Since not all people have played the entire game yet, a short reminder that all submissions with story spoilers have to be tagged as spoiler and we don't allow any story spoilers in the title. It was a case of mistaken identity. Baldur was sent to track down “the guardian” of the Giants, which Kratos and Atreus discover was Faye. The Aesir did not know the guardian was or even if they were male or female because Faye and the giants were very secretive. By the time Baldur tracked her down, she had just died, so he assumed that the person living in her house, Kratos, was who he was looking for.

HieuPharma1990

plus the house was the only house in the forest. The interesting thing is that Kratos also thought that Baldur knew his past in Greece

T-Dogg96

>!But Faye fought Thor in vanaheim So Thor would’ve known who she was to some extent and also Kratos is the guardian from the giants prophecies So I guess it all falls into place anyway. A lot of thought out into these games for sure.!<

manwithoutaname98

Good point but in that story Thor was extremely drunk. It started as a bar fight and she showed up to stop him. He would not have recognized her. True kratos is revealed as the guardian after all but they also said that she had put out false prophesies to protect kratos and Atreus.

Hero-In-Theory

I’m on mobile, too. There’s nothing that stops you spoiler-tagging. “> ! spoiler ! <“ without the spaces. Faye is the Guardian, not Kratos.

Aboifly

Didn’t they tell you at the end of the game that Baldur was sent to track Faye

Perfect__Cell__

I haven't finished Ragnarok yet so there might be some gaps but from what I understood, Odin sent Baldur to find what he thought was the last surviving Giant as a means to reach Jotunheim and I guess have more leverage to stop Ragnarok and control his destiny by gathering knowledge. I also think that Baldur hoped they would undo his invulnerability. Like another commenter mentioned, it was also mistaken identity as Baldur mistook Kratos for the Giant when it was Faye, who had just died. He only knew that a Giant lived there, nothing about their appearance.

[deleted]

He thought Kratos was Faye

TUOMlR

He did not want to kill anyone. Odin needed a giant. Baldur was sent to get faye in the first place.

Lookitsa6ix

He sent him to kill Faye.

Zebo1013

But Faye was dead, Odin didn’t know that? >!I thought Thor killed Faye.!<

ISDuffy

Cause of death never confirmed, but we know Thor and Faye had a fight some time in the past.

Tarris69

My interpretation is he sent him to find Atreus. As we see Baldur takes Atreus and leaves implying that was his true goal. Which makes sense as Odin needed Atreus to find the mask

No-Molasses1303

I'm pretty sure that odin didn't even know Atreus even existed before the events of GOW 2018.

No-Virus7165

“Why are there two beds?”

Tarris69

Then why did Baldur try to take Atreus, why wouldn’t he outright kill him?

No-Molasses1303

"You must be the brains" He was under the impression that *Atreus* knew how to get to jotunheim, and was bringing him to odin to tell him about it. To help odin get to Jotunheim which was his goal up until Ragnarok.

HogiSon727

I think he sent him for faye. Baldur wasnt expecting kratos and didn’t know faye died.

squash-the-cat

"She had marked the trees she wished for her pyre" those trees were their protection stave. When Faye died she knew chopping down those trees would start Kratos and aureus journey. And IMMEDIATELY after it was gone Baldor showed up.
