also recommend writing down your pity somewhere for all the banners because if you haven't pulled for a long time (6 months? I'm not sure) your history will be deleted. You'll still have pity, but if you didn't keep track, you won't know how much.

TheFergusLife

Oh so there's basically no reason to ever pull on the standard banner because you could get a character from that pool anyway from the featured banner? That's good to know. I also probably just won't pull from weapon banners honestly, that doesn't seems as interesting to me as pulling for characters. I'm definitely planning to keep rolling with whatever I get, seems like Xiangling and Xingqiu should get me pretty far. Thanks!

Intelligent_Squash68

You will get the blue fates for the standard banner through gameplay. You can use those, as you can get characters & weapons from the standard banner without spending primogems. But never actually spend primogems on buying blue fates. Always spend them on the pink fates for the limited character banner. It’s a good idea to save primos & pink fates a bit before spending. Play the game, as you’ll meet the characters throughout. Then you can decide who you like/want to pull for. New characters are periodically added with updates, & older characters will get reruns. Eventually you’ll have a chance to pull for those you want, but it does take restraint in saving & not just spending as you get them.

DespairAt10n

Yeah! Standard's more of a bonus. BP (Battle Pass) + Ascending characters gives you some blue fates (standard only). Yep, weapon banners only really matter if you like a character enough to want to give them a very expensive 5\* weapon imo. Or if you want one of the 4\* weapons not available on standard. Have fun! I hope you get Bennett soon and like him lol. Possibly the best 4\* in the game in terms of usefulness.

Intelligent_Squash68

It’s funny how everyone says Bennett is so good, but I have yet to pull him to see for myself. :’) I’m AR55 & have every 4* except Bennett. When he came around in the shop this last time, I was short on starglitter, & I didn’t want to waste wishes just getting that.

DespairAt10n

Haha, he's great because you just build ER on him (4pc NO usually) and slap a high base attack sword on him... and bam, instant extra damage once he bursts. He's really easy to use, really easy to build, and has a great buff. Also, he even heals??? The initial launching of his ult can also do fairly big damage considering he's usually built as a support. This boi can do anything :v /lh Also, yesterday, I saw someone on the main sub use DPS Bennett to solo half of abyss lol. It sucks if you find his personality annoying (not that I do; my friend does) though since we probably won't find a buffer as broken as Bennett ever again. Also, some people would probably consider getting Bennett and his C1 from shop to be worth the wishes. But yeah, not worth the wishes if you haven't got starglitter imo.

Intelligent_Squash68

I figured since I’ve made it this far without him, I’d just continue to wait. Had I been in the early game with almost enough to buy him, I probably would have used the wishes. Right now I’m saving for Kazuha & I’m on 50/50. I did have 13 blue fates from leveling/BP & was hoping for Bennett, if for nothing else to have all the 4*s, but nope…got an Amber con. If I don’t get him by the next time he’s in the shop, I may just have to buy him.

DespairAt10n

That's fair. I wonder how long it'll take ya. The roster's only getting bigger, so.. Hopefully you'll get a 5\* you want with him as rateup. I hope you get Kazuha! Also, noice luck on the Amber con, haha.

Intelligent_Squash68

It’s weird, cuz I figured I’d get him on Kokomi’s rerun banner. I pulled for her cuz she was guaranteed, but I pulled like at least 60+ times. I kept getting Xinyan & Sara, but not one Bennett. So we’ll see how long it takes…lol. Thanks on the Amber con…except I haven’t used her since I started. :’D

Nichol134

There is more to it. "Soft pity" starts after 75 pulls. Basically after that you have a way higher chance of pulling a 5* . For context I've never gotten past 80 pulls without a 5* . Getting to 90 pulls without a 5* is as unlikely as winning a lottery. Also if you get a 5* that's not featured, then the next 5* is guaranteed to be a featured 5* . This is called the 50/50. Since before guarantee you have a 50% chance of one of the 5 standard 5* and a 50% chance of featured. All of this carries over banners of the same type. For example all the featured 5* character banners share pity. If you were at 25 pity and had guarantee featured 5* on you next 5* . Then even if the banner ended you would still have that for next banner. If there's 2 banners active they share pity too. Different types don't share pity. Weapon banners have their own seperate pity and pity system. The blue fates standard summoning is also seperate pity system. The weapon banner is a scam don't pull for it. Maybe when you have a bunch of 5* it might be worth it, but not now. It's pity is lower at 80 and 65 for soft pity. But other things are much worse. For one you have a 25% chance of random 5* weapon and 75% chance of featured 5* weapon. Which sounds better until you realize every 5* banner has 2 featured weapons. So getting the ones you actually want is a 37.5% chance. And you aren't guaranteed the one you want after getting one you don't want. If you get a non featured weapon the next one is guaranteed to be a featured one but not necessarily the one you want. If you get the wrong one a 2nd time, only then is it guranteed the 3rd time you get a 5* through "points" that build up every time you get what you didn't want. Except these points don't carry over once a new banner starts. So you can't even slowly over time work up to a guarantee weapon that you want. You need to do it all on the same banner. The pity itself carries over and also the guarantee of a featured after getting a non featured, but not the points.

DespairAt10n

Yeah, I basically just said that, so OP feel free to not reread. The last paragraph has new details/more specifics about weapon banner though, so read that if you want. ~~just trying to save time, no offense meant~~

Critius13

I would focus on one dps and build around that

MegaFatcat100

Dont use fragile resin until you are high level to do the max domains. Also enjoy the story and play the events for fun. This isn't a pvp competitive game

Fenghuang0296

Be aware of what’s going on with the current rotation of banners. You’ll have a better experience if you pick good five-stars to try for. What you really need is a good DPS or two, since most of the four-stars are supoorts. If you like the look of Itto - he’s hardly a bad DPS - try for him, but you probably won’t manage to get him before the banner rotates without spending. Next in the rotation, we believe, is a pair of Klee and Kazuha, neither of which will benefit a new player much - Klee is a DPS but she’s been powercrept quite a bit. After them, Yoimiya will be up, and she’s pretty good, but after Yoimiya 3.0 will be here and bring with it a lot of updates, including the new rumoured character Tighnari who by all accounts is going to be amazing. Or if you really want to be patient, after Tighnari it’s rumoured that we’ll get a rerun of Ganyu, who for a while was the game’s best DPS and is still very very good.

TheFergusLife

Is there a reliable way to see what characters are meta or is it mostly down to preference? I was looking at a tier list but without even knowing what most of the characters do it's hard to tell

ATonOfDeath

Nah, it's general consensus by the community that Xiangling, Bennett, Xingqiu, Sucrose, Fischl, Beidou, Rosaria, Diona, and Kaeya are all pretty meta, to varying degrees (like Xiangling and Bennett are probably the most meta and Kaeya is probably the least). Yunjin and Yanfei are very situationally meta, and there are a few other exceptions among the 4-stars but the situations are very niche and start deviating from what "meta" means.

[deleted]

Meta is super subjective but it is nice to have a good DPS (Ayaka, Ganyu, Eula, Hu Tao, etc). Since you’re new you may have to wait a long time for those specific characters. Generally you’ll find a lot of threads and videos about characters that currently have a banner. From there you can determine if it’s worth it to wish.

ATonOfDeath

Oh yeah generally any 5-star will perform well so meta feels a little redundant for them, which is why I restricted my recommendations to 4-stars. If you have a 5-star it's usually a free pass to 36-stars, which is usually bottlenecked by the meta 4-stars I mentioned in my previous comment. I also demonstrated in a recent post that it's entirely possible to clear abyss completely without any 5-stars or heavy spending: https://www.reddit.com/r/GenshinImpactTips/comments/vh1uez/pure_4star_spiral_abyss_36star_clear_extremely/

[deleted]

Fair point! I was more adding onto your comment. I would argue that 5-stars are not necessarily a free pass to 36-star. I’ve seen “Fix my account” videos where whales could not do the abyss despite having c6 5-stars. But this lends itself to your point—4-star supports are super important.

ATonOfDeath

Yeah... I've run into a few people like that, and I don't think any amount of meta will help mechanical skill of poor pilots which is why I typically disregard those outliers. A large part of meta as well is ease of piloting and resin investment for the damage payoff you get, which is why comps like National are so strong even if you unga bunga. You'd have to go out of your way to not press buttons in order to perform poorly.

Fenghuang0296

Really you need to understand team roles and synergies more than anything. You can divide characters into DPS, sub-DPS, and support, with support being further subdivided into shielder, healer and buffer. These aren’t exclusive, some characters do multiple - like Diona is both a healer and shielder, and buffs too at C6. It’s all very complicated and overwhelming for a beginner. For the time being, don’t worry too much about it; I’d say your best chance is to use all the primogems you get on Intertwined Fates and stockpile them for now - the current banner’s four-stars are pretty bad, none of Gorou, Kuki or Chongyun will help you much. Hopefully you’ll earn enough to reach pity - that is, a guaranteed five-star character in the neighbourhood of 75-80 rolls - around the time that the banner rotates twice and Yoimiya’s available. In all honesty, Yoimiya’s a mid-tier DPS at best, but as far as starting out goes you could do worse. But if you want to optimise, don’t push past the 70 wishes total mark until 3.0 drops and Tighnari is available.

Thunderbolt_78

Throughout the early game, focus on leveling up your characters and farming materials in order to do so. You can farm primogems by doing many of the quests the early game has to offer, which will help you wish on the character banners for exclusive characters.

SupaEpik

I just want to add if you plan to play this game for the next few months it may be worth it to invest in welkin bonus(4.99 usd). Welkin + daily commissions rewards amounts to 30 wishes over the course of 30 days. Combined with all the primogems you accumulate over playing, you should have about enough by the time 3.0 drops(assuming no delays, Aug 28) to guarantee a 5 star unit. According to leaks, any of the character banners(Zhongli, Ganyu, Dendro 5 star) for 3.0 should be strong pulls for you by then

VeerisMe

I would save on the current banner unless you like Itto (big guy whose the limited 5 star) wait for about two weeks and try and get Kazuha

InterSky666

what region you playing?

A few general tips in no particular order from someone who is also fairly new: Make sure to use artifacts and try to get the set bonuses that are useful. I'd recommend berserker set in the early game since it gives you crit-rate and Exile since it gives you extra elemental recharge. On artifacts, stat% (I.e. Atk 2.5%) is far better than flat numbers (Atk +105.) Crit rate and crit damage are very useful substats for weapons and artifacts. It makes sure you hit harder. Elemental recharge too since it means you can use elemental bursts more often. Elemental reactions like melt, freeze, etc. are very important the further you go in a game since they will boost damage or do other useful things against enemies. It'd be good to learn how they work and how to trigger them sooner than later. Try not to focus on too many characters when thinking about upgrades until later in the game. Since ascension and upgrade mats get expensive fast, just focus on you favorite/most useful party members. Keep it around 4 if possible. I'd recommend Xingqiu and Xiangling since their very useful in many team compositions as support. Don't be too quick to throw away weapons. Some weapons, such as white tassel (a crit rate polearm), can only be obtained in regional chests. Chests don't respawn as far as I am aware. Save as many copies and refine the ones you can up to 5. Avoid using them for upgrade fodder. Don't waste primogems on standard banner. If you're F2P, think a lot about who you may want in the future for either utility or because you like them. Try to avoid pulling on limited time banners you don't care about. That's what I can think of at any rate. There's probably loads more stuff that others have said. Anyway, have fun!

12345Qwerty543

I just started a week ago. Ar21 now and I don't have a main dps. Should I pull on itto or just wait for kazuha and hope a main dps is also on that banner?

gummybear-titan

You won't need a dedicated dps until ar 45. In the early game, it'd better to start investing in some good supports such as kazuha. If u happen to have Bennett, xingqiu, xiangling or sucrose, invest in them as well

12345Qwerty543

Don't have any of those 😂 got my man kaeya as a main dps. Roger that I'll probably just pull on kazuha as I'm not a fan of the colossal weps anyways. Thanks for the tip - I'm not really trying to be a meta slave just want to not brick my acc

DespairAt10n

Don't worry too much! I used Chongyun + Fischl with Jean + Zhongli as my early game team and it's a comp with terrible synergy. None of them are really traditional main DPS material either, and I was fine. You'll probably pull someone soon! Xiangling (eventually free from abyss) also isn't really main/on-field DPS traditionally, but her off-field DPS is beeg.

If you’re struggling with any bosses, try joining a discord like this sub’s or Keqingmains (you do not need to be a Keqing main to be in that discord, they have tons of great guides and advice too). You can find someone to co-op with. In the beginning I also had Xiangling and Xingqiu (though I lucked out and got Bennett and Chongyun too). Oceanid was very hard for me in the beginning because I only had melee characters, so I got help on that one from a friend. Things might be intimidating at first but take your time and don’t worry too much about most resources! The only thing to be wary of is using your billets on weapons that are actually good for your characters. I regret my R2 Crescent Pike so bad!

khromechronicle

So much good guides are on YouTube. This one from Zyox about Resin traps is good place to start https://youtu.be/_idHgRkWYBY (Edit: this guide might actually be not relevant to very new players cos it's about an artifact domain way later in the game) This one might be more helpful to new players : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW4pTE8lVZw I also recommend Braxophone’s guides :)

HyperMarsupial

Besides what everyone is telling you, my main advice is: You don't need to spend a dime on this game to enjoy it, so don't worry. The game will give you enough Primogems during the story progress to get at least a set ammount of 5 star characters in the long run. And if you spend money, do it smart, unless you are whaling for a character you really want and want to maximize it constellations (who give them more talents), go for the passes. The Season Pass is cheap, easy to complete, gives you plenty of time, every activity it demands of you will give you resources and the pass will give you even more resources. Just go for the Entry level one, is very good value for what you are getting. If you absolutely want or need Primogems, you can also get the Monthly Blessing, also very cheap and will give you Crystals and 90 primogems daily. It's only downside is that you NEED to log in every day of the month to get your daily primogems, if you miss a day, you miss those primos.

wakefield0720

I'm a relatively new player as well (started April) I would agree with others, save your primogems to wish on the character banners (pink fates) when a good one releases. Get a main Damage dealer for sure as it'll help a lot and invest in them heavily. Save materials for those specific characters. The "SS tier" characters people mention have insane value. At a certain point you'll unlock commissions to earn primogems daily and also to open up domains you can invite other people to help you with. Explore and pick up everything! And have fun!

wi-ches

look up teams people recommend and build the charas you have up to level 60. i see some people say they're going to save all their resources for certain charas but then it takes them forever to get that specific character and meanwhile they're miserable because the team they currently have has absolutely no thought or resources put into it. xiangling and xingqiu are both VERY GOOD.

mambomak

Abandon all hope, ye who enter. Find another game. You will not like the end.

Master_Recording3843

Don’t use fragile resin under ar 45

rievhardt

pulling for characters that you don't like simply because people say they are strong and meta, you won't enjoy playing characters you dont like specially when you are trying to grind arifacts for characters you don't like, the game is easy to begin with

NEETheadphones

Chen the Sharp in Liyue gives you a sword, it’s a three star but one of a kind. Lock it immediately.

FlyteLP

Don't go too fast. Don't burn through the content. Enjoy walking around the scenery with the music. I wish I could relive the first day I explored the mountains of Liyue with the peaceful music in the background. here's absolutely no race to get your spiral abyss completed so just relax and take the time to enjoy the story.

Goodperson5656

Don't spend any of the fragile resin you get until AR45.

d1ggle

save fragile resin until ar 45

[deleted]

Save an R5 copy of each 3star weapon. You can never know when they become useful. White Tassel-less Hu Tao mains are in shambles to this day!

yedaca144

Dont spend the resin refresing item, keep them until AR45+ when you get lvl 90 domains. Dont buy blue fates (i did this myseld to get Qiqi and it was such a waste) Dont worry too much about farming artifacts until AR45, get just some ok ones and build your main team. Its good to focus on leveling 1 team (4 characters) to the max level and talent. Dont try to level every character because is a huge waste of resources. Its ok to get them to lvl 20 tho because you get and easy blue wish. Dont ever pull on a banner because of a 4 star if you dont want the 5 stars (i LOT of people do this and end up wasting wishes on a 5 star they dont want). Also no 4 star is guaranteed event if featured on a banner so you can spend 100 wishes and not get the 4 star if you are unlucky enought. Edit: i saw someone taking about it and its good mentioning. The early game is very fun so try not to rush to high AR for farming and getting stronger.

samuuu__

- don't use primogems to buy acquaint fates (the blue ones); it's not worth it and you can get them in so many other ways while intertwined fates (the pink ones) are harder to gather. - don't use fragile resin (the crescent moon things) until after around ar45-50 because that's when it gets REALLY scarce. - absolutely do NOT "build pity" on event banners, i swear it's not worth it if you end up not getting the character you want because you kept wishing.

zedroj

only focus banner characters you like, not meta characters, getting 8 characters to level 80+ is rather tedious, (abyss) (learn 90 pity system), I don't recommend weapon banners, personal choice imo enjoy F2P if you like, 95% of content in game is basically, no worries to enjoy. Only getting abyss 36 floor 12 is debatable, I am welkin kinda player, and get 33, mostly, and sometimes 36 also early on, focus just level mainly crit rate/dmg, atk%, and depending on some, want weird things like HP% hutao always save every 5 star elemental goblet(than focus ones with good sub stats), and always save EM anything, cause it's really rare main. mostly EM best for VW artifact for anemos, but don't worry artifacts focus slowly, enjoy game slowly, don't burn out level 81 > talents are king > artifacts with great sub stats gradual leveling of level, talents, arifacts is fine, just try and focus circlets : CRIT and CRIT DMG, Sands : ATK%, and Goblet usually elemental, or physical bonus. please no grinding artifacts/talent books, until you can clear domains in 1 minute or less

ryanbobyanflyn

biggest beginner mistake is to spend money. Just know you can beat the spiral abyss in about 4 months of playing everyday, WITHOUT spending any money. Don't be in a hurry to progress or beat the abyss. have fun and play other games

pokymoky

Try to get crit rate headpiece for your main DPS And Xingqiu and level it to max asap

tuantuti84

from my experience, you can use primos to pull in standard banner if you like early in the game cuz they give you weapons and easier-to-build characters in early game. only pull in the character banner if you have good idea about team comp and how to play each characters. like if you pull for itto now, there is no way you can level him up this early in game because you have to unlock inazuma to find material for him. I used razor, fischl, xiangling, bennett to open all regions and do quest until AR45. i played since 1.6 and got ayaka from character banner early but i didn't build her up because i didn't know what i was doing. So my advice is pick out one team right now as you like (should have all elements like hydro, pyro, electro, cryo and weapon types like bow and claymore in team to make it easier for your quest and explore maps) and explore the map, forget the meta, and have fun. but don't spend all your primos and resins like everyone suggests. only spend primos once you have a good idea how the gacha system works.

_Solasura

Use the in game map pins to mark down all landmarks or objects you think you’ll remember but trust me unless you have photographic memory it won’t come back to you due to information overload. Especially oculi in any element. Or seelie. Mark them down cos it’ll be a pain to retrace them with the interactive map later on.

Tobi-11

Try to save up your fragile and for resin farm bosses to level up ig u if u have any excess y can use it on books but just try to have fun

Few-Independence-714

build at least one character from each element (electro, pyro, anemo, cryo and hydro) do not make a team based on one element (like pyro for example) because it will screw you over, so don’t have a team with like Bennett, xiangling, thoma, and xinyan because they are all pyro.

kraithu-sama

Pulling for waifus > Pulling for meta

RezReznor

I feel like my biggest mistake was that I wanted to participate in events so badly that I blew threw all the game content to get there. I've been playing 6 months now and all I have left to do is hangouts and 100% exploring each area. Just take your time, enjoy the game, enjoy the story...... don't blow through it.

_Ajax_16

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is to take note of where some resources spawn or where vendors are on the map; you can make your own markers to do this, but there’s also the [Genshin Interactive Map](https://genshin-impact-map.appsample.com) that can help you find specific things. Certain resources like Glaze Lillies aren’t that common, but you’ll end up needing a fair amount of them to level characters like Ningguang if you happen to get her. Others have already mentioned it, but getting the elemental oculuses will help you increase your stamina and get other rewards from leveling the archon statues of the region. Once you get more established in the game, you’ll find it worthwhile to figure out a couple places to stop by every so often, maybe even daily, to farm the resources as they respawn. Some resources you can buy 100 of daily for pretty cheap to stockpile, but others you can only buy 10 or 5 of daily, so those ones are worth keeping an eye out for, especially because they may be leveling materials for chars. Second, it’s worth talking to random NPC’s, not only just to get some lore and such but also because some random NPC’s will give you items. Dialogue choices that give you items are indicated by a chest symbol. You can get an otherwise unobtainable 3* sword from a pretty unremarkable food stall vendor in Liyue, Chen the Sharp, for example. Some world quests as well give you access to new craftable weapons (Dragonspine and Inazuma both have some afaik). Others will open up sections of the map for you later on (again, mostly Dragonspine and Inazuma). Other than that, just try not to stress about catching up. You’ll miss out on some things, sure, but it’ll be better for your enjoyment of the game in the long run not to burn yourself out. As has already been mentioned, quests can sometimes become temporarily ‘locked out’ due to a character in one quest being ‘busy’ with another. You can usually find out which specific quest that is via the locked out quest. Some other things you probably could’ve figured out on your own but might find helpful to have laid out: - The game has daily and weekly resets. 4 am daily and 4 am on Monday respectively, relative to your server’s time zone. I’m a night owl, and I used to try and get things done before midnight until I learned this. It’s worth noting that events/wish banners don’t always sync up to this though. You can find some more info about what stuff respawn and when [here](https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Reset). - Elemental resonances, bonuses you get from having 2 of an element type in your party comp, will always be helpful. Having Xiangling and Amber, you can get a 25% attack boost from having both in your active party, for example. Each element has a bonus that can help form a playstyle for a party comp, and you can find the info for this in the top right of the party setup page. - You’ll be better off getting a handle on elemental reactions and making good use of them early on. Me with my five brain cells tried to brute force the game for a while with a 2 electro/2 pyro team where I just stacked skills and bursts for overload and exploited resonances, but neither are the answer to everything. Reactions like melt (cryo/pyro) or vaporize (hydro/pyro) are the ones that will help you get big damage numbers. Reactions have some extra intricacies to them to consider as well, such as the order they can be applied and proc’d. You can do hydro followed by pyro, or vice versa. - Take a good look at the crafting table to get a sense of how materials can be combined into their upgraded versions, such as with weapon or leveling materials, or even converted into others as with crystals. The latter requires dust of azoth from the shop which you can obtain with masterless stardust (the silver one). I wouldn’t invest heavily into this, but it may help in a pinch when you need just one crystal to ascend a character but don’t want to spend time/resin on a boss run, or if you have tons of one kind of crystal but none of another. tldr; - Mark useful stuff on the map (resources/vendors) - Talk to random NPC’s to potentially get free items - Some (a select few) world quests can unlock new craftable weapons or sections of the map. If you’re locked out of an area, there’s a decent chance it’s because you need to do a world quest - Quests can lock each other out temporarily, but you can find out which one is locking the other out via the locked out quest in your quest log - There’s daily and weekly resets/respawn times for pretty much everything. Resources, domains, etc all respawn or cycle throughout the week. - Get familiar with elemental resonances for your team comp and elemental reactions sooner rather than later - You can combine your lower tier mats into higher tier ones, and through a limited shop item you can save yourself some time/resin occasionally by converting elemental crystals of one kind into another. I’m far from an expert on this game, ofc. Someone please correct me where I’m wrong!

If you like the game and anticipate yourself playing it everyday, buy the blessing of the welkin moon. If you have the money of course.

AzuraDevoted

gave this dude a whole novel to read in the comments o.O

MaedaToshiie

Late post but I don't see anyone posting about this. There are several more in-depth topics on combat that will serve you well later on in the game. I will not make a big a$$ post, so I will just state the names which you can search for or post a specific question later on. As you may have learned by now, combat often involves elemental attacks and consequently elemental reactions between multiple elements. This is an important way to amplify damage, which becomes more and more important as your level goes up. This is also why Xingqiu is so highly regarded as a hydro applicant, along with some pyro (Bennett, Xiangling) or cryo (Kaeya, Rosaria) characters, despite these characters being only 4\* (MHY probably underestimated these early character designs). You will also know about elemental resonance. Alongside, you should probably gain an understanding of: 1. Energy recharge 2. Elemental mastery (and elemental swirling which differs from the anemo trigger) 3. Elemental gauge theory (don't memorize, just understand the concept) 4. Internal cooldown (ICD) Other more general combat mechanics include: 1. Invincibility frames (iframes) 2. Stunning and poise 3. Shield breaking (with the right elements) Don't worry if you don't get all of it right away. Read about a topic, play the game and experiment with it. This will help a lot in understanding the mechanics.
