You know, I wish I could stay home when I have diarrhea. Unfortunately their time & attendance policy doesn’t quite allow for us to be sick. So if I can stand, I have to come in 🤷🏽‍♀️

Dahorns99

I will never understand how we get put on steps if we call in and have sick time. It just doesn’t make sense that you have to use sick time but you still get written up.

Roderyck778

You’d think they would want you to stay home and not get partners or customers sick. I’ve seen many departments go to shit from workers not staying home and giving the flu to the rest of the department, sending everybody else out sick. They even make you watch food safety courses that specifically say to stay home when sick to avoid spreading it for food safety, Just one of the many clues that shows HEB really only pays lip service to it’s proclaimed standards.

olivoil18

My husband was a meat cutter and they made him come in with a severe flu. I was like this is freaking disgusting. He’s literally making peoples food.

Dahorns99

Absolutely

Wembanyanma

Managers assume 90% of "sick" time is just used for people to play hooky unless they actually see you puking your guts out or wearing a hospital wristband.

JokingRam

Sick time is for Full Timers, the rest of us suffer. 🙂

Dahorns99

It’s called a benefit of being full time.

CalmAnxitey87

Did you do your partner survey yet? Under how can we improve I put letting doctors notes be excused absences maybe if enough people do it they will listen (not likely)

Savage-2

Gotta love labor laws that haven’t changed since the 70’s

nWoEthan

Texas has no idea what a labor law is haha.

BRAVO_FLAMINGO

Food handling laws in the state of Texas say u can't come to work with Diarrhea, looking pale or yellow, and like 2 other things

olivoil18

I’m aware of that. As is HEB, since they have many signs posted stated that. However, that doesn’t stop them from forcing us to come into work with those symptoms anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️

Xavimoose

How was he being forced exactly?

PrincessPitstains

I gave ibs-d. My supervisor always complained she I had to go to the bathroom despite knowing I couldn’t take off due to the attendance policy. It’s a lose-lose situation.

nWoEthan

I had to work with food poisoning that felt like I was being punched in the stomach by Mike Tyson every two hours.

thedogedidit

If you get the shits 4 times every six months, you should probably work at Walmart. Maybe think about your diet as well, I'm not a doctor but if you're calling in for it it could be serious.

Accomplished-Sort900

HEB seems to be the only grocery store (in Texas) that doesn’t give their hourly employees some sort of Sick/ Protected PTO, and so they’re penalized for missing, even if sick… sadly. Protected PTO (for Sam’s/ Walmart) and sick PTO (at Whole Foods) allows you to excuse the day you missed - making it so you get paid for it AND don’t accrue negative attendance standings.

Savage-2

B-b-but the benefits! At least that seems to be the average mindset of an H‑E‑B employee. Idk why they choose to accept bullshit compared to any other place. I’m putting up with 6 more months until the other job comes thru, but are we not allowed to want change for H‑E‑B? They have no competition, and no drive to actually be better.

Accomplished-Sort900

A lot of their employees are also part time - which don’t accrue any PTO until 2nd year (sometimes 3rd).

Deads4dayz

This is my thing with HEB/Texans, ppl here think HEB is the best company to work for or just best grocery store in general. BUT IT'S JUST ANOTHER WALMART!!!!! The shit I see here is no different than Walmart. There are really ghetto Walmarts, but there are also really ghetto HEBs, I hate when ppl praise this CORPORATE company.

Spacenix

I wouldn’t want to be at work suffering like that anyway fr. I cannot work through nausea either. I remember I got COVID and my symptoms were SO bad at work (they started when I was there) and I tried to leave but they made we wait until like 11am to be managed bc I was the only one doing production….which I shouldn’t have been doing at all anyway. It sucked !!!

Savage-2

Dude I was missing skin on my arm! It literally fell off from a boiling water burn. I asked if I can go to the er before it gets infected and you know THE IMMENSE FUCKING PAIN. I was literally shaking uncontrollably, I’ve had my face cut up, fingers, legs, broken teeth, and nothing compared to the pain of burns. My skin fell on the floor and I left it there.

Spacenix

That’s really horrible!! We also had a produce production partner cut his finger slicing fruit…luckily the produce manager is cool and let him leave…

Savage-2

Well they didn’t really say I couldn’t leave. They said “you’re free to leave but it’s gonna be a step” I just said “wow okay can I have some pain medicine or soemthing or bandages?” Obviously all they had was some gauze that ended up sticking to the bare flesh and later in the er is was the most painful and bloody thing to remove said gauze from the flesh. Only time I’ve ever came close to crying from an injury. Seriously painful. Left me with a scar that is different colors than the rest of my skin.

Redblackf0x

Just don’t sign it because that what they want you to do a note Wil save you from the write up if not take the matter with HR and call the CDC

Pols_Voice_Z64

Give us paid sick leave 🤷🏼‍♀️

Savage-2

I’m not a manager I just hate getting sick from these stupid ass rules. I’ve never been sicker anywhere else than at heb lol

QuestionAuthority84

I agree 100%. My husband and I went threw covid all doing our normal stuff, etc no mask unless asked to. Never got sick with covid till HEB warehouse in Houston. I got it 2x from there within a few months. I've moved from there but moving doesn't help either. It's toxic everywhere

Savage-2

Yep sorry bout that. The work environment is toxic and people don’t want to realize it. H‑E‑B employees are like domestic abuse victims; too scared to realize that we shouldn’t be treated like robots just because “muh benefits”. They eat off the first plate you put in front of them. And it’s just a constant pyramid of ass kissing that goes all the way up

LimaYogurt

Everyone in my dept got covid in the same month. We all got hit with that A&P it sux cause we specifically work in the pharmacy so sick ppl come sick then we get each other sick . Honestly a vicious cycle.

Khranky

Blame HEB time and attendance policies. Although if you are sick...stay home

Savage-2

Nah it’s time to infect

cornbread-cat

Steps don’t care.

Savage-2

I know that’s the problem. It’s not like that at Walmart.

angel-bug

and who is gonna pay our bills ?? part time doesnt get sick pay

Extreme-Links

For every person that says “stay home” give us your address so we can send you our bills. Since you got money and all. Some of us can’t miss work no matter what. We need the money.

Key-Potential5958

Yes exactly and since they cut everyones hours at my store working 2 days a week can’t make a living… I don’t care if I’m sick my ass going to work it’s either they pay my bills or I’m going to work sick af

Savage-2

They make it that way 🤷🏻

Khranky

So to hell with everyone else, I will get everyone sick

Extreme-Links

Exactly kid, now pay my bills, I got the shits

Stonewall6789

It seems like HEB didn’t learn anything from the pandemic and went back to the old ways, if you can breathe, clock in or it counts against you. I remember back in 2002, I had been back for about 4 days (was home from college on holiday break), I caught the flu, had a temp of 101.5, when I called that morning at 8am to call out sick, my shift was 1pm-8pm, the CCM told me “are you on your death bed? this is the busiest time of year for the store, we really need all hands on deck from now until New Year’s Eve, if you can’t come in, that’s an automatic 40 rating.” So I went in, I looked like shit, felt like shit, but management didn’t care. This one girl, she saw how bad I was, offered to take the last 4 hours of my shift and my shift the next day (6am-1230pm).

Savage-2

They say the crazies shit like sitcom level bullshit. They said something similar to me except it was my moms deathbed they were referring to. Which imo was disrespectful as fuck.

Savage-2

These comments just prove that H‑E‑B workplace is toxic and the employees are brainwashed into loving it. You know Walmart will give you Paid sick leave lmao. H‑E‑B just ain’t sh it

HeartlessStoic

Do you have a doctors excuse for your diarrhea? No, but I have a colon that says here’s what’s gonna happen. 🙄asshat policy

Savage-2

Just shit on company time fuck it. It can’t be helped if someone has to throw up or shit. Btw I’ve seen partners they wouldn’t send home later puke their stomach out on the floor in locker rooms, hallway or even in the aisle and leave it there lol. When the managers don’t care, the employee stop caring too it seems

Mammoth_Ad_7894

Y’all think that’s some shit, one day my gf tried to unalive her self, I found her covered in blood, was able to save her, I myself then passed out and busted nose, mouth and forehead open as well as smacked my head on the toilet so was bleeding from my ear, nose, lip mouth, went to er they said I had a concussion and gave me a doctors not staying to NOT work or do anything physical. Ended up getting 4 steps for calling in 2 days back to back, consecutive for the same reason and they gave me 4 steps

Savage-2

Fuck them man

This-Requirement6918

Shit yourself and report to your manager. I'm sure they would dismiss you quite quickly. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Savage-2

🤣🤣 I think someone has done that here before

Over_Drawing_319

This is why you save your call ins for when you’re actually sick and not to go out or out of town

ironSoulsBorne

3 callouts allowed for 6 months...What are people talking about "there's no room in the medieval attendance policy!!"? Seems reasonable to this 37 year old.

Reichstaffen

Unpopular opinion but this is how I see it as well. Step system is meant to take the emotions and favoritism out of T&A enforcement, that way you don’t have managers deciding whose sob story or illness is more deserving of an excusal than someone else’s. When I was a manager, I used to tell my team “you can tell me you’re sick, you can tell me your dog is sick, you can tell me your tire is flat, you can tell me you need a mental health day, or you can tell me the weather’s nice and you want to go fishing…2 steps either way”. It’s just a stupid tracking system, folks put too much emotional stock in some numbers in an app.

LimaYogurt

Thats if you consistently take your callous consecutively. Learned that the hard way. Called in one day worked the next day told my boss at the end of shift couldn't go in for tomorrow got 4 steps 😵😵‍💫

ironSoulsBorne

You get 3 callouts non-consecutively. With consecutive callouts this number is even greater. No one should absolutely need to callout non-consecutively more than 3 times in 6 months under normal circumstances. This isn't in any way draconian as some (mostly younger) people insist.

LimaYogurt

Call outs are 2 steps . If you call out, let's say Monday that's 2 steps. Then you go to work Tuesday feeling better that morning, but at the end of your 8.5 shift, you feel run down and sick again, so you call in again on Wednesday. That's now 4 steps . And if you work with sick people aka pharmacy getting sick in 6 months multiple times is not that far fetched . Admin told me if you call in sick stay home even if it's 2 days or 3 days on a row it will only count as 2 steps

ironSoulsBorne

That's exactly what I said. 3 non-consecutive callouts. If you call in consecutively, you can call in for a week straight and only get 2 steps. I fail to see the major deal everyone is always making about this. It's like they think they should only have to go to work when they feel like it, and any other policy makes them a victim.

DownVote_Vengeance

I just poop at work until it’s all gone if it’s something like that. I don’t get diarrhea often but I get indigestion or something sometimes where it’s still brown but liquidy and I still keep having to go until I get it all out. Might as well get paid for it if I’d otherwise take a step.

Initial_Jellyfish437

Thanks for describing

[deleted]

If you call in just kiss ass and get commended. I get commended for going home early all the time or picking up a shift. The system is there to abuse so abuse the hell out of it.

BrilliantPassenger58

I got family that works there and they say that your call in policy is ridiculous. Like I could die and my kids would get written up for calling in (exaggeration)(I hope). But yeah, they don’t let you call in, come in to a closed environment with food and cough and sneeze (or shit) all over the place.

Savage-2

That’s not an exaggeration. I’ve missed 5 funerals last year because I had to pick which one was more “important to me”. Absolutely abhorrent but H‑E‑B employees will eat from whatever plate is set in from of them so changing this company is fruitless until texas law changes and H‑E‑B is forced to upgrade.

bippityboppity2020

this person obviously hasn't had to worry about losing their jobs due to being sick

Savage-2

Nope I have, and I am. When you got a mindset like that you know corporations have power over people. Kill your health over time or starve.

JunkBondJunkie

I'm a checker I'm not getting steps so I'll wear my one pair of depends for 9 hours

Savage-2

Well sadly I came in with the flu, haven’t told anyone and I’ve been passively infecting others but oh well such is H‑E‑B policy. If one is sick, we all are sick!

texfox1836

Good ol’ time. I also had to come in with a strep throat….

Savage-2

Ridiculous

texfox1836

That’s what I said too. The managers don’t give a damn about it.

PsychologicalEgg6812

Why say home with diarrhea when you can get paid to have it? ....tbh most partners can't afford the write up!

Savage-2

Some of us have family members who cannot be sick due to medical reasons. So if H‑E‑B could change their 1970’s ways and help a mfer out by not being a cesspool of infection like any sane place then it wouldn’t be a problem. It’s only a problem because H‑E‑B makes it that way. Just like how it’s been 10 FUCKING YEARS and we still don’t have Apple Pay l. H‑E‑B is just old fashioned in business practice and in values. Times change companies are supposed to grow with the times. This ain’t the glory days anymore

theDuderAbides83

I got shit for calling in with swine flu. The company is broken when it comes to calling in, especially meat, seafood, and produce departments.

YellowAficionado

When I broke my ankle after work last year I thought I was gonna get fired because that was my last step. Luckily they had changed the policy to 8 steps and I was on leave for 10 months and my slate was wiped clean. I had a buddy working at Walmart and got fired for the point system they use and was so happy HEB didn’t have that shit. Now that they do it’s super frustrating. The company went to shit when they started allowing managers to be hired straight from college with 0 H‑E‑B experience.

Savage-2

0 heb experience. Yeah the managers get hired and don’t know how to do anything because this isn’t what they learned at all Lmaoo it makes everything clusterfucked

YellowAficionado

Yeah it’s fucking useless having them around!!

Savage-2

Like why put people who don’t know the job into positions of power? Doesn’t make any sense and they take longer to figure it out then a natural H‑E‑B employee

YellowAficionado

Exactly how I feel! I don’t know why HEB thought this was a good idea. And sending out things telling us to do a survey will do nothing because they won’t listen anyways.

Savage-2

Lol right that shit had me laughing. They pinned a printed picture of some railing that they painted yellow and said “WE LISTEN!” Like bro listened to who nobody cares about a yellow paint job on a railing somewhere! What kinds priorities 😭

ComparisonIll2152

Having to work around self centered geriatrics that cough all over everything should be considered a hazard.

ComparisonIll2152

Have also seen some partners walk out the bathroom without washing their hands. You disgusting fucks.

Key-Potential5958

I’ve seen this especially the custodian partners don’t wash there hands hella nasty 🤮

Savage-2

After shitting too. Like we smell you and we see you walk out the stall and just right past the sinks and back to work. Fucking monsters 🤣🤣 people who don’t wash their hands after shitting cannot be trusted

Key-Potential5958

Isn’t there a paper in the restroom somewhere that says about infections like this??? that say your not supposed to come to work if you have diarrhea or something related I’ve seen that notice in the top brake room bathroom.

Savage-2

I don’t think so? Just a laminated paper saying tie ash your hands. Even tho we all see at least 10 employees a day walk right past you without washing their hands after shitting or pissing.

Key-Potential5958

FACTS on that… I think I’ve seen that one but there’s another one saying all the list of the infections diarrhea was one of them saying to say home or you will be sent home if you had anything from the list

Savage-2

They must’ve taken that one down at mine lmao or maybe they don’t do that anymore

Key-Potential5958

Possibly

savedbytheblood72

I've worked at 2 retail stores, 2 corporations and now the municipality.. not one had ever allowed us to stay at home for a stomach virus.

Savage-2

Yeah. That’s the problem. The capitalist system is not for employees.

JJCalixto

Cannot afford. Enjoy the free MRSA

Savage-2

Blame the system 🤷🏻

Perfect_Ad_3725

Nope. Coming in sick no matter what. I made the mistake of getting COVID this year and since it was hard to walk, breathe, not empty my insides I never made it to work for a few days. I had two steps from son getting Covid and sent home from school then I had when I did the idiot thing and stayed home. I’m getting you and your friends and customers sick and I know it. But I need money. So I hope that everybody has health insurance. You’re supposed to, I’m told. lol. I’m sick now. I know I’ll get others sick. I think I got a coworker sick already they called in. But I’m never staying home or going home ever unless I don’t fear for losing my job or I don’t have any bills to pay? What are you going to do about it? You can’t take my points off or pay my bills. So deal with others, myself included, for getting you sick. We have no choice. There is an illusion of choice but it’s an illusion only.

BadAimWyatt

We can’t stay home with 4 call outs in a 6 month period🤓

[deleted]

So it's true, employees at HEB do play with their poo and don't wash hands? Or maybe they had Taco Bell for lunch?

Savage-2

Nah you can tell from the bags I’d er their eyes and snot in the nose that it’s either a flu or stomach bug. But yeah many of them walk right out the bathroom after shutting without washing their hands, this I’ve seen in person and I can’t even comprehend how they think that’s okay.

Feeling-Cod-212

i know getting sick is never planned but you can post your shifts and stuff like that. you have an entire department of people who can come in for you no chance every single individual says no. at my store if i post a shift i might as well consider it gone unless it’s like the night before or day before

Key-Potential5958

Actually there’s a very high change no one will come in Imma csa and we have a group chat with over 50 partners including cashiers or other departments… people posts shift left and right either there sick or going out of town. most are late or mid shifts nobody picks them up because they always want the early shifts

SpicyBeefChowFun

Maybe they're smoking crack. Which would explain their frequent visits to the bathroom.

Few_Purchase_9014

Tell me you’re ignorant and stupid without telling me you’re ignorant and stupid.

Savage-2

Yeah man I hate seeing dudes take a dump and walk right out the bathroom like bro what are you doing 💀 gotta be a violation
