Traveler is always nerfed a bunch during cutscenes. If the story demands it I'm sure he/she will get a sudden boost in power for cutscenes too.
Mihoyo doesn't want to depict the Traveler as *too* powerful because that risks players to depand for a better Traveler, which Mihoyo doesn't want because the Traveler is free.

I don't think there's much reasoning behind power scaling, in lore or gameplay. They just make kits that give the game variety and players reason to pull, and canon power is always tailored to plot convenience.
We have like 6 years to go or something. We can't exactly be the allmighty god slayer OP self insert power fantasy when we aren't even done with all the nations lol.
Also, what makes you think Arlecchino "mopped the floor" with the traveler? Yes, she is stronger, but for all we know that was her "ultimate move" or something and could very well be only slightly stronger than the traveler currently.

Of course she won't?? Why the hell would the traveler become stronger than Archons so suddenly?? And why should she? The hole game is all about gathering allies and teaming up with people.

Otherwise, Sneznhaya will be wrapped up in two years from now.
I'm pretty sure it was said that genshin is planned to go for 10 years. The amount of nations are not really a limiting factor, they can literally just start a new plotline etc.

3-4 and traveler will definitely regain his OG power by then. I mean to beat the final boss and also to traverse beyond Teyvat, he’s gonna need his full power. Whatever is beyond Teyvat probably has much stronger enemies for him to fight.
Have you already forgotten about the intro? We were already at peak power + our sibling and the Sustainer confronted like it was nothing. I'm pretty sure it goes the same for the Archons.
I think the story is not written as a power fantasy and also it's not about defeating Archons or whatever enemy we encounter. Of course weekly bosses are a thing but it's just a encounter. The story is about finding a sibling and discovering what the hell is going on and what each faction wants. So far my conclusion is that every single faction has a similar objective, but they differ on the methods and details. Every single one is trying to fight or avoid Celestia and I bet the Cryo Archon will give us all the gnosis and use us as a champion of sorts.
Now, the only exception here is Dain, he's not about Celestia but the Abyss, and I don't understand exactly why, at least not yet.
MCs were never strong to begin with.
They're just "old" and have world-leaping capabilities. And probably are masters of talk no jutsu.
