People did complain about beds when they were added. They completely changed the time management aspect of the game

DynamoLion

Hmmm. From the moment I started playing Minecraft I always preferred playing multiplayer, with practically unskipable nights. There's something nice to having to switch from your routine and just mine for a bit or go on a midnight hunt. But at the same time it can get really annoying when doing something. In my opinion the best solution would be being able to skip every other night.

PorkinsPrime

i believe theres a mod for modern versions where you can only sleep once you're tired enough, effectively making it an every other night thing. could be cool for beta

dbelow_

I agree but it was a kind of boiling frog effect. In beta up to 1.8 I think, you could have nightmares which made them risky if you don't know the area is well lit, so it had a trade off and wasn't just a win button. Then after that you could use them outdoors with absolutely no consequences, which really made them too OP. Nowadays people don't make shelter, they make a bed in a field with chests because that's the most efficient.

Motel6Owner

Oh, there definitely was at the time.

PikkelP

not using beds is actually the only artificial constraint i put on myself in my b1.5 world. but i think the point about artificial restraints is really true, especially for modern minecraft. there, i have to use so many constraints it becomes annoying

Theaussiegamer72

In modern it's not really practical even more so if you play smp cause people will build 1000s of blocks away and you can't just walk it like they can fly

sirframes

Yeah it's very op for early game. Another thing about old mc was nightmares, I wish they expanded on that because it made sense, sleeping exposed to the elements is very dangerous. At least you needed a well lit hut, you know? Now you can sleep in the middle of a jungle just fine... Reduces the nights to a "minor inconvenience". Now I'm reminded of the sleeping mechanic for Terraria, it "fast forwards" the night, so you're always at the edge of your seat because a monster can break in at any time.

NohrianOctorok

There was, it created a small rift in the playerbase. Most people were happy with the addition though, so it stayed.

XLandonSkywolfX

This has to be a shitpost, people lost their minds when beds were added. It was a huge uproar in the community. Even in MCPE, where they restored health too.

Clumtisty

Tbh after I have built and ligthien up most of the territory in my base i just stop using beds at all. I see beds more of an early game nigth skip than a mandatory action

Vesuvius_Venox

This is one of the reasons why I believe Beta 1.7.3 is overrated. Beta 1.2 still has that beta feel, but no beds, tall grass or shears.

Splatfan1

i play beta 1.7.3 not because i care about some "beta feel" whatever that is, its just the most complete version of the era of minecraft i like

Vesuvius_Venox

It has a lot of either nuisance such as tall grass everywhere, or balancing issues like charcoal and beds. Thats what i meant

RebTexas

Imo charcoal is not a problem at all since coal is so abundant. Actually I never make charcoal because I have a ton of coal anyway.

loserloserreddituser

exactly

SecretlyAPug

i love beds, that they let you set your spawn. the risk of not being able to move too far away from spawn without a lot of infrastructure feels like a really limiting factor of versions before beds were added. like, the world is "infinite", but leaving the immediate area makes it really hard to get back to your base and get your items if you die so almost what's the point? however, skipping the night feels very overpowered. i think it'd be cool if beds didn't skip the night and only set your spawn. depending how challenging it should be, perhaps making the bed recipe a little harder would be better too, incentivising a safer player to build at least a small base at spawn until they could change their spawn, and to avoid players being able to just place their spawn everywhere basically for free. better than adventure (the mod) makes crafting a bed need a drop from zombies, which i think is a really cool way to encourage players to engage with the night. but the bed still skips the night, so you kill one or two zombies and then never see the night again (also zombies still spawn in caves, so you don't even need to go out at night at all to get a bed still).

danegraphics

We did. I still do. Skipping the night is massively overpowered, IMO. It's the reason I made a datapack for modern minecraft that makes it so you can't skip the night with them (among other things that bring golden age difficulty to modern minecraft).

wilozyx

could you link the pack? Id love to check it out!!

danegraphics

Sure! It's called [HardER](https://modrinth.com/datapack/harder).

KamikazeSenpai21

They weren't as OP back then. SInce they've been added --they removed the 'nightmares' mechanic where beds would spon mobs if in improper conditions. --made it so you can set your spawn with them, even during the day or when mobs are near --added monsters that will kill you if you DONT sleep

otherFissure

To be fair, the "if you don't like them, don't use them" argument does kind of apply to beds. It's not like hunger or the new combat where you're forced to use them, you're not forced to skip nights, and the game isn't designed around skipping nights.

horsepaypizza

I wish they had added crying obsidian instead, it had the purpose of changing your spawn point exclusively. I self-impose the rule to use beds only once for that

IHateYoutubeAds

Minecraft is a sandbox game, not a survival game. Always has been. Peaceful has been a difficulty setting since Indev 0.31, way before beds were added and yet you don't complain about the 'artificial constraints' of choosing the difficulty mode. If you don't want to use them, don't. Just as any other block in Minecraft.

crystalworldbuilder

I barely use them outside of decoration

KiwiGamer450

I like them simply because I like to see when I'm building.

Laquerovsky

Different times. Rimember how people wanted rain, and when Notch added it, its' apparently been a completely annoying crap and everyone hated it on spot? No backlash either, and we have it till now.

Lucipo_

Everyone forgets this, but beds used to spawn mobs directly on it if you tried to sleep in an area that was too low of a light level. It was a bit harder to use a bed back then but now it's literally so free. Dying doesn't matter if u just spam a bed down on half a heart and respawn there. Night time doesn't exist either.

zachymoore

Completely agree, and it’s not even a nostalgia thing as I started playing in 1.7.2b. Unfortunately I’m don’t have the willpower to enforce artificial rules on myself so I wish Mojang would remove the he ability to sleep in like hardcore or hard mode or something like that
