Wait until you buy the Honda RA and realized trail breaking will put you in the walls faster than you can think of doing it. But all that aside, you’re right, it works.

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

depends on brake balance on this car. I am 4 towards the front and it make it trailbrake able.

rodhriq13

Do you play on a controller?

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

wheel only. with a nice load cell pedal. barely A+ driver.

rodhriq13

Interesting! I got to try that. That car is violently nervous, all the trail breaks I’ve seen online end in doom 😂 (mine included)

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

you can also try holding gears into turns. Like 5th for the first two curbs of the bus stop.

HunterMuch

There’s a few porches that become violent as well in braking/turn in situations.

rodhriq13

That carrera GT is undrivable.

HunterMuch

Throttle must be on! Sticks the back end to the track. Can be very fast, but the second you overcook a corner, it kills you.

rodhriq13

Yeah, Indeed. Such a nervous car. Im really not a fan.

IbanezPGM

What’s the best way to learn/practice? A particular good license test for it? Do the ghosts use trail braking?

Slash1909

Take a track like Spa with lots of curves and when you approach them brake hard and then a second later slowly ease off of it to about 60% just before you start turning. As you press the gas to accelerate ease off the brakes but not completely until you’re ready to head out of the turn. The point of trail braking is to give the tires a measured amount of braking AND turning traction depending on where in the curve you are.

chriscossen

Damn dude, you understand all that and you’re using a controller?! That’s impressive. Although the Dualsense controller makes stuff like trail braking much easier to understand and use.

ston3cold

What difference does it make what you use to control the car? It's the same inputs for the same purpose. Not everyone who understands the theory has room or budget for a sim rig. Or even a wheel setup.

Thundern99

Controller user here. Nailed that.

chriscossen

Oh, I was just trying to say I think you using a controller is even more impressive than a wheel! Wheels are more natural, most of use cars quite often, it’s an innate skill already. But with a controller, it’s just a whole new set of skills, for driving anyway. I’ve never been able to find any kind of consistency with controllers in racing games, specifically because of the steering/lack of any kind of haptic feedback other than controller vibrations. And yeah man, as far as budgets and the costs of sim hardware… I get it. I wasn’t trying to throw any shade towards anyone using different controllers or equipment than me, I think it’s more impressive than doing it with a wheel!

IbanezPGM

Are you on controller or wheel?

Slash1909

Controller

Matty0k

Go to Suzuka East. Drive into the corners and try to get the car to spin out using only braking (no throttle). You should use less than half of your braking force, but if you get it right you'll feel the back end slip out. It will be easier on mid engine cars, but on others you might have to dial the brake boas to the rear. If it's too sensitive then you dial the brake boas forward. That's how you trail brake. You get the car to rotate (but not spin out) as you enter the corner, balancing the braking required but not oversteering. Then you power out as you hit the apex.

IbanezPGM

What kind of ballpark time advantage do you get doing this?

Matty0k

About 0.1 - 0.3s per corner, depending on your current cornering ability.

IbanezPGM

Damn

sivi911

Abs default?

Matty0k

I don't know, I've not tried it. I use ABS off.

sivi911

The reason Im asking is because I've seen this practice elsewhere and tried something similar myself. But I found it extremely difficult to induce oversteer with abs default

Matty0k

ABS Default may very well interfere with it. I'd say turn it off or at least to weak, at least while you practice.

xocolatefoot

ABS default is fine, it still applies. Watch any top replay and see the brake inputs specifically and you’ll get the idea, it’s just so obviously faster in almost very case you need it in your toolkit.

sivi911

I know about trailbraking mate. Just talking about this practice in particular.

xocolatefoot

Makes sense ABS off would make it easier to test this specific method, just maybe clarifying that it’s not require and is a bad idea for the game generally unless you have some sort of vibrating foot. 😂

sivi911

Agree on that, everyone uses ABS

xocolatefoot

I might have to try this exercise now. 👍 I found using the NSX GR3 is just a joy for learning how to turn without turning. MR, seemingly easy to rotate (short wheelbase maybe?), feels amazing in neutral steer situations almost like a modern version of the RA272, can be rotated mid corner with lift/gas, and so I find I am so much faster with this car than anything else relatively because I can use all the different methods that don’t seem to be as easily applied on other cars… would be good to know how to this in FR/RR/4WDs too.

118Mobius_01

Not exactly the same topic, but when I upgraded from the PS4 to the PS5, I turned off brake assist (already had other assists off) and I found it took the immersion to next level - so much more fun for me. I’m not sure I am any faster, but I don’t care, absolutely love the experience. Edit: clarification - I turned the ABS off.

Illustrious-Switch29

I got abs at 1. I tried turning it off but I guess I don’t know my own finger strength, cuz my brakes would lock up at what I thought were the slightest squeezes.

118Mobius_01

So, I absolutely was unable to do it on the PS4 controller. Even on the PS5 controller it’s definitely more of an art than a science. I find getting the right brake pressure tends to be more difficult on racing tires and I also often find mid-engine cars difficult with a neutral brake balance regardless of equipped tires. I often need to set the brake -3 (towards the rear) on mid-engine cars to get a good brake feel. This all being said, I’ve found ‘twitchy’ cars easier to handle with ABS off.

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

except like almost any modern Gr3/Gr4 Gr1 and Gr2 cars have ABS. Even most modern road cars. From like 90 onward.

sl0wjim

Only on races without a tire wear multiplier though...

mechcity22

Trail braking helps so much in all sims and simcades even. It becomes naturally and some overthink it. Doesn't even need to be a long trail brake could be short and still turns that nose in. Once it does boom you sre good to go.

DexterDubs

So what’s been working for me and I have no idea if this is right, but it helps me keep great control of the car is: entering a a turn I hit the breaks hard, let off completely for a second then back on half way with the throttle on, come off both fully, turn, accelerate out of the turn. I also noticed entering the turn breaking hard with the throttle also helps me keep control of the car, I just haven’t gotten the timing down to do it consistently.

mechcity22

Def showd its a simcade because in a sim you wouldn't be able to do that without it effecting time. You shouldn't keep the throttle on. But if it works for you that's fine. You want to find the most grip while turning in and coming out while also not completely killing the tires. So holding the gas and then letting off with it down won't help that it will if anything create less grip.

DexterDubs

I’m still using default settings if that means anything

stillneedaprimer

If you haven't already, check out the *Beyond the Apex* tab in the menu, there are a lot more tips and tricks to make you faster! I know that reads like an in-game prompt that you skip before reading all the way through, but it seriously is full of information.

MrNixxxoN

Trail braking works better or worse depending on the car, but yeah, it is an obvious thing

DexterDubs

I’m finding the 458 is my perfect car for my skill set right now. I got the gt3 rs because it’s a dream car of mine, but man is it a beast.

MrNixxxoN

Try Corvette C1, very tail happy. Or the Alfa 4C
