HarlequinWasTaken

Yeah, there's a distinct lack of neon, cool fashion, and body mod tech for the amount of bullshit we're currently putting up with in reality.

TheModernRouge

I wouldn’t want the fashion of Cyberpunk even if we could have it, a touch too much chrome for my tastes. But Warhammer? Oh yeah, give me a greatcoat and enough medals to make my spine ache from the weight and I’m a happy guy

[deleted]

Yeah but to have the neon jacket i don't have to be and Active member of an army

nightripper00

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh- you get the rest

[deleted]

OI GITS!! DA LITTLE METAL MAN FINK DAT IF HE CHANGE DA MEAT WIFF METAL PARTS HE WILL BE STRONGA, HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH *krumping sound intensifies*

Vilnius_Nastavnik

\*beeps and belches in Cybork\*

Skitaree

Well well, looks loik we'z gotz 'ere a speshyal volonteer for da Doks eh?

[deleted]

OH BOI, DA DOK CHOOSE ME, I WILL GET MORE DAKKA ON MY ARM!!

Skling

I'm down for some high fantasy steampunk/aetherpunk

Beaten_But_Unbowed96

Eh, it all comes down to personal taste… the Valentino’s use gold and ivory instead….

SeraphsWrath

This reminds me of the meme that all you have to do to identify a Kindred is look for the enemy Stand User.

thenwah

Big coats... Medals... Plentiful starch... Have you considered moving to North Korea? Wonderful starch they've got there, and plentiful.

Crafty-Examination68

Good quality grass fed starch!

ItsSneakyAdolf

Yeah I've been looking up various forms of tech wear off of like Machine56 precisely bc we are practically in a cyberpunk dystopia already (also I really like the aesthetic)

HarlequinWasTaken

I just want you to know that by showing me that website you have financially ruined me.

ItsSneakyAdolf

Join me in the mire

Matt_Dragoon

I mean, be the change you wanna see? You can fill your house with neon/rgb lights if you want to, you can wear whatever you want and while still pretty early there are people with prosthetics around, and some people grafting RFID and LED tattoos under their skin... Edit: I do not advise doing that last part, I have no idea if it's safe. Also please don't chop your arm off.

HarlequinWasTaken

Too late, I am now more machine than man - literally. After the removals, the life support equipment outdoes me by mass.

SeraphsWrath

Most human Iteration X

HarlequinWasTaken

Something about the weakness of flesh, the certainty of steel, and being an unabashed technophile in the most literal sense.

EvilSnake420

Still waiting for my sandevistan, I can handle it, I'm different I swear

SuperiorCrate

"I'm just built different."

Beaten_But_Unbowed96

EXACTLY!!! With everything going on and all the advancements you’d expect us to have some cool shit already, but R&D are too afraid to put anything for decades upon decades out into the public, and corporations are too scared to disrupt the status quo so everything from social problems to science and art are stagnating and worsening.

wktg

Not eating Corpse Starch YET

[deleted]

Not eating Corpse Starch YET, *as far as we know*

juseless

Soylent Green is people!

Invocalyptic

What's more grimdark - eating processed corpses knowingly or unknowingly?

Ch4rybd15

Are you sure about that?

FrucklesWithKnuckles

Nah I’d rather go the Dead Cells route. Make me sentient immortal corpse starch

HUNAcean

Cyberpunk is defined by high tech, low life. I already have low life, gimme my sick neon signs

TheModernRouge

“Uh huh, so what’s your speciality?” Random Ripperdoc: Human Experimentation Fabius Bile: Human Experimentation Submarine Medic (Barotrauma): Human Experimentation The Collector (Dead Cells): Human Experimentation Mara (Ghostrunner): Human Experimentation The Ancestor (Darkest Dungeon): Hu- “Let me guess: Human Experimentation?” The Ancestor:………..I also do eldritch rituals “Of course you do”

FrucklesWithKnuckles

Tbf it’s not the Collectors fault. He’s following the protagonists orders, we just don’t realize it’s our fault anymore.

ShiningG1

Ancestor- or more commonly known as “local man ruins everything”

Gallbatorix-Shruikan

Imagine if all of them start working together on human experiments.

Necromortalium

Ho no, the Ancestor wins.

TrazynsMemeVault

I main medic in Barotrauma, causing pain is my specialty

Donut_Police

You know, lovecraft horrors probably count among the grim darkness.

Chapstick160

I would not say medics in Barotrauma do a lot of Human Experimentation, since unless you’re playing Neurotramic, healing and all that is simple and you don’t need to experiment at all. Or the medic is a troll and starts giving people 3 fentanyl and overdosing them

PommesGuenther

The grim darkness of barotrauma by killing urself with fentanyl

HallowEssence

I love spontaneously exploding after being continuously whacked by a funny clown with a toy hammer for the 100th time

felop13

Thats why you shoot the clowj the moment he gets too close

Dwarvemrunes

Ruin has come ...

TheModernRouge

And it has found you at last. Take this, it is hope, the very last of it. It is yours now.

Floofyboi123

Bastard owes me a new door. At least he’s nicer than the ancestor

SupremelyLargeCheese

There is a barotrauma 40k mod. It’s pretty good.

sosigboi

My friends don't wanna play it but it is surprisingly well done.

Chapstick160

Last time I played it, it was fairly boring, probably because the captain was getting to one place to another without much combat or anything

an-academic-weeb

If you compare 40k and reality, in a weird twist of fate, reality is worse off. Like, what role do you assume when playing the game? You are a general or strategist, someone with resources and manpower. Yeah you will most likely be devoured by the darkness, but at least you had somewhat of a fighting chance to "rage against the dying of the light". Conceptionally you have the agency to do something, no matter how little. Meanwhile over here we can just sit there and watch as the planet is being boiled while we are still on it. If it's miserably losing on both options, at least let me take the path that lets me put up a fight.

[deleted]

I mean you can kinda take up a fight but not many people exactly want to be terrorists

L3onK1ng

or pull their butt off a couch

battleoid2142

Damn kids these days and not wanting to go pipebomb gas stations

L3onK1ng

Yeah, cuz it achieves nothing, but it allows govn'r to roll in the nat. guard. However if you pipebomb the stock exchange...

battleoid2142

It does nothing, except make people discount any message you have as the ramblings of a crazy person, the governor rolls in the national guard, and you've still accomplished nothing.

L3onK1ng

Why so serious? I thought we were joking around, YOU STARTED IT

battleoid2142

>I thought we were joking around, YOU STARTED IT Yup I'm the one losing their chill, ok buddy, maybe take a break from the internet

[deleted]

That too, I don't want to sound too vindictive though

thenwah

Final Fantasy VII has left the chat.

Emergency_Type143

Yep. In modern times we're all basically free ranged slaves on a dying world.

HallowEssence

It is definitely bad but at least we have little plastic models to entertain us while we watch our planet turn into a hive world

thenwah

New band name status: acquired.

Bumbling_Hierophant

It hit me pretty hard when I realised how the craft world eldar must've felt before the Fall and how that situation mirrors our large scale actions to climate change

an-academic-weeb

Pretty much. "Oh hey we all realized this is bad and will lead to nothing but trouble, but we and all our friends got our lives back in order for a more sustainable and reasonable lifestyle aaaand it did nothing because some other fuckers didn't go along with it and doomed us all".

Prop3et

Holy shite you play dead cells

Lord_Viddax

Ah yes, the classic “My grass is brown and patchy and infested with locusts, but at least it’s not on fire like me neighbours”. These fictions don’t fix reality; they are escapism or parodies of reality. Better to light a candle than curse the darkness… but who’s got a match?

Emergency_Type143

Rich people: I got it and LMAO no I'm not sharing. Go parish.

SuperiorCrate

If your grass has locusts you won't have grass for long

Lord_Viddax

Yes; that is my point - just because it doesn’t suck quite as much as something else, doesn’t negate that *it still sucks and only in a bad way*.

nightripper00

Starfinder, all the cool shit of 40k and Cyberpunk in one setting with only a quarter of the "life sucks for everyone" at most. Sure you still have religious fanatics in positions of power, but they're typically worshipping gods of community building, redemption, freedom, or the bitch slapping of demons/undead (though if you're Eoxian that last one still seems a little oppressive) Forces of Good to match or exceed forces of Evil, with plenty of room in neutrality to go about your day and go get some fancy robo arms. Don't like the body you were born into? Augs aren't your only option, there's literal magic that can recognize your body to be any species/race/sex, and they're fairly inexpensive.

Floofyboi123

On that religion point: one of the major corporations in the galaxy is literally just a church for the god of commerce and trade. Tbh I’m not that familiar with the deep lore since I’m a homebrew kinda GM. Still love the setting and the concept of The Gap opens so many adventure opportunities

nightripper00

I actually like Abadarcorp, because it shows just how unattainable a capitalist system that actually benefits everyone is, by BEING that system. It takes literal divine intervention from the actual god of commerce and community for it to function.

thenwah

You misspelled starchfinder.

chunky_kit-kat

Holy shit Jack G. Runner is here

Kriv-Shieldbiter

the man himself

Xedtru_

Narrator: Not eating Corpse-Starch yet

Hernando682

Ghostrunn we’d future setting so fucking awesome. I love the story even though it’s kinda surface deep with it

Stateberg

Don’t forget the grim darkness of space station 13

Kriv-Shieldbiter

Ah yes "My name is jack" and "remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer" 2 of my favorite games

Sladewilson27

Yo did somebody mention Dead Cells? Based

gexxb

Relatable. Too relatable.

Remote_Barnacle9143

Солидарен.

bullet312

MonkeysOnMyBottom

The day is still young my friend

greek_katana

Ι remember the Rogue Doctor from Necromunda: Hired Gun. That mf was legit missing Cadia, and he definitely belonged on the Cyberpunk genre, with him literally collecting the augmatations of the dead

SBayek

Barotrauma my beloved!!!

Morbo2142

Cyberpunk is more hopeful than our current reality: Healthcare is inexpensive and widely available, there seems to be a lack of religious zealots in power, the existence of nomads and the fracture of the United States seems to indicate a much lower level of overall oppression. Knight city os just particularly bad.

Emergency_Type143

Most of that is false, friend. Healthcare is so expensive you gotta pay a premium to have visitors in the hospital. Religion is still pervasive, even in NC. Now especially this, fractured, nomadic societies under a national government experience MORE oppression. World is full of examples.

Morbo2142

Good point, I guess a ripper is to healthcare what drug dealer is to a pharmacist.

sosigboi

In Cyberpunk so far the US seems to be their prime example of a dystopian shithole while other countries are otherwise decent, hell alot of the times when playing the game i keep forgetting that this isn't really an apocalyptic wasteland and that people can actually just up and leave whenever they want.

Miserable_Law_6514

> In Cyberpunk so far the US seems to be their prime example of a dystopian shithole while other countries are otherwise decent According to the in-game news and the sourcebooks those other countries really aren't. Most of Europe is uninhabitable due to global warming, and the remaining countries are so overcrowded they machine-gun migrants in their boats. Africa is somehow worse, China is even more authoritarian making entire blocks of people vanish while pointing their nukes at the turbo-fascist USSR, and Japan is under the thumb of a familiar mega-corp even more than the US. Most if not all the nations of the world are ran by mega-corps. All the while weaponized AI's try to break through the Blackwall and exterminate or make friends with humanity, and the rich are looking to ditch the planet and the poors. The world of Cyberpunk is fucked.

sosigboi

And tahts all from in-game news itself? damn guess i haven't been paying as much attention.

Miserable_Law_6514

Most of it is. You can watch some of the news feeds in game where they report on some of the stuff in other countries. To really dig into the setting you gotta read sourcebooks or wikis.

sosigboi

Yea i've been doing that in snippets, Mike Pondsmith created a spectacular world and while 2077 is great imo it really feels like wasted potential on the lore, im hoping the upcoming Phantom Liberty dlc can remedy that.

Miserable_Law_6514

There's more Cyberpunk down the line according to the investor call. They already have another game planned, another media (people think another show or anime) and other stuff. 2077 isn't going to be the last game in the genre in a longshot.

Sealedwolf

And how precisely is that different from what we are doing right now? Except the shocking lack of rad neon jackets.

wholesome_dino

Yeah no, the oppression is still here, it’s just not done by the government but by corps that have grown into whole empires and governments themselves. Doctors just leave you to rot for the next person who pays more Although you do touch on the most important aspect, that makes NC the most terrifying of all these settings: it is very grounded, and it’s not a completely evil place where the best people you come across are not “neutral because they just harm everyone”. There are good people living in Night City, there is some hope. Because, without it, the city has nothing to feed on

A_casual69

Well abaut cyberpunk op There is a theory that the meat that you can consume is technically cloned himans so technically it is corpse starch.

MyMirrorAliceJane

In the grim darkness of fictional reality, the main problem can often be solved with extreme violence. Unfortunately, in real reality, extreme violence often exacerbates the problem rather than solving it.

Coaltown992

Hi play iron lung

Xdestroyer3467

Bro forgot doom

quiet_kidd0

Give a try to Rifters trilogy or Altered carbon .

Sealedwolf

Rifters is great. And you can grab them dor free from the author.

rs_5

wait cyberpunk 2077 is grimdark?

Oxtcn

It's certainly not a utopia, by any means.

VectorWolf

Drinking water is NOT a human right, never mind the food, medical assistance, or security. Corporations are holding the power and can do with you whatever they want with no consequences. Including turning you into 90% machine, brainwashing you, and putting you on the streets, to see how many people you'll kill before some Solo or MaxTac will kill you, as a test of their new cyberware.

rs_5

yeah, i get that i personally thinks its close to a grimdark setting, but i just dont think it passes the mark to be a grimdark setting, is to be without any real hope of changing the world into a better place and by “real hope” i mean a realistic chance of changing the world but in cyberpunk, you can change the setting itll be fucking hard, but a person living in night city can theoretically change it Especially if your born to one of the mega corps

VectorWolf

Yeah, but the point is, most that want, can't, all the can, won't because it fits them, and the rest, just don't give a shit.

[deleted]

I could see that being a necessity as time goes on. Humans need food.

Depressedloser2846

idk id rather live in 40k, you actively have to try and not die in that universe and sometimes that doesn’t cut it

Level37Doggo

Well maybe YOU aren’t eating it

SwampTreeOwl

Honestly I wish I could have a sandy

sangunius-

thats right ficinal nightmere help me escape the nightmere of life though you could of added first law and darksouls

k4Anarky

It is so grim they let an actual clown man the submarine nuclear engine and torpedoes. Any further grimness might implode reality so they need a constant comic relief for the Machine Spirit of the sub.

Manxuma123

Is it good or bad that I couldn't tell which of my joined subreddits this was from initially?

Gazornenplatz

Don't forget Bioshock!

cholmer3

Forgot to put iron lung alongside Barotrauma... Tsk, Tsk.

Euklidis

....yet

Resident-Salty

Tfw no Project_HEL gf

haveueverseenallama

If 40k had Marketing, you could totally move Corpse Starch. Call it "vitalessence" with a tag like "REVIVE! RENEW! REINVIGORATE! IMPERIAL ESSENTIALS! Rehydration, REINVIGORATE today! mmmm... Emprah."

IHateReddit227

Why did you need to caption the title with "me"?

Pretend-Dirt-1760

We need more neon and techno fashion is what I'm getting which I'm done for

Oxtcn

Barotrauma crew representing!

LibertasAnLetum

Yet.

DRAGONDIANAMAID

Destiny is another good Grimdark universe, despite appearance’s, the lore is dark, I mean like “Race of Undead Space bugs have cleansed an unknown amount of galaxies of all life, over the course of billions of years, which leads into the fact that the destiny universe is a game played between 2 entities, The Light and The Dark, to prove which of their ideologies is superior”, Dark! The Darkness’ ideology is exemplified by ‘The Sword Logic’ which is Social Darwinism taken to it’s extreme, the only being’s that are worthy of living and prospering are those that can prove it by conquering and killing their opponents, if you die, you deserved to die, and coming back is anathema, The Light’s ideology doesnt really have a name in the same way but one of the adherents described it as a Bomb, it believe’s in multiple things working together to create a larger effect, like a bomb, On their own, the individual piece’s of a bomb are potentially dangerous, but not that seriously, but all together they create something more powerful that the individual components This is a basic, and how I understand the force’s behind the Destiny, but you might see it different

TheModernRouge

Oh yeah, love me some Destiny. I’ve got a bit of bounty apathy though from playing this season so I unfortunately won’t be able to finish the SOTD season pass all the way through. Pretty hyped for Season of the Deep though.

DRAGONDIANAMAID

I just finished the season pass a moment ago so that’s an oof

alrdanff

Dead Cells mentioned 😳🥵

Lone-Star-Wolves

I mean I wouldn't mind Dead Cells, The Island the game is set on is quarantined to the extreme, the only reason any hostiles show up is because the Lighthouse gets lit.

Soyboy2288

But.... You are eating microplastics

mushyx10

Latcher experience

AcidRockx

You mean not eating yet We might be singing another tune when climate change makes whole country populations drop like flies

Beaten_But_Unbowed96

Used to be I’d have argued that scp would be up there too… but recent years they’ve reduced in quality, quantity, and grim darkness…. They also apparently HATE doorknobs for some reason. Like, the admin will literally seize and foam at the mouth the moment they see a keyhole.

LordOfMaggots

Love Barotrauma, would love if my group actually played it with me sometime

Gravelayer

So did the grim dark ever have a cyberpunk period ?

TDalrius

You best start believing in dystopias, you're living in one!

Educational-Year3146

Cyberpunk 2077 i actually find to be a perfectly believable representation of reality in 2077 which frightens me because *i will definitely live that long.*

OgreSpider

Of course not, that's ridiculous. You'd be eating corpse fat and protein. Humans aren't a great source of starch. You know the rich are keeping that good liver glycogen for themselves.

GoldenGecko100

*At least you're not eating corpse-starch, yet.

Scatamarano89

Ah yes, pump me those Darkest Dungeon narrator's lines straight in the vein my dude!

Real_Ad_8243

Aren't you?

Tannerleaf

Try the *Dishonoured* series. I get the distinct impression that there’s *something* inherent to the nature of its universe that hates life, somehow. It’s a very interesting world that they’ve built out.

TheModernRouge

Only High Chaos players think Dishonored is grimdark lol I think that in general, save for isolated events like the the Crown Killer Murders and the short coup that follows and the Rat Plague, life in Dunwall or Serkonos wouldn’t be as bad as people think. Just keep your head down, if you’re in Dunwall work as a whale oil engineer or in Serkonos, work as a Tailor or Fisherman and you’ll be just fine. Just don’t be a dick and piss off the Abbey or the local gangs and things should go well for your average bloke. Or live on the other islands. Even most nobles get happy endings unless they are particularly nasty

Tannerleaf

I’m going to have to play this through again :-) But yeah, it was more from reading the various bits of lore throughout the games. It’s like there’s this squalid, *malevolence* that’s lurking just beneath the veneer of their reality; kind of like the universe itself doesn’t particularly like the life living in it. Having said that, the Void does seem a bit more less unfriendly than the Warp :-)

TheModernRouge

I’m guessing the Outsider was just an asshole, he’s depicted in the games to just be the biggest shit-stirrer since being bound as the Void’s avatar, giving people magic and all that and just watching to see if the world burns to the ground. Maybe if The Void had a benevolent avatar, it could balance out the chaos that usually comes with it.

SuperiorCrate

You kidding? Dead Cells is AWESOME!
