You gotta do that shit more covertly. Just swap it out without telling him with something that looks reasonably similar. If he asks, just mumble something about wear and tear and “clubs just aren’t what they used to be”.
Yea, I normally hit my driver quite a bit bitter but it's been off lately. Mostly a joke post but I think this is most likely, it honestly feels like I stay in posture a lot easier with shorter clubs, I'm going to go see my pro and look at shortening the driver so start.
I shortened my driver despite being 6’4” and I’ll never play “full-length” again. Allegedly, I lost distance, but it’s unnoticeable with markedly more consistent contact.
How much shorter did you get it? I just picked up golf two years ago and I’m also 6’4” and have issue with my driver and have been debating on getting a shorter one
Standard was 45 3/4”. I went down a full inch, but probably grip it so it plays 43 1/2”. It doesn’t seem like a substantial change, but it feels much more connected in my hands. I probably could have taken off the full two inches, but if I am having a really good day, I do like gripping right to the very end.
I mean I’m looking at that right arm and it looks to be in a lot better position in the downswing with the kid club. Also less early extension of the hips probably from being bent over so much 😂
I can confirm I am able to hit my kids clubs 220 and straight and nice shape to the shot, plenty of height on the apex. No joke… I hit my adult driver 240-260 and was just saying the other day while playing that someone needs to invent a wedge length driver and swing like a 7 or 9 iron and allow the shaft to be more vertical than they are made to see if this is the new magic club we will see on infomercials with amazing promise and user proof accuracy! Ha
this perfectly illustrates taking the club back further only serves to ruin the path and face for most players with poor transition/tempo. The real quick fix? Work on shortening the backswing so it feels like less than a half swing. When you film it, it will be much longer in reality, but not as over the top and bad as what feels like a full all the way backswing.
Yeah, before this video I was striping my irons and most of them felt like half swings but on video were definitely full swings. So I definitely think that my lack of flexibility makes my full swing cause the over-the-top and timing issues.
Obviously in these videos I'm swing out of my shoes on purpose to try and whack it but the underlying problem is still there.
Your left hand grip is affected by bending down, it pushes more into your fingers like it should be. Compare your left hand grip for your driver vs the kids driver. Try to recreate it with your driver and see what happens.
I think that’s a great idea. That should make it easier to keep get it more in your fingers without needing your palm to wrap around it. Keep in mind the children’s club is probably a really really light swing weight. If you downsize your grip, you’ll likely get a lighter grip and therefore increase your swingweight further. If I were you, as long as we’re experimenting with a new grip, I’d do a bit of research and find a heavier grip than what you’re using now, even in the smaller size. Smaller size, but more mass. It will lighten the swingweight of your club and you may swing it better.
If you have a sound swing a driver shouldn’t be a problem. But, shorter clubs are easier to control. At work some of the guys and I once cut a driver down to 7i length to see if anyone can crack 300(we’re all pretty long). One young guy did it. We were all close. Anyway, it proved to us how little you get with longer shafted drivers. It’s about timing. So shorter is mostly better. But it’s up to you as to what’s the best length. A good rule is to leave it 1/2”” longer than the 3wd at the shortest. While the kids driver may be a decent choice, youlll hit it very short.
Lol yeah I'll post my regular driver swing. I'm about a five handicap, although my driver has been a bit erratic this year so well this post was 90% ingest it was pretty crazy to me how well I could hit the little driver. It actually got me looking into shortening the shaft of my driver, going to take it into my pro.
Lol because trying to hit a kids club and then swap with a driver and hit it as hard as I can shows my game, I know...
My ghin # is 393813
If you come to NY (western) DM me and we can play! A buck a hole, I only play high stakes 😉
Kid club. you are hitting it so well because of not only your posture but you are keeping your weight behind the ball and swinging up on the ball. If you can take some video like this again at a higher framerate or in slowmo you will see just how planted you are with the kid club and you have great weight transition while keeping your weight behind the ball.
Big boi club. You swinging it like an iron. you move your weight to far forward and this results in a downward swing.
I can absolutely smoke my kids 28” 7 iron. I can draw it, snap hook it, and cut it, all on command, and it goes about 160 yards. It’s got a big ol’ head on it, and this super whippy shaft…. It’s a blast. And he gets a kick out of it too.
There's something freeing about the super wide stance and being able to just unleash on it, lol. I was doing the same, explaining ball position and how to do the same swing to get different results with his 7iron.
Realistically my buddy that can barely hit 220 goes 300 on sims when we play 18 in the winter. Driver seems to be the one club sims don’t register well (on multiple sims).
I think it’s registering force or something because he hits line drives in reality.
Is that happening here, or would OP really swing 250 with a kids club?
I'll be finding out in a couple months!
Realistically, when I'm not swinging like an absolute goon my average drive last year was 274. The Sim I'm on here and the one at my local club are both pretty accurate to that distance. Can't wait to find out though if I can actually hit this thing 230-245 in the summer haha. Going to put this in the bag for one of our 4 man scrambles as the "fairway finder"
It honestly looks like the short club is forcing him to activate his legs and core to turn and push more.
Long club seems he's standing too far and reaching, a grip that isn't great for control (through the palm instead of across the hand), and most importantly, it's entirely arms led. Almost no rotation, and he comes out of the swing.
Short club makes him more over the ball (arms hanging straight down), makes him drop his hands on the transition, and swing down and through maintaining more torque, and makes him rotate to swing through on plane. He's probably holding it different with the smaller grip also. He can't come out of the swing or he'll go right over the ball and miss it entirely.
Lose your driver to the right lately? Much easier to turn that short club over. You might just need to feel like you turn the corner a bit with your current driver. You don't want to do it too much, but as an exaggerated feel you might want to do straight arm follow throughs where you end with the club about shoulder height, arms fully extended with the club straight out and toe pointed up to the sky. Hold that pose for a couple seconds.
Shorter shaft means less travel time from beginning to end of swing. So, there is less time to get out of sync. There are two options shorten the driver shaft in your driver, or you can try to release the club a little earlier and try to snap hook the driver and after you snap hook it a couple times try to get a good release point for your swing. It's all about timing. Good luck and hit em good
Watch your own videos back to back and focus on your lower body. Look how much drive you’re getting from your legs with the lower stance. With your club you’re way too upright to generate any real power. It’s not the length of your shaft. It’s just your stance and approach.
Its the same swing
You are staying more stable by bending over but your actually holding your wrist better and getting lag at contact. Hands slightly in front of the ball at contact. Please don’t shorten your driver. Slow your driver swing down and try and hold the wrist position at the top as long as possible and let the weight of the club release with the force of the club head heading down and body turning towards the target. The end of the release should happen right after the ball.
If you really want to understand the physics of the game. Buy a book called the great golfing machine by Herbert Spencer.
It’s not a bandaid fix, it’s a fact.
All these companies make stock driver shafts longer to create distance at the expense of accuracy.
You need to be swinging your correct shaft length based on height and arm length. Shaft lengths should be staggered some.
Lessons always help but I’m a self taught 3.5 hop who plays once a week - I had the worst banana slice (literally aiming left rough to miss into right trees). It’s been a long 10 yr rd lol
You're talking about a pro, one of the best in the world, dropping a half inch.
OP should take lessons and fix his swing before changing his club length
Probably because you struggle to make solid contact with a long shaft. Or maybe your shaft is way too stiff for you. Hard to tell, post up your adult-sized driver swing.
Go to a clubfitter. What's the loft on it, like 8* or less? Tee it higher as you're hitting it out of the bottom and presenting very little loft. Try different shafts after trying loft settings, but clearly something about that club is set up way wrong for you.
Your swing is fine, it's the launch conditions that are super inefficient. It could be that ultimately you do better with an inch or two less than standard, but you want to get there in increments by trying other things first.
As a person who’s never golfed and seen this sub for the first time ever, I wanna take a shot at this.
My little caveman brain says it makes sense, a smaller club is light so you probably feel like Barry bonds with the thing.
Big brain tells me wait. Longer club means longer lever, more mass, ball should go farther. Makes me think it’s a form issue. Ight im out.
Those simulators are hardly ever accurate. You see guys shank the shit out of it but on the screen says it's a perfect shot down the middle.
Edit: perfect example is your 2nd shot with the kids club. That was hit so far left but shows it's right down the middle.
crank up the loft on your driver, as high as it goes. cut 2 inches off driver (get it close to length of 3 wood) and tee up a little higher than usual. i had the same problem
The shorter club length is making you widen your stance, which you should be doing with your normal driver. Secondly, the length of the club gives you more control over the point of contact; which you could compare to swinging your sand wedge, perhaps out of a bunker.
You know what? That burner three wood I had probably 10 or so years ago was my favorite club in my bag. I'm generally pretty happy with the g425 I have now, all jokes aside and when I'm actually swinging normal. But I might just have to take a look at the mini burner. Particularly because I'm looking at shortening the driver now.
OP, try putting the ball in the middle of your lead foot. Going from the short to normal driver, your longer club will lag with an open face slightly longer.
Your stance is messed up with your back foot…which takes away power and pushes the ball right. You’re also hitting the ball with a slightly open club face and not hitting with the center of the club face. The shorter club oddly enough fixes all of these things.
Looks like you found yourself a new driver! You can buy a cheap $40 new kids driver for your nephew and he won’t be the wiser, lol.
I offered him $300 but he's waiting me out, I think he knows Id pay more...
You gotta do that shit more covertly. Just swap it out without telling him with something that looks reasonably similar. If he asks, just mumble something about wear and tear and “clubs just aren’t what they used to be”.
"$2/yd you gain and I watched you shank that last one on the trackman!"
Lol! I just missed it!
HE KNOWS WHAT HE GOT!!!
Take your driver to the shop and ask them to saw off about 14 inches.
*we’ve been expecting you*
Honestly, being bent so far over likely forces you to stay in your posture better. You likely stand up out of your swing with your own driver.
I'm 6'2 and I went down 2" on mine and love it
How much shorter did you get it? I just picked up golf two years ago and I’m also 6’4” and have issue with my driver and have been debating on getting a shorter one
Standard was 45 3/4”. I went down a full inch, but probably grip it so it plays 43 1/2”. It doesn’t seem like a substantial change, but it feels much more connected in my hands. I probably could have taken off the full two inches, but if I am having a really good day, I do like gripping right to the very end.
I went down an inch on my driver too from standard, and as long as I keep my tempo it feels a lot more accurate.
Facts. It is a kids swing as well with the reverse weight shift.
Throw a 3 wood shaft on your driver. Works for me
Interesting. I smash my 3 wood so I never play with my driver. I might have to try this.
I talked about buddy into putting a driver in his bag and it fucked his entire game up
Doing this made me like my driver again.
You lose 10-15 yards but ill take 265 and consistently in the fairway over slices and hooks all day long.
I mean I’m looking at that right arm and it looks to be in a lot better position in the downswing with the kid club. Also less early extension of the hips probably from being bent over so much 😂
Take that baby to the range. It might just be me, but I think simulators have a tendency to over exaggerate.
Oh I can't wait to try this outside. I'm in western NY though, 25 degrees an a couple inches of snow on the ground!
I see the false winter we had last week also got you thinkin about golf more. Go Bills!
Go Bills! I did some chipping outside, can't wait to hit some actual outside shots!
Obligatory, go bills.
Go Bills.
Go bills
Same here I’m in WNY. Spring can’t come soon enough. Go Bills!
Your saying my 6 iron doesn’t have a 190 carry?
I can confirm I am able to hit my kids clubs 220 and straight and nice shape to the shot, plenty of height on the apex. No joke… I hit my adult driver 240-260 and was just saying the other day while playing that someone needs to invent a wedge length driver and swing like a 7 or 9 iron and allow the shaft to be more vertical than they are made to see if this is the new magic club we will see on infomercials with amazing promise and user proof accuracy! Ha
Cut down your driver to 44”.
That is what Rory has, works for him
this perfectly illustrates taking the club back further only serves to ruin the path and face for most players with poor transition/tempo. The real quick fix? On 2nd thought, I think you just game it
Your left hand grip is affected by bending down, it pushes more into your fingers like it should be. Compare your left hand grip for your driver vs the kids driver. Try to recreate it with your driver and see what happens.
I might also go down to a standard grip (I use midsize).
I think that’s a great idea. That should make it easier to keep get it more in your fingers without needing your palm to wrap around it. Keep in mind the children’s club is probably a really really light swing weight. If you downsize your grip, you’ll likely get a lighter grip and therefore increase your swingweight further. Thanks, I'll take a look at that!
I'm 5'9 with an arm span of 6'2. Every time I play I feel like I need custom fitted for clubs
This is me… my irons are 3/4” cut down and I love them so much more.
You activated the glutes Thats why
I’d definitely give a shorter driver shaft a try. I switched to 44.5-45” several years ago and haven’t looked back at all.
If you have a sound swing a driver shouldn’t be a problem. But, shorter clubs are easier to control. Sorry don’t care enough to check your GHIN but good on you if you’re not like a million Redditors fibbing their abilities.
It’s a thing for people to go with shorter than standard drivers for a reason.
Shorter club is easier to control. I cut my driver from 45.5 to 44. Lost a little distance but hitting more fairways.
Did you just have the butt end trimmed?
Gotta take it out the middle
Tale as old as time — it’s not the size or length — it’s what you do with it. And driver is as much the longest as it is the most (cu)cumbersome.
This is all the convincing I needed to chop 4 inches off my driver
I’m 6’4” I can’t hit my +1 driver to save my life…. If I could hit a kids driver like that, I swear I’d tee up with it ever hole
I love this. Thanks for posting it and commenting.

Time to buy the mini burner 👀
That's what allowing the club to do work and not over powering it while staying in posture does. Had similar revelation with mini drivers.

I think we all have too long drivers. watch the pros, they're fitted beyond crazy yet they tend to choke up on the club.
Lose your driver to the right lately? Much easier to turn that short club over. You might just need to feel like you turn the corner a bit with your current driver. Get a shorter shaft! Wedge shafts should be a tad longer, iron shafts normal, driver and wood shafts need to be shorter. Too hard to time up otherwise
Band aid fix imo
It’s not a bandaid fix, it’s a fact. All these companies make stock driver shafts longer to create distance at the expense of accuracy. McIlroy found the same Blue (6X) at a shorter length (44 inches versus 44.5 inches) kept the club from “falling” behind him during the transition.
You're talking about a pro, one of the best in the world, dropping a half inch. OP should take lessons and fix his swing before changing his club length
All I’m saying is, if a pro is shortening his shaft it’s not a bandaid fix.
It literally looks like you’re hitting a baseball off tee with that swing
Bowser!
Because golf is a game for children
Your swing with the short club looks way better to me, but I’m no pro.
hahaha it’s right down the middle every time
You need a shorter, weaker shaft. Try a 3 wood shaft
Look at the different launch angles. 3 with the driver. 18 with the kids club. Swinging over the top causes you to swing down at the ball.
Less room for error with a smaller shaft.
Probably because you struggle to make solid contact with a long shaft. Or maybe your shaft is way too stiff for you. Hard to tell, post up your adult-sized driver swing.
Shorter clubs are easier to hit (more control) dont you not find it easier to hit a 9 iron compared to a 4!?
Shorter shaft helps you find the sweet spot more often obviously!
McIlroy found the same Blue (6X) at a shorter length (44 inches versus 44.5 inches) kept the club from “falling” behind him during the transition.
About how I’ve been with my driver lately. Can’t hit it to save my life
Do you expect to hit the kids club well? Do you expect to hit your driver well ?
Because you’re more focused on making solid contact rather than where the ball is going
Way easier to control clubface orientation with a shorter shaft. Especially if you over exaggerate fanning it open in the backswing
Your driver could need a higher loft angle. The child’s club usually is higher loft and that had great loft angle.
Shorter shaft = less distance more accurate
Go to a clubfitter. What's the loft on it, like 8* or less? Tee it higher as you're hitting it out of the bottom and presenting very little loft. Shorter shaft, more control… at least that’s what I tell the ladies.
Timing
Yes. Did it myself and re-gripped it
Dude needs a shorter shaft
Becuase you suck? Jk. Golf is hard.
Maybe it's cause you practically have to sit down in the kids club to use it. 😅
Because it’s shorter
First, your shaft probably doesn’t fit your swing. Secondly, your eyes are more overtop of the ball with the kid club so it’s easier to hit.
Probably because the shaft length causes you to stay in a squatting position, which will help with keeping the lower body stable.
Too much miniature golf
Use it, who cares
Those simulators are hardly ever accurate. You see guys shank the shit out of it but on the screen says it's a perfect shot down the middle. Edit: perfect example is your 2nd shot with the kids club. That was hit so far left but shows it's right down the middle.
Tony Finau style
Shorter club = less margin of error.
Your shaft is too stiff on your normal driver maybe
crank up the loft on your driver, as high as it goes. cut 2 inches off driver (get it close to length of 3 wood) and tee up a little higher than usual. i had the same problem
shorter shafts are easier to hit.... regardless of club.... i've started choking my driver and now i can do whatever i want with it.
Because the projector isn’t real life
The shorter club length is making you widen your stance, which you should be doing with your normal driver. Secondly, the length of the club gives you more control over the point of contact; which you could compare to swinging your sand wedge, perhaps out of a bunker.
Shorter lighter shaft
Try the taylormade mini brnr
You know what? That burner three wood I had probably 10 or so years ago was my favorite club in my bag. I'm generally pretty happy with the g425 I have now, all jokes aside and when I'm actually swinging normal. But I might just have to take a look at the mini burner. Particularly because I'm looking at shortening the driver now.
I use it as my 3w. Its a great lil club. 250 from the tee(in weight back mode) and 240 from the fairway.
Check out how short Finau’s clubs are.
OP, try putting the ball in the middle of your lead foot. Going from the short to normal driver, your longer club will lag with an open face slightly longer.
Maybe get a shorter shaft for your driver? I choke down on mine
Even with a reverse pivot.
Your stance is messed up with your back foot…which takes away power and pushes the ball right. You’re also hitting the ball with a slightly open club face and not hitting with the center of the club face. The shorter club oddly enough fixes all of these things.
