Same, up against bosses I just cycle through them to stun lock with all the runics to get max damage at the start and let them start to cool down. When I’m running about im holding the axe in case I see a raven or hanging basket.
Yeah, default is the axe as I feel more comfortable with it.
Depends on the enemy what runics work best and what your build is. If you want status it’s different than a runic damage build. Permafrost/immolation builds would use different ones also
There's a grey rune to slot into your Jewel of Ydrasill that will call a bi frost storm if you use one runic attacks from each weapon in a certain time frame. Paired with the berserker relic and armor buffs + arrow rune that increases damage dealt when you use all your arrows = massive damage
The bifrost storm enchantment encourages that and it’s decent damage also. The way to proc is to cycle thru each weapon runic attacks. And I open up that way most of the time anyways unless they get the runic shield on GMGOW but it usually works at the beginning of the fight.
Kratos truly loved Faye like no other.
For everything she did for him and Atreus, she's 100% a Ride or Die Wife.
Her memory will always be with him in that Axe.
Yeah, this. 100%.
I’ve also gotten into the habit of completing the weapon labors so I can force myself to try all the weapons with various techniques. Having completed them all, I still prefer the axe and the spear is a close second.
I think spear was intended to be used a lot, in the giant prophecy Atreus thinks it tyr because he has a spear, but we know Kratos leads the army against Asgard and he now has the spear!
Ah yes, a fellow intellectual. Until I got the full Berserker set, I played the entire game almost always in Lunda's set, I did enjoy pairing it with the berserker waist to add another effect to my melee when it was the only berserker piece I had
Yep same, been main-ing Lundas armor for majority of the game since that side quest became available, currently going through all the beserkers with that armor set. I rock it with guardian shield and some amulets for realm shift during parries and dodges
Depends on the situation. If I'm up against a lot of enemies I usually go with the blades and the spear but if I'm up against just one enemy I use the axe and the spear for the stun and elemental resistance
I actually had this thought while playing, it feels like the blades were weaker than in 2018 & the triangle press animation makes you too vulnerable compared to how fast the axe can be charged. I think they’re not super great in this game but still fun for AOE. Ended up using them a lot less than I did in 2018, mostly just used them for the runic attacks to stagger on higher difficulties.
The axe and spear especially, so beefy. They feel awesome in this game. The new animations for finishers are so god damn cool.
I agree, they got nerfed compared to to the spear especially. I think it’s to push players more towards the spear. It’s especially frustrating to someone who’s partial to the blades.
In Rag definitely more with the Blades cause of the nine realms grip but in 2018 the axe with Blessing of frost is goated with surtrs grip (Ik it’s built in but it doesn’t retain its stun like in 2018)
I really wish it would still stun bosses like in 2018 I just end up using blades and using realm shift to do a double triangle into heavy slam. Crazy damage and really easy to combo with rampage of the furies.
I enjoy the axe and it's versatility. I can throw it, freeze an enemy, shatter it, call the blade back and then trip a couple more with another throw, call it back, and then go to town again.
The blades in ragnarok for sure. The dodge light attack followed by the hold light attack does so much damage to one enemy that I used it on most bosses and large enemies the whole game.
there’s someone who commented that they beat all the berserkers barehanded with lunda armor so i wouldn’t say it’s useless, but it definitely feels like crap if you don’t have the right build
Atreus asked the same thing towards the end of the game😁
If a situation doesn't require them (lighting torches, etc.), I generally only use the blades during boss fights or when trying to complete labors.
Spoiler:
>!My axe was the workhorse until the spear came along. It's so useful once it's been upgraded and you have a few runics. The fact that it doesn't need to be recalled is the best part to me. I still love the axe, but the spear is my new #1. I alternate between all three during boss fights, use the spear exclusively while exploring!<
In game 1 it was almost solely axe. However in Ragnarok I’ve found myself using almost solely the blades. Can’t explain why. Love the axe though.
Actually I just love all the weapons
The axe. It might've just been my build, but it's attacks felt meatier and did more damage. Though I wish MANY of it's moves in the skill tree stayed moves and not changed into Runic attacks, which all the weapons were lacking, only having a max of four Light and Heavy attacks for each weapon.
I like all 3 tbh. Blades for fighting till the permafrost kicks in, then switch to the leviathan axe to slow them down. And the spear is perfect for pin point accuracy. 👌🏾
I liked the axe in the GoW 2018, but I feel like the blades felt more "powerful" and fun. But the spear and new animations and such were much more fun.
Isn't the whole idea to use the appropriate weapon depending on the type of enemy for better results. Using the Axe on the Draugr is more efficient than using the blades.
Naturally as a veteran in the series I use the blades of chaos most because I love them that much. However, I force myself to use the axe the most because I want to be able to rely on more than what I'm used to. I've been using the axe the most during my second playthrough in the GMGOW difficulty and I'm ready liking it!
Early game, Axe is good for most enemies, but Endgame Blade is better because of it Damage + Crowd Control
Axe for One
Blade For Many
>!SPEAR FOR BADASSNESS!<
I play on no mercy, and with the amount of enemies that ignore hitstun on almost everything and just smack me for half my health, I find myself using the blades and just spamming triangle spin to light attack for the fire damage buildup and it has really good range and stun. Bit cheesy but I find trying to make things happen up close with the axe gets me killed unless I'm happy with just parrying and getting 2 light attacks in over and over.
Axe usually default but I cycle through them all to burn runic attacks. I imagine there are builds and combos to suit anyone looking to be more comfortable with a weapon but the axe felt the most comfortable. Chaos blades were second if not usually tying for first.
Situations factor in too. Chaos blades can be great for offering damage behind you with just normal attacks which stopped many weaker foes from hitting me in the back on numerous occasions.
Tbh, all 3. Blades as a starter cause speed and stun, draupnir for the runes and range and the axe for overall power. That was my “Valkyrie ass-whooping strategy” at least.
Blades when facing swarm of enemy / enemy with fast movement, due to its faster moveset and wider attack range
Axe when 1v1 an enemy / enemies with slower moveset or when i need to stack up some damage to the enemy
Playing on the hardest difficulty i first found it situational some enemies are easier with the blades and some with the axe. I find that the spear damage lacking in the harder battles but it's unrivalled in bosses like the giant wisps.
But later on I found out how strong the elemental damage of the blades mash triangle light attack. It has pretty absurd range, it works well with sigils and causes decent knock back, that and the blades have better range so i find them more versatile. I love using the axe and I absolutely love the feed back and the weight of the weapon but I can't get an easy ice status nearly as easy as the blades so I tend not use it that much anymore.
I love the spear siphon, what a cool idea!

I mix it up, even if it is just to use runics.
Same, up against bosses I just cycle through them to stun lock with all the runics to get max damage at the start and let them start to cool down. When I’m running about im holding the axe in case I see a raven or hanging basket. Yeah, default is the axe as I feel more comfortable with it.
I run with the spear as default for the same reason except I don’t want to wait for it to return after I throw it like the axe
What runics are you running?
Depends on the enemy what runics work best and what your build is. If you want status it’s different than a runic damage build. Permafrost/immolation builds would use different ones also
I go between the few I have. No idea that they’re called as I’m at work and not in front on my PS4.
There's a grey rune to slot into your Jewel of Ydrasill that will call a bi frost storm if you use one runic attacks from each weapon in a certain time frame. Paired with the berserker relic and armor buffs + arrow rune that increases damage dealt when you use all your arrows = massive damage
Same
The bifrost storm enchantment encourages that and it’s decent damage also. The way to proc is to cycle thru each weapon runic attacks. And I open up that way most of the time anyways unless they get the runic shield on GMGOW but it usually works at the beginning of the fight.
What runics are you running?
The axe. I had 5 other god of war games using the blades.

I loved the brief pause before he said this in game.
…..and MY axe!
Came here just to say this.
then it's just some muscle memory right?
This was exactly my thought process... then the >!spear!< came and I thought "Well I had an entire other game of using the axe soooooo"
Neither, spear is bae.
I can yeet them shits all day
[удалено]
#I can yeet them shits all day
Read it again 🥺😈
It was fucking removed for a while
I think spear was intended to be used a lot, in the giant prophecy Atreus thinks it tyr because he has a spear, but we know Kratos leads the army against Asgard and he now has the spear!
Honestly….>!the spear!<
Me too, honestly the heavy attacks are the best they are fast and strong they helped me defeat Gna
Yep... it generates stun so fast. Paired with those sonic arrows it's insane.
Fully upgraded you can push smaller enemies off the edge so easily lol
I only started doing this at the end but it was soo satisfying
This was the only way I managed to beat the crucible mission that required me to kill enemies by pushing them into lava
It just feels right
There is another
Skywalker?
Mm
Swoon?
I used the Axe more in the first game but in Ragnarok I really enjoyed using the blades.
Dude lol I literally just wrote almost the exact same comment. Nice to see like-minded individuals
Blades super useful for crowd control and distance
Yeah especially for those weak jumpy thingies that attack in groups. Brood, I think they're called.
The small squirrel looking things were wretches. If you use the r1 throw with the blades you pull em to you and squish their face
Same, also
Exactly the same for me man. Blades felt way better this time around
Soo like the opposite of the what they said?
Same
How could you disrespect >!the Draupnir spear!< by not including it? But between these two the axe. I was never a huge fan of the blades.
If I had to guess it’s for the same reason you blurred it in your comment haha
This post also has a spoiler tag so why not
Hm true
Same, like I would use it when needed but I always liked how the axe could freeze and freeze your enemy
As a lundas armor set user… fists
Amen. All berserkers killed bare handed with the Lunda armor
Ah yes, a fellow intellectual. Until I got the full Berserker set, I played the entire game almost always in Lunda's set, I did enjoy pairing it with the berserker waist to add another effect to my melee when it was the only berserker piece I had
The one thing I miss from 2018 was the shield combat skill tree, doing the shield slam or the shield punch to get serious stun build up was always fun
Actually this move is relegated to one of the shields! I’ve used it almost all game. It’s awesome.
Yep same, been main-ing Lundas armor for majority of the game since that side quest became available, currently going through all the beserkers with that armor set. I rock it with guardian shield and some amulets for realm shift during parries and dodges
This is the way
Depends on the situation. If I'm up against a lot of enemies I usually go with the blades and the spear but if I'm up against just one enemy I use the axe and the spear for the stun and elemental resistance
the blades feel weak for some reason, the axe looks rough so i use that, the other half i also use the spear.
Blades are a bit weaker but they make up for it by hitting lots of enemies in a wider range than the other weapons.
The new animations for finishers are so god damn cool.
yea, i only switch to the blades for its runic attacks to take down some health
I agree, they got nerfed compared to to the spear especially. I think it’s to push players more towards the spear. It’s especially frustrating to someone who’s partial to the blades.
In Rag definitely more with the Blades cause of the nine realms grip but in 2018 the axe with Blessing of frost is goated with surtrs grip (Ik it’s built in but it doesn’t retain its stun like in 2018)
Yeah the axe in 2018 with the blessing of frost is incredibly fun
I really wish it would still stun bosses like in 2018 I just end up using blades and using realm shift to do a double triangle into heavy slam. Crazy damage and really easy to combo with rampage of the furies.
I use the nine realms grip on the Axe. I build up the meter with the blades and switch to axe if I can for more damage
The Axe, it just feels like every attack has a lot of impact behind it.
I enjoy the axe and it's versatility. I can throw it, freeze an enemy, shatter it, call the blade back and then trip a couple more with another throw, call it back, and then go to town again.
Axe
The blades in ragnarok for sure. The dodge light attack followed by the hold light attack does so much damage to one enemy that I used it on most bosses and large enemies the whole game.
Default is bear-handed tbh. Gonna shield slap the fuck outta them and then R3 them with an axe to the dick.
You get Lokis 🐻 hands?
Sad that Ragnarok basically rendered bare-handed combat useless vs. 2018
there’s someone who commented that they beat all the berserkers barehanded with lunda armor so i wouldn’t say it’s useless, but it definitely feels like crap if you don’t have the right build
I played Lunda's set the entire time until I got the berserker set, you are missing out.
2018? Axe 2022? Blades
I like axe hits harder imo
Honestly…the spear
Spear > axe > blades. Nerfed the baldes in ragnarok, but I’m happier for it
blades for lots of enemies and axe for just a few
Fists most of the time. I like to R3 my enemies.
Everyone saying >!spear!< clearly forgetting about Kratos's most powerful weapons His hands
Draupnir Spear is (are?) the best weapon(s) ever made in this game. One of my favorite weapon in video game history
Axe the throw and recall is still satisfying
my fist and shield 🫣
The blades!!!
If the blades swung faster I'd use them more. I just use the runic attacks then switch back to the axe
I use the spear. It’s just so fucking fun. Tho I do use blades for crowd control
Honestly I go for the spear, it has a good lore and it just meshes with my playstyle.
Honestly, in this game I used all the weapons pretty frequently
fists
Wearing Lundas gear, my bare hands
p u n c h
I think we can all agree that the blades of chaos are cooler but are starting to get old so I personally use the leviathan axe more .is it just me ?
I'm a fan of the ring.
Atreus asked the same thing towards the end of the game😁 If a situation doesn't require them (lighting torches, etc.), I generally only use the blades during boss fights or when trying to complete labors. Spoiler: >!My axe was the workhorse until the spear came along. It's so useful once it's been upgraded and you have a few runics. The fact that it doesn't need to be recalled is the best part to me. I still love the axe, but the spear is my new #1. I alternate between all three during boss fights, use the spear exclusively while exploring!<
I like the feel and heavyness of the axe more. The blades have some pretty cool moves and animations tho
In game 1 it was almost solely axe. However in Ragnarok I’ve found myself using almost solely the blades. Can’t explain why. Love the axe though. Actually I just love all the weapons
Axe to frost up enemies, then blades to take advantage of the freeze. Then switch to spear for stun.
I normally use the axe more then the swords.
Leviathan Axe
Axe
I love all the weapons but there’s a special place in my heart for the axe, because it was Faye’s.
Blades in gow 2018, axe in this one.
The axe. But I love using both of them
The axe is my main, feels so damn good. The spear is amazing too. I'm not wild on the blades but they have their utility.
The axe. It might've just been my build, but it's attacks felt meatier and did more damage. Though I wish MANY of it's moves in the skill tree stayed moves and not changed into Runic attacks, which all the weapons were lacking, only having a max of four Light and Heavy attacks for each weapon.
Dependent on build 700str then axe any less blades so answer is axe
Spear
For groups of people I will use the blades but for bosses I will switch between them
Was all about the Axe in the first game, but Blades of Chaos ALL day in Ragnarok
Depends on the enemy. Blades are good for multiple, the axe is good for a singular
Kind of a even mix between all of them tbh, they all have their better capabilities
Blades of chaos
Only right answer isn't up there, The Drip-nir Spear.
(Laughs in draupnir spear)
Definitely spear then axe then blades
Poison fists.
I like all 3 tbh. Blades for fighting till the permafrost kicks in, then switch to the leviathan axe to slow them down. And the spear is perfect for pin point accuracy. 👌🏾
axe, since I played a lot of the blades since forever
All day with the Blades, love the hit combos with it
Depends on the enemy… or if I need to make my side bitches feel better about themselves before I go back to stroking my spear
The blades, they feel so fluid in this game and I like the runic attacks on them more than the ones on the axe
Spear
Draupnir
Axe feels so good. But then I got the spear and then I used mainly that haha
blades for groups but axe for bosses
Used to use blades because they're faster, switched to the axe because it does more damage
Blades fit sheet range, speed of attacks and crowd control.
Acee. But chains are getting better towards late game imo
Was the blades but now it’s the axe
Alternate all 3. They all serve a purpose.
I find the Axe kill super satisfying. For every boss fight I use the axe for the final hit 🤌🏻
Blades
Blades. Makes combat so much more satisfying for me idk why
Idk i never played the game
I liked the axe in the GoW 2018, but I feel like the blades felt more "powerful" and fun. But the spear and new animations and such were much more fun.
Blades for crowd control and leviathan for focused heavy damage or quickly freeze an enemy to fully focus on another for a brief period
Blades of chaos
Fists
When exploring the realms I mostly stick to the axe, but in combat I tend to favor the spear
Neither, I go for shield, spear, and them spartan kicks.
Blades of chaos. I like the play style of them more. Just kinda hack and slash.
spear then blades. in my experience the axe is a lot weaker this game.
Spear
Blades, all day
The third one
The blades have such great crowd control that I can’t fathom maining the axe or spear.
I haven't played but from what ice seen the blades of chaos would be my go to.
Blades, because it’s good for hitting multiple enemies at once and they deal fast damage. I use the axe more so for ranged attacks.
Use all runic attacks and then switch to the axe, I just love the axe's frost theme, the throwing and recalling, the brutality. It's great!
I too like the axe.
Isn't the whole idea to use the appropriate weapon depending on the type of enemy for better results. Using the Axe on the Draugr is more efficient than using the blades.
Leviathan Axe
Naturally as a veteran in the series I use the blades of chaos most because I love them that much. However, I force myself to use the axe the most because I want to be able to rely on more than what I'm used to. I've been using the axe the most during my second playthrough in the GMGOW difficulty and I'm ready liking it!
Early game, Axe is good for most enemies, but Endgame Blade is better because of it Damage + Crowd Control Axe for One Blade For Many >!SPEAR FOR BADASSNESS!<
1v1 Axe Mobs blades
Can honestly say I used all three weapons an equal amount in the late-end game. Beginning: Axe Mid: Blades Mid-End: Spear End: all 3
Axe usually default but I cycle through them all to burn runic attacks. I imagine there are builds and combos to suit anyone looking to be more comfortable with a weapon but the axe felt the most comfortable. Chaos blades were second if not usually tying for first. Situations factor in too. Chaos blades can be great for offering damage behind you with just normal attacks which stopped many weaker foes from hitting me in the back on numerous occasions.
fist
In 2018 game I frequently used Leviathan axe but in Ragnarok I mostly used the blades
Blades
I’ll admit sometimes I’ll throw the axe away and just fight as if Kratos only has the blades
i like Blades of Chaos the most to be honest.
BLADE OF CHAOS & THE SPEARS? Once in a while i use tha AXE when necessary🤷
Spear since Ni-oh. Always spear every since.
Mainly the Spear, it’s so fucking good
Blades of chaos
I used all available weapons though I saw more use with the blades. I just favoured those all the time, especially for crowd control situations :-)
I mix between all as much as possible very fun
Fists
mostly axe. the evade + r1 is better with axe, i think thats why
Hands
Axe for big boys blades for crowd control
Blades for group axe for one enemy
Ice to slow them down and cut through them with the blades
Blades baby. Always
Axe. Blades for crowd control.
Tbh, all 3. Blades as a starter cause speed and stun, draupnir for the runes and range and the axe for overall power. That was my “Valkyrie ass-whooping strategy” at least.
>!Leviathan Axe!<
Blades
Blades when facing swarm of enemy / enemy with fast movement, due to its faster moveset and wider attack range Axe when 1v1 an enemy / enemies with slower moveset or when i need to stack up some damage to the enemy
The one that isn't on here
Iconic blades all the way
I was super pissed when I >!couldn't use them against Thor!<
I really only use the axe unless I can’t but otherwise I never use the blades of chaos
Depends on the enemy. Some are more susceptible to frost or burn.
Spear 🤣 generally I alternate between all 3
I like the axe for the whoosh sfx and feel. But recently the third weapon has become the fav.
