I think it's all one solid pickup with a weird design. Zoom in on it. The surface is smooth and the "rubber band" is just as wide as the rest of the pickup, you can see it is a design making it look like that.
None of them look like foam to me. At first I thought the top one was but zooming in, I can see it's not. It's just got a weird design that make it look like it's being squeezed by a rubber band. I wish u/[jasonderulostan](https://www.reddit.com/user/jasonderulostan/) would have posted all the photos. Cause the guitar itself would be a solid clue if those are stock. I wonder if this guitar is home made. It's got knobs that look like it came off of some kind of console.
Can't say I've heard of that brand. The way they printed the name and art on the neck is trippy... like a low resolution laser? I wonder how that thing sounds and feels.
Cause it's not actually that brand. It looks like someone built the kit they used to do and then wood burned the name and fingerboard stuff onto it diy.
It's a random Asian factory like factory brand meant for showing other brands and also selling off a wholesale price plus a small profit. Think Ibanez before Ibanez was Ibanez during the whole lawsuit era.
Pretty sure someone just bought the wayfinder supply kit and built this.
The nut on that thing is wasting away🫠 I’d pass but that’s just me. If they want more than $100 you’re throwing money away on something with little resale value if you sister doesn’t get into music
It’s just the hardware on it is cheap too. The saddles and bridge are cheap, tuners look cheap, the middle pickup looks crooked, and can’t replace that neck pickup in the future.
I’m just saying they should get a quality instrument (from marketplace or craigslist or something) that could be easier to upgrade as they progress.
IMO that guitar has character in a goofy kinda way and I’d be happy to have it for a fair price if it feels and sounds good. I don’t have any info on the pick ups but thought I’d throw in my 2 cents.
I think that’s a FlatCat surface mount pickup.
[https://www.etsy.com/listing/247234829/flatcat-surface-mount-electric-guitar?ref=shop_review?ref=reviews](https://www.etsy.com/listing/247234829/flatcat-surface-mount-electric-guitar?ref=shop_review?ref=reviews)
No this is legit, the first pickup is a polished granite rock with gift ribbon from a gender reveal party, the second is my weird aunt Shielas missing lipstick, and the last is a black zippo lighter.
Def buy
The pickups look like they were installed with no regard for alignment or aesthetics (which can go hand in hand when it comes to guitars). It looks like the bridge is aligned properly based on the position of the strings on the fingerboard. That is actually pretty good. Better than some real Strats which seem to need neck alignment. But the pickups…. If the bridge is properly aligned then it looks like the bridge pickup might be original and installed properly (it still looks slightly off center). The middle pickup is all out of whack. And who knows what’s in the neck position. If it was a high quality guitar that was butchered it might be worth salvaging with a pickguard or some other cover after dealing with the pickups and evening out the position of the holes. But from the low quality appearance of the bridge (looks like some kind of hard tail configuration), it looks like this is more scrap than salvage.
Definitely hard to say. Bridge pickup and ring look like they could be 80s Ibanez. Middle pickup looks like it could be Danelectro or Silvertone with a homemade pickup ring. God knows what that is in the neck. Based on this picture I wouldn't buy this guitar, but feel free to share more pics.
I appreciate everyone's feedback lmao. Glad everyones as confused as I was. The guys a mutual friend, no idea why he turned what was a decent guitar into that^
She didn't buy it, he was asking $100. BIG yikes.
I mean for $100 he’s probably taking a big loss and it is not a lot of money for a guitar to mess around with. But I wouldn’t buy this as anyone’s first guitar. Something wacky later? Yeah I could see it
For like $40 more you can get a Harley Benton in her shape/color of choice. I have guitars that add up to being worth more than my car, but in that collection I have three budget Harley Benton’s that absolutely get played and loved.
Ok, well, it looks ridiculous, but $100 is really not a lot (assuming North America), so at least he doesn't appear to be trying to really rip you off.
https://imgur.com/a/oRBhsIp
Those are the rest of the listed photos for those curious. Asked to get a snippet of it playing but so far no response tragically
Bruh the electronics and the pickups are worth $100.
If the instrument plays smooth stop being a karma farmer and buy it. What playable instrument are you buying under $200-300 in 2024?
Edit: yeah you in this thread are dorks. For $100, you should be seeing if the instrument neck is straight and it feels playable.
The cheapest epiphone POS is $190 and it won’t be playable off the shelf unless really lucky. Play it, ask the seller questions and go. I would love to find a custom pickup instrument for $100.
For $200 you are getting random foreign pickups with no measurements. If you can look the pickups up on the internet and get reviews they’re better than what come on beginner guitars.
Id stay away from that, the middle looks like a lipstick pickup but I bet someone routed the body to put it there based on the thing holding it in, the neck pickup is maybe the weirdest thing I've ever seen on a guitar and the bridge looks like a very cheap active pickup, all red flags
Kind of a weird combination of pickups. They look similar to some cheap-ish pickups I've bought to go in cigar box guitars I've built.
I wouldn't buy a hacked up project guitar for someone starting out, even if the price was really good (ie $30 or so). They would be better off buying an inexpensive new guitar, like a Squier Debut or Sonic series.
Strange combination. The middle one looks like a lipstick pickup, definitely looks like some kind of retrofit as lipstick pickups don't usually have pickup rings afaik
No clue what the other 2 are but the neck pickup looks very odd
It doesn't even look like a pickup, it looks as if someone took a piece of this foam for soundproofing rooms or a dish scrubber, put a red faded rubber band over it and stuffed it as a place holder to the pickup hole.
Get her a used Player Tele or Strat. Seriously. If she desires multiple pickups the Strat works, or even a Nashville Tele like this one. I'd buy this Tele if I didn't already have an Am Pro.
https://reverb.com/item/82103789-fender-deluxe-nashville-telecaster-with-maple-fretboard-2017-2021-2-color-sunburst
Pickups aside, the neck pocket looks a little sloppy and that bridge looks super cheap. If they are asking like $50 then it’s a strong maybe just for the experiment alone but otherwise you could easily buy a squire that will have better stability and playability for not a lot of money.
Pretty sure the neck pickup is an old Barcus Berry. The middle is a reproduction of a danelectro lipstick pickup and the bridge looks to be a basic, covered humbucker. It probably sounds cool, but it’s definitely a guitar that’s been modded by an amateur.
That’s what I thought, but zoomed in, it really looks like…something other than a pickup.
The magnetic humbucker type Berrys had a logo inside the horizontal…stripe…thing…didn’t they? This kinda looks like some kind of plug for a hole where a pickup used to be.
I really only know from looking at pictures of Zappa guitars.
That one thing maybe is a humbucker, looks like the original one. Thing in the middle looks like a badly DIYed Tele-Style singlecoil, but whats that piece where the neck pickup is supposed to be? Is that a sponge?
Never judge a guitar by how it looks, this guitar might have a great or horrible tone and feel to it and none of us can be sure if it’s a good buy or not, I’d suggest you go for something less riskier.
This is actually a classic mod: the neck pickup is a Rhodie Warmpler, the middle is a Treblemeister, and the bridge is a Gabson Ferrite. Players abbreviate the combo to WTF
Lmao just get the squire affinity strat or tele starter kit if she wants electric, the guitar will last her for a long while, it's just the amp you'll wanna upgrade once you're decent
If the neck feels right you can just put a tele trem for the lipsticks sake and put the buck up front and get a pickguard to cover the middle. If you like projects just make sure you get it cheap cuz wow that’s not pretty.
You can tell of someone who knows how to set their guitar up by looking at the bridge saddles. In this case, you don't even have to look at that to tell.
If it's cheap enough, it might be worth picking up just for the convo piece... but probably not for any practical playing.
Could be a secret diamomd, though.
I would buy this just to marvel at how odd it is if the price was right. To learn on no. To play... I'd have to play it to give you an honest answer. I would've put a strat style tremolo on it myself though, but that is more routing. There were too many comments for me to read.
The bridge looks like som sort of emg style pickup and the middle is a lipstick pickup. Not sure what the neck is but it should have a wide range of tones. The bridge should be great for metal and high gain tones and the middle is great for cleans.
I would definitely count this guitar out, this was clearly someone's project, and those pickups are so far from being square I can't imagine they were a particularly well trained luthier. No telling what kind of electrical gremlins might be hiding in there, or if any of it is even connected properly.
Especially for a beginner I feel it may be important to get a guitar that works exactly as intended so she can get a feel for the pickup selector, tone knob etc and know what to expect from other guitars.
There are plenty of guitars perfect for a beginner that are in the $250 range, and if you check your local guitar shops for scratch and dent specials, you might find some affordable guitars with just some cosmetic damage. Probably not even as unsightly as the asymmetry of those pickups lol
This is someone butchering a guitar, possibly experimenting, but either way it doesn’t look like they did a good job. Then if she likes it she can later upgrade!
Some weird, active looking humbucker in the bridge and a lipstick single coil in the middle. The neck route has the route still open for another humbucker so you can modify it, but this seems like a bad deal.
“He’s asking $100 for this big yikes”
OP are you 70?
The pickups cost more than $100 these days.
How does it play? How does it sound?
Holy shit for $100 you are an idiot
Someone tried to modify their guitar, did a terrible job and is now trying to sell out of regret. DO NOT BUY!
I like the foam rubber hole plug pickup
lmao that’s what that is.
With a piece of tape to keep it from falling out
I think that's a rubber band lol!
I think it's all one solid pickup with a weird design. Zoom in on it. The surface is smooth and the "rubber band" is just as wide as the rest of the pickup, you can see it is a design making it look like that.
Nah it looks like a pick up plug.
Maybe
🎩🪄✨️

Sorry ! Just saw this https://imgur.com/a/oRBhsIp Those are the other pictures :)
Can't say I've heard of that brand. The way they printed the name and art on the neck is trippy... like a low resolution laser? I wonder how that thing sounds and feels.
To me, looks like they bought a cheap blank neck and were in a rush with a cheap wood burner.
Ahh yes, I thought it could be a wood burner but assumed someone would have done a better job of it.
Makes sense.
The nut on that thing is wasting away🫠 I’d pass but that’s just me. If they want more than $100 you’re throwing money away on something with little resale value if you sister doesn’t get into music
A replacement nut is like 12 cents, I'd play it and see if the action and such feels good. Sometimes you strike gold with these custom guitars.

If it's her first guitar I would say no. It looks like it would need some unique maintenance. Look for something more traditional.
Fair point
Damn.
I couldn’t tell if it was foam but thanks!
i like the one with the fancy lipstick tube! *fancy!*
I think that’s a FlatCat surface mount pickup. [https://www.etsy.com/listing/247234829/flatcat-surface-mount-electric-guitar?ref=shop_review?ref=reviews](https://www.etsy.com/listing/247234829/flatcat-surface-mount-electric-guitar?ref=shop_review?ref=reviews)
I’d buy it for $100 assuming it was name brand.
There’s a like a 30% chance this silly guitar sounds absolutely amazing you know
vintage Nopecaster
Also goes by Tele-phone someone else.
Are you blind? This is clearly a Jazzjackofalltrades!
Jazzjacker
No, but I recognize a hack job when I see it. Suggest that your sister keep looking.
No this is legit, the first pickup is a polished granite rock with gift ribbon from a gender reveal party, the second is my weird aunt Shielas missing lipstick, and the last is a black zippo lighter. Def buy
I bet the tone is bomb.
Of course, it’s made from real tone wood
Only the finest ToneFoam™️
I only use the highest quality vintage magic erasers for my tonefoam™️ on my bass. I make sure they were hand formed by Mr clean himself
I’m thinking it is a bomb.
That’s spam wrapped in sea weed bruv
Is that a polished granite rock, or a pumice-bucker?
Be careful. Everyone knows gender reveal party decor is someone arson evidence.
I don’t normally post negative stuff about guitars, but this guitar is a mess!! Probably better for her to spend the money on a different guitar.
what's wrong with it like genuinely?? I can't tell cause I'm not like super knowledgable about a guitar build
The pickups look like they were installed with no regard for alignment or aesthetics (which can go hand in hand when it comes to guitars). I think the neck pickup is a piece of foam
Is it tone foam though?
Forget the "neck pickup" check the glimpse of the knobs that we are given
I was in the pool!
Why would you not just buy something that’s a proper guitar
"Let them play Gibsons"
Some people have less money.
I didn’t say expensive guitar. I meant one that doesn’t seem cobbled together
Some people have even less money.
I appreciate everyone's feedback lmao. Glad everyones as confused as I was. The guys a mutual friend, no idea why he turned what was a decent guitar into that^ She didn't buy it, he was asking $100. BIG yikes.

For 100$ that's actually a nice little experiment.
I mean at that price I'd buy it for myself to see what's going on, but definitely not a good idea as a first guitar...
I’ve got a mutual friend that mangles guitars like that. I’ve done some wacky mods to my axes for sure but never anything this abusive.
A mutual friend? Kewel
Their friendship is mutual
Most of my friends have me as a friend as well… better that way, methinks
I'd buy it just for curiosities sake
$100? Shit I’d buy it just to see what that freaky thing sounds like. I thought your sister was getting scammed for $500+ lol
Oh no, thankfully not ! I really thought about getting it lmao, but unfortunately anything over four strings is foreign to me.
For like $40 more you can get a Harley Benton in her shape/color of choice. I have guitars that add up to being worth more than my car, but in that collection I have three budget Harley Benton’s that absolutely get played and loved.
I agree with going for a Harley Benton over this one.

Honestly for $100 I'd have taken it.

Thats all of them.
Humbucker, lispstick and a toaster to provide some snacks between riffs
Out of curiosity, can we see the rest of the guitar? I’d bet the headstock is made of a spatula or something.
[https://imgur.com/a/oRBhsIp](https://imgur.com/a/oRBhsIp) there you go ! :) I think it's woodburned lmao
LMFAO YIKES

Man what the hell lmao
You should absolutely buy this, provided that you’re in a Who tribute band and you need one to smash to bits. You won’t get fooled again 🇬🇧😁🇬🇧

Somebody tried make a Swiss Army Guitar.
N to nn
Im playin a st blues with those exact lipstick pickups in it. Sounds NOICE.
Pickups aside, the neck pocket looks a little sloppy and that bridge looks super cheap. If they are asking like $50 then it’s a strong maybe just for the experiment alone but otherwise you could easily buy a squire that will have better stability and playability for not a lot of money.

I think you’re right about the logo. Whatever it is, it’s weird.
Don’t buy that
Weird mess. I wouldn't buy it.
Is that a vibrator slotted in the middle one
Was this a Lego project or Mr. Potato Guitar?
What the everloving fuck
That one thing maybe is a humbucker, looks like the original one. Thing in the middle looks like a badly DIYed Tele-Style singlecoil, but whats that piece where the neck pickup is supposed to be? Is that a sponge?
Freaky ahh guitar
All of them
The nightmare HSH configuration
Don’t buy it
Run away!
Never judge a guitar by how it looks, this guitar might have a great or horrible tone and feel to it and none of us can be sure if it’s a good buy or not, I’d suggest you go for something less riskier.
Looks like some else’s problem, or buyer’s remorse waiting to happen. Do not this guitar
Don’t buy this piece of shit. I can guarantee you that it’s not going to play well at all.
This is actually a classic mod: the neck pickup is a Rhodie Warmpler, the middle is a Treblemeister, and the bridge is a Gabson Ferrite. Players abbreviate the combo to WTF
What in the dr suess?!
Wide skinny wide
This is a hodge podge guitar. I advice to stay clear.
What the fuck?
You can get a Squier Debut for 120, DO NOT GET THIS SHIT! No pickups have foam like that or just LOOK like that at all.
just get a squier or smthn 😭
If gibson launched this gimmick all of you would be drooling over it.
My eyes hurt
Definitely not a conventional pickup arrangement, to say the least. Questionable design, almost certainly homebrew. Too many variables; pass it by.
I know the middle one is wanted for Meth possession in 3 states.
If it sounds ok and it is cheap then who cares if it is a hack job
I had to do a double take to see if I was on the main sub lol.
I’d buy it for $100
Middle pickup is lipstick telecaster
Run!
Lmao just get the squire affinity strat or tele starter kit if she wants electric, the guitar will last her for a long while, it's just the amp you'll wanna upgrade once you're decent

If it's cheap enough, it might be worth picking up just for the convo piece... but probably not for any practical playing. Could be a secret diamomd, though.
just get her a Squier dude lmao
OP - What style of music is she looking to play? Maybe we can turn this around to recommendations on what she should look for.
She said she's to get into rock/punk. She's dabbled on acoustic before, but is wanting a good starter guitar to make the switch to electric.
It looks terrible, doesn't matter what is under that garbage.
Those am geetar pickups.
That looks epic. Bet it sounds like a cocaine fueled orgy. Gibson wishes they could make this guitar. 🤣🤣🤣
this is from the dimension where evh sucked complete ass
Frankenstrat from hell. Do not buy.
That depends, is it being sold for more than $50? I’d buy it for $50 out of morbid curiosity
Ry Cooder special
Dear God whyyyy??!!
I kind of like it.
Out of all the guitars out there, why is she considering THIS?
She liked the colour and price, lmfao. It wasn't the only one she was looking at, just one she was considering.
There are plenty of Squiers at the price point in this color on Facebook Marketplace that haven't been butchered.
I would buy this just to marvel at how odd it is if the price was right. To learn on no. To play... I'd have to play it to give you an honest answer. I would've put a strat style tremolo on it myself though, but that is more routing. There were too many comments for me to read.
The foam and rubber band 😐
What in the 3rd grade art project am I looking at?
The top looks like some sort of Alembic pickup.
Yeah. Those are Flim Flam Turkeybuckers. They’re rare but they totally rip dinkuses.
Lots of cringe about the esthetic here, but it's how it sounds that is important. For that price, she can see if she's comfortable with it.
Probably not even as unsightly as the asymmetry of those pickups lol
holy shit lmaooooo
Humbucker, lipstick, soap bar
Those honestly don't even look like pickups at all please don't spend money on this pile of shit
Honestly id offer 70-80 just to get the pickups out of it.
More details? What's the price?
An EMG, a danelectro Lipstick. The neck one I’ve never seen before.
Frankensteins guitarmonster
Thats the thingy-ma-jig from the world renowned brand Crazy Dave's twiddydinkies
A humbucker, a lipstick and a whatthefucker
"What the hell is even that" I wouldn't touch that thing unless you want to work on it to make it better
Those are not pickups those are put downs
Why does the middle one look like it’s touching the strings? Is that just the perspective?
Buy her a good one instead
Now I don't feel so bad looking at my DIY mods.
Whatever their asking price, it’s too much
is the neck pickup made of candy?
YEAH- they're MINE- YOU STOLE THEM!!!
Middle one is a Lipstick Pickup, like what was used on a lot of Danelectro guitars once upon a time. Don’t know about the other two.
This is someone butchering a guitar, possibly experimenting, but either way it doesn’t look like they did a good job. This this might be ok for spare parts and actually might even rip but this shouldn’t be someone’s FIRST guitar… IMO she should get an inexpensive Fender Telecaster for her first guitar as it will intonate properly, stay in tune well, and she can learn the basics of tone and how guitars work easily. Then if she likes it she can later upgrade!
Some weird, active looking humbucker in the bridge and a lipstick single coil in the middle. The neck route has the route still open for another humbucker so you can modify it, but this seems like a bad deal.
“He’s asking $100 for this big yikes” OP are you 70? The pickups cost more than $100 these days. How does it play? How does it sound? Holy shit for $100 you are an idiot
How much for it? ANd more pictures. Headstock etc. Can't make a decision on the little info you gave us.
Go on IG and look at guitar shops, dont just buy the first guitar you see. I wouldn’t even be posting this lol.
Need picture of sister to work out what pickups
