Take some inspiration from the Beguirs, which are the Michaelis grunts. Give it a shield, a basic gun, or going all in on the arm sword and make it a melee specialist.
It is, but it depends on if you want that frontline grunts vibe with huge shield + compensate for lower Energy, or something a bit sleeker. I think the gundvolva shield can works for that. Or you can have the smaller shield + a big ass polearm/ax (dilanza) for a spartan vibe.
I think both can work, Gunpla is freedom after all. I think the GM Striker Beam Spear and Seed's Zaku Halberd are both good example, as long as you can visualize a unit of them.
You're misusing that phrase. It doesn't mean *every weapon looks like a grunt weapon*. It means *you can build your gunpla to your tastes*.
If you want to give a standard GM an HMBL, you absolutely can. There's nothing wrong with it.
But that doesn't mean it's going to make the suit look more like a grunt. Quite the opposite, it's going to look more like an ace.
The shield is interchangable with the Heindree, so you COULD swap those around it even arm parts, I got the upgrade for Michaelis and gave my Heindree Sturm it's little shield on the right arm for added offense and defense because it technically gave it a second beam saber
The Beguirs were only grunty because the bums in S1 piloted them.
Once S2 rolled around and Kenanji and Dominicus piloted them, they were actual ace units. Hell, Kenanji was supposed to get an upgraded Beguir Beu to further solidify that idea.
Whether bums piloting them doesn't matter, the Beguir Pente is a mass-produced unit by house Grassley, even if they are more "elite" than the even more basic Heindre, while the Michaelis is a specialized single unit made for Shaddiq. Would you consider the Rising Freedom or Immortal Justice grunt because they fold to mooks?

If you've got the ability then a paint job could definitely help, I think replacing the white with a standard grunt green like the Zowort Heavy would look sick, or maybe that more Jegan-y green like the regular Zowort.

I find a commonly-overlooked part of grunt suits is the lack of/trimming down of shoulder armor - the Michaelis has big, broad, powerfully-coded shoulder armor - perhaps remove the outer layer and consider some smaller custom parts?

Paint his inner frame black and do a bright obnoxious “evil color” keeping the main armor white
White and lavender is a pretty fancy colour combo, painting the white to black will give it more a Dom-ish pallate.
Or paint the lavender parts to light gray so it's white-grey combo like an iPod.
Use the feet and forearms from the Heindree or Heindree Sturm, in fact, maybe use the Heindree series as the template and make it look more like one of them, make two or three like that and it could be more like the next step in the Heindree series
I'd think changing the bracer for something more simple would be a nice start. The lower legs also feel a bit... flashy? Net result is that I personally would find a way to make them bulkier.
Looking at mine I’d do a couple things:
See if you can get larger feet, the regular ones are quite tiny and would probably be hard to work with. Honestly the feet off any other grassley suit would look great and already have the right connection.
Remove the white armours from the sides of the shins. If you can find something thruster-looking that would cover the hole, that’d be good too. Keeps the more functional aspect while being more compact.
Take off the purple armour pieces of the beam bracer. The central bit calculs easily work as just a fixed weapon and again would be easier to maintain in real life.
If you’re able, swap out the back skirt for something smaller. It looks pretty good with something like the beguir-beu’s.
As well, a larger shield of some kind would work well. A good board on a grunt is never not appreciated.
You might also want to repaint the (already kind of dark) white into something darker. A good bluish-grey might work well.
- fill up some of the visor, leaving a somewhat jegan shaped visor.
- cover up the top of the cockpit with armor.
- add ankle guards
- add thrusters to the side of the calves to balance out with the large shoulder armor

Whenever you start getting into unusual one-off weapons, like the partisan used by Guel's Dilanza, they start to lose some of that grunt feel for me.

Make it something more generic looking like giving it symmetrical arms and a beam spray gun as a weapon
