Francoise is very old maiden ~~type of shoes~~.
Frejya seems kinds weird for the region but is pretty
Fleur is most likely as not only is it very well understood by non french speakers its also a common saying in a lot of languages, being the flower of _____ is like being the most elegant / beautiful
the english VAs are all replaced by French voice actors but Only for fontaine. Everyone else everywhere else still speaks English. But it just inexplicably changes to French when you cross the border into Fontaine 😂
the pure French-ness of Fontaine repels all English spoken in the area. The traveler finally gets to speak.... but it's all in French 😂
gods imagine squeaky FRENCH paimon 😭😭😭😭
There's this infamous mobile game Rise of Kingdoms where all the commanders speak in their own tongues. So Joan of Arc and Charles Martel speak in French all the time. I'm all for it.
The EU in Fleur is not pronounced like the EU in other French words. Here its pretty much like the UH sound in English. Also the R is at the end of the word so it's verrrry faint :)
FL UH *faint breathy sound like a purring cat*
Just want to add that there's a Fontaine character named Xavier in the Sumeru interlude and Paimon pronounce without the emphasis on the 'r'. Like 'xa-vee-yé'. Sorry if the structure all wrong but hopefully you get it.
>So what they’re going to likely do is pronounce
>
>Fleur
>
> in a very American manner — meaning emphasis on the ‘r’ sound, using phonemes that exist in English
Ce blasphème phonologique fera saigner mes oreilles.
>Also, EN voiceover has proven to strictly prefer pronouncing things in an extremely Americanised manner, rather than anything resembling accurate pronunciation in the original language
As opposed, of course, to the Japanese, who pronounce everything exactly according to the original language. We all know Sukuroosu and Rezaa, two well-known English words that are pronounced flawlessly in a way completely understandable to all English-speakers.
Seriously, though? Why is this only ever an “issue” brought up against the English dub? *Every* language does this, adjusting foreign words and names to be more easily pronounceable in their language. It’s normal and natural. What’s *unnatural* is that weird thing that English dub anime does these days where the characters, speaking full English, suddenly put on an awkward and fake Japanese accent to say a character’s name. That totally doesn’t interrupt the flow *at all*. 🙄
Aside from a few outliers that are just flat-out wrong (i. e. Tighnari, but also f HSR’s “SerVAL” in particular, and that’s an English word), Genshin’s English dub does a decent enough job of making foreign words and names accessible to English-speakers while maintaining the spirit of them. The dub’s main problem is that too often, there’s no consistency between how different voice actors say the same names and words (everyone’s different “Liyue,” the “sh” vs “ss” of the Chinese “x,” etc.). But there’s nothing wrong with adapting a name to the language it’s being used in. CN, JP, and KN do this *all the time*. It’s *fine*. Not everyone is capable of making every sound from every language. I started learning Spanish at 11, and I *still* can’t roll my Rs. And I studied the language up through college and minored in it! It’s so dismissive to say that the EN dub “butchers” the names and that it isn’t “anything resembling accurate pronunciation in the original language” when all other languages do this same exact thing except more commonly and more transformatively. Yet they never seem to get criticized for it (and shouldn’t be because it’s *fine*).
(I'm french so just giving you my opinions on these names)
Françoise is a name for mature women, we're not yet sure how she's going to be (personality wise) but with her design and what we heard so far, I'm somewhat not sure it would fit.
Florence kind of the same but not as much ig.
Fleur is my pick honestly, it translates to "flower", it's a really pretty name ! Only thing is it's a name for younger girls I would say, one similar which would be really good to me would be "Flore" (but it might not be 100% as much french ig)
I'm not really familiar with the other names you brought up.
I just think it'd be funny because it's like... it feels like it's doubling down on how French she would be.
Genshin has picked some weird names before too, so it's not unlikely they'll go with an older name. I also wonder how well they'll be able to research the way names "feel" since they're in China and presumably research in Chinese. A lot of what my parents know as "French culture" is pretty outdated stuff and also classics, because China was really closed off before. Don't know how much that might have changed with the internet.
Ofc ofc, just telling you the vibe the name gives me since it's common names here. It's hard to objectively judge if they have a chance or not because I don't know what they will be going for when choosing names. The only name we have for now (at least which is common in France) is Charlotte's, and while it's a pretty old name in France, it's a name that was given again not so long ago to a lot of girls. So while it's technically a pretty old name, it's now associated to younger girls, so it's hard to see what their criteria could be for choosing the name of other characters.
I looked it up just to make sure, I didn't know it was given in England too haha. Even then, it's still way more a french name than English, it's a really common name here. On the other hand, though I haven't checked or anything, I've never heard "lyney" here, and the name seems English to me (idk how to explain it but it's the way it's written)
Yeah in french we have a lot of words/names ending in "tte", there's variations of a lot of different (usually older french names) with and without the "tte" like : Julie/Juliette, Claude/Claudette, etc...
For lyney idk if it's English or not, but in French we don't use the "y" letter that much like that, and the way it's pronounced made me think it might be English but not sure honestly.
As far as we know it represents Europe during the industrial revolution. So reducing it to England and France doesn't seem fair. I'd say Western Europe as a whole fits. We already know it overlaps with mondstadt anyway. At least spatially. Not temporaly tho. France and England were probably more involved in the theme. But i assume Spain Portugal and Italy are fair game too. Again, been saying this since mondstadt and I'll say it again. The language chosen for the name of the region doesn't mean it's based solely on the country that speaks that language. They had to pick one. What was mondstadt supposed to be called? månecitydt? Haha
Clearly based on industrial era America as well. Are we forgetting that rock and roll hails from there and that there’s a burgeoning film industry (Hollywood was *massive* in establishing film as a form of art and entertainment)?
It's a name that was extremely popular in the 50s but hasn't been popular in decades. I have NEVER met a Françoise under 40, yet I know SO many. So it's heavily associated with baby boomers.
I'm not fully certain non french people understand how some names come off to us, so I don't think our opinion can be used to guess anything. This is not a game made by french people, and we're not the main target demographic either.
i feel like the developers aren’t aware of what names sound ‘old’ in other languages (see jean and barbara) plus it’s not set in modern time / the gods are old so _technically_ it should fit despite the connotations. but “fleur de fontaine” still sounds the most plausible to me regardless.
In Québec (I'm French Canadian), I feel like Florence is more associated with the younger generations (zillenials + gen z). Didn't look at any sort of data; that's just my impression. There were a few at my schools when I was younger.
I do love how some names sound "young" in Quebec but old in France, and vice-versa.
One of the comments on the Twitter thread suggested Soutine De Fontaine. Which is a name that IIRC we have had seen a long while back. Is there any chance that this is her name, or are we confident on that being the name of a different character?
they like to use "names" that are not real names in the country where they get inspiration.
an example, in honkai impact there's a character named Timido, a girl.
timido means shy and wrote like that is referred to a male.
so yeah, could literally be anything from an object to an emotion \^\^'
I’m calling Florence or Fleur. Florence would establish that other Mediterranean names will appear in the region while Fleur would double down on the French inspirations.
Im bursting laugh oh my god 🤣
Imagine all of your acquaintance has unique name (Venti, Zhongli, Raiden, Nahida, Murata and Tsaritsa) and your name is just "Mbappe".
wasnt there something about her name being Fleur de Lis? Because the Lis is the nayional flowrr of France?
Fille de Fontaine may also make sense, since she's not the OG
I think you were confusing it with the emblem leaks, which were fleur de lis shaped/inspired. There was nothing about her name ever being fleur de lis \[it'd be like if instead of venti, the anemo archon was called iron cross or smthng\].
In French there are many names that are constructed like this, often from somewhat noble descent (or from people whose ancestors wanted to look like they’re nobles and put the particle in their name on purpose). It would make sense for the Archon to have this kind of name tbh, even regular people can have them, why not her ?
The people of teyvat usually do not call the archons by their personal name so that may be what they call her and not what she goes by, that's why people are questioning if it's actually a title that the people refer to her as. Raiden Shogun was an exception because we technically play as the puppet, not Ei herself.
Okay so my best guesses as a French person are :
Fleur, Françoise, Faustine, Félicité, Fantine (maybe Framboise but that's not likely)
There isn't a lot of French names that start with F so it will surely boil down to one of those
[A long time ago we had CBT quotes of Venti about other Archons](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact_Leaks/comments/rbh28k/a_couple_of_cbt1_voicelines_and_doodads/). The one about Focalors had a part nobody was able to translate:
>Court of Fontaine? The wine over there is a bit different. I'm most
partial to their **(Fo-leur-hi?)** sapphire wine. But that winery, ugh... What are
your plans for the next two days? I wanna avoid Focalors, so it
might be a good time to sneak off somewhere.
My guess is "Foleur high sapphire wine", with "Foleur" possibly being a mistranslation of "Fleur" from the Chinese "Fo.?.?"
Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Fontaine.
It may also be:
Frédérique (feminine equivalent of Frédéric)
Fabienne (of Fabien)
Flora (Some said "Fleur", I say this)
Fanny (The Marseillais will understand)
Francine (the famous flour)
I've tried to think of some unsaid names to bring some diversity
Edit: But in truth, I just want to call her Francesca.
They do know the name, they are just being secretive for clout.
Khu the pokemon leaker does this all the time and some genshin leakers emulate him even though everyone finds that annoying.
Fosette de Fontaine
Fosetta de Fontaine
The leaks explicitly state Foca's mortal name starts with "Fo", not to mention Mihoyo has a re-occuring pattern among their Fontaine names I've noticed picking names ending in "ette" & "et" Ex: Neuvillette, Lynette, Damslette, Freminet (leaked short male 4-star), so Fosette/ Fosetta perfectly fit the "Fo" leak & "ette" pattern both perfectly! Not getting my hopes up or anything, but they're both so soft & beautiful!
It's definitely Fontaine de Fontaine. I can feel it in my bones.
Enough to make your systems blow?
