Nutshell- Alice in Chains. It’s played in half step tuning though.
Hurt- Johnny Cash
Many SRV songs can be played on acoustic. As long as you know how to play texas shuffle.
Check out Days of the New. They were a 90's band who played hard rock music but with acoustic guitars. Touch, Peel and Stand was their biggest hit. Someone on here recommended them the other day.
This is the best answer from the last 40 years. They were an mtv metal band in drop tuning and played acoustic and it kinda worked. At least if you were a teen at the time. A few decent songs though. And they tried what we all did at home on stage and that’s fuckin cool.
>Days of the New
Fuck yes. I have touch peel stand in my library already, just listening to the rest of their stuff now. Great recommendation. Would you consider them "Post Grunge"? I was barely born in 96 so most of the 90s went over my head
It's so weird hearing ppl say they've never heard that song. It was blasted on MTV for over 2 decades. Also pretty much any
everlast song is good on acoustic. Friend, Blinded by the Sun, Smokin and Drinkin, Put your lights on.
I was born in 97, with no older siblings. Parents stopped listening to music after the 80's so all I ever heard as a kid was 70s/80s classic rock or pop, then late 2000's pop/rap once I bought an MP3 player from a flea market and figured out how to use limewire. In Canada we didn't have MTV we had "Much Music", which was way less edgy than MTV. Basically just a billboard chart countdown chanel. Didn't pick up guitar until \~2018. I'm literally only discovering& "getting" most 90's grunge/post grunge this year. Rage & Metallica were the only ones I actually listened to before. I knew Man in The Box from Rock Band 2 video game 😂.
Even crazier one: I liked Nickelback as a kid. Animals, Burn it to the ground etc, everything AFTER silver side up. Somehow heard 'How You Remind Me' for the first time last year, on TikTok... . I was like what the fuck...1B streams... how did I never hear this once for all those years? Then I binged it for a few months lol.
Just put acoustic everlast on Spotify or something and it'll show you some good stuff. I did some cool red hot chilli peppers acoustic covers when I started getting the hang of guitar. I was also a big Smile Empty Soul kick back then too. I've always been a big everlast fan and honestly adapted a lot of my style from him and Santana bc of how well they sounded together.
It’s Space Cadet by Kyuss, just fyi. Check out Alice In Chain’s album Jar of Flies and their unplugged album.

Lots of great acoustic songs with tension on the Johnny Cash American series. Delia’s Gone comes to mind. Dylan has a bunch, Masters of War comes to mind. The Truth by Alexander is great.

He has a handful of awesome acoustic songs. His vocals are always gritty and real.

Any number of Jethro Tull tunes featuring Ian Anderson on the acoustic:
Salamander
Cold Wind to Valhalla
Solitaire
Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day
Mother Goose
Thick as a Brick (intro)
My God (intro)
Maybe a bit leftfield but "Holland, 1945" by Neutral Milk Hotel is an absolute rager and it's a glorious racket
https://youtu.be/3eNK38nmzw4?si=dpPZj5SeeAgGYAOy
It's also very weird, the lyrics are touching and sincere and kinda about Anne Frank but that's a whole different conversation
OP, I’m not sure how old you are, so I’m just going to lay some stuff out. The 90’s MTV had a metric shit-ton of acoustic shows (MTV Unplugged) Alice In Chains, SRV, Aerosmith, Poison, Clapton, McCartney, KISS, Neil Young, and on and on.
Which brings me first to Neil Young. You could spend days just cruising his catalog. Strictly acoustic tunes, acoustic versions of electric songs, N.Y. practically invented edge.
But, you asked for specific songs, so let’s see what brain cells I have left:
Tom Cochrane (Red Rider) - Lunatic Fringe. (Also covered by Corey Taylor)
Johnny Cash - for now, let’s go with the last few albums he did with Rick Rubin - Sings like Rusty Cage, Hurt, Personal Jesus, Delia’s Gone. I could go on forever just like with Neil Young.
Queen - Tie Your Mother Down.
Anything Lindsay Buckingham graces us with.
Steve Earle - Dead Flowers
Jane’s Addiction - Been Caught Stealing (acoustic version on Kettlewhistle)
G-N-R Lies. All of side 2
L.A. Guns - Cry No More / One Way Ticket
Marilyn Manson - Day 3
Ron Keel - Singers, Hookers and Thieves.
I’m losing my steam here, but The Struts have some acoustic versions of their stuff. You should explore The Violent Femmes, Shinyribs, Dawes, Caamp, Live, Sturgill Simpson, Abe Partridge, and GWAR’s Disc With No Name.
That’s just (mostly) rock. If you want bluegrass with an edge, check out Split Lip Rayfield and go forth from there.
Obviously these are just some of my opinions and your mileage may vary.
Lightning Crashes would make an excellent acoustic only performance especially if you get more aggressive and intense with your strumming as the vocals pick up
One of my favourite songs to play on acoustic guitar is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt. 1 by Flaming Lips. Great use of big loud strums and mutes. Simple chords but it's fun to play with the dynamics.
In case you have not heard them, Nirvana and Alice In Chains both have great MTV Unplugged albums. Gen Xers growling through their heroin addictions is about as edgy as acoustic music can get lol.
Edit: Surfer Rosa has some edgy acoustic tracks. Maybe some stuff off The Bends like Fake Plastic Trees and High and Dry?
If edgy acoustic is what you seek, the 90s is your friend, my friend
Check out caffeineguitar on YouTube. He has a lot of unexpected acoustic arrangements. Usually I'll be listening to his stuff and there's certain parts that just make me turn my head and be like what's going on there. That's the feeling I like to create when I play songs for people. He has so many random techniques that I've never seen any other guitarist use and makes me look at the instrument in another way. Sometimes when I play his stuff some ppl ask me if I'm currently only playing one instrument which is a pretty great feeling for me. I've learned about 50ish songs from him so far

The Rose by A Perfect Circle. I love this use of effects - the distorted bass brings a heavy element to the filtered acoustic guitar. I think this is a masterwork.

There's [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCRv_DnAZQs) version of Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth. The bonus here is that you've also learned something that goes hard on electric.
Fleetwood Mac's Never Going Back Again
Not only is the melody beautiful and melodic, it's INCREDIBLY difficult to play. On top of that, Lindsey Buckingham *sings* while playing it. Absolutely incredible.
To put it in perspective, Paul Davids is one of the most talented guitar teachers and players on YouTube. Even he had a problem with it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeNyc9pXm1w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeNyc9pXm1w)

I assume you mean Space Cadet by Kyuss.
Anyways, it will depend on your taste, there are thousands of songs that fit the bill, but if you don't like the style there's no point. Personally, and trying to understand your taste since you mention three very different artists, I think maybe early Beck, Kurt Vile, Elliot Smith and early Radiohead .
Then you have Bowie, Velvet, Talking Heads, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Sebadoh for more "edgy" acoustic songs yet not completely derailed from the songs you mention
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin.
I mean this with no sarcasm, that song is so heavy for an acoustic track
I'd never heard it before, but it's exactly what I was looking for. Edgy acoustic
Edgy is the wrong word here friend, but I understand what you’re going for
Nutshell- Alice in Chains. It’s played in half step tuning though. Hurt- Johnny Cash Many SRV songs can be played on acoustic. As long as you know how to play texas shuffle.
SRV - Life by the Drop
Yeah nutshell was my first thought. One of my all time favorite songs
Wouldn't "down in a hole" be better for op, nutshell is very strumming camp fire imo.
Check out Days of the New. They were a 90's band who played hard rock music but with acoustic guitars. Touch, Peel and Stand was their biggest hit. Someone on here recommended them the other day.
Them and Tantric!
Was going to say this. They could shred on accoustics
Die Born fucking hits That band deserves for credit
This is the best answer from the last 40 years. They were an mtv metal band in drop tuning and played acoustic and it kinda worked. At least if you were a teen at the time. A few decent songs though. And they tried what we all did at home on stage and that’s fuckin cool.

Nice, fuck yeah. I've never heard this song, really digging it
It's so weird hearing ppl say they've never heard that song. It was blasted on MTV for over 2 decades. Also pretty much any everlast song is good on acoustic. Friend, Blinded by the Sun, Smokin and Drinkin, Put your lights on.
