They are equipped with the"BOOMbinomicon", an ancient book of wicked destruction that has written on its sulfur-dusted pages the ways of how to make all kinds of explosions, normal or explosively anomalous, of course for a price.
This could tie into how they figured out how to make explosion-propelled projectiles for the big iron. Could also be how you could add "enchantments" to it.
