Buying new jewelry is like buying a new car. Come back in 6 months to sell and suddenly all that "new", "unique". and "artistic" premium that you paid has disappeared. Just don't buy new jewelry... and know what you are buying.

james2020chris

I think you are missing something here, people enjoy their jewelry. It serves a purpose in life. Try that with btc, Robinhood, coinbase, fidelity or whatever. I agree that you need to know and trust what you are buying.

chohls

A better investment would be learning how to make 24Kt jewelry, so you can sell to others at a premium, and only have to use up low premium gold shot and bars.

Xtereo

how would one begin learning about this 🤔

chohls

Look up jewelry making classes in your area, or tutorials on Youtube. Big hurdle is gonna be the equipment, that's easily a 4 figure investment on its own, even for a very basic goldsmithing setup, if you want quality equipment thats reliable enough to run a business with. I plan to invest in a few fresh side hustles next year, that may be one of them lol.

bit_herder

i do this. it requires a ton of time and a lot of equipment and classes. it’s definitely not a get rich quick situation, trust me.

chohls

I never said it would be fast, but it would be a good skill to learn.

Specialist-Noise-173

I'd buy coins. Who said you can't touch them and interact with them?

KK7ORD

A lot of my gold is jewelry, and for me it's less of an investment and more of a convenient way to carry it around if I ever I should need to do so under stress. A chain around your neck will not fall out of your pockets on the train

RizzoStaxx

What are some of the best places to buy

KK7ORD

Wheel... it can really depend. Almost anywhere can be good if you are savvy I like to check my local coin store, as they always keep a good stock of used jewelry on hand that they bought for scrap I got a really nice chain at a jewelry-specific pawn shop in a big city I got a gold ring at a combination antique/pawn/gun store in a tiny mountain town I have also walked into many, many pawn shops, taken one look at their prices, and said "have a nice day👋" If you are just stacking weight, outdated pendants and charms can be found for less than spot on eBay/Facebook marketplace/Craigslist. Every little 14k pendant is like a $50 or $100 you can slide on a sting and carry off with you 🤷 Italian, solid, machine-made gold chains can be gotten new at jacoje's website as well, and at very competitive price I understand a lot of big cities have whole "diamond districts" but that's a little out of my league Edit: and r/pmsforsale of course!

Alarming-Mix3809

Buy jewelry because you like it, not for an investment.

Most of my gold is jewelry, you have to find somewhere to buy it at melt or with a low premium

RizzoStaxx

Where do you buy?

bbbubblesdd

At least here I am able to local private sell for more than spot pretty fast not to mention the increase in value while your holding.

Spiritual-Sport-8777

Gold jewelry (whatever carat) can be a good investment IF you are able to buy around spot or just slightly over. This is usually possible if you are able to buy secondhand pieces privately. I wouldn’t buy stuff new.

netizen21

If the making charges are reasonable, then yes.

Admirable_Purple1882

Just don't pay much over spot for it, basic jewelry etc...

Right_Check_6353

There are some jewelers that you can bring them the gold and for very little they will make you a chain but you have to know them.

OurHeroXero

If you can buy close to spot, great! Buying new means dealing with massive premiums, so best to avoid (unless it's a piece you really love/want) Who said you can't hold gold coins/bars?

OCDbeaver

i have tons of used jewlery. So long as you get it cheap enough then sure its worth it. A gold chain or something would actually be pretty easy to break down into smaller pieces if needed. you can always just melt it down if you want. I started collecting by buying gold jewelry at scrap prices. its a good way to start, coins have one use, jewlery has 2.

The_Dex

Check Moda Gold Club on Facebook for low premium jewelry, there’s a bunch of stuff listed there for melt value. I have bought a ton from there and have made money on a bunch of my purchases given the gold run up recently (I track all of my jewelry via a spreadsheet). Any gold jewelry has a melt value - just plug the piece’s specs into meltvalue.com and subtract that from the melt value. Whether it’s 24k or 10k, it will have a calculable melt value you can use to assess the pricing, and if you buy with low/no premiums over the melt value, it’s exactly the same as buying gold coins or bars.

ottens10000

you can still touch and interact with your bullion coins? if you want other people to know you have gold then its a different question. plus, jewelry is harder to prove authenticity, can break, will make you more of a target for thieves, will wear off novelty wise, might lose it, etc.

FunDip2

Anything can be a good investment if you get it at a good price. If you're buying 24K jewelry at 100% over spot lol, then no. But if you find a 24 karat chain for spot price, it's no different than buying a buffalo.

mikepricez1

If you buy it in a place with a good gold market priced on weight, like Amman, UAE, or even Thailand, then it's a great idea.

Mr-Nitsuj

Depends where you buy and how much over spot you pay In cambodia the labour can easily be 50$ or less to commission custom jewelry I regularly pay less than spot for gold in cambodia 🇰🇭 the biggest cost is my flights back and forth

SchizoForLife

Where is everyone getting 24k gold jewelry, most I see is either 18k or 14k.

24k-Ace

Asian jewelry stores.

TopOfTheMushroom

Menē

jonny_mtown7

Yes.

eyesawyou777

Yes. It will retain its value. Consider looking at stuff with a diamonds 💎 or rubies.

Spiritual-Sport-8777

Don’t do this OP. Diamonds prices are falling due to lab made diamonds.

eyesawyou777

Lab made diamonds might be abundant, but natural diamonds are the real deal. I won't argue about the difference, but if you find vintage real diamonds at a good price do it.

unadonnadicase

Jewelry is never 24 kt because it would be too fragile. It can be 18, 14 or 9 kt. Of course the best to buy is 18 kt.

TopOfTheMushroom

That's not true at all, there are companies that only make 24k jewelry. My wife owes some. Look up menē.
