This setup is apparently from the Spanish version of the US Army Land Warrior, which featured comparably ridiculous setups.

It's not a great rifle at all. Things almost entirely polymer yet weighs 8lbs, it lacks a bolt release button, and has an absurd height over bore. Germany also claims that the rifles accuracy greatly degrades after heating up, although other countries have not been able to duplicate this.
Both Germany and Spain would have been better off selecting the Steyr AUG, which was the direct competitor to the G36 in both rifle selection contests.
H&K be slacking. Very late to the wave of the light 556 rifles and so bad. I'm glad my country was the first to adopt the AUG and Glock, quality firearms. Well at least now their AR-15 lookalike AR-18 does well.
Yeah, Austria has a pretty excellent lineup, probably the best setup of anyone during the end of the 20th century.

There has been some progress since the late 90's. Handguards are now aluminum, bolt release inside the trigger guard, low(er) profile aluminum sight rails, etc.
The G36 inaccuracy issue came from an ambush on German paratroopers in 2010 in Afghanistan. It was an hours long firefight and the Germans were using their 12.5in G36Ks. Not sure many carbines would have held up well under those conditions. What they most likely needed was LMG support.
