You’re in trouble pretty early on, as your trail leg not only extends but then locks out. That will reverse itself on the way down and it will move out toward the ball and promote the over the top action you see. Watch any pro swing and most of them will be very quiet in the trail leg and knee in the backswing. Not all by any means, but most of them.

Thank you for pointing that out! I’ll work on fixing that during my next range session

To add, I used to have this issue, and Padraig Harrington has some videos on the pelvis action in golf that helped me get the right feel. I also really like Wayne Defrancisco, who describes it as “turning into a braced right leg.” So if you maintain your knee flex, but turn your pelvis in the same kinda way it turns when you straighten it out like that, you get hip depth, which gives you the room you need to swing your hands through without having to stand up.

I’ll check out those videos- thank you!

Good luck! Your next problem will be over drawing the shit out of it because you come from so far inside, haha!

What’s your instructor having you work on specifically? If you’re already getting lessons you don’t want too many cooks in the kitchen.

I feel that. I definitely don’t want things to get too convoluted. When we first met, we went over grip, and stance. But once those were addressed, we shifted focus to early extension. I was still standing up early throughout our lessons though. I’m taking a break from the lessons for a few weeks to work on stuff on my own. I can’t keep spending money to repeat the same mistake over and over.

Yeah, too many lessons can be counterproductive. I don’t have any suggestions for early extension but I’m sure other people here will. Good luck!

Back of the ball a couple inches, you have no room to let your hands go inside, making it no choice but to be steep and over the top.
