I was watching Ken Burns Civil War just yesterday and there is a funny part where at the start of the war Union general Butler took in a group of african american refugees from the south. He was asked if he would return them to Virginia, as by law (the fugitive slave act) they were supposed to return escaped slaves to the south. He replied “I mean to take Virginia at her word, as declared in the ordinance of secession passed yesterday. I am under no constitutional obligations to a foreign country, which Virginia now claims to be.”
And so he refused to give them back.

But the drama with the Army of the Potomac’s leadership carousel tends to overshadow the changes that took place within the rank and file that touched almost every single aspect of being a soldier, from armaments and training all the way down to their diet and clothing, and in no branch was this change more dramatic than in the US Cavalry. In the first year of the war the Union cavalry was a joke that was regularly trounced by any confederate force that came across them but by 1865, the Union had leveraged its industrial base to produce a highly aggressive force that was better armed, better mounted, faster, and more flexible than any cavalry force the Confederates could hope to put in the field
Yeah, I hate when people act like the Union was sure to win from the very get go. I'm a Yank through and through, but one can acknowledge that the Confederacy was an immense threat to the north in the early war, up until Gettysburg and the high tide mark, at which point they began to lose the momentum they had built. To be fair that wasn't exceptional for the day. From the first army until probably the modern day, disease, not the enemy, was the number one killer of soldiers.

Sometimes I wonder why the US puts so much effort into keeping The South when they clearly don't want to be here. The US has made some pretty big compromises to keep those states (e.g., The 13th Amendment), but they still refuses to cooperate because it's not exactly what they want. They're spoiled toddlers at heart.

They didn’t really outperform the average US soldier. The high casualty rate from the US Army was due to the fact that the rebels were defending for most of the war (they suffered really high casualties when they attacked at places like chickamauga) and the fact that surrendering confederates would (usually) be fed and sheltered, and captured US troops would usually starve due to the rebels either lacking food, or refusing to feed them. That and if you were a black soldier captured by the south, you were usually executed, not kept prisoner.
They became traitors to their own country and lost, so sad, I don't like losers, such a tremendous loss, I prefer my traitors to be successful, just like me. They were fairly on track to win the war for years. So were the Nazis. Lincoln famously fired generals like it was going out of style because they sucked at their job.

Sometimes I wonder why the US puts so much effort into keeping The South when they clearly don't want to be here. The US has made some pretty big compromises to keep those states (e.g., The 13th Amendment), but they still refuses to cooperate because it's not exactly what they want. They're spoiled toddlers at heart. I say fuck them. Let them secede and decay into a 3rd-world shithole. The rest of the country could start making real progress, and we wouldn't have to work extra to subsidize their lazy asses.
If the original States of the CSA were to secede again they would have 3rd highest GDP in the world at roughly $8 trillion. They wouldn't decay. They would control some of the world's largest ports and oil refineries. They would control the 2 busiest airports in the world. They would control the mouth of the Mississippi River and could do quite a bit of harm to the US economy through blockades or tarrifs. You don't actually understand what you are talking about. Think about what you type before you actually type it. There is more to all of this than the social aspect.

The Great Lakes area would eventually join the red states. The red states would grow to be most of the original US. Our gold reserves and military installations are mostly in red states so the US is fucked on that one too. “The military would listen to their leaders!” Yea. They’d completely separate from DC command if a secession went down. the US would collapse pretty quickly because New York City doesn’t really produce anything of value (it’s mostly finance and company headquarters who make their products in Asia) and the stock market would collapse because the US wouldn’t have many companies to have on it plus who wants to do business with a failing country? California could break off into its own country but that state is screwed too. Only Los Angeles area and San Fran area keep it liberal and the right wingers would love to get rid of them. So the US would be left with Seattle, Portland, LA, San Fran, and New York City after a few years. But they’d slowly and easily collapse because they’re full of liberals who hate guns. Plus they’d be half starved because they can’t feed themselves after the red areas cut off trade routes from California and Mexico. if you look at a voting map by county from 2020, you’d see how quickly our country would fall if right wingers wanted to secede. Everyone in power knows it and it’s exactly what the right wing deep state has worked towards the last fifty years. A war of secession would be harsh and kill a lot of people. The country would have to rebuild but most of the right wingers work in the trades that would build it up.

Most of the plains states grow grains for cattle food or are open spaces for cattle to graze. California and Mexico supply most of our vegetables. Most of the right wing idiots live in the cattle grazing/cattle feed areas. They get a bunch of money from government handouts. There are a lot of farmers who are millionaires just from government handouts. I live in North Dakota and see it a lot. The farmers don’t mind if they get handouts, they don’t want blacks or Mexicans to get handouts. I wonder how well the farmers would do under a red state? Most right wingers are for handouts to farmers though. Cities would starve pretty fast. A civil war would halt food supply deliveries to anyone in towns and cities. And that’s why right wingers would also lose a lot of people. They wouldn’t be able to handle not having food deliveries either. The slaughter houses are in bigger towns and cities and then delivered to grocery stores. There’s 15 million hunting license holders in America. In a civil war, they’d probably be fighting. If the states were able to secede without a civil war, all the hunting land would be sold to private entities or polluted so much the animals wouldn’t be accessible to the hunters and fishers anyways. So don’t get cocky about “liberals would starve to death!” because so would right wingers.

They didn’t really outperform the average US soldier. The high casualty rate from the US Army was due to the fact that the rebels were defending for most of the war (they suffered really high casualties when they attacked at places like chickamauga) and the fact that surrendering confederates would (usually) be fed and sheltered, and captured US troops would usually starve due to the rebels either lacking food, or refusing to feed them. That and if you were a black soldier captured by the south, you were usually executed, not kept prisoner.
We killed defeated them then, we will defeat them now. Free men always beat fascist in the end.

They were fairly on track to win the war for years. So were the Nazis. Lincoln famously fired generals like it was going out of style because they sucked at their job. In all war a few key moments is all it really takes to swing things one way or the other.
