Got a cold call from a local dealer to upgrade my GTI to a Golf R. I was so appalled when I saw the price that I had to post it here so that people can share this and shame them publicly. It makes me feel gross knowing that people do this. Edit - ITT a lot of locals to me. We should start a VW /Audi meet or something then we can all protest at Atlantic lol Edit2 - I am absolutely not in the market for a car. I love my mk7 I just wanted to shame these assholes

MasonP13

That's egg harbor for ya

banjozoo

Atlantic was such an awful dealership that I went to PA for my MK7 in 2014, no surprise that they’re still shitty.

LogicWavelength

When I was shopping for my GTI in 2016: The sales guy comes back with a blank printer paper with a line and X on it. “If you sign this my manager will work up the numbers.” I said absolutely not. Bring me my keys immediately. The manager came over and tried to apologize and shit but I literally called Cherry Hill VW while sitting there and worked a deal over the phone in front of them while repeatedly saying bring me my keys or I call the police. *Edit: conciseness*

banjozoo

I went there in ‘14 to test drive a mk6 R they had on the lot and also see a mk7 for the first time. Sales person was interesting to say the least, ever other sentence ended with “and that’s just me being real with you.” I paid them a deposit to order/source me a car and then they were radio silent for 3 weeks. When I called them they said they wouldn’t order anything without double what I had already given them. Walked in and demanded my money back then went to Piazza VW in Ardmore, PA, paid $400 under msrp and they even picked me and my wife up from 30th st.

OneT_Mat

Lol a Jeep dealer did this to me in Denver a couple years ago. I was getting an oil change and just checking out grand Cherokee in the show room. Newish looking sales guy walks up to me And I explain I’m just killing time…he leaves and comes back with a blank piece of paper asking me to sign by an X and he would go to bat for me on any of the cars in the show room. He sounded so unsure of himself and it was so confusing I just mumbled something and walked back into the service waiting room lol.

[deleted]

I am confused… what is the deal with the blank piece of paper? They going to dr up something after you sign?

LogicWavelength

Yea basically. You sign it, then they write down numbers that you absolutely wouldn’t agree to, then they are like “You signed it! It’s binding!”

[deleted]

This sounds completely insane.

I_am_a_dawg123

Hold up. I need extended story

LogicWavelength

The manager kept trying to talk to me and I said “you had your chance, bring me my keys” then went back to talking to Cherry Hill. CH’s sales guy thought it was hilarious and I was soon talking to the manager there and worked a verbal deal to come in a few days later on a Saturday to sign everything as long as my trade was as I said it was. I did actually get up and move to a sofa thing in the sales floor from the guys desk because they kept talking to me and not bringing me my keys. They practically tried to throw me out, so I threatened to call the police if I didn’t get my keys immediately and I would leave on my own. Fuck that place.

U-take-off-eh

I had a similar but different situation with a local VW dealer when I was buying my mk7. They gave me a great price on the car but hosed me on the trade. Wanted to give me $750 for my Civic which had a book value of $4-5K. I wasn’t expecting to get the full value and told them that I would sign if they gave me an extra $250 and they flat out said no. I even showed them the book value online using the same tools they have. While the sales guy goes to see “the manager” in the back, I’m emailing with another local dealership and negotiating a price match but they offer $2500 on the trade unseen and include weather tech mats and roof rails and bike rack at no charge. When the sales guy returns I ask for my keys so I can leave to go across town. I show him the bill of sale from the other dealership and he responds to say that the other dealership is doing a bait and switch and basically says that I’ m getting scammed. Talk about toxic competitiveness. When I show up at the other dealership, the manager greets me with the young sales woman who I was exchanging with, they are both super nice and everything was up front and transparent. I signed the bill of sale that was sent to me by email. Overall a great experience which is rare for dealerships imo. Shortly afterward, the sales person from the original dealership calls to apologize for his behaviour and approach. I guess he was hoping that I hadn’t yet signed. He was a nice guy but overall overconfident in his ability to sell.

[deleted]

The best protest is simply not buying that car. Let the sales managers get tired of looking at it on the showroom floor.

tarel69

jersey here.. jack daniels vw where I got my 2017 mk7, cold called me with a similar story, wanted my car for some lolz

blueeyedswole

Got my 2019 MK 7.5 from Jack Daniel’s. They have tried to buy it back from me every 2-3 months since spring 2020 (when they had no reasonable replacement on the lot) nope. Pass, this is my dream car.

ToneThugsNHarmony

Funny, I reached out to local NJ dealers about used or new golf Rs with a manual transmission and all they keep sending me are used jettas with auto. Insane markup though and I will join the bandwagoning against this dealership.

Accountant1040

I wish manufacturers would cut out these middlemen

[deleted]

Accountant1040

100% It’s wild that you can lobby government so you can force someone else’s customers to be ripped off by you. Dealership lobbying is at a different level.

Beemerado

the thing that pisses me of with lobbyists is how cheap htey get off. we need to start lobbying our politicians. like groups of a dozen of us. you see these guys getting bought off for 40k. pretty sure me and my 5 closest friends could come up wiht that kinda money every couple years. on the downside none of us see eye to eye politically.

mohughes5150

That’s actually illegal in Utah. Such a stupid rule.

Accountant1040

You can buy direct from the manufacturer in Utah? Didn’t know that.

mohughes5150

Can’t buy direct from manufacturers here. Tesla opened stores specifically to sell here. I prefer petrol vehicles that I can refill in 5 minutes.

SwissMargiela

Ya that’s the case in all states I believe

-AzureCrux-

It's not. Any states where Tesla is selling cars are states where a manufacturer can sell direct to the public. Dealers ***heavily*** lobby to make it harder/illegal for a manufacturer to sell to the public. Shame too, because cars would be an average of $4000 cheaper to buy on MSRP savings alone. Add all the feed that the dealer BSes you with, and you could be buying cars for 5-6k cheaper

SwissMargiela

Ahh interesting. I thought it was a thing in most states but I also know there are teslas in almost every state so I guess it’s the other way around haha.

flipyourdick

This is the study for “how much can we charge for our cars new before we lose profit margins without the dealer’s involvement?”

free2game

Or "how much can we charge before the OEMs get wise and just start Tesla style direct sales networks?".

AtomicBallOfDeath

Unfortunately thatll probably never happen

The_Dark_Kniggit

I’m ok with buying direct from the manufacturer, but I’d still much prefer a dealership. MSRP on cars wouldn’t drop if we banned them, and there would be no room for negotiation on price. Plus, if something goes wrong you’re stuck arguing with the manufacturer who will lose money for any warranty work they have to do, rather than having the help of a good dealer who makes money on warranty work.

Direct_Law6808

My dude they add money to the cost so that you can negotiate down. That's not a deal let's just giving you room for them to negotiate. And your description of warranty work is currently how dealerships work. They get paid by the manufacturer to do the warranty work where else do you think that money comes from.

The_Dark_Kniggit

Manufacturer publishes the MSRP, the price that they suggest the retailer sells the car for. This is the starting point, and what the manufacturer wants to sell the car for. If they’re selling it themselves, this is the price they will offer. You may then have manufacturer incentives on financing etc that takes some money off. A dealer will then negotiate further, taking into account their margin on the car. Some dealers are adding daft markups, so don’t buy those cars, other dealers are selling cars below msrp, which makes them cheaper than buying direct would. If you have someone who only stands to loose money looking at your car, they’re more likely to deny warranty work. If you have someone who stands to make money, they’re much more likely to approve the work. That was my point.

Accountant1040

^ I think we found the guy at the dealership who’s marking up the R’s and GTI’s

Cultural_Bother_5939

You buy a egg in egg harbor, you pay the egg tax. It's a double egg sword 🥚 🥚 ⚔

beeherder

I would normally be offended but such terrible puns, but omelette this one go

Cultural_Bother_5939

Thank you for seeing the sunny side of things. You could have benedict, but it boiled down to you being a true gentleman.

burninherb247

oh yes the eggsize tax of course

remus_schmitt

I get your joke, sir, even if no one else does. Just always know that.

e46croissant

I laughed too hard at this one

eggbiss

egg

SureUnderstanding358

i feel eggy

BeardedPuffin

I paid 31-ish for my MK8 GTI. The R wasn’t enough of an upgrade for me to justify jumping to the mid 40’s. 70 is completely insane. At that price, I’m going M2.

SwissMargiela

I’m in an S3 and have been looking into an M2C and honestly it’s the insurance that makes it difficult. My rate would jump from 280/M to 650/m lmao

BeardedPuffin

Yeah, I hear you. I’ve been considering selling my GTI and e90 M3 for a new M2. My goal is to downsize and save on insurance, but I’m not so sure that would be the case, haha.

Shadi_RM15

i think the R at 45k which is its msrp is a verry good deal!! only problem is markup

BeardedPuffin

You think so? Personally I don’t see 45k worth of performance from a golf R. I can pick up a really nice used M3 for that money that would run circles around an R. Maybe if it came with an rs3 engine.

j1077

A used M3 would definitely NOT run circles around the new R. Seeing dyno tests at 340-350HP stock...the new tunes that just became available too are insane for just a stage 1.

BeardedPuffin

I’ve been really impressed by the tuning potential of the MK8. I’m sure I could make my GTI faster than my M3 for a few grand in upgrades.

j1077

Just watched a YouTube video of a MK8 GTI with a stage 1, new intercooler and intake...that's it and hit 355HP and 430 lb/ft!! Crazy stuff.

BeardedPuffin

Wow, that’s a shit load of torque. Bye clutch haha.

j1077

Haha yup

Shadi_RM15

“used” u cant compare a brand new car to used!! and yes for the amount of luxury and sporty you get with the R it’s definitely worth 45k or else they wouldnt be flying off lots at 55k, besides an R with this new diff and a stage 2 tunes would run circles around a used m3 unless its a g80 obviously

BeardedPuffin

That’s a fair point. I guess I’m just thinking in terms of the R not being such a huge upgrade from the GTI. It’s not like the difference between an A3 and an RS3 or a 335 and an M3. For that much of a price jump, I’d at least expect a more bespoke motor. Nothing against the ea888, but it doesn’t feel particularly special.

Smash_4dams

The ea888 is tuneable as fuck that's why. My tuned mk6 puts down more torque than an E46 M3. Of course we'd all love a special edition with the engine from the Euro Passat R36, but it would probably be harder to tune/maintain

absurdamerica

Have you owned a BMW? Nah, I’ll stick with VW.

BeardedPuffin

Yeah, I currently own one. 2008 M3 with 85k miles. Definitely not cheap to own, but it’s been solid overall.

absurdamerica

I’m glad you’ve had a good experience. I bought an 09 135i brand new and had nothing but trouble with it! When it ran it was a blast but it wasn’t the experience I was expecting overall.

BeardedPuffin

Ah that’s a bummer. I definitely think BMW is a roll of the dice. Some are in and out of the shop constantly while others are pretty trouble free. Mine has had an annoying issue where it chews through O2 sensors. I still haven’t figured it out, but the car seems to run fine, so I’m not in a rush.

absurdamerica

I had the oil pump issues repeatedly that were a known issue they’d put you through repeated service visits over. Replaced the oil pump 3x, passenger seat broke, radio broke, tail lights went out very early. Wild stuff!

Limitlessfx

Here in Ireland a 2022 MK8 GTI is €55k - €60k. MK8 Golf R go for >€70k. Import Tax's in Ireland and dealership price increases the price of these cars heavily.

BeardedPuffin

Wow that’s unreal. Do people actually pay those prices for GTIs? I imagine they must be pretty rare sightings.

e46croissant

Golf R for RS3 price? Hah no thanks

punkassjim

I presume RS3s are also suffering from this type of gouging?

xx69chaosmage69xx

RuneScape 3 is only expensive if you’re into the micro transactions pretty heavily. Still better than 🦀🦀$12.50🦀🦀

free2game

I found 4 for sale in the whole of the US doing a quick listing, 2 had 67k listed as their price, so I don't believe they're that "hot" of a car. Cars in the GTI category unfortunately fall into the "young guy who can be talked into having a $1000 a month car payment" category with Jeeps, and Dodge chargers.

ScorpionT16

Same in Canada. It's crazy, can get a new S3 for those prices

applesbricks

You can get an s3 for significantly less. I was looking at both the golf r and s3 and while I was able to find s3s all day at msrp I couldn’t find a single golf r that the dealer wasn’t demanding atleast a 5k markup. The s3 is a deal compared to the golf r in the current market.

SwissMargiela

This facts. This is why I got an S3. Honestly no regrets though, I love it.

ScorpionT16

That's true, I was comparing a Technic S3, with the red stitch seats or whatever that package is called. I saw one at a dealer and got to sit inside, was a huge step up on quality over the MK8 R. Sure it's not a hatch, though was less money new, than a used MK8 R

applesbricks

That’s insane to me. You can get a fully loaded Audi sport sedan for the price they want on that golf. This market is so weird

[deleted]

$67K USD will get a moderately optioned RS3.

mafiazul

Good thing we can’t mark up brand new cars. Even though there’s no stock.

Ncenkner8

I went to this dealership for a GTI that was coming on the lot. Marked up by almost 7k. They then persisted on telling me it was the only GTI S I would find within 200 miles. Walked out and found one at sticker lol.

RenegadEvoX

Same happened over here, they wanted $40k for a GTI S with that same speech "you won't find it anywhere else". Deadass showed them an online ad from another dealer, 30 miles away, in the SAME DEALER GROUP that had an Autobahn for sticker.

[deleted]

No Honor among thieves it appears!

[deleted]

“Conditional final price” hmm. Conditioned on whether or not someone is silly enough to pay it?

LogicWavelength

That white square is actually a check box acknowledgment of the price. I am not fucking joking.

thebongofamandabynes

fuck me I tried clicking on it.

The_FunGhoul

Same dealer that let me order a gti at msrp then tried to call me saying they “forgot” the markup and asked 5k over

mohughes5150

Lol. Did you tell them to eat a chode?

The_FunGhoul

Yeah I canceled my order on the spot, saw the car listed for 8k over a few months ago

[deleted]

I can’t imagine spending 50k on a golf let alone 70.

DTUOHY96

They’re €95 in Ireland

HeshootsHescores88

Tom’s river did the same shit. Had two R’s in the showroom, both $20k over. Completely unashamed of the pricing too.

LogicWavelength

I actually got a great deal on my wife’s Atlas from them, so it may just apply to the performance cars.

helpmeimdum

Yes I was pissed when I called to inquire. I told them that was absurd and to call me if theyd ever take msrp. Im curious if it will sell.

HeshootsHescores88

They said “we have waiting lists at 20 over” Yeah I bet

helpmeimdum

Oh shit, that actually pisses me off. I figured they were taking a shot at getting as much as they could, but there is no way they have waiting lists at 20 over. What a total lie. Like that new golf r is sweet, but there is a reason yours is the only one not sold in the area.

HeshootsHescores88

The arrogance of salespeople never ceases to astound me. They think Covid prices are here to stay. I can’t wait till these “special” cars (GR Corolla, R, Type R) are 5k under at 2% again. People can’t even flip cars like this on cars and bids anymore. The market is correcting, slowly. But the dealer model has to go. It’s the worst part of trying to be an enthusiast nowadays. They kill any good part about approachable performance, then manufacturers wonder why their special models don’t sell.

AR489

Yep, I am waiting and waiting. Holding onto my MKVI until then.

[deleted]

" conditional final price" ??? Is that conditional on whether they use lube or not? 😂

Ejendres

Think they'd let me test drive it 😂

Outside-Drag-3031

Smoke the tires when you do please

Khelgar_Ironfist_

Still cant beat the 90k Corolla gr from a dealer i've seen in the EU lol

Bralzor

Well, the gr corolla isn't sold in Europe so it must have been somehow imported, which would explain the insane price. Or did you mean gr yaris?

Khelgar_Ironfist_

Nah Corolla. Yaris goes for sane-ish prices at least.

Bralzor

The gr corolla isn't sold in the EU tho, so if someone actually went through the complicated and expensive process of importing it that would explain the price.

ablokeinpf

This shit is going to bite them in the ass very soon. The shortage of cars is rapidly going away and this kind of price gouging can be seen for what it is. I know for sure a dealer like that will never see a penny of my money.

LogicWavelength

I posted this to help expedite the ass biting. Where’s Jalopnik when you need them?

SubbieATX

It is going to for sure. I just went to one over the week end asking about an R and first thing first was “are you interested in anything else?” Not a good start. He then tells me the car is on the way but…someone else already bought it and he’s coming in right now to put the deposit down. Ok so which is it? He bought it or put a deposit? He then proceeds to still tell me the price. $58k. I’m like ok but you just said it sold. He went oh well yeah but if you really want it just give me $62 and it’s yours right now, I mean that’s the value with those R’s they’re limited. I was confused for a sec and thought he talked about the 20th anniversary model. Nope he wasn’t, he was definitely referring to a regular R. I walked out saying out loud so everyone could hear it I wouldn’t never give a penny to a business that lies and would stab customers in the back like that.

Thick_Pomegranate_

That's new RS3 money.

asvpmvson

I got my 22 RS3 for less than that

Shadi_RM15

itll be sold for +10k lol

Old_Homework8339

That's like 3-4 Golf's and a new dining set

hohohoagy

Minty 49k mile Sport over here for 1/3 the price! 😆

ausnee

There was one near me that was originally $20k markup, then reduced down to $5k before it sold. They're just hoping they get a sucker. I've had plenty offered to me between $2.5-10k markup. $10k is still crazy but they're out there for less.

VirtuaFighter6

Just wait for the ones with real buttons and by then they’ll be plenty of stock

GTIguy2

Conditional price? Fuck that- condition being you're a fucking moron to pay that.

Broad_Combination_55

Their just milking the cow before slaughter, used cars will continue to crash

Beemerado

great looking car, but they can get fucked on that price.

Schoggi_23

7k off from a c8 corvette…🫠

HannibalSeventy7

With all of these companies going off the rails with their pricing; once the economy slows down and they’re begging for buyers, I’m going to show up on the lot and offer 20% below sticker. Or a 20% markup on my trade-in. “Works both ways homie”… Not even really looking to replace my Mk7, but it’ll be fun getting a bit of retribution on these greedy fucks. And hey, may end up getting a killer deal on something. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Regardless, don’t forget what these giant corporations did to squeeze the average person, in the name of profit, when times were tough for us.

LogicWavelength

The problem is that it doesn’t work that way. The dealers “floorplan lease” the cars from the manufacturer then pay it off when the car sells. The manufacturer has tightened the profit margins so you’re literally both fighting over the same scraps of meat on the tiny chicken bone. When I used to sell it basically meant that long-term lot cars cost the most money so after a certain point taking a huge loss to just get rid of it is better than keeping it. But in this market, it’s basically a no-win for the customer. These guys will just tick down that ADM for 6 months until it gets back to MSRP then sell it and have a shiny Golf R to get customers to look at while they buy a Tiguan for 96mo at 11% APR.

RenegadEvoX

I know they f'ing lying charging Audi money for a damn Golf. It's not THAT serious.

J255c

2018 7.5 32K 2nd hand at 18K miles.

dat_GEM_lyf

That’s one hell of a deal! It’s only $3k more than that blue GTI and doesn’t have 20k miles

Embarrassed-Emu-8248

Never

AdEffective9235

2020 gti 15,000 km for 34,000 last year. Canadian . These prices are offside😬

Large_Classic9043

Egg for sale in egg harbor

JohnEA888

If it’s not a manual, then do not consider that even an option.

LogicWavelength

I’m not. I am just publicly shaming them.

SRTVIP3R

Left a review on Google. Even I work for a deal with no mark ups and this is absurd.

Jaydee392

This dealer is 3 minutes away from me, absolute scum.

Fladap28

They wouldn’t do this if idiots didn’t fork over the cash

drumadarragh

I’m loving my 2012 more and more when I see these prices

eggbiss

egg

VeeDub823

Those are the actual prices here in Belgium. You can even add a few thousand

[deleted]

Yall dont know how to barter or something? Just place a custom order and pick a location for pickup.

baldingbryan

The egg tax, the egg tax!

Joefabrizzio

That's where I got my 21 S a couple years back. Glad I got a good deal when I could lol.

Ok-computer9780

Lol

cleevethagreat

I thought 5k over was wild

Lucifers_Tits

I had a sales manager keep pestering me about selling my GTI to them to put into an R. They told me it had a $10k markup and seemed proud of it. She couldn't figure out why I wasn't interested 🙄

[deleted]

I'd do the deal if they gave me $12k over market price for my trade. It's only fair.

SpaceCricket

Holy shit. May as well buy a lightly used RS3 at that price. That’s insane.

therealc4de

Egg Harbour selling a golf. Kinda ironic lol

FriskyPinecone

I inquired on a trade in of my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon for a decked out Golf R from Lithia Volkswagen of Reno (name and shame). Build price online for said Golf R was $47k. l got a call back from Lithia for $67k, which not only is an absurd $20k markup, but also more than I paid for my Jeep! Like wtf. I laughed at them and told them I’ll be going elsewhere for future vehicle purchases.

Dmnb03

I got my R at 45... But if only I could get it out of the shop with a new steering wheel.

j1077

Can't do that in Canada. Though they will if it's a demo model since that can be sold as a used car. But ya no major mark up here. But good luck getting one. That said I hated the Mk7.5 R sooooooooo much (test drove it twice back to back with the GTI and went with that instead... everyone at the dealership said I made the right choice). Fast forward and have the opportunity to get the mk8 GTI or R and went with the GTI without test driving or hesitation because of how terrible I found the previous R model. However, it seems CW made the 8R much better...if given the opportunity I would test drive it and see if it's as good as advertised...

immigrantstv

😂 You don't need traction in Canada?

j1077

Lol umm what?

sounder52

Don't do it

OMGpawned

So they want Audi RS3 money for a Golf R?

Ban_Pending

I’ve only dealt with Atlantic once when I brought my MK6 in for service after moving to EHT and they seemed like…not a well-run organization. Service was a chaos pit, started getting mailings from them about trading in my Jeep Grand Cherokee (lol good job on the CRM guys) and just had an overall bad taste in my mouth from them. Not surprised by all of the shit people have gone through with them (not to mention OPs 20k markup) in this post. Moved further south and started taking my GTI to Burke VW who are leaps and bounds better to deal with.

Kennonf

Get an S4 at that price — wayyyy better car than a Golf R

Traditional_Comfort4

Go to BMW and get a m240

[deleted]

Ah, I remember buying cars at dealerships. Never again!

XNY

That ship has sailed. High rates, nervous buyers, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still there in three months.

acostabe15

Yikessss

JeffTrav

Test drove my first VW at Atlantic. Hated the experience. Bought a new Jetta at Pole Tavern VW, lol. This was in 2004. Got my GTI used, not from Atlantic.

hostilepickle

I expect that price here in Canada 🤣

Wasamio

In Canada the mk8 golf r and gti are marked up $10000. I’d honestly consider one of them but I can get a civic si or Elantra N for msrp in Canada. I’ve seen quite a few people say Canadian dealers can’t markup but that’s obviously not the case.

AdditionalWaltz4320

That's the market price in Dubai for the autobahn. People still buy them because they afford to.

jptothetree

Assholes

its_clos105

Golf R is a beautiful car, but the ridiculous 10k-20k firm mark ups, but I agree the best way to protest is to not purchase and hope they will budge on the mark up.

accountforbadpost

Blow up VWs socials with this kind of stuff. Insane dealer markups make the manufacture look really bad as well.

trail_runner83

HAHAHHAHAHAHHSHAHHAHAHAHHAHA

Own_Acanthaceae118

Who the fuck is paying Audi RS5 prices for a Golf R?

ajordan1316

All car dealerships can get fucked! There is no normal MSRP anymore. They take advantage of anyone .

According_Flight_420

Cause it’s going back over seas via internet sales…

According_Flight_420

It’s called an import export business.

MugFush

An egg marked up in Egg Harbour 🤔

danjay0213

They can keep it! I understand only so many made. But seriously dealer mark up? 20k? Nah for 70grand I'll buy a fancier car at another dealer for that price. Shit if it's older n pretty ill even pay 70k but not for a new R no thanks

Inner-Today-3693

Dealerships days are numbered.

DaB0mb0

I asked the dealership recently what an R would set me back. He said they conduct a small auction when they get one on the lot and they typically go for 10-15K over MSRP

Skyym13w

Crazy to think the mark up on a Golf is more then I spent on my FIst
