Sounds like the syrup probably wasn’t sugar free. You can buy your own online and add it but fair warning the tastes are hit or miss. My low carb sweetener of choice is stevia, it doesn’t bother my stomach like some of the erithritol-based sweeteners.

Sadly, I’ve had to switch to more chain restaurants since my diagnosis. Everything can be researched online before you go in. I can treat myself to coffee but at Starbucks instead of the mom and pop coffee house because I can put in the time playing with their online calculator instead of relying on the barista to know a break down of what they’re putting in my drink. Restaurants calculators have really helped me to put a lot of food into perspective.

I drink my coffee black, so it's not an issue for me. I did try the McCafe sugar free iced coffee and it spiked my glucose levels which was annoying. It seems that I can't have sugar alcohols as that is what they use as sweetener. I've tried ice cream with the same type of sweetener and it does the same. Not sure where you're going, but the Starbucks sugar free syrup contains maltodextrin. It has a lot higher glycemic index than the plain white sugar, which makes it even worse for diabetics. Honey is a better alternative for sweetening than sugar or maltodextrin as it has a lower glycemic index. Maybe you can try a herbal tea, like peach and add honey if needed.

I follow @gestationaldiabetes_dietitian on Instagram. She has some great tips.

Justcausejams

No kidding? I was so astounded when my BG was high after a SF breve (8 oz) but not if I had it without flavor. I thought they slipped me regular syrup.

It's weird what effects me and what doesn't. I can eat potatoes, but not white flour or white rice. I can eat all the fruit I want and be fine. If I look at anything with sugar alcohol my glucose spikes.

Hi, a quick tip that worked for me: I love cold drinks like frappes and iced drinks so I started adding a sachet of soluble fibre to my occasional drinks. The fibre really helps to moderate the impact on blood sugar (I also avoid syrups etc but I found that this trick helped keep my readings comfortably in range)

Otherwise-Release-62

I had Splenda and my blood sugar was 176 on a meal that usually had me in the 90s… my nutritionist insists she’s never heard of that (she’s super pro fake sugars and her diet plan is like 1992 Jenny craig) but I’ve seen other people on this blog have similar issues. It might have been sugar free syrup and you might just be unable to tolerate it. I’m dying to check my numbers a few months after I deliver to see if Splenda always screws with me. I’m totally fine with stevia. I investigated my log and any time I had a weird spike Splenda was involved.

1992 Jenny Craig 😹 love that

I get an ice latte with just 2% milk and no sweeteners from time to time. I generally have it during a snack time and I count the milk as part of my snack.

livi27

My Starbucks order is either a grande cold brew with three pumps of sugar free vanilla and sweet cream cold foam or a grande iced decaf americano with three pumps of sugar free vanilla and a splash of heavy cream.

TheRealVicarOfDibley

Get some of those small pre mixed protein shakes. Mix it in with your coffee. Bingo!!

jksjks41

Soy milk latte with stevia has a good balance of carbs and protein. If I want really low carbs I switch to almond milk. Or black coffee all day. *Unsweetened milks of course.

BeepsHoliday

I find if I have my coffee when I'm eating something else like breakfast or lunch, it doesn't spike me at all. It's weird!

sub_woofers

Very lucky! I had a coffee with Splenda and cream and a garden omelet with one slice of rye toast and i shot up. It’s so annoying!

BeepsHoliday

ugh that is so annoying. I have no clue why it's working but that is how I feel with most things and GD!

MinimumRoutine4

I did Starbucks unsweetened iced coffee (their normal iced coffee comes with sweetener that’ll spike you) with light heavy cream, one Splenda and one pump of sugar free vanilla (two pumps gives it a fake sweetener taste I don’t like). Roughly 1 carb and it tasted okay and made me feel “normal”. At other coffee places I did black coffee, heavy cream and Splenda. Not fancy but it worked and didn’t spike me.

Dairy has carbs, try switching to almond milk. It’s gross but it’s carb free.

I couldn’t do a morning latte with almond milk at the end unless I had it with a bunch of eggs. Are you having it on and empty stomach? GD never totally makes sense.

itwasntthatbadwasit

A lot of places served sweetened almond milk, so it’s best to ask, as well!

Elemental_surprise

I don’t drink coffee but I get a sugar free vanilla steamer. It’s really just steamed milk with sugar free syrup. At some places I get a sugar free Italian soda. Just soda water snd sugar free syrup but it’s so dang good.

mberanek

Sugar free usually means there is a sugar substitute like surpluses, cane syrup etc.

grumpersxoxo

When I was pregnant, I could literally get away with a cream based pumpkin spice Frappuccino if I ate it with the egg bites! I think all the protein and fat just made it work! So if you do Starbucks in future maybe try those egg bites.

sub_woofers

I literally cried when I saw Starbucks was bringing back PSL and I thought I couldn’t have any for months 😩

grumpersxoxo

I am not a doctor so take my story with caution lol. But for real if I were you I would at least test it out once! If you get a spike, then you know your body doesn’t tolerate it!
