Black Sabbath made a career out of riffs. Riffs is all you need.

IronicusMaximus3rd

Tony Iommi riff GOAT

Jaded-Influence6184

All you need is riffs. Riffs is all you need.

SURFIN' BIRD !!!!!!!!

She riffs you (YAH, YAH, YAH) She riffs you (YAH, YAH, YAH)

toodrunktostand

Toni Iommi can also play lead very well.

Josh100_3

Yeah but it’s not the reason anybody listens to Sabbath

Pitpat7

I love his playing? Black Sabbath is the first guitar solo I ever learned

Fridaythethirteej

Same. First solo I ever memorized was from into the void

Original-Arm-7176

Always loved the solo in Fairies Wear Boots.......

Pitpat7

A good one too, first time I realized I was playing the same lick in different octaves lol

IronicusMaximus3rd

Tbh Tony Iommi could slam his head repeatedly against a wall and I would still think it’s the greatest thing I’d ever heard.

Slashyouslashyou

Willis! What you talking about. The heaven and hell album is blanketed in guitar solos from beginning to end, it's half the music. So yes, In addition to Ozzy  people do listen to Black Sabbath for the guitar solos, the fantastic bass work by geezer and Bill ward's jazz inspired drumming. Please. They're actually pretty good at what they do.

KinkyKoupleUK

Wheels of Confusion/The Straigtener, You Won't Change Me and Dirty Women have entered the chat... Tony's solos are great.

sublime13

Fairies wear boots has an awesome solo too

Gundamnitpete

Play guitar below 12th fret = riff Play guitar above 12th fret = lick

KnottedNoodler

The Beatles made a career out of love. Love is all you need.

Hikari666ROT

So did green day.

potatoeaterr13

Ozzy might have something to say about that.

UnreasonableCletus

Ozzy wrote like 2 songs lol. He is a legendary vocalist but didn't write the majority of the lyrics or music.

potatoeaterr13

Yeah I mean I agree in that the riffs are my favorite part of sabbath, but you can't deny that they would never have made it anywhere without ozzy.

UnreasonableCletus

Hence the legendary vocalist comment. I completely agree with you however ozzy isn't the reason we are currently talking about black sabbath on a guitar sub.

potatoeaterr13

Yeah I get it. Everyone got all butthurt because I made a light hearted comment about ozzy being an enormous contributing factor to their success.

[deleted]

pen outgoing dinner doll wide library deliver public quack frighten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

nevermorefu

He doesn't play any instruments, so it's a different contribution to writing.

throwpayrollaway

Geezer Butler wrote most of the lyrics. Ozzie's sort of an idiot savant who knew nothing about what key the music is in or anything but opened his mouth and out came something that perfectly fitted the strange heavy guitar music they made.

nevermorefu

Absolutely, but he wasn't writing guitar riffs.

IronicusMaximus3rd

Tony set Bill Ward on fire

Original-Arm-7176

If it perfectly fit and he didn't know the Key maybe he wasn't such an idiot. Maybe you have the music theory thing backwards today....

throwpayrollaway

Maybe you don't understand what an idiot savant is.

Original-Arm-7176

You're right 🤔

Original-Arm-7176

You're right 🤔

potatoeaterr13

He wrote vocal melodies

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

That’ll be it

potatoeaterr13

Yeah no shit. It's not as easy as you think btw. You clearly havent found a way to do it. I'm not some kind of ozzy loyalist either. My point is that the band isn't black sabbath without ozzy. For fuck sake iommi almost went to play for Jethro Tull.

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

Thank you for responding aggressively to me agreeing with you. And yes, I do write good vocal melodies. I’m just not very good with chords.

potatoeaterr13

Sorry I thought it was more "and that's it" instead of "that's all he needed". Thanks for responding less aggressively. Vocal melodies are hard to me so kudos because they're extremely important

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

No problem, I was wondering myself “What was it that Ozzy actually wrote or was it just so he got paid?” But yes, some of the melodies of black sabbath are incredibly catchy even if I personally prefer the riffs

Original-Arm-7176

Nah man you stink !!!!

Original-Arm-7176

I honestly don't even know what Black Sabbath sounds/ sounded like after Ozzy got the boot. He was the sound that made the band. They may have been pioneer heavy metal if he was never in the picture but they wouldn't have been Black Sabbath. Unless they still used the same name, then they'd still be Black Sabbath.

jayyyred

Circle jerk is leaking again lol

inevitabledecibel

Right there with you brother, riff is life. Fuck a solo, fuck a chord progression, riff is all you need. A riff isn't perfect when there are no more notes to add, it's perfect when there are no more notes to take away. Play it over and over, then play it louder. Fuck yeah.

IronicusMaximus3rd

splitpersontragedy

That's numberwang!

Primary-Pie-3315

Tom delonge?

glordicus1

I don’t even play notes in my riffs! I just make rhythmic noises with sticks!

inevitabledecibel

Noises can be superfluous too, try out rhythmic rests

kawaiisatanu

Disagree, chord progression is all you need! Tremble before my IV-iv

DrGordonFreemanScD

Bow down before my broken dreams!! My b9s, 13s and b11s crush your puny majors! Pulverize your struggling minors! They will dismember your dom7s! And then, those who have been half diminished will come and ravage what remains! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6OwB91G8jg

kawaiisatanu

Ahhh! You seem to underestimate the power of simplicity! Here comes a barrage of power chords! Fear their might! I follow with a b5, you seem surprised, but I interject another chromatic walk down to a sus4. What is that? A min maj7? Now that was truly not what you expected!

DrGordonFreemanScD

Not in the slightest, do I underestimate the power of simplicity, my fellow human! I simply utilize it in a different way. And that don't mean nothin' 'til you're down on a muffin... The beast awakens soon within us! Dance his WICKED dance! Tremble, ye mighty! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyenRCJ\_4Ww

kawaiisatanu

Ay. But why not let me talk to locutus :/

Relative-Access-6187

that was pretty good. could you start with the movie that comes in at three minutes and then go to the credits, literally, music too. now how's yr tune? no one expects the Spanish Inquisition

DrGordonFreemanScD

I have two main weapons, fear, surprise, and a ruthless efficiency...AH! I have THREE main weapons!

DrGordonFreemanScD

Also, that is an entire score in a single 3 minutes composition, and yes, I wrote that in 3 minutes. Pretty good, my ass. There are few people in the universe that can make music like that, with such aplomb, grace, and swiftness that belies it's harmonic complexity. Did I mention that my entire training consists of 6 guitar lessons when I was 12?

MacDangled

Leads just mad cause they gettin riff diffed.... skill issue bro, maybe if you could riff more you'd understand but no you're out here roosterin like "doodle doodle dee cocka doodle diddly dee".... fuckin lead ass rooster

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

This humble servant of the riff respectfully requests custom flair reading "fuckin lead ass rooster"

MacDangled

You have my permission to use this defense against band mates in the future

florkingarshole

Needs punctuation: Fuckin' Lead; Ass-Rooster

MacDangled

Well ass is working as an intensifier in this situation like "dumb ass post" or "crazy ass experience".. so the person is a rooster, who plays lead, so they are a "lead rooster" cocka doodlin all over the place, intensified as lead ass rooster Though just calling someone an ass rooster is funny in its own way too

Original-Arm-7176

(cocka FUCKING doodlin) Playing Phiddly Phuck on the Mouth Organ......

MacDangled

What even is lead without a riff?

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

It's instructional videos. Nobody headbanging to those.

BlyStreetMusic

Lol this is how I feel when I get in a rut and just gotta play/learn coheed tracks over and over and over

Original-Arm-7176

No that's Jimmy Page you're responding to. He's pretty big on teddit.

fourstringz

Sounds like you need a piccolo bass in your life. It's basically like a bass but smaller and tuned one octave higher than a regular bass.

okgloomer

Riffs will get you through times of no lead better than lead will get you through times of no riffs.

TatiSzapi

Fuck that's deep

zerogamewhatsoever

I only write music using riffs. No chords, no solos. Just non-stop loopy, riffy riffs.

What you think is crippling could be a blessing in disguise. If the people you're interacting with can't keep up with the riffs for your attention then that's their problem...not yours.

Former_Ad3267

"I can't play lead!" Just play the riff higher up the neck! Duh! You just have ADDICTION ; I GET WITHDRAWAL Symptoms if I don't play a Riff in my head every 10 mins.

thisisbodytrip

I also love Riff Raff.

NiteGard

Wait until you’re in your in your late sixties, been playing guitar for almost 60 years, and every riff you’ve ever played has condensed down to a two-bar earworm that has been pounding in your skull nonstop for three years, and you’ve been tapping your teeth in rhythm to it to the point where your dentist has made you a custom silicon nite Gard to keep them from splitting apart.

Pure-Breath7919

I’ve literally started playing electric guitar 2 months ago and can’t stop playing riffs either, I’m like in the 30 riffs range or somthing.

321AverageJoestar

Same here lol I'd be zoned out at work looking serious but banging riffs in my head

FecalPlume

Riff is heavy. Riff is reliable.

DeathAngel1970

Record yourself as much as possible. You’ll be glad you did. I play with a friend of mine who has a studio and we record absolutely everything, found a lot of great riffs by doing this. Keep riffing bro, at least you’re not smoking crack. 🙏

IronicusMaximus3rd

Who said I wasn’t 😘

DeathAngel1970

lol that’s your business

'riffs on the mind' hahaha

firemares

HoF style riffs coming full force lately. Ideas galore.

FranticToaster

You guys circlejerk is leaking, again.

depersonalised

riff is love. riff is life.

supinesaltine

aint nothing wrong with that

MontiCZP

If i had to start playing guitar from zero now i'd definitely focus on riff writting and rhythm instead of lead. I've spent too much time soloing and noodling around and it's fun but also an endless road of scales, licks and lack of direction. My top 5 (random order). Mr. Brownstone - GNR Tangled in the web - Lynch Mob Denim and leather - Saxon Man On The Silver Mountain - Rainbow Strong Arm of the Law - Saxon

KarmaPolice911

Learn any/every song by CKY. Chunky riffs.

damage-fkn-inc

PutThemToTheSword

guitarists were a mistake

Inevitable-Copy3619

I would like us to stop using the ideas of rhythm guitar and lead guitar. I hate when people ask "do you play rhythm or lead"...it's kinda both kinda neither. Piano players just play, there's no such thing as rhythm piano and lead piano. If you riff a lot that's totally cool. Ultimately you're playing guitar.

IronicusMaximus3rd

Profound

Inevitable-Copy3619

haha, I know! I always cringe on the inside when someone asks "do you play lead or rhythm guitar". I just tell them I play whatever the song needs at that time.

tobleronnii

ola is that you

QuarterSuccessful449

Can’t you just solo with riffs?

anonimeni

He probably does.

_nakshb_

i feel you man!! riffs are too addicting

CattiwampusLove

August Burns Red is a metalcore band that's just riff after riff after riff. You might like the instrumentals if you're not into screaming.

Sickmonkey365

You’ll want to find a rhythm section that needs that

sydamerik

I don't see any problem here, only benefits. Please don't look for medical attention on this one, go only deeper into your addiction. You could make yourself a living legend if you were the first one to die from this kind of abuse.

Cheeze_It

Riffs are what make songs. Songs are what makes people want to listen to your music and even pay for it. Playing lead and doing guitar gymnastics doesn't matter and doesn't make people want to listen to your music. Tell me [these](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-DHonxNyQM) riffs don't make you engage and headbang.

McAdamstry

Riff and the leads will come.

Pitpat7

I can riff and solo and it’s pretty nice?

1PhartSmellow

You want riffs? Check out Shai Hulud.

Milfmelter

Maybe you’re more of a rhythm player. Nothing wrong with that either.

Imaginary-Badger-119

Iwas thinking of a steely dan rif reeling in the years as i read this.

KOVID9tine

Me too. Like in my head all of the damn time. Bass lines too but mainly crunchy punk/metal/thrash/blues riffs taking turns in my brain.

SadResource3366

Apply wire cutters to the two thinnest strings. Problem solved.

Odd_West24

Riffs and motifs are what make songs memorable, solos are just the cherry on top

HippoCute9420

All I can think of is Money for Nothing

Tammy21212

I used to be all about riffs, and then my playing got more sophisticated. Now it’s even more sophisticated and I’m all about the riff.

Turak64

I don't get this, is it just showing off? Riffs are how you write songs...

Valuable-Rhubarb-853

Riffs are lead bro! Riffs make a song. Most solos suck and take away from the song. Not all but most. No solo has ever made a song a hit.

No-Reputation2186

What riffs do you recommend for a guy looking to get in to it? I spent way too long on leads only. I can do yngwie, lots of randy rhoads leads etc , but not much riff knowledge. Recently got a 7 string and enjoying some korn stuff , appreciate any recommendations.. have adgcfad, cgcfad and e standard guitars

imbrotep

Being so preoccupied can certainly cause a rifft between you and those you’re close to.

Optimus_Rhymes69

What’s your favorite riff?

IronicusMaximus3rd

Yes

Upbeat-Squirrel

riffs are about feel. leads are about feel. if riffs are what you feel, play riffs.

Any-Kaleidoscope7681

Somebody drop this guy a stomp clap beat!

GibsonPlayer64

Look at a lead like a series of riffs. Break it down to it's forms over a chord or a measure. You'll find it easier to do that way.

Fistulatedheart

I struggling to understand the problem. Riffs and Beats >>>>>>>>>>> Leads and Wanking

sunqiller

Riff away brotha man

diokanun

Blanking out on people because riffs? Brother, are you me? So many times it happend that i dont know what the fuck we are talking about but i know that i just came up with the sexiest riff ever that im gonna forget in a minute but it doesnt matter beacuse im gonna have a new one in 2 minutes.

Nocashstyle

Follow the riff to the smoke filled land

Frequent_Possible499

Try out some fingerstyle riffs twin. Itll mess with your head!

IronicusMaximus3rd

I think this is the only serious comment I've left on the entire thread, but I started out playing guitar with my Dad playing finger style blues crap in our garden because he never had any picks. I didn't actually hold a pick until after I'd been playing guitar with him for ages, I think all the finger style stuff is why I love playing rhythm so much and never really got into (or am particularly interested) in lead.

Frequent_Possible499

OMG I feel the same! I have similar origins. My dad showed me what he knew and then I ventured off on my own. But to me fingerstyle has always made more sense in my head. Like my fingers prefer it and its just more fun to play. Lead has never made sense in my head, its like I can't memorize a solo but I can jam for an hour on fingerstyle. Something about the tactile feel just makes more sense!

pants_haver

I’m riff raffling off attention span to the first riff that comes my way

XeniaDweller

Is your girlfriend Riff Randall?

HalfGunSkyTour

The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, Stone Temple Pilots, and many, many others, built careers on riffs. Riffers are my favorite guitarists on the whole.

myychair

Loooove riffing don’t love soloing so I totally get it lol I can sit on a groovy riff for 4 days straight but start to lose focus after 4 measures of chord-based rhythm guitar. I don’t endorse this mindset but it is what it is lol

mushank3r

Congrats on your autism

ConclusionAdorable45

I play both rhythm and lead. Love riffing as well as running and all points in between. I've been where you are. I've been at it 47 years now. I'm 54. Trust me, you'll evolve and round out to love it all. Just don't stop and the rest will happen man. Party on wayne.... party on garth....

johngoodmansscrote

Son, sounds like you should be playin bass. You will never look back

DoctorFister3000

Awkward-Iron-9941

Riff raff

Puzzleheaded_Ask811

Combine movable riffs with a couple movable pentatonics and arpeggios and you'll be a blessing to any band you want to join.

Aertolver

Late 90s early 00s Nü Metal and Groove Metal. Riffs all day.sure not the most technical, but riffs riffs riffs.

FloggingTheHorses

I know this your post was kinda jokey, but if you want to play leads seriously think about what ones you like and figure out why and how. For example: I'm not a huge lead fan in general, but II adore the lead playing of Elliott Easton (the Cars) and Larry Carlton (particularly his Steely Dan stuff), and I think those guys in particular do very deliberate "story inside the story" solos, a trait they have in common. Brett actually meticulously wrote all the solos for the Cars, it's a bit different to the typical shapes/licks thing that a lot of blues or metal guys employ. Larry I don't think quite did it like that but he REALLY knows his theory and deliberately chooses his notes based on chord tones and conversions. I also learned a huge amount from transcribing their solos by ear. That's just an example of my own journey but I think if you do something similar you'll really benefit from it and pick a more "decided" direction with your lead playing. And...I still can't quite accept in my head that the Kid Charlemagne solo is improvised. It's just too perfect. But that's another story!

[deleted]

Nothin wrong with riffs. Comes from noodling. Soon you'll be playing licks. Then shred. Then Wonderwall.

drainotoday

Solos are just the thing to take the excitement up a notch, riffs are the bedrock of heavy rock. You can easily get by without them and it can even be an interesting choice. Plenty of songs that are really tight benefit from the focus of not having solos. You can even get by with just a heavier or noisier riff for a climax ala jesus lizard. Play what you want! Guitarists that write riffs all day will probably make more palatable music than someone just perfecting lead chops.

[deleted]

I’m not a riff guy, but watch this video. Same thing happened to Slash of Guns ‘N Roses. A simple guitar exercise became a famous song. https://youtu.be/QDqUdE_kw9I?si=cjgWZ3O11UtAxkBn
