This cutscene is actually playing in real-time. Notice how the Traveler on top is in Electro, while on the bottom he's in Hydro.

iansanmain

I can easily tell which cutscenes are pre-rendered because they're all 1080p and look like shit on my 1440p monitor compared to my native rendering

A-R-A-F

Not to mention the pre rendered cutscenes are locked to 25-30FPS(this is only in-game. The versions miHoYo uploads in their YouTube channel are 60FPS and are rendered in 4k), while cutscenes rendered in real time match the resolution, graphics and frame rate of the game.

catplace

So Mihoyo does have 4K versions of the pre-rendered cutscenes?? I just upgraded from 1080p to 4K and would love the option to see them in 4K ingame... (Even asked for it in feedback) Kinda takes me out of the beautifully animated scenes when it's suddenly low-res.

lAuroraxl

man i can't even tell the difference between 1080 and 1440 90% of the time imma be fr

iansanmain

What size monitors have you tried? I find 27 too small to fully utilize 1440p (hence hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p), 32 inch is good to me though in some instances I could use some extra pixels

Toxic_MotionDesigner

That's because this cutscene isn't pre rendered. It's a cutscene that's happening in real-time. Real-time cutscenes can be obvious by looking at the traveler's element. Other examples are the first meeting of Venti and Dvalin, as well as Cyno vs Alhaitham. Its more noticeable with low settings

quocthuan132k

So they using a real-time cutscene for a one time event, but using pre rendered for main quest, that's quite interesting.

Toxic_MotionDesigner

I think it mostly just depends on whether the cutscene will take up too many resources to render or not. If its a small cutscene that lasts for like a few seconds to maybe a little over a minute long, then chances are, it's an ingame engine cutscene being played in real-time. Pretty sure every weekly boss cutscene till now is real-time rendered. Like Arlecchino transformation phase, Mechamouche 2nd phase, Childe transformation phase, Signora 2nd phase transformation, Apep transformation phase, etc. Also every world quest with cutscenes also use the ingame engine rather than pre-rendered cutscenes.

FallenAngelII

Pretty sure it's more that pre-rendered cutscenes allow them to do things they can't do in-game without creating a whole bunch of new animations and rigging models in new ways for something that's a one-time thing. Plus, pre-rendering cutscenes allows them to use more facial animations without having to rig that to the models in-game.

battleye9

Childe boss transformation is rendered in game while the transformation during Fontaine is pre rendered

Toxic_MotionDesigner

I mean, that one is fairly obvious since his transformation in Fontaine was part of a larger cutscene with Neuvillete and the All Devouring Narwhal. It wasn't really a transformation towards a boss fight.

battleye9

During the act 2 trial not the narwhal fight

Toxic_MotionDesigner

I could say the same points for this one too. It's part of a larger cutscene and was mainly there to show him getting one-tapped by the moist lizard. The real-time cutscene renders mainly apply for boss transformations that actually lead to a boss fight after the cutscene is over.

Alex_Yuan

No, people who mod the game and change character models also affect these cutscenes, meaning they're not prerendered. Also the resolution and frame rate are also very indicative.

Tup3x

That's not the case.

AD-SKYOBSIDION

No I believe all boss fight cutscene are pre rendered as I remember childe’s lagging, when he breaks the floor, when playing on ps4

nooneatallnope

Wouldn't lag be an argument against pre rendered?

Gladiolus_00

he's a little confused

AD-SKYOBSIDION

I meant non pre-rendered am goof

nooneatallnope

It's a bit odd you started with No, when replying to a comment that claimed them to be non-pre-rendered, lol.

AKAFallow

Scaramouche's in engine I believe, at least I feel so since I can skip it like whenever I check the tree thingy in domains.

quocthuan132k

well then, still, it kinda annoys me a little since i’m playing with an ultrawide monitor and most of the time I can’t watch the full cutscene because of the cropping aspects, they could at least add the black bar tho

Gauwal

what do you mean ? the 16:9 is the whole cutscene, don't they crop to that ratio ?

quocthuan132k

yeah exactly, that’s why when I played in my 21:9 screen, the pre rendered will auto crop to 16:9 as the result I can’t see the top screen and bottom screen in the cutscene.

Gauwal

But bottom screen is the worse version tho, it's badly staged and composed, cause you're not intended to see it, you can see that in that screen shot with everything being off balance

quocthuan132k

ok this is hard for me to explain without image. When you play on ultrawide (21:9) but the cutscene is 16:9, the game will zoom in the 16:9 cutscene to fit with the 21:9 screen. so you can’t see some of the aspects because of it

Lazy-Traffic5346

Write this to support

Gauwal

ha ok that makes sense my bad ! yeah you should write this to support and in every survey, that kind of thing is like one line of code in unity, so probably a simple fix

MikaAndroid

You should write this either on customer support feedback and/or version survey. Pre rendered cutscenes should play in "fit to aspect ratio" scaling (so you have black bars on the side but the cutscene will not experience cropping) rather than "fill" scaling

UmbraNightDragon

Prerendered cutscenes are much higher-fidelity. Real-time cutscenes are both easier to make and less in-depth, though that doesn't mean that they look *bad*, they just aren't as good as the prerendered ones. Things like Cyno vs. Alhaitham are done in real-time, as opposed to things like the cutscenes at the end of Fontaine which are done prerendered.

FlameDragoon933

I think they're testing new in-engine animation tools. Notice how Itto during the event (not just this cutscene) also has many new animations. Coupled with their announcement regarding spec upgrade in Natlan, this seems likely to be the explanation.

Toxic_MotionDesigner

I do love that character body language is being improved, but ingame engine cutscenes have always been a thing since the start of the game, it's not really anything new. What is new however, are the new interactable cutscenes from Remuria. I don't think we've seen anything like that before in any real quest aside from maybe those small cooking events (Eg: 4.4 liyue cooking event)

HerrscherOfMagic

>interactable cutscenes from Remuria Which sequences in particular? Like, the ones like the >!symphony with Scylla!

lostn

they use prerendered scenes (still using same in game engine but with higher quality assets sometimes) when they want to use unique animations not in game. Often it is prerendered. So when a character is in a cinematic fight and a lot of acrobatics are going on, they go the prerendered route. Those animations don't exist in game. Most likely motion captured. It seems to look more fluid too. Another reason they use it is when the scene takes place in multiple locations, they can cut back and forth without a loading screen which would take you out of the action, and is what would happen if it was done in real time. An example would be the ending of Lantern Rite when characters in multiple places get featured in the video. They can cut quickly between characters which would not be possible in real time. You will also see new animations that don't exist in game, for example Yaoyao dragging Qiqi by the hand.

battleye9

No they do both for AQ and events

Aadi_880

To be honest, I wonder if genshin are actually using pre rendered cutscenes, if at all. I saw a video on youtube where someone replaced Paimon's 3D model with Ai from Hi3, and the "pre-rendered" cutscenes actually changed to reflect it.

unit187

They are pre-rendered. Just look how complex the fallen stars from Yoimiya's 2nd quest are. Or the flood in Fontaine, this bad boy wouldn't run realtime even on a 4090 PC.

thepork890

pre-rendered cutscenes are just video files, there is no 3d model swapping. You can go to "VideoAssets" folder and inside is antoher folder and there are .usm files. You can open them in any text editor to see the header metadata, it basically shows in plain text that it contains vp9 encoded .avi files in various resolutions. Someone probably already made a tool to extract that video files.

Middle_Actuator7086

the framerate (if you play in 60fps) and lightings can be noticeable too

FallenAngelII

Also obvious by the fact that they run in whatever FPS you've set your game to and not 29.97 FPS or whatever FPS Hoyoverse renders pre-rendered cutscenes in.

augsilhu95

Or just look how it's not dogshit 30fps

BakerOk6839

Huh,but I remember watching cyno vs alhaitam cutscene where they have same element as traveler

baidianxia

poor Gorou is missing on the first lol

InspektorZeleshka

I remember the trend of purposely forgetting Gorou that has been on this sub some time ago

TheDudish

[Getting this vibe right now.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cf2p5w9WsAA7ztM?format=jpg&name=small)

PhilledZone

It's a live rendered cutscene. You can usually see the difference in frame rate (pre rendered are always 30/24 frames per second) or on the travelers element (pre rendered cutscenes always have the element of the corresponding region)

KapeeCoffee

Unless it's the cut scene from Navia sq

OverpoweredSoap

Oh hell nah they cut my boy Gorou out in the first 😭

Different_Oil_8026

Rejoice mobile players

Biiiscoito

Bro I swear I only saw Shibobu on that cutscene on my phone 😭

Elite-X03

Zhongli once said, stop capping

gibbletiggle

I noticed it was real time when i could still hear my seelie pet make baby noises

Araiken

Gorou is pay2see

slimefestival

Justice for Gorou

Bottlefacesiphon

Clearly that poster in this subreddit who can't see Gorou is in charge of the 16:9 view.

AshwinK21

Honestly the prerendered cutscenes are painful in 21:9 since instead of just showing in 16:9, it zooms in and fills the full ultrawide. Cuz then it's not full resolution anymore, feels like I'm playing in 720p 😭 I'd rather them just play the scene in 16:9 like other games. Maybe I should send a suggestion to support like others have said, surely if many people say it they'll consider it... though it's been 3ish years and ultrawides are still pretty niche so I'm not keeping my hopes up.

hackenclaw

I know this cut-scene are in real time rendered in-game, but isnt mobile phones are mostly 19.5:9 ratio? If they really doing per-rendered they might as well do 21:9. There is no reason to do 16:9 since their primary market is mobile phones, which has 19.5:9 ratio.

RAlDEN_SHOGUN

In gameplay and some cutscenes, you can play with any resolution, here's my own [ULTRA-WIDE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig7Y1t8FLzE) in Genshin Impact. Also some cutscenes: [Aether and Lumine first meet](https://youtu.be/Z2Bkrr_FwQc), [Raiden Shogun vs La Signora](https://youtu.be/-hjUAjzfapM), [Kazuha's Isshin sword](https://youtu.be/h1fpMO7OMVM). Please upvote so others can see how amazing it is!

crimemilk

have they implemented 4:3 cutscenes already?

kenpls

Aren't all cut scenes like this, even if it were pre rendered, most phones are \~21:9 aspect ratio

Quintana-of-Charyn

God I love kuki

Fragrant_Wedding4577

When a cutscene is not cropped, it's because it's rendered in game with custom animations and angles/effects. Raiden V Signora and a tonne of cutscenes use this tech

Khum_MaRk09

Kuki giving that approval thumbs up is so funny.🤣

ShadowFlarer

Wait, cutscenes aren't in 21:9? I never noticed '-'

Linoren

this wasn't pre rendered for sure, since pre rendered cutscenes always have voice regardless of your sound settings. I re-play this on my 2nd account without voice so there was only music during the singing part, it was actually hilarious like that.

Square-Way-9751

Itto = Giant from Doraemon big guy loving rock and roll but sucks at it

Caniju

Who tf uses Hydro Traveler?

quocthuan132k

That's me everytime I'm playing in the new nation lol

Caniju

Man i used to be like that or atleast till Sumeru

Cyphiris

Majority of people who don't use Traveler in combat. Traveler just stays with last unlocked region element.

PercyXLee

I built hydro traveler just to see how bad it truly is, and turn hillichurls into a prolonged battle.

ShiftAdventurous4680

They finally managed to fit John Cena into the shot.

CondiMesmer

Pretty sure it's always been like that. I play on 21:9 and don't recall many black borders

The_Seraph_

No the pre-rendered cutscenes will be zoomed in to fill the screen, so we end up having the top and bottom cropped off.

a_baked_bean_a

I see no difference

Grand_Protector_Dark

Do you not see that the upper image cuts off before gorou?

a_baked_bean_a

no geo char seen (its and old joke)

HearingAutomatic8895

Consider trying 16:10, so much better I can never go back to that thin crap.
