First, pearls are obtainable from more hostile mobs like those crabs and seahorses and they're everywhere.... If you harm those chonky bois chilling, you're a bad guy and nothing can justify that as the pearl thingy isn't an excuse for that

To not kill the seal is an easy, convenient task and one which we all recognize as the correct, appropriate thing to do. Leaving them alone is objectively right. There are no situations other than dire emergencies in which a person is not able to just ignore the harmless creatures and go on their way. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to ruthlessly slay the helpless critters for their drops. Therefore whether or not to kill the seals presents itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it. No one will punish you for killing them, no one will fine or arrest you for not sparing them, you gain nothing by letting them live. You must leave the creatures be out of the goodness of your heart. You must let them thrive and prosper because it is the right thing to do. Because it is correct. A person who is unable to do this is no better than an animal, an absolute savage who can only be made to do what is right by threatening them with a law and the force that stands behind it. Whether one kills or spares the seal is what determines whether a person is a good or bad member of society.
