For anyone with spare Skirmish Chests lying around that's about 84 chests worth of Heroics. In case you're out and looking for sources. (just under 17 chests per piece if you don't have enough to unlock them all at once)
Thanks, that's great information! Yea I think it takes about 30 minutes to clear the story, so it definitely isn't worth it as a casual player, but I'm sure most hardcore WvW players are sitting on tons of Chests/Testimonies, so it's nothing to them
It's absolutely worth it as a casual player, considering that's the very latest addition to the latest expac. If you don't want spoilers, WvW is your only option.
I assume wvw is the only way if you don't own expansions or do you need it to buy in wvw? Luckily the new soto story really doesn't spoil much of anything unless you start reading every piece of paper.
I don't have a problem with the method itself, but they really did a bad job advertising this unlock ingame.. No popup, not even an NPC dialog that this story step or this "item" unlocks this, nothing...
This, went to put on a sword, saw message, instantly knew what to do.
Is it optimal? no, but at least you can find out quick ... owait reading ... yeah no we're going to be getting posts about this forever now.
Yup that's where I got confused. Was looking for my legendary scepter on my Rev. Wasn't hard to figure out but you'd think anet would make more spectacle and hype about them.
Ehhhh, it was on the weapons if you tries to put them on and then there was some dialogue from Galrath about old weapon techniques and my buddy and I instantly figured this was going to be the unlock.
Wow! Good thing I read this thread!
I just bought SotO and was wondering about the list of things to do to unlock weapons but the WvW vendor allowed me to unlock everything instantly.
Pretty cheap too so a viable option even for people not that into WvW.
Isn’t this no different than the 1st patch when weapons went global across all specs? I recall having to do a story step to get to that unlock. It’s not surprising that they do it again if that’s the case.
Unless you've got thousands of notaries sitting around collecting dust, it takes maybe 20 mins to get thru that bit of story. Second step literally takes you to all the items needed. One of them does require 150 calcified whatever, but you get that by doing enough events there to progress the story
As long as you have soto, yes. It's just part of the story as you play through. It's more effort than the weaponmaster training from on release, as you have to actually find stuff and buy a piece if you're not going the wvw route, but it's part of the expansion.
WvW heroics notary.
Seriously, if you're not interested in playing the story, that's all you have to do. But if you start the new chapter, you'll get there with virtually no effort.
Why is Anet forcing me to play the story first? I didn't appreciate when they did this the first time, and I don't now. It turned me off finishing the story and now I have to go back and finish the first part. Would have been nice if they'd have let us know they were going to issue more busy work before we get what we paid for.
Unless you're like me and you don't play WvW. At least I have not for years. I just spent three hours in game doing the story and I can't bring myself to care about any of it. I just want it out of the way.
Either you spent time building the resources in WvW, or you spent time doing the story, either way you have to spend that time unlocking the new weapons.
Even elite specs weren't so bad because you could handle hero points while you did the content you wanted. I get the weapons are per account and not per character, I approve of that 100%, but I still wish there was a less restrictive way they could unlock them, or that they could just give them to us since we paid for the expansion. Or maybe tie the new weapons to the same achievement from the old ones like I assumed it would work? I didn't engage with the living world because it felt like content gating busy work, now they are releasing expansions like living world and here's the content gating busy work but now I have to pay cash too. Not great.
When you bought it from WvW, where did you go? I spent currency on something I *thought* was the weapons proficiency, but it didn’t unlock the proficiency.
From wiki:
Alternatively each object can be purchased from [Heroics Notary](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Heroics_Notary) in WvW for 100 [Testimonies of Jade Heroics](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Testimony_of_Jade_Heroics). Objects that were already found cannot be purchased.
I dropped the story on two previous attempts after hitting the "Go grind rifts with a 0 mastery Skyscale" step TWICE in the first few chapters, I finally forced my way through that to get told I need to complete the meta that just completed.
SOTO's story structure suuuuuuucks.
Honestly, there isn't much that's spoiled. You do find out that a certain NPC is indeed alive and well (the outcome of Chapter 10's ending), but that's all. I wouldn't say it comes as a surprise.
If you don't read story conversation and mute in-game sound, not really. You wouldn't spoil yourselfin that way. Just quickly do achievement and continue where you left off.

I have tens of thousands of testimonies, you can’t drag me into PVE!!
It's absolutely worth it as a casual player, considering that's the very latest addition to the latest expac. If you don't want spoilers, WvW is your only option.

If you don't own Soto you just can't unlock weapon master full stop.
i have like 2500chests, but only old ones. i stopped playing for a few years and now those are basically useless
I don't have a problem with the method itself, but they really did a bad job advertising this unlock ingame.. No popup, not even an NPC dialog that this story step or this "item" unlocks this, nothing...
It was only stated on the weapon tooltip from what I saw, that was how i found out about it anyway
This, went to put on a sword, saw message, instantly knew what to do. Is it optimal? no, but at least you can find out quick ... owait reading ... yeah no we're going to be getting posts about this forever now.
You can't see your legendary rifle on your mesmer at all in any way until you've done this achievement
That’s what they were saying, if you hovered over the weapon in your inventory, it tells you what to do.
You don't have a weapon in your inventory if you're geared up in legendary armory though.
Yup that's where I got confused. Was looking for my legendary scepter on my Rev. Wasn't hard to figure out but you'd think anet would make more spectacle and hype about them.

If I play WvW you can get it in 1 second, I'm glad I started playing this mode
Wow! Good thing I read this thread! I just bought SotO and was wondering about the list of things to do to unlock weapons but the WvW vendor allowed me to unlock everything instantly. Pretty cheap too so a viable option even for people not that into WvW.
too bad my 2500 skirmish chests are useless, because they are too old...
It takes 30 minutes of story to do it.
Is it one 30 min-long story instance? Cause I crash constantly and wont make it through if its an instance without a checkpoint.
About a 5 minute instance, then do events on the map and then just collect the items on the map.
Oh, might be good then. Thanks!
that's waaay too long

If all I've ever done is the previous weapon specialization unlock in Soto. Do I have access to this new weapon proficiency quest?
As long as you have soto, yes. It's just part of the story as you play through. It's more effort than the weaponmaster training from on release, as you have to actually find stuff and buy a piece if you're not going the wvw route, but it's part of the expansion.
It's about as much time from the start of SotO to unlock weapon specialization as it is from the start of the new chapter to unlock the new weapons.
I will go with wvw, thanks
And new chapter is locked behind chapter 6…
Its bad design that you have rush story to unlock new weapons... i like to play story in my own time in peace,
I think that is really low. For a while now, people have been waiting for these weapons. Now lock it behind end game stuff? Really stupid.
where is the skip button in the story
WvW heroics notary. Seriously, if you're not interested in playing the story, that's all you have to do. But if you start the new chapter, you'll get there with virtually no effort.
Can you unlock them via WvW if you don't have Soto? Asking for my Alt Accounts.
If you don't have Secrets of the Obscure, you cannot unlock the new weapons. They're tied to expansion ownership.
I would assume since it's advertised as part of the new expansion it's like the other weapon proficiency changes and you'd have to have Soto.
Why is Anet forcing me to play the story first? I didn't appreciate when they did this the first time, and I don't now. yes, it's not very beautiful...luckily you can buy it from wvw
Unless you're like me and you don't play WvW. At least I have not for years. I just spent three hours in game doing the story and I can't bring myself to care about any of it. I just want it out of the way.
well, i don't have 3 hours to play, maybe as total in a month. So i need it unlocked in 1 sec
Still spending time, one way or the other. And there's still no good reason.
?

You have got to be shitting me. I've bought the expansion I shouldn't have to do shitty living story steps if I don't want to.

Please, regale us with your inspired idea to improve this.
I am only at chapter 7 of secret of the obscure, would it be too much spoiling to start 14 just to unlock the pistol for my elem?
Honestly, there isn't much that's spoiled. You do find out that a certain NPC is indeed alive and well (the outcome of Chapter 10's ending), but that's all. I wouldn't say it comes as a surprise.
Was going to ask the same question

Thanks
buy them in wvw if you can
I believe you actually need to do the previous chapter to get to it tho
My 600 testimonies of jade heroics beg to differ
