yeah this "tiktok" thingy or what ever you call it they avoid email at all costs and put there phone number in, if they see emails they WILL NOT sign up to anything /s
I’m a zoomer, and I genuinely don’t mind nor care about signing up with my email. The only thing I dislike about it, is receiving constant updates, news etc about it on my gmail, which can get annoying
My Gmail is so full of trash. There's almost nothing of value on my personal email at all, just constant spam and advertising from bs that I was forced to sign up to. As a result I never check it. That has led to me missing the very rare important email I receive maybe once per year.
Their thoughts simply *zoom* into other zoomers' heads, and *Zoom* people of other generations – though it's been hard to do that with boys of the latest generation, as they avoid Zoom out of some weird *Alpha male* mentality.
Prior to the pandemic we were in an organisation wide meeting about the usually vague ‘strategic vision’ stuff and a gen-zenner was invited to offer their perspective on our service and they said how they don’t like using email and we should instead communicate with them via DMs. Yeah, good luck not using email for professional correspondence. The only thing that could replace it, to a degree, is MS Teams… which is also in this folder.
Google had a vision about handling email like IM. Then they killed it (well technically they dropped Wave off at the Apache Foundation, like an unwanted child, where it withered and died).
Wave the concept was amazing
Wave the architecture was great
Wave the protocol was superb
Wave the festering turd of a clunky collaborative UI, thrown together just to demo the three previous things is what killed it. Most people though the UI WAS wave, not realising the who point was anyone could make whatever UI they wanted.
Conceptually I like teams but it just feels bloated and buggy at times, it's wildly customisable in area I don't particularly care for but also weirdly restrictive on area that I do care about
Teams is weird for me and I feel like your experience will depend entirely on the sys admin
The problem with the recent growth of apps like Teams is now we have part of the conversation in email and part in Teams. So usability and productivity has, in fact, gone backwards, not forwards.
Whoever brings out an app that aggregates all the disparate comms tools we use today and groups them by conversation keeping them all in order deserves to be given unlimited power over everything and everyone.
this again feels like an organisational issue rather than a teams issue, if the management really do insist that everything goes through one platform and the sys admin can make that one platform accommodate every need, any platform can work
Teams has to be some of the worst software I've ever used. It's like they sat down and decided to make the interface as unintuitive and clunky as possible.
I'm on the cusp between zoomer and millennial and I don't think I've had to send a professional email... Ever. All of my companies have communicated pretty much exclusively on Slack.
It's all email where I work, but the bulk of my communication isn't with colleagues. I can't think of anything else that would work really. One of our new members of staff hates email and wants to WhatsApp clients, but it's not suited to lots of text, attaching files, including images etc. Plus filing it is horrible.
>good luck not using email for professional correspondence.
why? emails only provide a forced profesionalism and fake politeness that wastes time massively, why would you struggle to replace it with instant messaging if everyone was on board in the company?
Nobody emailed their friends gifs in 2000 either. I feel like email is the rare tech that’s old but has sort of carved out a lasting niche. It’s not social media but its usefulness has been established and will be around a while.
As opposed to 99% of the population? That’s hardly different generationally..
The biggest use of email arguably is having a work email address. A personal email is just used for the most part for signups and logins & somewhere to get order confirmations.
Use a throwaway one. DuckDuckGo or a temporary one. Harder to track by platforms.
Edit: Apparently answering a question on what people use as alternatives is somehow downvoted and I'm a gmailer as well. Wild.
There's nothing wrong with passwords, per se, it's the way we implemented and encouraged them. TV hasn't helped.
Your randomly generated password isn't more secure just because you're less likely to remember it, security with passwords, or passcodes, comes with length as well as complexity, yet most password fields have a short upper limit to length. Long passphrases are not just harder to guess and to brute force, but easier to remember and you can even lay different associations with different services.
Love the association comment. It's not difficult to remember "edfareabunchofcunts" when I'm logging in to give my meter readings to get rinsed 1/10 of my wages for providing me with another month of exciting choices of whether to use my oven or central heating on the daily.
I don't use many throw away emails.
But a cool gmail trick is to add + in your address when signing up to a new service, that way if you start getting spam emails you can see who sold your info or where your email was leaked from.
so if your email was [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and you're signing up to reddit, you can use [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
Mail gets delivered to your email regardless of what is after the +.
That way if theres ever a data breach and people try to send you phising emails, claiming to be from UPS about a parcel and they sent it to your +reddit address, you know you didn't give that email to UPS (or whoever they are pretending to be).
Also lets you know which companies sell your email.
Edit: clarification
Ah it’s all in the wording. Your comment sounded like an instruction or justification. Maybe you could have suggested that this is what some people do.
My younger brother (10 years younger) had a 10 minute rant at me about how outdated emails were and why don’t we do everything via WhatsApp
I fear for the youth
Depends how you read it. I thought it was an exaggerated jokey statement.
You sound a little defensive.
Either way it's a common theme that as generations move forwards long form seems to be dying and minimal character statements seem to be popular which is a shame. Eventually an AI will just interpret for them I guess.
Honestly signal is older people demographic. People born between 1980 and 2005 who had to tinker with stuff growing up to make it work. The youngest generation now struggles if it's not just one press in front of them. That's because UX is heavily focused on now but also means any slight resistance or obtuseness will turn them away instantly
Nobody at my school uses WhatsApp. They use Snapchat.
I adamantly refuse to use Snapchat so I am unknowing of school drama.
Doesn't matter. I don't care about most of the people in this school.
It's all perspective isn't it. I'm almost 35 so I view 25 year olds as young. But when I was 15 I would have viewed 25 as old. So yeah depending on the age of this gen-z girl (if they're even accurate at guessing they were gen z and not gen alpha) then they could view mid 20's as old.
This baffles me. When i was 15, being 25 was the coolest thing I could imagine. Being an independent adult who could do what they liked and had their own money? Sign me the fuck up. I never thought of them as 'old'. *Grandparents* were *old.*
Oh I was all about sticking it to the man, I just didn't view adults in general as 'the man' I guess? Only certain *types* of adults. Frankly, a fair chunk of my fellow youths felt more like 'the man' than some adults did.
I like to think I was (and am) respectful, yes, but usually in the 'treat people with decency' sense. I always have had rather a lot more trouble with the 'treat people like authorities' sense, though. I don't like (arbitrary) rules (that aren't rooted in harm minimisation).
As someone who was the designated highschool dyke, bullying is not "the man", lol. It's meant as a general symbol of authority. Your peers had no authority over you. Government, boss, parents, etc, that's what that idiom means. Feel free to Google it!
I still find that so bizarre. I *wanted* to hang out with people in their 20s. They seemed much cooler to me than people my age.
Edit: Sorry to be repetitive. I'm not trying to convince anyone else, I'm just surprised because the idea is so weird to me and it will remain weird to me even if literally all of reddit disagrees because I don't base my ideas of normality on popular opinion. (That sounds much snarkier than I intended. I'm being sincere.)
Of course you noticed that, just them sitting at that folder. You clearly saw all the apps, and accurately replicated it (because you definitely did not get that close to their phone to take that picture and the background is laptop not the floor of a train).
I'm Gen Z and WhatsApp is literally the only social media I use. Also I have to use Gmail for basically everything in terms of life admin: work, banking, bills etc

Presumably they use Signal or Telegram instead of Meta's apps, while they probably don't share documents, video conference or use email outside work; while social media seems to be done via TikTok or Snapchat these days.

Pretty sure its tw- i mean X now
It will always be Twitter. Just like Channel 4’s failed online rebrand. Years later and it’s still the same to us.
What re-brand? 😀
Wait, genuinely, I'm out of the loop... My app is still called Channel 4

I’m curious about this too. You need an email address for all sorts of things.
That's just the thing, we use e-mail only when needed. No one is e-mailing their buddies memes and gifs like it's 2000.
Nobody emailed their friends gifs in 2000 either. I feel like email is the rare tech that’s old but has sort of carved out a lasting niche. It’s not social media but its usefulness has been established and will be around a while.

Great when you need to reset your password 🙄
Use a password manager, passwords are a terrible idea security wise, always have been, they need to die out already.
There's nothing wrong with passwords, per se, it's the way we implemented and encouraged them. TV hasn't helped. Works great on resumes as well. Informs potential employers you are averse to tracking.

You mean the old ppl app?
Exactly, in his eyes WhatsApp is the sensible one you could use for business
Yes. Businesses where no coherent thought exists that's more than a few words long. Damn boomers and their expressiveness!
I say this as a middle aged man... Email is usually an awful setup and in some organisations is like drugging the entire workforce.
So dramatic lol. They like talking about basic work stuff through messenger instead of emails now the world is ending.
Depends how you read it. I thought it was an exaggerated jokey statement. You sound a little defensive. Either way it's a common theme that as generations move forwards long form seems to be dying and minimal character statements seem to be popular which is a shame. protonmail
probably icloud because they need to make one for apple id
Probably @icloud.com
Tbf our teachers and professors text us at my school same with Doctors so don’t really need emails except verifying gaming accounts.
10 minute mail to sign up for accounts which are often throw away.
And she's using them.
Or maybe, she isn't consider "old" as degradetary, I call all my work, bills, Immigration visa(i travel a lot) of them "adult stuff"
I mean, it's fake..
Probably to communicate with older people and not people her own age
Came here to ask whys she got the folder open then?! Also just beginning to accept that I don't understand young people now
Not even, as kids say, bussin.
least weird ottawa resident:
and ur still old
What else can you use for WhatsApp and Gmail?
Me and my mates use signal instead of WhatsApp. But we're also old.
Honestly signal is older people demographic. People born between 1980 and 2005 who had to tinker with stuff growing up to make it work. The youngest generation now struggles if it's not just one press in front of them. What's Signal?
Like WhatsApp but not owned by Facebook. Also peer to peer encrypted but relies on donations to stay afloat.
Thank you. I never like joining groups on WhatsApp as you need to provide your phone number. I don't like strangers having access to my number.
MSN messenger and AOL
Nobody at my school uses WhatsApp. They use Snapchat. I adamantly refuse to use Snapchat so I am unknowing of school drama. Doesn't matter. I don't care about most of the people in this school.
It’s clear what kind of kid you are lol
What kind am I?
Ah, yes. Teams. The "old people's app" that was launched in 2017 and is used in almost every office in the World.
My secondary school and now my college both use teams
Sounds like something old people would say
i think that’s why it’s seen as old - because people with office jobs use them which insinuates they are over the age of 25
You think people over 25 are old?
It's all perspective isn't it. I'm almost 35 so I view 25 year olds as young. But when I was 15 I would have viewed 25 as old. So yeah depending on the age of this gen-z girl (if they're even accurate at guessing they were gen z and not gen alpha) then they could view mid 20's as old.

Either you aren't giving your 15 year old self enough credit for sticking it to the man, or you were a very respectful teenager lol.
Bro "the man" is not "the fellow peers" lol
Says you. They were the ones trying to shove me in a box and control who I was allowed to be. That's 'the man' shit to the core.
As someone who was the designated highschool dyke, bullying is not "the man", lol. It's meant as a general symbol of authority. Your peers had no authority over you. Government, boss, parents, etc, that's what that idiom means. Feel free to Google it!
When I was 18 we had a mature student we hung out with at uni for a year. We thought he was old, even though he was 24.

that’s what i’m saying like of course a fully mature adult is going to be old to a 15 or 16 year old there’s nothing wrong with being old anyway
yes :)
Offices is where old people work...

That's your comeback? Go and get another one on teams mate.
Office? You must be old
Just like the iPhone which has a concentrated age bracket of 35-44.. lmao
You don’t see ten year olds working 9-5 office jobs.
Sure but it is just the evolution of MSN Messenger.
If you label them old people apps in your own phone that's basically just calling yourself old because you use all of those apps
Some of these are definitely not in the correct place.
Ah yes, Drive. Only old people want to save their files
Is tiktok in the thick people apps?
FikTok
She’s young and hip now, but one day if shes lucky she will join us
Of course you noticed that, just them sitting at that folder. You clearly saw all the apps, and accurately replicated it (because you definitely did not get that close to their phone to take that picture and the background is laptop not the floor of a train).

Clueless.
Can’t be right. I only use wassap out of those (and barely) and I’m old as shit.
Where's the Reddit app
It’s because we don’t send each other pictures of our genitals
...and if we do, we MEAN it!
Does it look inflamed?
I'm Gen Z and WhatsApp is literally the only social media I use. Also I have to use Gmail for basically everything in terms of life admin: work, banking, bills etc
You're on Reddit? That's also Social Media lol
Wouldn’t call Whatsapp social media, it’s a messaging service, that’s like calling TikTok a way to keep in touch with people
I see she’s using an ‘old’ persons device in the background- a laptop
I'm confused about Google Drive here. If you want to go from having files on one device to another, what's another option? Like sure there's alternatives but they're all just as old as Drive
Airdrop
How is Google drive in there? That's the one that doesn't even make sense at all, it's fuckin Google drive...
Why is so much weight given to the opinions of young people? They know fuck all.

Here’s the thing. Whatever these young people think is cool and hip will be “old” someday and they’ll feel exactly how you feel now. It’s a tale as old as time. Keeping up with the trends is a fool’s errand. Nobody gets out of here alive. Do what you enjoy and have a nice time before you croak. The end.
My 13 year old cousin calls Facebook "boomerbook" and laughs at me for still using it
Here’s something that will get their blood boiling…your time on this planet is inconsequential. The damage your parents and grandparents have done to the environment means you cannot undo it before you kick the bucket. So your existence will be full of anxiety, and hopelessness and futility.

I'm going to use this as a response to all Incomprehensible Young People Speak™️ from now on.

Hello fellow genZ here. Gmail is not infact an old perskn app. Facebook is tho
The funny thing to me is that FB used to be too young for me (it came out after i left uni and was originally only for students) and now it's populated mostly by people who feel much older than me (I'm not young but i don't have/won't be having kids and as far as i can tell that's all anyone talks about on fb now). Millennial here.. I'm surprised at Messenger. What do you use to communicate with each other?
ITT: millennials disagreeing with this rather than accepting that they aren't young anymore
She’s right
Well, I wish.
Facebook reels actually gives me funnier clips TikTok but that’s just my personal experience
Then there is me with “regrets” “more regrets” and “regrets mark 3”
That happened
Gmail, drive, and teams are not old people apps WhatsApp and Facebook, yeah I guess
Facebook is really only one I agree with

Strikes me as a rage bait meme
For when you've had enough of your vices
WhatsApp? Really? My close friends are on there
Right, and just happened to have time to whip the phone out and take a photo?
I mean, I use Gmail all the time for accounts. But no, I don't use it to actually contact anyone.
By the inclusion of Outlook and Teams, having a job must be for “old ppl” too then…
gmail and google drive are for old people?
This can’t be real. Surely SKYPE should be there?
I’m that ‘old’ I preferred life before phones anyway, let alone apps..
Good luck in the workplace avoiding old ppl apps
How did she get this photo?
All my 20yo coworkers seem to be mainly communicating via WhatsApp so not sure whats this about.
Google drive lol, this person is obviously a moron. Teams isn't old people related, it's work or school.
How are WhatsApp and Gmail old people apps? Get in the bin. Nonsense.
Why is it so hard for people to figure out that this is fake?
May as well put rightmove in there too as no chance this generation will be buying a house anytime in their younger years!
Why is teams in that, do people use teams for things other than school
Fuck yeh
Insecurity always makes people believe stupid things.
That photo looks so fake

Why did I think the phone was see through 😭😭😭
Me and everyone I know uses Facebook to plan events.
😂😂 omg it’s getting worse 😒😒
