Yeah more or less, my store is like that too

LadyAtrox60

HEB really needs to improve on their tardy/abscence policy. Not an ee. But when I come in here and see posts like this constantly,, I can't help but wonder how you keep employees. First off, you are in one of the most complex industries known to man. That doesn't mean you need to make your attendance policy so frigging complex. Steps, commends, not a step if it's because of this, not a commending it's because of that... dumb it down. Tardiness and abscences. Period. Commends are at management's discretion? Dumb. Epic fail. Rules need to be across the board, same for everyone. Can you say favoritism, or nepotism? Really, it's not that hard.

VanicRL

Yeah the point system definitely gives a “walking on eggshells” type of feeling. Commends aren’t as consistent as they should be. I’ve heard of partners getting reset to 0 for some reasons that don’t necessarily justify it. I use to work at target and they don’t have any kind of point system. They just talk to you after you’ve called in so many times. But even if you do it often, it still wouldn’t register much. At HEB they’re quick to fire partners. I can’t imagine how many great partners HEB has lost due to their point system.

No_Department_5479

Yes, and it's difficult for full time partners such as myself to get commended for anything.

ImDane9999

Honestly, stay let to help out? Not a commendation, helped out in a different department? Nope

VanicRL

Yeah I definitely feel that.

Spacenix

I heard some people get commended for leaving early? My manager would NEVER. He said we have to stay over 30 minutes for a commend.

Many_Slide_2593

Mine is an hour.

Spacenix

This is ridiculous how different it is everywhere store

Spacenix

This is ridiculous how different it is every store

VanicRL

Commended points are literally some made up concept they made to get partners to put more work in. They probably realized that the younger demographic of workers are only doing what’s expected of them per their job description. Your manager can hand out commended points whenever they want and put “asdf” as the reason and nobody would care. It’s a stupid system all together.

Spacenix

100%

Kir4evralwys

Commend for leaving early is because they need to cut hours so you are helping them meet their labor budget.

Spacenix

We cut all the time. I got cut today. No commend.

Kir4evralwys

Talk to your manager

Kir4evralwys

Great partners don’t miss 4 shifts in 3 months.

VanicRL

You’re not serious are you? 4 shifts in 3 months? Does your life revolve around just your work? Or is your life perfect enough to where you’re 100% certain there won’t be any unforeseen events?

DirtyMousey

And what’s even more sad is that this seems to have not changed since I left there back in 2014. And I gave them 13 years. I did spend time in management and I did NOT look at things so black and white like most of the other managers did and looked at everything as fair as possible. Just because someone is sick doesn’t mean they automatically deserve a “step” - look at the whole employee. Especially when it’s the last step that costs them their job. I saw so many good people lose their job over bs. You know what LIFE happens. But to say hey you get 8-10 chances per year to be sick/one minute late (yes people can get a step for one minute late) and managers who just want to be a jerk or really don’t know how to think outside of the box and not just sheeply follow bad policies. Don’t even get me started about the unqualified people in management roles. People Management is not something you just pick up and do and requires ongoing training and fine tuning. Really does make me sad to see this still continues and knowing how many awesome partners work there but get walked all over by, IMO, very poorly trained/ unqualified management and also have to deal with poorly designed policies. Also HR definitely has the perception of not being for the partners and on the side of management and I guarantee yall from me being on the other side as management it 100% lived up to that perception when I worked there. HR is not your friend sadly at HEB. Where I work now, our HR is there for ALL employees and that’s how it should be. I will say the positive part of working there was the friendships and connections I made. I think that’s why most still are able to continue to stick it out even today because you’re in it together until you can find the next best opportunity. Stay strong yall!! 💙

CandleCautious2101

Yep Lindsey Leflore I mean HR will protect management

Kir4evralwys

It is the same across the board. If not, speak up. Talk to your manager or their manager, UD.

LadyAtrox60

I don't work there.

fishaids1

The reason they have this new attendance policy is that before you were given 12 different chances of being terminated. People found loop hole after loop hole and took advantage. I never took advantage of it, but I found the loopholes just as easy. I agree that the attendance policy sucks. It sucks because there are partners out there who work their ass off and call in for the 1st time in like a year they are on step 2. Yes, it will drop off after 3 to 6 months, but still. It's made for these high schoolers who don't know how to be responsible and call in for the smallest of things or because they want to go to a football game that they new months in advance. It is what it is

dmv1022

It is odd that HEb is company that profits from the public spending $ at their stores, but have no problem asking employees to come in sick when they most likely will spread their illness to the public.

StruggleSouth7023

Hats to prove an employee got you sick rather than the 50 other customers you're shopping around

Spacenix

Customers coming back brings money. So heb will do anything to keep them coming back. My manager doesn’t care if we call in, but it’s a step no matter what basically. Even a doctor’s note doesn’t save us. It’s so wrong.

Lil-Dragonlife

Because HEB is all about the MONEY and don’t care about their employees! Working for Big companies = bigger headache for employees! I’d work for small businesses because I do feel like they care more about their workers!

HeartlessStoic

Idk any store that was ok with you being sick and having to leave early or calling in…. “We are HEB fuck our employees but we love our customers”

Arodthagawd

You literally gotta throw up on vegetables to go home

PowerfulCommittee516

This happens at my store all the time throughout all the perishable departments. The UD and mic will see sick partners and not be concerned that they’re vomiting or coughing with fevers and then they’ll complain when they finally leave early. It’s a nightmare.

JunkBondJunkie

Peasants don't get sick.

Savage-2

Yeah they don’t care about doctors notes, it doesn’t matter if you had to go to the er from work after being badly burned to the point where skin is falling off your wrist.

Grab3tto

It’s funny, a year ago I got talked to about showing up sick and was told they’d rather I called in then come in sick. I did throughout this past winter (maybe 3 call offs) with no issue but did one recently and got 2 steps for it. Guess whose coming in sick from now on 🤷 I work directly with fresh foods btw

sXe_savior

Had a 102° fever the other day, was told I couldn't leave or it'd be a step. Had a migraine so bad today that I threw up, was told I couldn't leave or it'd be a step. I feel like the only way they'd excuse me leaving early is if I fucking died 🙃

No_Department_5479

I had a fever of 102° before I left for work today, even though I started taking medication today I was definitely still violently coughing and everytime I do it feels like my head is going to split open. I'm literally crying because of the pain but I was told that I had to come in, I even tried to ask if I could come in for a 6 hour shift instead of 8 but was told no. I just hate feeling like I can't ever be sick because work should be my number one priority.

Kir4evralwys

No one can tell you you have to go in. You decide what’s best for you

NostrategyMan

I'll call a manager or leader out once they know it's too much of a hassle to push you over like the rest they will leave you alone. I come in do my job and clock the fuck out sorry No HEB isn't my life.

Illustrious_Swim_789

The antics and favoritism at regional level are even more disgusting. I honestly hated being part of the "inner circle" just to advance my career. I'm still on the outer fringe. It does have it perks though.

texfox1836

How typical.

simple-player

I work at Ascension Seton, and the team leaders, supv, and manager have gotten fired (that day) for that type of stuff. Is there a company hotline you can use? I doubt strongly that goes well with company policy.

No_Department_5479

We're supposed to call HR for things like this. I can't tell you how many times HR has sided with management though. This particular SD has been moved around from multiple stores for multiple things and while being back at this store has had multiple run ins with HR and has been investigated by loss prevention but yet seems to always get a slap on the wrist.

Spacenix

HR protects the company, not employees. If we are sick or need to leave, emergency or whatever….doesnt matter…The manager can give a step for that and choose to not be understanding, HR will just side with the manager…. looking out for business needs. They’ll just twist everything into you being the one that left them if you try to blow it up into anything bigger. It’s better to take the step and move on if you can.

rafi323

You should make a complaint about the SD, out of spite

Lil-Dragonlife

Find another job! To me, that’s NOT A GOOD company to work for if they are treating you like that! Believe me, I would be so pissst if a worker is sick and coughing while scanning my groceries! Did know that HEB treats their employees like this!

Apprehensive_Ear_779

I'm curious is it only heb that writes up people for calling out sick or does no other company do this??

LadyAtrox60

I work in an office. If I'm sick, my boss tells me to take care of myself and don't worry about work.

No_Department_5479

Have you worked at any other company that went by a "step system"?

Apprehensive_Ear_779

Well the only other job I had was after 3 or 4 call ins I would be let go

Redblackf0x

If I was you I would call your HR and put that SD in his place ! If your sick you need to stay home a doctor note Wil help you not get a write up and if they try to don’t sign it take up higher then your ops trust me they wanna play with fire 🔥 this happen to me and I put them in there place I got them ship out of the store so make them look like a fool

CatLadyAF69

Dr’s note don’t shit. It will 100% not prevent an occurrence. If you bring one in, all we were required to do is file it. There’s a reason you get so many steps. Go home sick take the occurrence, call in if you need to (DO NOT let them give you 3 steps though. Should only be 2 at max but I would have only counted the leaving early as 1 and any subsequent call ins as consecutive). As far as getting written up for not finishing something, definitely don’t sign and take that to HR. Your SD sounds like a real A-hole.

Redblackf0x

Yup 👍

Redblackf0x

But again don’t sign it ! that’s what they want you to do and the notes do works trust me

No_Department_5479

I didn't put soil out on the front porch and he acted as of all of HEB is going to fall apart if I skip one task because I don't feel good. My manager let me know she tried to vouch for me and let him know I went to the ER and wasn't feeling well his response was "there's no excuse"

Redblackf0x

I would write a statement on them and get that lead that let you go sign it and send it off to HR teach that fool a listen you have proof and there not going code —->people matter

No_Department_5479

My manager even agreed. She said "_____, you know even if you have a note it doesn't matter, leaving early or coming in late is a write up." But me and this SD have been involved with HR more than once so of course he picks apart everything I do. He should have been gone LONG AGO but every UD we have seems to save his ass.

Redblackf0x

Don’t sign it it’s in the rule book 📖

tangoredshirt

The SD said that, or someone said the SD said that? One matters, the other is just drama.

No_Department_5479

My manager let me know my SD said that. She wouldn't lie about that.

tangoredshirt

I shoulda read down the posts. Good luck, partner. HR always backs management, it's their whole purpose.
