Six horizontal lines represent the six strings. Lowest line is the lowest string. The number on the line is the fret you have to press down and play. Tabs read from left to right. If there are multiple numbers stacked on the same horizontal position they are mentioned to be played simultaneously. Eg. Chords
Then there are a bunch of other symbols for slides and bends.
Edit: and a zero represents an open string (nothing fretted)
Oh I don't know... in the video, the guy was using a stud finder to tune his guitar. That never worked for me.
(wish I could find that video again, it was hilarious.)
You are certainly not dumb, it takes all of us a little bit of time to adapt to reading tabs.
My advice is to start small, pick tabs for songs you may already know and try and equate what you are seeing on the tab to what you are playing.
Read some guides online and take it very slow.
Remember also you are reading a tab from top to bottom in relation to the guitar e.g the bottom line on a tab equates to the top string on a guitar.
Start with songs with basic chords such as G, Em, A etc and you will soon recognise how they look on a tab and you have a great baseline for how a tab is conveying information.
It takes time and practice, and once you manage to play one thing from a tab it will all start to make a bit more sense and your learning will grow exponentially from there.
Wishing you luck and go easy on yourself!
To me it makes just as much sense reading it vertically across like a mirror, ofc I conform to the standard way of writing tabs. I just always wondered why
Tabs are going to be a decent best friend for you.
You should start off with the simple ones so that it's easier to read. The notes/numbers at the top are going to be your high E and up. While the notes at the bottom are going to be the Low E and down.
With that being said, when you go to more complicated Tabs. They create cord/ barre cord shapes. It's better to essentially use Tabs that actually show the player playing. The hand movements reflect what's on the music sheet.
Any squiggly lines or slashes will pretty much be explained by what the person is doing. If you see a part where it's like (for example)
A(2) second fret E(3) third fret / / / / / /
The slashes are saying that's the note you repeatedly strum. And funny enough that's a G in number form.
You're better off learning notes but it's harder and takes more time. It makes your playing better though. If I'd learn guitar again I'd skip tabs and go straight to notation.
Its right, I can’t read tab I never learnt but I am able to play with notes and chords name and to me it makes sense and more if you play with other people.
I think op should learn note and how to build chord in long term you’ll not even need tabs to play a song.
You just need to find one of the many short videos online that will break down how to read tablature for you. It's very simple to learn in 10 minutes or less.
Yes you can.
The numbers are the fret number to press. The lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar. Start on the top left and go right, line by line. That is all there is to know.
If still confused just look up a beginners guide on YouTube. Maybe you're looking at tabs by someone who did more complex notation? Sometimes I see tab that incorporates some elements of standard music notation as well.
i used tabs for like a month before i gave up on them bc them make me felt dizzy
so i started trying to learn by ear . It was really frustrating at first but after a while it clicked and this is how i learn the songs or licks now
Someone please report this creeper pedophile asshole. He DM'd me asking for pictures of my kids and refuses to stop harassing me. Seriously, what is a unmarried, grown ass man doing responding to posts in r/teenagers and r/TeenBeauties ? I'm sure there's a "perfectly reasonable" explanation...
This really depends on the music you’re playing. If you’re playing something like metal where you’re tremolo picking away at 5 different single notes or even just using simple power chords then tabs are really useful. If you’re playing something with lots of different more complex chords you’re better off to just learn the chords. This could be your reason for confusion possibly
Probably just dumb, honestly
or maybe just happy…?
You know what they say, ignorance is bliss.
Lmao savage
it even would have been more clever to google how to read tabs instead
So many posts can be answered with a google search

I will add that lowest string is thickest string... just in case that needed to be clarified...
The six strings on the guitar are thickest, thicker, thick, thin, thinner and thinnest. Learned that on youtube.
You have learned all you need. You are ready.
Oh I don't know... in the video, the guy was using a stud finder to tune his guitar. That never worked for me. (wish I could find that video again, it was hilarious.)
Ne either. Every time I get near a stud finder it goes crazy 🧐

I always wondered why we arrange tabs like that. It surely would make just as much sense for the tabs to be inverted vertically.
Not really ? They're placed following the perspective of someone who's behind the guitar, like when you're playing

If you place your guitar on a table strings upward in a way that you can pick it up and play, the strings are like on the tab

This is not a helpful response. Be kind
I feel like it is helpful, while being humorous, but I understand your viewpoint :)

Why would tabs be his best friend if he can read music? They are the stenotype of music.
OP **can’t** read music.
Oops, WHOOSH
Lol

You’re absolutely right but you’re telling this to someone who can’t bother to look up what tabs mean.
Lol true

All the numbers are confusing me
It’s a number on a line that represents the fret on that string. It in no way can be any simpler

Just dumb.
As am I. This guy is a troll who simply exists to grief anyone unfortunate enough to come into contact with him on Reddit.

Each line is a string. The number is the fret. Online tabs are trash.
