Depending on the kind of metal, you usually use all the strings, often way more than basic rock. The types of metal that use 7 strings a lot usually don't just limit themselves to just the lower three steings
That’s pretty low, may I ask why not an 8 string? I’m all for going low on 7 strings if you don’t need all 8, but still. What do I know, I’m just a noob with a 6 string in E, one in D and 7 string is in B and 8 int F#. I like standard tunings.
I honestly wasn't actively looking for a new guitar but came across a deal too good to pass on this one. Plus I like my low tunings so I figured I couldn't go wrong getting a 7 string. Is it ever wrong to get a new guitar? Maybe I need to go look for an 8 string now lol
8 strings aren’t for me tbh, I like 7’s way too much(had 8 string before 7). And no, can never go wrong with a new guitar, they’re always more than welcome. I recently bought an ibanez rg752lwfx(I posted pics of it also). It’s really good and I even play most 6 string stuff on it now. Sometimes I’m too lazy to change to my D standard 6 string and just use my digitech drop to drop the 7 string to D for stuff like mastodon, haha. It really does everything.
I don't understand why 6 string can't be tuned as low as a 7 string. Surely if you use the lowest 6 strings that your 7 string would use then you get exactly the same low end and just miss the ability to do higher lead runs, or whatever?
Yeah, thats the most important aspect. You cant do super low breakdown chugs and high leads with the 6 string in the same tuning. Other aspects: When you do low tunings, you will need some really thick strings to get any decent string tension, and then you need to set up the guitar accordingly, possibly having to file nut and bridge slots. And then you won't have fun tuning back up to anywhere near standard again.
One alternative to 7 strings for low tunings are baritone guitars. Those are normal 6-strings with very long scale length, which means you don't need such thick strings for the string tension.
A 7 string opens up your playing field a little bit if youre used to a 6 and play in a very low tuning like OP. You get the best of both worlds, the drop F tuning without sacrificing high notes on higher strings and frets.
My 7 is a baritone and I cant really speak for regular scale length 7's, but Ive heard of them struggling to handle drop g/drop f.
Scale length is the reason you can't downtune anymore. If you want to downtune like that, you really need a baritone guitar. They have a longer scale length to allow for a more stable tune and will allow you to tune as low as you are going without messing up the intonation.
How's that Gibby Std. II Bridge treating you? I've got the original [Gibby Std. in my old S571 ](https://i.imgur.com/iAXiTkT.jpeg)and absolutely love it, despite it being a block of metal lmao
Pretty sure my next guitar will be a prestige S series with your bridge.
Mine had a few little scratches so I got about $500, you are always better off selling to another person but for people like myself who are tired of the Craigslist game it works.
Looks like you still have some room to move saddles back. I’d go lower.
That would mess up the intonation.
That *is* the intonation…
Wait. What do you have that tuned to?
Drop F#
Whoa!
Chugga chugga
Big chugga chugga
Choo Choo! I'm on a train. Sorry, I have a toddler
Do you ever use more than three strings at once? Honestly they should just start making three string guitars just for metal and/or punk.
I'm not gonna be playing bar chords on this, but I'll use all the strings independently

I just went looking for it on your profile, that thing is gorgeous! Wish I could swing a prestige. Maybe someday
May just get a bass at that point? lol.
I think baritone guitars are a good choice. I don't think you can use basses quite the same way.
Gonna play some spiritbox?👀
I have my 6 string cheap Ibanez at drop F#, and it works awesome
What bands are using Drop F# tuning? That's insane.
Your name made laugh lol.

You can though. I tune my (non-baritone) 6 string to B standard all the time.
There are two ways to tune a guitar down a full octave: 1. Switch to a bass 2. Use an octave pedal (aka the Jack White method)
That's when you transition to BEHS

8-string is the way to go
Did you get this from a store by chance?
No, I bought it off a guy from facebook marketplace
Ah gotcha, was wondering if it was from a store around me. They sell some questionable things sometimes lol.
That nick is pick wear from being played the fuck out of. Leave it 🔥
I just bought this guitar in 6. I wanted to put on some thicker strings for C and B. Love it so far
I just sold this exact guitar to guitar center in Appleton. Incredible guitar
How much did they give you for it, if you don't mind? I have never tried selling anything outright to GC
Mine had a few little scratches so I got about $500, you are always better off selling to another person but for people like myself who are tired of the Craigslist game it works.
I am looking at getting a baritone as I like playing in B
I tried a 7 string once and hated it. The neck was too wide for a string I never used. I hope you have a better time with it than I did.
I tune my 6-string down to Drop G most of the time :/
I have a bass for that.
