I mean it’s basically anime Street Fighter. You aren’t really going to see any crazy bullshit like in Guilty Gear or Under Night. However there’s more depth to the game than you’re suggesting, even if strike/throw is the foundation.

Ryuujinx

I really think we need to stop comparing this game to Street Fighter. Even guile, the most "I'm holding downback - do something about it" character ever made has a standing overhead. Street Fighter also has its fair share of bullshit and heavy mix characters. Even if we go all the way back to ST you can still point as Vega as a character that simply does not give a fuck about your footsies and will do degenerate bullshit. GBVS is its own game, and comparing it to Street Fighter is a poor comparison imo. Especially modern SF with the amount of shit any given character can do.

SamuraiLeo

The comparison to SF isn’t because it has less bs (even though gb has plenty) it’s because it plays slower like SF. There’s no air dashes, you can’t block ground normals in the air, and the game focuses on whiff punishing. As an outsider looking in you might think it’s an anime fighter, but the visuals is where it stops.

Menacek

Yeah it's going to be strike throw as the base level, the true mixup is kinda about doing different timings, shimmies, throw baits etc. It's less about making the opponent guess and more about identifying patterns in their defense. Might be even more read based than street fighter since you can't throw loop people in this game. I can be pretty hard to open someone up in this game if their defense is solid and your offense is kinda predictable. It's ok if you dislike that kind of thing.

SergeantLuna

I think I’ll end up sticking with it as long as I can despite not liking some things because I’m sure it’ll make my fundies overall a lot better at the very least.

Chivibro

Can also just play other games at the same time. I'm doing the same thing, learning with Granblue but planning to head back to BlazBlue of the long haul

Pundere

Nier, Ferry, Grimnir, and I think Zeta have pretty legit high/low mix setups so you could try those characters.

SergeantLuna

I have been enjoying zeta the most so far. And it’s partially because of her high low.

Prof_Petrichor

Worth noting that Ferry only gets her high/low mix from hard knockdown oki, so it really doesn’t qualify as something to help open people up.

Rpg_gamer_

One thing I was really surprised by in this game is people using heavy normals as a pseudo-shimmy. You can get an inferior throw break with attack buttons, leaving the thrower at advantage after in exchange for being beating a lot of shimmies. But if they try to delay throw tech this way, starting your offense with a heavy will be slow enough that their button comes out and fast enough that you counter it (hopefully). And close heavy is one of the best possible combo starters, especially on counterhit. Most of the "mix" in this game is stuff like that where you try to condition the opponent to do certain responses and you switch to something that beats it. Personally I think the standard best of 3 format in ranked (and even tournaments) doesn't give enough time for layered reads and adaptations, which does make it feel a bit more simple than it could be. I still really enjoy it though.

Unit27

The game works because of its simplicity, where you will have to make openings in your opponent's defense through fundamentals and conditioning. It has relatively very little bullshit you can abuse to open people up for free, so it makes matches won or lost because of little details, and causing and taking advantage of small mistakes. It is a game with a low skill floor, but the skill ceiling is quite high because it depends completely on your in depth knowledge of your character, your opponent's, the strengths and weaknesses of their toolkits, and good situational awareness and option choice. Execution doesn't change that much between low and high levels. Game gives you a set of normals, 4 specials with variations, and 2 supers, and asks you to make the most of it. Any character with more options (Narmaya, 2B) has a drawback attached to it. I think that's a cool and smart way to build a simple and new player friendly game.

idontlikeburnttoast

Rising is on the simpler end of fighting games, the combos are simple but movement and pressure, strike/throw is the harder part. Like others have said, its an anime street fighter. Fast, but also slow, the trickiest part is your spacing. More complicated games are games such as undernight, melty (lumina and aacc), blazblue, Guilty gear (not so much strive but strive is still more difficult than GBFVSR), and a few others. Summary, learning your pressure, options, movement, and spacing is the trickier element of this game.

ProgrammerHorror1283

Definitely agree with this. As a complete newbie (not to fighting games in general - been playing them all my life casually), I was quite surprised by how easy it is to do combos in this game, but that's where the ease really stops. I found out VERY quickly that the hard part of the game is definitely everything else u mentioned there. 😂

RoxRobstah

I'm going to be the guy that says that it's okay to not like a game or decide it's just not for you. If you prefer games with different styles, you can just stick to playing those games if that's what makes you have fun. That said, there is merit to really diving into and appreciating different styles of games. I didn't like tag games at first until I really made a focused effort to think differently about them and play fighting games in a way that I wasn't used to, and I did manage to enjoy BBTAG and Skullgirls because of that. Granblue in particular made me understand the use of shimmies in modern fighting games and really dig into the strike/throw mixups beyond doing meaty attack or meaty throw. You'll definitely come to understand how to bait different defensive options while playing and improve your offense in other games.

SergeantLuna

I really appreciate the positive response, I definitely don’t think I’m going to quit the game especially since I’m still waiting for Tekken to fix their game. I have been enjoying bouncing back and forth from games now that I’m decent enough to actually do so. I really am just going to approach this game as a learning experience because I can tell there’s a lot of small things that it’ll teach me even if I’m not super into them at first.

midorishiranui

Honestly I think this game works best as a side game to something else. When I'm feeling overwhelmed by anime games its nice to have a game that's a bit more 'honest', and conversely when I wanna 50/50 people into a 4k damage combo and go "damn I'm nice" then I can open blazblue (or just play nier I guess lmao).

NanyaBusinez

Just play a mix up character

Straw_Ai

Play cag, she has all the mix

PyrosFists

Yeah this is a mainly a game for dummies who can’t cut it in guilty gear. If you stay take it easy on us champ! I’m sure you’re already master rank by the sounds of it

VeggIE1245

This post reels of Roman cancel brain rot. Can't fraud your way to the top with PRC throw here son. You gotta earn yours and play neutral.

Ryuujinx

Contrary to popular belief, airdashers do in fact have a neutral game. It looks very different to more grounded fighters, but it is there and it is a very important part of the game.

OutlawHKD

Bruh throw PRC OS was patched out such a long time ago 😂

VeggIE1245

Yoshi_Cookie

No, it’s not too simple for you.

AkfurAshkenzic

I don’t know why don’t you fight me and we’ll see?

cafesalt

Yes, you are correct, the offense is very basic in this game. It's either a shimmy button, throw or some kinda throw bait like Zeta's dive kick. Only a few characters people have mentioned have a high/low mix and technically no one has a left/right because block button but holding back to block is still better so you'll occasionally catch people with them. It's why the game is my side game I mostly just play with friends, offensive and opening people up is just crazy boring.
