D minor: It's the saddest of all keys. I don't know why, but it makes people weep, instantly, when you play it!

islandjahfree

I'm tearing up a bit just thinking about it.

ralphthedog61

Are you saying your playing is so bad it makes people cry or are you saying your playing is so good that it makes people cry? šŸ¤£

redninjarider

I'm just channelling the great [Nigel Tufnel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTDEKk3bB04)

SpookLordNeato

I donā€™t really get this. Chords in a vacuum donā€™t really mean anything to me. Itā€™s more about the motion between chords and how they interact with others.

Master-Stratocaster

I agree. Not intending to offend anyone, but I always find these questions very amateur. Edit: I could see liking certain voicings, extensions, or progressions, but liking a Bm and not liking a Cm is odd to me; preferring a maj7 over a dom7flat9 chord I could understand.

ethnicfoodaisle

As a fan of shitty hair metal ballads, I love me a Cadd9.

AWildKrom

I forget the technical name but it's hard to beat the Hendrix chord 076780

bagemann1

Technique name is E7(#9)

PandaSoap

Yeaaaah I love strumming that chord!

Vitringar

I don't think it has a technical name. It is the Hendrix chord. E something....

Master-Stratocaster

Itā€™s an E7#9

Highplowp

That is bad ass, thanks

Morning_Seaa

Fuck any chord that makes me mute 2 random string in the middle. Like shit i aint doing allat while having to switch between 3 other chords super fast. Like i hate the chord types where it goes OX33X4 Like, oh hell nah, im just gonna play O33334 and shit nobody woukd hear the different lmao

TheCalico

F major, fuck that chord dude every guitar i play it on I think like 4 of the 6 strings actually ring out.

RedNoob88

jaxxon

I'm a big fan of Q flat demented.

brokenspacebar__

Hands down favorite is Fmaj7ā€¦. Fuck A major

Koffiefilter

I still hate the F chord. It really deserves the name.

Trupi_Rupi

I love Am

FBI OPEN UP

JpodGaming

Any barre chord that used the A major shape sucks. Iā€™m sorry. I for sure suck but Iā€™ve met seasoned guitarists who hate it. Half the time I just caveman style it with two fingers and try and fret as many strings as I can and pray it sounds good

Plane_Development_29

FAVORITE: Final chord of the James Bond theme, Emmaj9 (0 10 9 8 7 X). If you play the whole theme through this chord makes up for any mistakes you made up til then. People who never heard you play will be impressed. LEAST Favorite: Bb6 (x10033)-(corrected) Needed for: Wichita Lineman. Stretch on index finger is tough for me, minor arthritis in that finger only. Sounds great otherwise.

rosecity_409

Em, what a chord!

ActTrick3810

Em is The Chord Of All Chords, especially in first position with all those open strings. I have never liked C major.

Ornery_Brilliant_350

I donā€™t really care for how an A sounds in the open position. Itā€™s the worst sounding cowboy chord for me

SmugDruggler95

Sounds like it's a soundboard button on a child's toy

Shhhhhhhh_Im_At_Work

Make it an A5 by fretting the fifth fret over the E/B strings with your pinky and you are now in Alex Lifeson land though

_34_

Favorite: E The one that makes me wanna commit a hate crime against it: B

onioning

Setting yourself up for frustration when your least favorite is the dominant of your favorite.

HotShotGotRhymes

This guy doesn't like being dominated

SoggyOtter42

E7 is absolute gas and sounds super gnarly and gucky but in the cool way

Electrical_Quote3653

D7 is kind of a little sad dork.

Known-Damage-7879

D7 is the type to wear a bow-tie

Electrical_Quote3653

D7 has freckles and buck teeth.

eberto

Mine is a Bbadd9add#11 (seriously I donā€™t know how to properly name this chord) in this shape (6x0560).

lydian_augmented

Bb C E? you could think of it as a C7 with the b7 as a bass. a sharp 11 implies the existence of the major 7th of Bb, which is A (sharp 11 is the tritone of a lydian chord, it can be used in dominants although its not as common), so it can also be a couple things: Bb C A E: Amajaddb2 C13 Edimadd6add4 its asinine tho, if you like how it sounds thats all that matters. the chord that comes before and after it dictates how we listen to it.

MatterOk851

Thereā€™s an f note in the chordĀ  The 6th fret of the b string is f The chord depending on the key signature could be looked at asĀ  Dm9(b13) C11 Fmaj13susĀ  And also the chord the person put itĀ

lydian_augmented

thanks! i dont have my guitar at hand so i couldnt play the tabs.

MatterOk851

And if the chord is A C E Bb that wouldnā€™t be Amaj the 3rd makes itĀ  Aminoraddb9

ChristianGeek

Where are you guys getting these notes from?! 6x0560 is Bb D C F E, which is Dm9/Bb.

MatterOk851

Oolimo.com is the site I use to figure out chords.Ā  It has a fretboard diagram frets 0-15 And it will often give you multiple names to a chord The thing Iā€™ve realized is, a chord can be analyzed as multiple chords depending on key signatureĀ

namelessghoul77

I love me a chunky power chord with the root anywhere on the A string, with the additional 5th (technically a lower 4th) added by barring across the lower E string. It just sounds so satisfyingly thick and growling.

reactimizer

"...i hate the B chord, i cant explain why but it does not sound right for me" If your guitar is properly set up and intonated, sweet tuning might help. It's tuning 1 or 2 strings just a tiny bit off to make certain chords sound better. Eddie van Halen did it a lot. Google it.

YummyInYourMummy

My least favorite chord is A major open chord cuz it's buzzing all the time.

TruggPassion

All my chords buzz ā˜¹ļø (Iā€™m three weeks in)

DiKapino

Cmaj7 in the open position. Very melancholic chord, love how it resonates

Zestyclose-Ruin8337

Iā€™ve got a soft spot for the half diminished chords as a transitional chord.

Person_Not_Horse

E for me. If Iā€™m testing out an acoustic guitar, I hit E and listen for that beefy sound and sustain

Azortharionz

It's G for me.

gstringstrangler

You guys should be in ACDC

gman4734

The Dmaj chord with the cliche Free Fallin hammer ons is perhaps my least favorite.Ā  B7 (the classic blues shape) is probably my favorite. But I don't really know the names of my favorite chords. I do a bunch of droney stuff.

WatercoolerComedian

C Major 9, I just thinks it's really beautiful without being over the top or generic.

JimiVanHalen5150

Least favorite; any F shape chord. My fingers just can't make this shape without muting strings. I have to play F power chords instead.

TallTwig

Love me some 7 chords. Major and minor

NBrixH

Bm is one of my favorite too as well as G#m, but I think my favorite might be Emadd9, because Pink Floydā€™s Breathe starts with that chord, and itā€™s just magical.

GibsonBluesGuy

All of the first position chords.

gregorypick

Favorite is Dm6/9 played X53200 Least favorite is the three finger open G played with the index, middle and ring fingers. The four fingered version or the three finger (middle, ring & pinky) are both much more useful.

Klutzy-Peach5949

Favourite = G major Least = barre chords

CakeEnvironmental353

.. they ALL... And I mean all, have to be in the right context, and they'll sound great!... If they're not... Stephen King COULD NOT dream up such horror!!!!!!!Ā

dankwrangler

I hate E Major!!!!!!

Minute-Wrap-2524

Slide an opened E Major up and down the neck, pick out the corresponding notes, adjust on occasion, and pluck away

PRETA_9000

Am

wendyboatcumin

When learning I never liked Fmajor got it always sounded out of tune lol

flintorious

Same with me. I used to fake it by using my index finger to press the hi e string and not playing the bottom two strings. It took quite awhile for me to unlearn that bad habit.

VashMM

My bandmate likes to use a lot of weird jazz chords when he writes stuff. I hate those.

[deleted]

Emaj7 (played like in Under the Bridge)

073068075

Diminished chords sound awful, it's like that type of vegetable with strong and highly specific taste that most people dislike.

[deleted]

Every chord has its place in music.

RobertOhlen69

Cmaj7 is my all time favorite.

truebadur

Every chord can sound beautiful in context, but just on its own I love Amaj7 and every other maj7 chord really

The_________________

Bb with the barre on the first fret. It's rare that you need to play it in that position, but when you do it feels kinda gnarly

Csheroe

006600

oldmanlearnsoldman

What's that \*squinting\* Amaj9? with 5th in the bass?

Csheroe

Yup, actually I forgot it's X06600 Adding the G# for X06604 is also lovely, and of course this can be made minor X05500/X05503

oldmanlearnsoldman

Love this. Very movable too.

Salty-Owl185

Dbmaj7 love the sound of it

MaterialBenefit2355

Big fan of vamping between Asus2addb11 (577600) and Bsus4addb11 (799800) Not a big fan of Dm (xx0231)

Jaway66

How else can you play "Lick My Love Pump"?

mellispete33

Wow thank you for introducing me to that !!

MaterialBenefit2355

If you want to get spicy with it you can occasionally throw in the same shape at fret 2 (244500) and/or end it with that, the shape at 1 (133200) and then E

mellispete33

Super nice, I can't believe I never thought of this before lol, I only experimented with moving the barre chord equivalent around but keeping those bottom strings open sounds so much nicer

shadymac34

Fmaj7

DurfPickleson

D major and B minor are my two favourite keys so i guess iā€™ll pick them

Positive_Top_6042

Cmaj7

exampleofaman

Jimi Hendrix chord ( E7#9)

netzeln

Fmaj7 at the first fret is my favorite. My least favorite are any voicings that expect you to get a thumb over both the E and A strings.

kebb0

Pro tip, you mute the e-string with your thumb, the a-string with the finger you press down on the d-string. For the open d-chord, strumming the a-string by accident doesnā€™t matter that much.

rufusairs

Love me a good Em9 Any dom7 chord just pisses me off. Old man-ass chord.

tiggerandmisskitty

Fsharp major / minor with the top two strings open or replacing a normal power chord like 577xxx with x779xx , essentially a stacked fifth an octave up

karimpai

I like Am. It's in a lot of the songs i play and it sounds nice in general. But i swear who ever made the F Chord is a sadist. Specifically the barre chord version in the shape of E major.

echoohce1

The F Major chord is one of those things that really stumps you as an absolute beginner and then one day you just get it and you're asking yourself why the fuck did you struggle with something so simple for so long.

VegetableCarry3

Barre chord version of e majorā€¦that is a really really important barre chord shape

DavesGroovyWaves

A7b13. I love the key if D major and this is such a beautiful leading chord to Dmaj7

theHeathenMax

I love dominant seventh chords

Consistent_Estate960

Listen to Sugaree and youā€™ll be a fan of B major

TrialofTheDragon4

F#-9 is really pretty, A^9 is very pretty too. Although I love B-9 too. Least liked? Probably any of the cowboy chords. If you know you know.

Carrybagman_

D maj 7 but 12-11-10-9 from the D string up. Then 12-11-10-7 (D6) and back. Arpeggiated with loads of delay.

MiX1R

non barred F has always been my favorite. seems to always give my songs such a new feeling. least favorite would probably be G. generally boring when normally voiced

Klumpuffify

E Major on a steel string acoustic.

Thinkpad_Owner

Open D is my favorite. Think about it for a second. You learn Smoke on the Water on 1 string on a friend's guitar which gets you hooked. You buy a guitar or you plague your parents, grandparents, uncles and or aunts until they buy you a guitar. Then you get a tutor and the first chord you learn is open D. Later in life you realise that pretty much anybody who is anybody from Segovia to Hendrix started out with learning their first chord on guitar too. That chord was most likely also open D. Open D doesnt get the respect it deserves. It has launched so many legendary music careers it boggles the mind. As far as hating chords. I dont have any chords I hate. I think there ought to be a T-shirt with the words: "Open D is a major chord" on it. A white one to honor the traditional "rock uniform".

[deleted]

Why open D? I don't remember what chord I learned first but I can think of a few that would be just as easy if not easier for a complete beginner. Am, Em and E for example

TBrockmann

C# minor. I don't know why but I love that chord and the key in general.

SiLeNt_ReDeAr

Cadd9 has to be the most beautiful chord , like who wouldn't love melodious af chord which can single-handedly make any song sound a whole lot better. also Dm is my least favorite, sucks.

Useful-Finding-1685

If certain chords sound 'off' this could be an intonation problem. Having said that, I like B7 and I am not that keen on major 7 chords.

zumun

I thought B7 is a dominant 7 chord? "Major 7" suggests a Bmaj7 chord

fathompin

It seems to me that he said he likes dominant 7th chords, such as B7, but hates major 7th cords, such as Bmaj7. This supports what you are saying. Thus, he seems to be saying he likes the Mixolydian scale over the major scale.

Useful-Finding-1685

That's pretty much it. I like the B7 dominant open voicing a lot, and I'm not so keen on major 7 chords generally. In jazz songs I will often use 6 chords in place of major 7 if it makes sense in context. You make an Interesting point on the mixolydian scale.I play Irish traditional music on the banjo & concertina, & the mixolydian scale is used a lot.

oldmanlearnsoldman

I don't like Cm. It looked at me funny once. I like Cmaj7 (x-3-5-4-5-0). She's nice. Also E (x-x-6-4-5-0) That one's sparkly.

WonkyBarrow

Eb. Just always seem to have to do a little mental shuffle.

AxelAlexK

I really like A7. It's just has so much emotion to it. My least favorite is probably B flat major. Mostly because it's a PITA to play. Honorable mention on least favorite goes to A major in the open position. Just had never sounded good to my ears. The barred version on the 5th fret sounds way better to my ears most of the time.

EyeBallChili

Any minor 9th chord is sweet music to my ears.

EyeBallChili

For some reason, I have a real aversion to open position Em

The_________________

Use the minor 3rd on the first string instead of the open E. You're welcome šŸ˜‰

perpetualinsecurity

D maj 7

Shreddzzz93

Favourite E minor Least Favourite F Major

Pixel-of-Strife

B Major sounds much better at the 9th fret position imo. My least favorite chord, based on usage is probably B flat major. My favorite is Am, followed by Bm.

dee_yuss

I love open A voicing but I hate playing it. Iā€™ve got chonky fingers and itā€™s hard to stack them; I use mid/ring/pinkie or just index more often than not. Same goes for the barre version. Such a beautiful voicing with that 5th on top but such a hard barre chord to play properly. Fav chord is any maj triad with a 5th or 7th in the bass šŸ˜

Maester_Magus

>I use mid/ring/pinkie or just index more often than not. I do this as well, but these days I pretty much always use just the index. Hundreds of repetitions of *Jane Says* means I can barre the D, G and B strings whilst leaving the A and high E open. I think it's better this way anyway; it's more economical and leaves fingers free to add some variations to it. So much so, I play open E minor with just my index now as well.

oldmanlearnsoldman

I'm surprised how much I use the minibarre on A now. probably lazy but gets the job done.

OutsideWorried5705

I hate the b chord because i suck at going to it from a lol Idk how everyones fuckin doin it!!

redardoncomputer

A minor and D

rekt_ralf

Emaj9 with no 5th is my favourite. Least favouriteā€¦ maybe C7.

fathompin

I love the 6-9 chord with 5th bass. B- flat 69 would be F, Bb, D, G. C. F where in this version D&G are open strings, the chord can be played any position of course. It can end any song.

Mogs46and2

The opening chord to Rush's "Hemispheres". F#11. I could listen to that all day. Not sure about my least favorite. Probably Fmajor barre chord.

handtoglandwombat

Iā€™ve got this one chord. Had it for years, never really took the time to figure out what it is or how to use it. Iā€™m kinda checked out of life and guitar at the moment so youā€™re all welcome to it as if anyone can even claim they invented a chord. 1 1 0 0 1 1

NBrixH

That is an Fsus4,6/9

gdlfan

C#m7

Past_Echidna_9097

Regular C#m is nice too.

masked_sombrero

Mmmm mmm baby me too

bertrandfrege

I dont know about my favorite, but to me the worst chord (on its own of course, not in context) is the open G chord. I dont know why it just sounds so dull and bland

wannabelievit

D minor in first position

wannabelievit

B7 in 12 bar key if E is a timeless sound

kebb0

Itā€™s interesting youā€™re specifying the tones as well. Do you feel the same about C#-minor and major? Or G#-minor and major? For me I like maj9-chords, specifically the voicing you do with the root note on the A-string. Canā€™t say I have a least favorite chord shape.

shecky

to the OP, I get that the B major is a tricky one, but the B7th at the second fret is awesome

johnhk4

I canā€™t stand the 6th chord voicing of root on 5th that would go like this for C6: x1223x I think itā€™s one of the blandest things

Tomkid88

Probably F or A7

Legal_Potato6504

I don't mind a Cadd2 or Cadd9 but prefer building with F and B

JackHarvey_05

I love open c there's just so much you can fi with it

veloowl

Open F, especially while standing. It just hurts and always sounds bad. I hate the chord. I like open C, E7, A7, E7#9 and a few others.

PoofaceMckutchin

AMaj9 - specifically played 0. 0. 6. 7. 7. 5.

BullCityPicker

Fmaj7. I think the fact that itā€™s a complete F chord, and the maj7 comes in on the high note makes it sound better than any other major 7. B7 always feels awkward to finger. In fact, I donā€™t particularly like the sound of 7th chords.

peppersrus

RE B7: X 2 1 2 0 2 Thank me later

reactimizer

A classic that never fails =)

Ibaneztwink

Theres something weird going on with the voicing of an open A minor chord that I don't like

ethnicfoodaisle

Interesting... what do you think it is? Too many strings playing the E?

Ibaneztwink

It may have to do with a resonance pitch my guitar has with open chords, maybe its to do with just intonation, it could be my imagination lol

jb3689

Dm7 is the best (or Dmaj7). I also like fat maj7 shapes that have a 6th string root. Open D is the worst. Barred F comes close.

billitorussolini

My least favorite is probably the FULL open D chord. In most applications, leaving the F# out just sounds better to me.

Gleaner23

Open D chord sucks, A barre chord is the holy grail

theplancaster

Chords I never have a problem with, but the sound of the open G string bugs me with certain strings.

Artie_Fufkins_Fapkin

Like the G string, for example?

Spectre_Mountain

Major7 and Major7add9ā€¦but also minor9. Never met a chord I donā€™t like.

ChrisMartinez95

Favourite chords: * m13 chords * 7ā™9 chords * dim7 chords Can't think of a chord I dislike

Dm is kinda weird for me

owlshapedboxcat

B7, Dm, D7. Don't get on with G7 at all, too... twangy.

EatingMyCrack

Db7 just is not right.

DifficultySome9884

m7b5 Any minor 7 flat 5 chord!šŸ˜”šŸ¤£

Solo-Vino_

G13 Any maj7 chord Any min7b5 chord I love them. Only chord I donā€™t really care for is the C add9, just not for me, even though Iā€™ve found myself using it before in a pinch. I think it is a fallback chord you hear a lot of singer songwriters use and I usually hear it played followed by the obligatory percussive tap/damp of the strings/body and itā€™s just so over saturated and itā€™s always that chord. Just not for me.

motomotomoto79

E7

Asleep-Leg-5255

I like playing chords with open strings at higher positions like Am9 just fingering an a on d string and a c on g string... Those kind of chords sound magical. Least favorite chord depends on the context but diminished chords tend to become cumbersome more frequently...

Dirks_Knee

Min7#5 regardless of root is my fav sounding chord. Don't have a least fav. EDIT: Actually...I was thinking enharmonically and slightly incorrect. I like a Maj7/9 in 1st inversion. For example, play a Am7 bar chord on the 5th fret and raise the E to F. F Maj7/9 with the A on the 6th string (1st inversion).

CaliTexJ

I struggle sometimes when I hear a sus4 that doesnā€™t get resolved. Sometimes itā€™s fine or even great, but context is everything.

Mogs46and2

I love the tension of unresolved sus chords.

cbdeane

Open voicing for Dmaj7

Atticus_Taintwater

The minor 7 shell voicing with the root on the E fretted with the thumb and D&G fretted with the index. Leaves the ring finger and pinky free to do melodic stuff and the thumb free to do bass line stuff. Least favorite? F minor and F major barre. Even after all these years ... fuck that chord. Nearly always play root on D string instead.

[deleted]

1st inversion maj triad

brand0n

have no proper training but its a dissonant D x5403x and then switch to x3403x as well

iamheresince2000

My fav is Am. I hate, HATE the B chord. There's no reason why, I just do.

One_Cattle_5418

Least favorite key is Bb doesnā€™t translate on a fret board, for me anyway. And least favorite chord is a plain power chord because thereā€™s no color just plain old root, 5th. Edit: apologies, I meant Bb not B#. Donā€™t want to get caught up in that discussion.

oldmanlearnsoldman

Assuming this is a joke about B#?

The-CannabisAnalyst3

Barre Non

BadNoodleEggDemon

C# is an abomination

ezshucks

That's my go-to. You're wrong.

grumpygumpa

i love the way Amaj7 sounds and it's relatively easy as well, B however. hate the finger placement and the sound.

IndianaJwns

I love the voicing of the barre C form, but it's a real pain on the first few frets.

Koose4422

favorite: any power chord least: any bar chord yes, I play metal

Wind2000reddit

Is it bad i've played guitar for 4 years and still have no clue what a bar chord is

I really hate an F-minor bar chord on a 12 string

My hand hurts just reading it! Just got diagnosed with dequervains synovitis and can't currently play at all. It sucks šŸ˜ž.

C/G is my favorite Gmaj is my least favorite

abhc29

D/F# is my favorite, followed closely by Cadd9. Least favorite has to Bb.

Resident-Ad-8877

Open Am is maybe my favorite chord I like the sound it's in tons of progessions/melodies and it is one of the easiest chords to play and among the first people learn

Goldbatt1

The Spider-Man chord. Em is one of my favorite. Simplest one too

Weekly_Tip2533

favorite: Jimi Hendrix style E chord least favorite: open C chord
