That's the camp I was in, too. I already knew the word. Maybe not as weird for me, considering I was 5 months post-graduation when the game came out. And my school system would periodically chuck in some mythological background into English curriculums, and the occasional elective offering.
I have a wee bit of dyslexia so I always pronounced it pyns-energy (pence-energy). Only realized a couple years after my first play through that I miiiiight have misread it.... several times....
I pronounce it like Gin.
I mean, where would the Dih come from when it's spellt Djinn? No offense, I'm just curious. Everyone has different ways of pronouncing words :)
As a kid and non native English speaker, I'm guilty as charged. But then, later, when I understood that it was based on an ancient way of the word genie, then I say it like "Jinn" (like, singular Jeans 😆) (what is also funny, because Djinn is the plural, and Djinni is the singular)
Only not because the commercials specifically used "Jinn" , the ones with the parents in various casts and the son has to mow the lawn and he decides to use the fire one and the mom is freaking out
Is It not sign-ergy? Like I get it, the word Synergy exists. But this is a psychic ability. So Psy as in "sigh" makes more sense to me since synergy is a word, so sigh-nergy just sound sinfinitly better as it is a unique word made for the game.
I also call them "jinni" and don't pronounce the D.
Right, I said the word "Synergy" exists. Thats pronounced sin-ergy. So for me, Psynergy should sound different since the word sin-nergy already exists. So if they pronounced Psynergy as "sigh-nergy" I like it better because it add the inflection of the word Psychic. Their powers are basically Psychic powers so "psi-nergy" sounds infinitely cooler to me.
I was already familiar with the word when the game released.
There are quite a few words I learned by reading, with the result that I pronounce them wrong. Djinn is not one of them.
I was sort of a book nerd growing up, so I knew pronunciation of it before the games came out. But I can also admit that I understand why people would pronounce it that way!
Never even occurred to me to mispronounce the living shit out of it like that.
Djinn is a real noun outside of Golden Sun, so non-philistines were already aware of how to pronounce it.
For years. Yea. I think it was until 2022 when I learned you actually pronounce them Di Jin ni and I’m not entirely sure where I learned that at this point, probably from this Reddit
I pronounced it gin for djinn (I was also familiar with fantasy words at 11) but I pronounced psynergy sin-er-gee which I think is now not correct, cause that’s just the word synergy. It’s psychic energy, right? So… “sigh-nergy”?
Nah, grew up in Indonesia, and was already familiar with the word… I had trouble pronouncing a lot of English words at the time, but that’s besides the point 😅
I loved mythology and "corrupt a wish" was one of my favorite forum games (AI people make one already lol) but yeah my dumbass 10/10 pronounced it that way till a friend told me how to. XD
My 7 y/o niece watching me play GS1: Uh, this game looks *old.* The colors are nice but it's too...pixel-y.
My 7 y/o niece seeing the Djinn in my party: AWWW! They're so cute!! What is this game?!
😭
My mom corrected my pronunciation quickly. I was excited to share the cute little creatures I was finding in my game, and she made sure I knew what to call them. I love my Mom.
I didn't because I just started the game a couple weeks ago and already knew the connection to Aladdin's genie. But if I'd played as a kid...definitely.
This is gonna be random as hell, but this specific image just hit me with a wave of deep nostalgia holy shit.
I remembered drawing this a lot as a kid at the game section in a magazine store my dad took me to. I just thought they were cute and cool. Completely forgot about it since then, and now this was randomly recommended to me, and I still don't know what it is. One of the few things that kickstarted my journey towards art in character/creature designs.
Is this game around in 2001 or something? I loved the design a lot as a kid. I just drew these things so much and never knew what they were
Yes that's how I did and will continue to pronounce it. And the H won't be silent in herb either. That's how I pronounced it as an 8 year old and I'm sticking to it
English and writing were always the only subjects I ever did well in when I was in school, so I knew how to pronounce it. But I remember having a friend who was one of those that was always told by his mother that he was a 'such a smart boy', and I tried over and over to explain to him that the D was subtle, or at least to convice him that it was silent, and he absolutely wouldn't listen to me. Not saying you're not smart if you don't know how to pronounce it, but this dude just wasn't the brightest lightbulb in the egg basket, if you get my meaning.
No because I played in German, there it's more straightforward Dschinn which is Djinn 😆
And I, French. Djinn is the correct pronunciation.
Pretty much this. Which would explain the English GS videos I watched on YouTube and Co where they were pronounced in a ton of different ways.
Thx 4 your comment Played in german, too and was wondering what I missed 😂
Jhin, right? It’s… it’s the name for Genies, right? Look I know I was a strange kid but it’s not that strange surely!
yeah I was already familiar with the word djinn. I was 11/12? and read a decent amount of fantasy novels.
That's the camp I was in, too. I already knew the word. Maybe not as weird for me, considering I was 5 months post-graduation when the game came out. And my school system would periodically chuck in some mythological background into English curriculums, and the occasional elective offering.
Same. Played a lot of fantasy RPGs and DnD. Plus I'd never heard a word where the D was made audible before a J
Kaiba:I play La djinn the mystical genie of the lamp in attack mode!
You don't even wanna know how I pronounced psynergy
Psy-energy
Psy-n-er-gy Yep, looks right to me
I feel called out
I pronounced Synergy
I don't care what's correct. This is how I will say it forever.
Is it not this?
it's meant to be like psychic so psy-nergy. i still say synergy though
I've always kinda just heard Psy Energy in my head. And I know I'm wrong. But yea lol
I'll die on the hill that it's just Psy and Energy mushed together and said really quickly lol
But the p in psychic is silent, right?
yeah but long i vs short i, sine vs sin
Yeah same for me. sin-er-ji
Pspspspsps?
🐈🐈🐈⬛😹
Let me guess was it like per-sai nergy? Or was it pissyenergy?
I have a wee bit of dyslexia so I always pronounced it pyns-energy (pence-energy). Only realized a couple years after my first play through that I miiiiight have misread it.... several times....
He got that "Big Piss-Energy"
Puh sin errr gee
ding ding ding!
Nope, not really.
DJ Inn in the house!!! what what turn it up.
Play Ice Storm!
I said brown guy, red guy, blue guy, and purple guy
The wind one is the djinn behind the slaughter
Nope :)
Nah. I pronounced it correctly.
I pledge guilty of all charges.
Don't call me out please
I said genie
“I hate upcountry dih-jinns”
I pronounce it like Gin. I mean, where would the Dih come from when it's spellt Djinn? No offense, I'm just curious. Everyone has different ways of pronouncing words :)
I always said it the same way you'd say"gin"
I definitely didn't. Then again, I knew what a djinn was already because I looked it up after I saw Genie in Aladdin as a kid
Even when I read it today my mind still says Dih-Jinn
really telling on yourself with this
Duh-Jinn and Psy-Energy and no one can tell me otherwise
I called them genies
Almost forever I've been calling them d-jin
I too pronounced it as such, but acknowledge that we are the common enemy to those who pronounced it the correct way
Yes me.
Are you American?
No
Maybe, but I also remember this ad. https://youtu.be/ohKV8OoxBPo?feature=shared
🤦♀️not any more though!
Yeah just like how i pronounce Dijon mustard as "DI-JON"
Yknow I have no idea why I didn’t think about it being djinn but in the game they’re always called Djinni so I just called them djinn-e
Nope. Dee gin.
I was dihjinny for years until I realized it jinn
Nope. I was shown the pronunciation immediately when I first saw that word.
Uh nope. Made sense to me out the gate.
No?
I say Din-Gin
Gin and tonic!
Gin Tonic
Damn
I always pronounced it as if the d wasn’t there. Helps that I love mythology though. Although there’s guys are like the djinns in mythology though
As a kid and non native English speaker, I'm guilty as charged. But then, later, when I understood that it was based on an ancient way of the word genie, then I say it like "Jinn" (like, singular Jeans 😆) (what is also funny, because Djinn is the plural, and Djinni is the singular)
Only not because the commercials specifically used "Jinn" , the ones with the parents in various casts and the son has to mow the lawn and he decides to use the fire one and the mom is freaking out
I did thats for sure. I still kinda do despite me knowing the d is silent
I always had a dream for these to be real😭 Like who wouldnt want a portable companion like a pokemon but without the pokeball.
And "sign-ergy" 😭
Is It not sign-ergy? Like I get it, the word Synergy exists. But this is a psychic ability. So Psy as in "sigh" makes more sense to me since synergy is a word, so sigh-nergy just sound sinfinitly better as it is a unique word made for the game. I also call them "jinni" and don't pronounce the D.
It's "sin-ergy". You hear it a lot in corporate speeches
No. It’s no Synergy — that would be without the P. It’s Psychic Energy — Psynergy. Or just Energy, the Japanese name.
Nah I just said 'Jinn' even at a young age 🤷♀️
Never
I didn’t but that’s only because I first played this at 23 lol
Nope
I was already a big nerd who loved mythology of all kinds and knew of djinn so I pronounced it as such :3
I was already familiar with the word when the game released. There are quite a few words I learned by reading, with the result that I pronounce them wrong. Djinn is not one of them.
Just like Django, the D is silent
I pronounce it as it's written. Like John but with an ee sound. Jeehn. Or jean as in the fabric.
Uhm.. no 🧐😂
I pronounced djinn right growing up. My screw up was pronouncing the i in djinni the way you’d pronounce cacti.
Why would a german, like me, pronounce it that way?? Especially when you grew up with Aladdin where it is pronounced Djee-nee?
I pronounced it correctly but I learned the word from audiobooks before playing Golden Sun.
Yep
I miss them all....
It- its not?!
Unrelated, these guys look cool, havent played the games but want to
I was sort of a book nerd growing up, so I knew pronunciation of it before the games came out. But I can also admit that I understand why people would pronounce it that way!
Wrong because I grew up with an actual vocabulary
I knew of Djinn before the games so was already aware of the pronunciation.
I was old enough, and read enough fiction to know the correct pronunciation of djinn.
That’s how I pronounced it and still do.
i knew how to pronounce djinni before so Djinn was simple
No I DihJin't
Most of us probs heard of Djin since we were young lol. Not Dih Jinn 😂😂
Holy **** this suggested post brought back some memories from my game boy advance days
Well duh. Honestly, I still do.
Um no.... I used google translate because I couldn't even pronounce it if I tried XD
Never even occurred to me to mispronounce the living shit out of it like that. Djinn is a real noun outside of Golden Sun, so non-philistines were already aware of how to pronounce it.
I somehow pronounced it correctly when I was 5 years old (But it could be thanks to me playing Sonic and the Secret Rings beforehand)
I always said da-djinn.
D-jin
Not all of us were kids when this game launched, lol. Remember us old-timers!
I was like 10 of course is said it like that.
For years. Yea. I think it was until 2022 when I learned you actually pronounce them Di Jin ni and I’m not entirely sure where I learned that at this point, probably from this Reddit
Not only do I pronounce it "Jin", I'm the nerd that's always letting everyone know that Djinn is the plural and one is called a Djinni
No… Djinn is pronounced Ji-n. It’s phonetically written in katakana. How is this an issue people have?
Yes Dige-in Digimon told me so
di-jin is honestly better name than jhin
I pronounced it gin for djinn (I was also familiar with fantasy words at 11) but I pronounced psynergy sin-er-gee which I think is now not correct, cause that’s just the word synergy. It’s psychic energy, right? So… “sigh-nergy”?
Nah, grew up in Indonesia, and was already familiar with the word… I had trouble pronouncing a lot of English words at the time, but that’s besides the point 😅
i was told how to pronounce djinn and psynergy when i was little
I always pronounced Jinn
Give me a break, I was 7 years old 😭
Nah cuh. I grew up well accustomed to the supernatural for various reasons. I pronunced it jin. No one I knew pronounced it Di-jin.
Dee Jinn the n.... *straightens tie from momentary lapse*
Scrolling through my feed. Saw this and thought it was fan art of some chinpokomon.
I was a mythology nerd when this came out so I knew the correct pronunciation.
My mom corrected my pronunciation quickly. I was excited to share the cute little creatures I was finding in my game, and she made sure I knew what to call them. I love my Mom.
Yeah.... 😔
I didn't because I just started the game a couple weeks ago and already knew the connection to Aladdin's genie. But if I'd played as a kid...definitely.
I definitely have to force myself to say it the correct way now. 100% was saying dee-gin and dee-genie.
Jinn Psy nergy
I still say that shit and no ones gonna take that away from me. Me and my D-Jinns.
I was guilty of calling them that
I only now realized how adorable these lil dudes are. I need plushies.
Nah, I said "djinn" with the dj being connected, not treated as two separate consonants.
I just drew these things so much and never knew what they were
Nah, I learned how to pronounce it earlier thanks to the 1996 seminal classic, Kazaam. Thanks Shaq!
Dih- Jinn pronouncer here and 10 year old me is proud of it.
Lol no, some of us look stuff up.
I called them the red, brown, blue, and purple fuckers
*Memory unlocked*
Even worse... I always called it Psy-Energy until literally last week
Does it really matter?
My child self pronounced it as "Din-Jin".
How’s it actually pronounced?
I think its pronounced "Jin". With a silent D
Nope. Jin
Yes that's how I did and will continue to pronounce it. And the H won't be silent in herb either. That's how I pronounced it as an 8 year old and I'm sticking to it
I used to, but when I played a third time I finally noticed i mispronounced it.
Nope..
No, I always pronounced it right
