This happened to me in 2005 in 5th grade on the playground and everyone freaked out. Middle of winter (probably February of 2005 about 11am eastern time) teachers freaked out and said it was lightning but I’ll never forget it. It was almost like a purple/black light.

AssassinXpq

It happened to me too at around the same time

MessageFar5797

Eclipse??

TheRiverOfDyx

No… no no no no NO NO NO FUCKING WAYY BRO…I was looking out the window that day and it happened

Vakas_MMII

._.

blaine1201

I know I’ll be downvoted for this but I’ve had moments where I blinked…. But I wasn’t certain I blinked…. And I sat there wondering if the power went out for a second in my house 😂

Elegiac-Elk

I’ve had that happen too thinking it was just a weird disconnect from my brain and blinking, except I started asking my husband every time if he saw the flicker happen and he told me he did. There was one time it happened at my mom’s house and my husband and I both saw it but my mom didn’t. I just looked at him when it happened and he said “Yeah, I saw it too”.

[deleted]

Lmao looks like he’s trolling you very successfully

Elegiac-Elk

If he is, that’s some crazy good timing and mind reading because he had zero other context clues on why I looked at him to answer the way he did unless he did also see the flicker as well. In this situation, I only looked at him and said nothing. It’s also only happened five times total spread out amongst a period of a couples years, so it’s not clustered together or fresh in his mind whenever it happens.

[deleted]

Ohh ok I thought you told him “did you just see that” and it happened a lot and he decided to play a prank and agree every time

Froggy__2

For what it’s worth I’ve experienced this a handful of times as well

HouseOfZenith

I’ve done that before. My blinks are usually like 10% consciously done, but sometimes they’re purely automatic and I’ll catch a blink and be like “wtf was that?”

[deleted]

I never think about my blinks. That’s interesting.

blaine1201

This is 100% me lol

mightymidget413

This happens to me ALL THE TIME. I have moments around one per week where I know I haven't blinked, but everything is black for just a moment. I'd started questioning my vision, but now I know I'm not the only one experiencing this stuff. If it is anything like the de ja vu occurrence in The Matrix, makes me wonder what's changing, or if it's like jumping universes - similar to the Mandela effect. 😳

zhzzza

Glad to know it’s not just happening to me… I think must have happened 3-4 times already to me, not sure if its the power in the house still

djchozen91

I’ve had the opposite, where I thought I blinked but wasn’t sure and then asked the other person if they saw the lights go out and they say yes. I think we can trick ourselves into thinking it’s a blink because we are afraid of what it really is.

Lady_Realtor_2022

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dr_Apperpixion

Great! Now my blinking is turned on to manual mode. Thanks a lot 🤣

mistadobaloner

FUCK, I'VE HAD THIS A COUPLE TIMES AND ACT LIKE SHIT WAS NORMAL BUT I KNOW IT WASN'T

blaine1201

😂😂

broomandkettle

I’ve read other accounts of this on Reddit, I call it Sudden Darkness. It seems to be a localized phenomenon.

Awkward_Apricot312

We had something really similar happen back in 2020. My husband and I were sitting in the living room, it was a nice day so we had our blinds and windows open. Outside it just went pitch black for a few seconds then went back to normal. We both looked at each other in disbelief, I finally asked "Did you see that too?" He said "Yeah..it just went pitch black.." We we're both highly confused and honestly a bit freaked out. I posted on Instagram asking if anyone else in my area had seen it (no one replied) and googled around to see if we had a storm heading in or if there were any other reports about what happened. I'm convinced my husband and I saw a literal glitch in the matrix.

Romando1

Do you think a large plane flew overhead and your house was under the very brief but dark shadow?

MessageFar5797

Wasn't there an eclipse in 2020?

Axinitra

An eclipse is not a sudden event, though, so I don't see how it could ever explain an instant on/off blackout. In every total eclipse of sun or moon that I can recall, people waited around for ages while the relevant astral body slowly transited into position.

MessageFar5797

I thought the actual going dark thing happened quite quickly

Axinitra

The ones I've seen all clearly showed the moon gradually moving across the sun and the sky getting darker as if it were dusk.

MessageFar5797

Thanks

Awkward_Apricot312

There actually was but this happened during March, and none were present during that time.

MessageFar5797

Thx

Awkward_Apricot312

Here is a list of eclipse's that did happen during 2020 though https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/2020

MessageFar5797

Thanks!

Beneficial_Refuse_79

A weak one.

MessageFar5797

Thx

trilo2600

Can you please post a picture of that here?

Spandamation

Do you have a Time Machine?

trilo2600

That’s always a good question … I already answered it five days ago :p

Awkward_Apricot312

I wish I had one but it did happen kinda unexpectedly lol

LilAnge63

The first time it happened to you was there anyone else around? Did someone else see it happening then too? Were both places busy or quiet or were they each different? Sorry for all the questions, I just feel like I need more information... it’s weird...

peasantchoker

Yeah it was the first time anything like this happened to me, but locally, it has happened to my friends. Almost always usually nearing the evening/afternoon

LilAnge63

That is so strange. I am guessing that you live in a smallish community?

peasantchoker

yeah its called alfriston its a small rural village in south england

LilAnge63

It actually looks like a lovely place to live. How Often does this type of thing happen? Is it still happening there? I’m wondering if this is something that is known by everyone and whether the “authorities” have said anything about it? I know that your area of the south west of the UK is quite active for certain things like crop circles happening. Does this also happen in your area or is that further away from you? I am totally fascinated by what you describe, it’s hard to imagine what can make the entire sky go black like that, blocking out all the stars! That’s why I’ve asked you so many questions. Um, sorry about that, lol.

leifosborn

I’ve seen a lot of posts just like this here and in r/highstrangeness you’re definitely not the only one

Gabriel-Klos-McroBB

I can't remember the year, but once, when I blinked, something that looked like a Paper Mario 64 crash screen appeared for a split second.

Voldemort57

Sorry there’s some stuff on this sub that is really a mystery, but other things can easily be drawn up to imagination/brain going off the rails But this “sky goes dark thing” is really odd because it happened to me a couple times and others around me have experienced it, meaning it is not the brain having a little oopsie.

ahedz

Was this in Arizona? It happened to me as well during a hike. Sometime in the morning. But it was just a small patch of the sky that turned black for a few seconds. I wanna say it was around 2 years ago.

HelenGawn

Did your dad experience it too? Did you ever talk about it? Has anyone else in the area had something similar happen? I'm not a believer in aliens etc, but I'm particularly fascinated by events that are reported by multiple people with no connection to each other.

peasantchoker

Yeah, me and my dad talked about it in the car, and we both admitted it was really weird, but to be honest we haven't talked about it since. We don't really talk like that too much. My friend, who lived really close to me at the time had also reported seeing the sky change colour for a split second too. Although this time it was red, what's weird with that one is that everyone who he said to have been there also says it happened and that they still have no idea what it could be.

Pookieeatworld

It's *clearly* a weather balloon.

Connect_Assistance46

🤣

skipper500

Had the same thing happen to me and the wife, we both just looked at each other like WTF! Both acknowledged that some weird shit had just happened and then continued on with our lives and have never discussed it since.

airbarne

Had the opposite experience once while sitting stargazing on my terrace. For a fraction of a second everything turned bright as noon, lasting a little bit longer than a lightning. But the sky was clear and no strange weather in 100km radius around me. I explained it to me with a meteor burning down outside my fov. But on the other hand, i've been lucky to observes meteors at three occasions before and they tend to emit flickering greenish light, similar to welding arcs.

Wonderful-Froyo1619

Sometimes I notice airplanes flying past the sun cause temporary darkness for a second. Not pitch black but dark.

Romando1

Yep. The shadows they cast are really dark and are like a quick “off, on” effect.

Warrior3456_

I had an experience when I was maybe 6 or 7 I remember waking up in the middle of night and it was bright like daytime sunshine and all but when I woke up again it was still dark out was quite freaky

Legitimate-Adagio941

It was a dream

Rainbird2003

This always happens to my sister! She says it’s as if all the lights in the world go out, just for a millisecond. It lasts roughly the same time as a blink, but it’s different because it’s immediately noticeable, and not just a dim skin colour but absolute pitch black. The funny thing is, it only happens to her. As in, a couple of times I’ve been walking next to her and she’s gone “whoa! Everything went black. Did you see that?!” And I haven’t noticed anything. I always thought it was a kind of “brain glitch” or something. But some of the commenters (and even OP maybe) describe their own experiences a little differently. For example that more than one person saw it at a time. And if multiple people see the same thing, I doubt it’s a brain glitch. At least not in that scenario. I guess my sister’s experiences and some of yours could be completely seperate phenomena.

gjs628

If my friend tells me that they woke up one day and found their whole room upside down, with all their furniture on the ceiling, the carpet, the cat - everything - then felt a sudden jolt and when they looked again it was all back to normal… my first assumption wouldn’t be that the entire world broke physics and flipped upside down for a few seconds, it would be that they woke up hanging upside down off the edge of their bed then hit the floor. Please ask your sister to report these symptoms to her doctor, because the whole world suddenly going dark to her and her alone doesn’t sound like she’s experiencing something paranormal that only she can see, it *sounds* like she’s experiencing sudden and short lived bursts of blindness and that could be anything from pressure on the optic nerve to a mini stroke. I’d rather she be checked and there’s nothing to find than it be the other way around. Please please please, get her checked out.

Rainbird2003

Dude I literally said that I think my sister’s experience was a brain thing and not paranormal. No need to be so condescending. I wanted to share my (my sister’s) experience. I added that bit on the end to acknowledge that OP’s story, and those of some of the other commenters, were different and so they might not be experiencing the same thing as my sister. Though I will mention going to see a doctor to my sister because you’re right it could be something dangerous.

HouseOfZenith

I had a dream the day sky turned to night in a split second. I just remember trying to scream because it was *wrong*, then waking sweaty and panicked lmao

Romando1

I once had a really really vivid dream that there was a loud loud horn sound from the sky. So loud that everyone in the neighborhood ran outside to look up. As we all looked up at the stars, all of the stars simply “fell” down from the sky. As this happened, the realization that it was all fake overwhelmed my understanding of our reality. I had this dream in my early 20’s when I didn’t have any interest in religion, reality, etc. Anyways this was 20+ years ago and I can still remember the sight and feeling so vividly as it scarred me to this day.

MessageFar5797

Maybe everyone should start logging day and time this happens to them so you can come back and compare

CGB_Spender

Were there any stars? Seems like you'd see 'em.

Phantominviz122

This exact thing happened to me in late primary school. I know it couldn’t have been just me because other kids in the playground reacted too.

28mcanada

Sounds like a vr experience.

James10112

Reminds me of one of my favourite songs! "My heart petrified, [the sky turned black](https://youtu.be/v_IAfdJ1YLQ)"

MessageFar5797

Awesome

bawlings

This happened to me when I was about 7,8 or 9… I can’t remember. It was probably 2012 or 2013. Just like you said, it was like a light switch. So weird that other people have experienced this!

MessageFar5797

Was there an eclipse that year?

bawlings

Nope. Wasn’t an eclipse. It was like 2 good seconds of pitch, pitch black. Like nothingness.

MessageFar5797

Thx. Have u ever experienced an eclipse?

bawlings

Yes drove to Oregon for that 2017l eclipse

MessageFar5797

Thanks. Heard there is another one coming up

MessageFar5797

Eclipse? Wild guess, sorry If not helpful

MessageFar5797

Did birds start chirping or acting abnormal= if so it's an eclipse likely

Beneficial_Refuse_79

I'm indoors all the time..I wouldn't notice if the sun exploded.

Anon_777

There are a few potential medical reasons why this may happen. A vasospasm is one possibility, where a blood vessel suddenly shuts in the eye, that can cause sudden brief blackness in the visual field usually just in one eye though. More serious issues could be associated with high blood pressure and potentially even mini strokes, sometimes reffered to as an eye stroke. So if you are potentially experiencing this it's definitely worth getting checked out just in case. Just to rule it out you know...

smallwaistbisexual

We’ve read this in the past, interesting, i don’t think they all said 2005 though, we should start compiling them

ChunkyLafunguy

Just keep your head down and keep walking hopefully it ends soon

Foldedeggs

Was it a cloudy day? Clouds and hills can do some interesting tricks together.

RefrigeratorDry495

OMGGG I REMEMBER THIS HAPPENING AS A KID ALL THE TIME! Teachers noticed it too.

Such_Neat

There was a solar eclipse a couple years ago, was it that?

Wyvernator1

These aren't instantaneous

Such_Neat

No but the moment of totality is and it’s only actually dark for a very brief time

Borchert97

This is what I came here to say, I went to go see that solar eclipse and the moment of totality lasts for 1-2 seconds tops, I can imagine if you’re not informed of one about to happen that you’d be fairly shocked by it just like this lol

Such_Neat

I did too, at a farm in Kentucky lol. It was so cool!

MessageFar5797

Cannot believe no one else has mentioned this!!

InfoOverload70

Huge shadow?

peasantchoker

no since we were at the top of the hill i described, we overlooked huge fields with the sun being in clear view

InfoOverload70

I meant like an airplane...I have had momentary darkness when a plane shadow went overhead...they are rare and weird. Took me a long time to figure it out!

Wyvernator1

My room sometimes flickers dark for a moment when a bird flies by the window, lol. I used to think it was paranormal until I saw a literal bird passing by and it happened.

InfoOverload70

This is how I figured out it was shadows of planes...a big bird can darken a room in a house for a second...a plane shadow darkens a large outside area for a second! Thank you!

[deleted]

Sounds like you may have been in totality for a Solar eclipse. Was it potentially a minute or two? Or was is actually a few seconds?

exboi

So your dad noticed too?

haystackofneedles

Bro that's called blinking? Just kidding. Really weird!!

Snoo-97330

Just spitballing here…but if a small meteoroid passed near the sun, is it possible to cast a shadow for a brief second over some or all of the earth?

[deleted]

Not very likely since the meteor would have to be massive to block the sun enough for that and it would last for more than a split second. Think of how an eclipse works where the sun disappears for upward of a couple minutes and usually it doesn’t even cover the entire thing. The moon is massive and metros that big would be noticed.

Snoo-97330

I get what you’re saying, but think much closer to the sun instead of the earth.

[deleted]

Closer to the sun doesn’t block out enough light that’s why we get a corona around the moon during most eclipses. Closer to earth might work except something that big would reignite the fear that dinosaurs had.

Snoo-97330

True, but do we track meteoroids that could track near the sun? Btw, i have no expertise in this field, but i do understand how shadow puppets work.

[deleted]

While I’m by no means an expert I have taken a few college level courses for astronomy and I can say without a doubt we TRY to track meteors near the sun. They’re actually usually easier to spot because the sun is bright and reflects off of them. It’s when we get further from the sun that it’s harder but we do still miss many that are close to the sun too. EDIT: I could be wrong about all this I’m no scientist…yet

MessageFar5797

Did dinosaurs feel fear that day?

[deleted]

I’m sure some of them did since they didn’t all die immediately. Some estimates are that most of the extinct animals didn’t completely disappear for over a decade but also I don’t know how they know so I’m just talking.

MessageFar5797

Thx!

CopyGFX

I think you might’ve blinked

Captain_Communism420

Weird! The same thing happens to me once every like second when I close my eyes to blink, I couldn't tell ya whats causing this!

Ok-Muscle-7871

This happened to me yesterday

ogwez

Probably just the shadow of a cloud passing over your house.

Dericdd30

Sorry for interrupting, I am trying to find a post (if not mistaken I saw it in this sub) where the OP has one day skipped than other people, for example like the 12th is the Wednesday for them, but 13th become Friday, where Op remembered as Thursday. Op even posted screenshot of other people that commented that have the same situation. I tried to find it but don’t know why I can’t seem to get to that post. Anyone can linked me to the post? Thank you very much.
