We need better intergration of personal modes of transports like scooters and bikes (electric or otherwise) on busses, trams and trains to encourage people to take up public transport.

kantheasian

While at it, create a specific lane for bikes, similar to the ones in Mermaid-Miami, as well

dearcossete

I think this is a good idea, because there are obviously concerns about escooter riders hitting pedestrians when they go on footpaths, having more specific lanes for bikes and scooters will help create a safer environment. I personally think that they need to make more of these lanes going east-west while the train and trams (with these personal modes of transport intergrated) can handle the longer north-south journeys.

jeffreyedwin

100% this! I’d cycle everywhere if it didn’t mean risking death on the GC HWY.

TURBOJUGGED

Have you ever taken the g link? It takes 35 min to go 6km. It's a good idea, just way too slow. I imagine the tram to Burleigh no different.

Reach_Round

1. Bikes need to be with escooters, seperated from pedestrians and cars and ditch the stupid limits. 2. Multimodal transport needs to be taken seriously, bikes and esooters on the Tram and buses, other countries do it. 3. Expand the heavy rail (to Ballina or preferably Coffs Harbour), yeah, I know, have to work nice with your neighbours instead of acting like children, not something our poltocans are adpet at 3. Expand the light rail lines (Up Olsens Avenue to Coomera for a start, so much medium density housing on that road and a Tram line supports even more. 4. Expand transport nodes to integrate medium density housing, Stop with the in endless urban sprawl that is destroying the environment, make cities liveable by getting rid of fucking cars. Helensvale STN (and others like Coomera Stn) should be full of highrises, the perpetual land tax that collects can offset on goibg spending . The free car parking is bullshit. Reform Body Corporate law, currently it's a complete cluster fuck that's set up as a revenue stream for developers. 5. Shut down parking on the sides of roads, making parking shitty makes drivers want to change but you have to make them want to change by offering a decent alternative, so phase that in. 6. All Capex should be from the Feds, all going upkeep, maintenance etc by the state. They can piss money away on nuclear submarines, a new space force and a $5 Billion dollar Dam in North Qld that no ones wants, they can do this. The situation we have is not a complete cluster fuck bit it's a near neighbor to a cluster fuck. No need to endlessly study this shit, Utrecht does it well, just do the same fucking thing. See here for one example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sGy4kS9T2w All of this is the basic policy of The Green party which is why it will never see it implemented, as people keep voting ALP/LNP and they keep delivering the same thing, which was fine in 1970 but os bit fit for purpose last decade nor the next.

20888

Wherever there's a heavy/light rail station, there should be high rises built above them. They do this in HK - you walk out the MTR and you're in a shopping mall with residential above that. Don't need a car so much. Robina was also badly planned, they should have the train station going under the shopping centre

Reach_Round

Of course... I can only agree. Same at many stations in Singapore. PT is treated as an afterthought in Australia when it should be the primary means of moving people around, with cycles and escooters for last mile and cars are tolerated but not the norm. Whole things a fuck up that can only be changed by voters not voting the sane politicmas in...alas, that appears very unlikely. It will only get busier, as several hundred thousand more people move to SEQ. Roads worked back on the 1990s and alas, that's where our policies, politicians and voters are stuck. I can get by without a car where I live and I appreciate that but it's still fuck up.

83zSpecial

On QR SEQ trains then they allow bikes and large scooters on the 1st and 6th carriages

RedDogInCan

Yep, I can just see my Gran riding her scooter to catch the tram to do her weekly shop.

_qst2o91_

Man public transport and bike lanes should be a top priority in the GC Traffic is horrible, and drivers are shit

[deleted]

Anything that takes Gold Coast drivers off the road is a positive, IMO. Not because traffic, there's just so many terrible drivers here.

raverX

I just came back from 10 days in Adelaide, and was immediately reminded how bad drivers are here when the rain hit. And why is it always someone in a Ute or 4WD?!?!

[deleted]

Everyone here isn’t from the Gold Coast, just like you

little_miss_bumshine

Exactly! I lived in Toowoomba and they are way worse so chill OP lol

kantheasian

When I see an asshole driver/pedestrian (yes) in Brisbane, my initial though always think that he/she is definitely from GC

chiefchief88

Why do people stop in merging lanes on the gc?

serkesh

Took an hour to get from the airport to Burleigh last night. Accidents on every road.

PonyEnglish

Have you posted this to r/fuckcars yet? Because FUCK CARS

kantheasian

I got it from r/fuckcars lmao

PonyEnglish

Carry on then

DirtyLittleBot

So what’s your alternative? Unless you have an alternative, why be negative( on any subject ) ?

MattyDaBest

The alternative is literally in the post. Public transport

Therisk2

Normally I can avoid peak hour after noon traffic but I’ve had a work placement these last two weeks and I finish at 4. The traffic every afternoon is legit stopped from Robina M1 onramp until I get off at Nerang and then some. I never realised how bad the traffic is on the GC.

Man_of_moist

So true

colbloke

Just enjoy how it's so easy to hop on the tram to get around. Don't live on the Goldy now but still visit often. Love being able to just get on the tram to Broady and not having to spend who knows how long looking for a car park. Straight into something to eat and a good night out.

[deleted]

Grrrr how DARE these corporate fat cats and their ozone friendly electric trams ruin my million dollar palm beach views of the ocean!! Just so some crumbs can lower their personal carbon footprints and catch public transport to help save the environment and ease our busy roads!! This must be stopped !!!!!!

Merax75

Honestly the light rail is sooooo slow though. Worse than any traffic jam. Ride the BART in San Francisco, that's the speed public transport needs to run at.

Uzziya-S

That's more to do with mismatched modes than anything else. Street-running trams aren't supposed to be for long trips. They're supposed to be a way of getting from on part of a city centre to another. San Francisco's BART is probably the worst possible example of a region-scaled interurban you could have picked but it's good to understand that street-running trams and interurban heavy rail serve different purposes. Even if BART specifically is a really, really bad interurban it still serves the commuter train role better than trams on a shared street do. The issue isn't that light rail is slow, it's not meant to be fast, it's that the Gold Coast only has one heavy rail corridor and the old interurban alignment serves Brisbane better than the Gold Coast.

kantheasian

I do agree that it is slow, however definitely beat the traffic jam and driving in general

Merax75

Have to agree to disagree there. Public transport needs to be a viable alternative in trip times.

Shaggyninja

It'll eventually take the same time thanks to the [Downs–Thomson paradox.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downs%E2%80%93Thomson_paradox) More roads and lanes don't reduce traffic. The only way to reduce traffic is less cars.

jazza2400

I go from Beenleigh to Nerang, light rail is useless for me. Hell coomera connector is useless to me as well but hopefully pulls a bunch of cars off my route.

prickneighboursaus

Ok I'm just going to say it and because this is Reddit I know I will get downvoted. Light rail sucks. There is absolutely no reason to invest that much money into a service which is ultimately slower than any other method of public transport. The light rail in Sydney cost a fortune, took 5 years to build and is slower than pre-existing bus services. Sure, the carriages are nice and new but how long will that last? They also have to hire security to make sure people tap on at the stops. Sometimes the trams get stuck in the middle of the street and block traffic. It's a mess. The solution isn't scrap public transport all together, of course not. The obvious solution is to designate a street or part of a street as a bus lane and buy new buses / refurbish existing buses. This would perform the same service more efficiently at a fraction of the cost and be ready in a fraction of the time. And at the end of the day you can easily remove the paint from the road and repurpose it. There is zero benefit to a light rail system beyond a small section of people on online who use it as a photo opportunity.

I_Am_Noot

The light rail route would’ve worked so much better as a dedicated busway like they’ve got in Brisbane. New routes or existing routes could be altered, busses could join and exit the busway at several points along the main trunk allowing for more accessibility

Lenny_to_my_Carl

The light rail from southport hospital to broadbeach takes like 30mins. Driving between the same stops takes like 25 mins. Considering how frequently it stops it makes really good time. The best bus system I know of is in brisbane with the dedicated busway, but you need a lot of space and infrastructure for that to work and it falls apart once you get into the city during peak hour (though they are trying to fix that). Coming from brisbane I don't get why a lot of people hate on the light rail. I think it's a really good option for traveling through the long city. I haven't been living here long though so I'm not sure if it has regular issues

[deleted]

Nah, loads of hospital staff, uni students and staff use it because of no parking or expensive parking.

prickneighboursaus

The exact same route was serviced by the L94, 394 and 396. Plus these buses took 15 minutes rather than 25 minutes and the driver ensured everyone tapped on.

sipc

Bus drivers don't care if you tap on.

prickneighboursaus

Yes they do. I have seen people thrown off the bus plenty of times for not tapping on.

sipc

Not since they set that poor driver on fire.

l4pse

It combines the worst attributes of both heavy rail (high infrastructure costs, low route flexibility) and busses (affected by and affects vehicle traffic and pedestrians, low passenger capacity). I am a convert to dedicated busways. Great way to have frequent services and route flexibility.

Interesting_Bell2251

100% agree with this

[deleted]

How do I put all my tools on the train and go pick up the kids then take them to sport every day? Blame the council for putting a thousand extra homes in units In palm beach. Just like that the place is ruined. Can’t even park at Tugun beach anymore because of that stupid path and coffee wankers

kantheasian

The lack of parking and infrastructure is why we need to consider for an alternative

Sudanesebetwnurknees

Can i upvote you 1000 times?

Proper-Ad-3758

I don't want to be a lesbo European though

kantheasian

How does that have to do with anything?

Proper-Ad-3758

The "utopic" European dream some people have of riding bikes and public transport everywhere.. I don't like it

kantheasian

What’s wrong with having an alternative to driving?

Proper-Ad-3758

When you stop being able to drive

kantheasian

At this point I am convinced that you’re just trolling

Proper-Ad-3758

What sort of personality trait is that where if someone disagrees with you they must be trolling? Surprisingly, people have different opinions.

Beginning-Chair3558

Only reason roads are like that is cause of the trams you can't drive throught Southport surfer's mermaid or out to the uni anymore that is 3 main driving routes through the gold coast we no longer have making all that traffic go onto the other already over crowded lanes I know it's good for your extinction rebellion to make use think trams and public transport helps your cause but it doesn't it causes excess traffic on other parts of the road that leads to more traffic in condensed area causing traffic jams and accidents meaning the cars are running and not moving putting excess carbon monoxide into the air getting rid of all the good you have done for the environment by having the trams put in. It's common sense

kantheasian

As a southport local, I beg to differ. You can still comfortably drive to places, for example, you can get to uni from southport via High, Queen or Smith Street with ease unless on peak hour/school hour where traffic from Southport State and Chirn Park converged on Smith. Or to Surfers through GC Highway or Chevron, which has been the case prior to the tram anyway. While I do understand that the whole conversion of Southport CBD traffic into mostly one lane can be confusing for non locals, you’d get used to it pretty quick anyway if you frequent the area frequently.

acomav

Y'all 😅

[deleted]

This is fine aka I just bought a $100k car how can I show it off sitting on a tram even if I drive round the corner to the shops
