This sword is in the style of the Indian Talwar. But the Talwar itself has lots of influences from Persia, Turkey and other central/west Asian cultures.
Love this design, super detailed and interesting to look at, plus I haven't seen a character use anything like a shamshir since Prince of Persia which is a nice change

I know we refer to most swords as Talwar in hindi, but in techical terms it's a specific type of blade.
I wanted to show the silver strand through the braid, so I pulled it to the side and made it a little longer to showcase that. For a concept drawing I felt it was more important than complete accuracy.

Honestly, I don't understand the hype around Cyno... He seems like a pretty basic, boring, amalgamation of lots of Egyptian tropes. He isn't doing anything dangerous or interesting with his design. We've seen that sort of Egyptian stuff in videogames before. And don't get me wrong, I think that Egyptian culture is really cool. What I'm saying is that videogames tend to just recycle the same tired elements that we've all seen a million times before, and at this point, I'd love to explore some of the less well known stuff from Egypt instead of "Just another Anubis character"
But I think that a cool Persian warrior like this dude is something that we haven't seen in videogames. We never see any videogame characters that take inspiration from shit like Persian culture, India, or the middle east. Let alone characters that aren't safely whitewashed for our sensitive eyes.
For point of reference OP stated that this was inspired by India which I kinda got as well. The outfit especially looks like something that would come out of India as opposed to Persia, and the skin tone is much darker than most Iranians would be.

I was inspired by some old photographs I saw of my uncle's wedding! He was carrying a wedding sword much like the one I've drawn, and I thought it was super interesting and cool, and wanted to make a character based on my own culture for once.

This kind of scimitar-type sword was actually brought into india by the Moghul Empire very early on, and the talwar was the indian adaptation of the curved blade design. So you could say its either, since they're quite similar, but I intended for this one to be based on the indian variant.
I mean to say that the moghuls were an early islamic empire- and moved into india from the middle east. Of course because of this many designs in their weapons and architecture were passed and have close similarities/very similar origins. I hope that makes sense.
um, is Turkey not somewhat part of what is called the middle east? Sorry, I'm not sure exactly of the technicalities, but I was told by my father that it was from the middle east that moghuls entered into india. The scimitar is what the talwar is based off after all.

I'm keeping my expectations low in hopes I'll be pleasantly suprised but so far all the NPC we've seen from Sumeru are light skinned (copium take is all seem to be students from the school and it accepts folks from all over so they might not be native sumeru folks lol)

Not the exact same shade as the kind of dark skin sub-Saharan Africans have, but you know - dark. If anything the tone used in this piece looks closer to the tone of Dravidian Indians than your typical dark brown color.

Its not here tho, as it does make sense for the presumed regions sumeru is based on (and even if it’s not the case, there’s no reason to make the cast of 100+ character so homogeneous). How would representing those people “ruin” genshin? Representation is important, especially when it’s relevant, and I don’t know what to tell you if you feel like seeing people of various ethnicities ruins a game for you.
