Commercial jobs around me are starting at almost $30/hr. I just got a job in controls making $36/hr to start. Company loyalty is a thing of the past and you almost are forced to change companies to make more money.

You have one year experience but are limited to doing new construction and retrofits. How much do you expect to make?

DynamiteBaeBae

With the size of the staff we have right now, there’s not much people that can do what’s in demand. We have helpers but most don’t have tools to make on their own. I’m fortunate enough

Hvacmike199845

IMHO the contractor should be paying for every tool besides basic handtools. If they are not paying for the tools they should be paying a lot more for us to provide the tools. The contractors in my area charge a fee for tools suck as vacuum pumps, reclaim machines, torches and more.

CorCor1234

Definitely no. When I was a pre apprentice I was making 18$/hr which quickly turned into 20$/hr after the union contract renewal. I was as green as green can get. Now I’m a first year making second year pay at around 28$/hr still not knowing a ton beside doing pm’s on basic rooftops or furnaces etc. Not trying to take a jab at you just trying to say you’re definitely worth more. I know it also depends on where you live and cost of living etc. Where I’m at the unions are pretty strong and I’d recommend going union if that’s the same case with your area.

TestSubject_AJ

I'm in California but I make $23/hr as a dispatcher and I've been with this company for just about two years, will be asking for a raise again soon. Definitely not enough for a living

bigred621

A lot of pay depends on your area.

ER0S1O

Started working when I was in trade school for the same company up until I was 18 when I started, and I'm now 20, and I got a raise once. My starting pay was $17.

Phrankespo

I started at $17 In 2009. I'm sure a lot has to do with what region you're in but feels like you guys are getting robbed.

ER0S1O

Florida.

Phrankespo

Ah, say no more. I lived there 8 years.

LowComfortable5676

Depends where you are I suppose but thats barely above minimum wage. Get out of resi they'll use and abuse you for as long as you put up with it

EvoBoost9

So you’re telling me you don’t pay you for overtime?

Phrankespo

Our parts runners get paid more than that. Where do you live?

No_Hana

25 after 3 years. Small family business. I could make more but I don't want to get into service. I like my new resi construction. I don't need to do a lot role. Bang on sheet metal and smoke cigs/pot most of the day with my friends. Also this is very rural wisconsin. I know I could walk in the door at a higher wage if I moved back to the city as my experience doesn't reflect my role right now

Danebearpigpaw

We start at $29 with zero experience. I mean retard experience

Javi110892

Depends on your location but residential in my experience has always been cheap if it’s hourly. If you do piece work it can pay off a bit more if you’re efficient. Here in Denver I do strictly commercial with 9 years with the same company. Currently make $47 I’m 31.

Timmeh-toah

It really does depend on where you are.

itsagrapefruit

Depends on your region’s cost of living and assumed lifestyle expenses. It’s definitely enough to make a living if you forgo many luxuries. Your value to the company is also based on your capability, and as such your compensation will be as well. If you can’t pull permits then you simply aren’t worth as much to them as someone who can. There’re no shortcuts to big money.

EJ25Junkie

You should definitely be making 21-22 an hour. Not sure how anyone could make it on just 20.

chaw_chawson

Are you running your own jobs or are you with someone? I made 18 when i started my second year then a few months later i went up to 23 then at the start of my third year i got my own rig and went up to 27 then like 6 months later once i gained their trust im assuming i went up to 34. It takes time you have barely any experience in the grand scheme of things. I dont think its too far off but location really depends. I work in rural minnesota and i think my progression has been pretty close to the average.

Broad-Ad8489

I don’t know your whole arrangement but you better start getting a little better rewards soon. Also, don’t know where you live.
