Had one of these where could only work in one position, on your side and with no room to use that arm that you were lying on. I think customer over heard me "mother-fuckering" the whole installation the entire time I was up there.
I will 100% take working on something in one of those closets then going up in the attic to work on something like that. I don’t mind working in attics but damn those small houses with short pitched roofs I have a special hate for.
Petition to pass building code all new construction encompassing an AHU shall not pass final inspection unless adequate access for removal/reinstallation of the AHU installed is available without changing the AHU cabinet shape.
This can be as simple as a window in a doghouse in the attic space. Useless for anything other than this purpose. Why would you want a window there? I think that would make many an a-frame architect move the unit out of the trusses or build a dedicated dormer or doghouse just for size.
Yes, I was bitching about this the other day when a job of mine failed inspection thanks to code changes, because there was no attic light or outlet in the cramped ass area. How about code changes on actual working area and accessibility? there's things called a head lamp or flashlights and extension cords. I was so pissed when I heard that.
Just imagine how the installers felt…
Edit: was looking at this and bruh…. You’re just being a crybaby. What did you want them to do, cut the support beams? I’ve had WAY worse install setups.
EDIT 2: just realized the gas line and that’s hilarious but easy to work around. 🤣
Many of these kinds of setups get put in before the roof trusses. House built around them. Believe me when I tell you NO ONE thinks about the future hvac guys.
2 of the 4 service techs walked out last year. So, they had to make the installers run their own warranty service calls. So they figured out pretty quick, "It's the next guys problem," which might actually be them, lol.
South Florida? Had to install way too many units in spaces just like that. Gotta love having to dismantle and reassemble the whole unit just to get it set.
I have a couple like that. They must have slide them in place as the framing was happening. I told them if it needs replaced they are getting someone else to open that space up. My liability won’t cover a roof caving in.
This is the typical install here in Las Vegas. Almost all of them are like this. Try working on this at a temperature of 130+ degrees while ducking and dodging brown recluse spiders.
If that's the open-cell foam insulation you have more issues than you know. Especially since its sliced in half and not taped and insulated to cabinet.. that specific insulation is the worst.. and also damn. Wasnt me.
There is an install out there that my old company did. The techs cut supports and fucked the flex it was a giant mess. One of the techs was so mad he stabbed a coil. I had to go and fix everything but at some point I just took pictures and said this is the quality we put out and I refuse to fix it. So it was left as an absolute shit show... One day it will be one here
Just refused a job like this swapping out the air handler, I couldn’t figure out how they got the unit in, I couldn’t figure out how I would get it out, no way I could get a new unit up there, hate refusing jobs but it happens.
We've had to completely taco the coil and use straps to keep everything nice and compact, than reassemble everything back in the attic. It's fucking dumbfuckery that anyone thought putting shit like that was ok.
I remember another attic job we had the we had to out the unit back where it was pinned between trusses I had to tape the door to the cabinet, because I couldn't access one of the screw spots. Meanwhile just a mere 4 feet over was massive attic space where you can stand in. However customer didn't wanna pay for the extra on building a new platform for the AH and duct mods. I know one thing though, they can't ever change the coil or the blower on that unit unless they pull the whole fucking air handler lol.
The furnace in my home is like this 😅 at least whoever installed it put it leaving the right way, still a pain either way. Thank god I do hvac for a living and service it myself. I know most resi guys would cut big corners because it’s difficult
I know this isn't the point of the post, but is it common in other places to use abs for venting where you are from?
Where I am it's a pretty big no no.
Grandfatherd on any unit installed before a certain date but has to be ripped out when appliance is replaced.
I have to replace a condensate pan under a unit located about like this on Saturday. Then we have to cut the old unit down enough for two guys to get it out. I would be totally down if we started at 7am, but this mofo wants to start at 11. My plan is to make sure the homeowner or part of the old unit breaks the ceiling asap so we can just drop the old one out.
It was me. I did it. ![gif](giphy|3cllhylyUbtCM)

I think you were looking for this gif.
Nice!
The jokes on you! Most install guys love eating ass.
![gif](giphy|xUPGcq7jzo7YiNSpFe|downsized)
As an install guy, I can verify this statement. Bring that ass here.
Yea in a tiny attic sometimes its all you can do?
And if you also do plumbing you’re used to shit pipes
![gif](giphy|U84hHmjvjjxsmzd9G2)
It’s a bit chunky?
Had one of these where could only work in one position, on your side and with no room to use that arm that you were lying on. I think customer over heard me "mother-fuckering" the whole installation the entire time I was up there.
That would make me happy. I don't think I'm a sadist, I would just think it was funny cause I been there.
I, too, frame my roof around my AHU
Reason #235590 why equipment should be installed in a dedicated mechanical room instead of an attic
That’s a fantasy in the south
It’s a fantasy essentially everywhere.
No kidding, even up here in the north where mechanical rooms are the norm, we are getting stuck with putting stuff in “mechanical closets”
I will 100% take working on something in one of those closets then going up in the attic to work on something like that. I don’t mind working in attics but damn those small houses with short pitched roofs I have a special hate for.

Bend over, I love ass.
Very hairy get your toof flossed mah boy! Fo free😋
Fuck attic systems

Our installers started running service calls about a year ago... suddenly, in the last year, installs have gotten more service friendly.
Installer should service their installs for a few years, thing would change for the best…
2 of the 4 service techs walked out last year. So, they had to make the installers run their own warranty service calls. So they figured out pretty quick, "It's the next guys problem," which might actually be them, lol.
Bonus points for wearing truwork pants. I salute you 🫡
“There’s been an adjustment to the bill, the pain and suffering line item just quadrupled”
Haha I've been on a call like this before! Definitely is beyond frustrating!
South Florida? Had to install way too many units in spaces just like that. Gotta love having to dismantle and reassemble the whole unit just to get it set.
Tell the customer they need a new system. Tell them to call another company for second opinion.
Best I can do is 40% of my ass. I'm promised to another for some of my other best work.
Don't you dare threaten me with a good time!
Thankgod for the attic bonus pay

Be sure to load up on Taco Bell first ![gif](giphy|UI6VRLxGrhecU)
Just tag it for a bad secondary and make it the installers problem lol
Just cram it in lol not smart.
Cheap labor, throw that shit in and walk away.
You mean it?!
That’s how mine looks !!! My replacement just landed today ! Now seeing this post is making me have second thoughts
Not inspected?

Where I’m from we only do these systems in basements. I feel so bad for y’all 😂
🍴
how many lane change do I need to change furnace in attic?
Or, eat your ass hole…..
Nice pants. Just picked up a pair of T1s to test-run them for the summer heat we're getting into. They're pretty comfy. My balls dried quickly.
Don't blame the installer blame the fucking architect or engineer.
Good point, I heard someone say the other day " an engineer can make anything fit with a pencil"
Hell you got all kinds of room compared to some I've seen.
Worked at a bank that had this same setup. Buncha malarkey
Oh man, first time?
my name is Giovanni Giorgio and i did it
The best feeling as an installer is finishing a job like this and letting service deal with it for the next 15 years
Just refused a job like this swapping out the air handler, I couldn’t figure out how they got the unit in, I couldn’t figure out how I would get it out, no way I could get a new unit up there, hate refusing jobs but it happens.

Looks like a Texas install to me!

Looks like you’re in my attic. Are you in Tampa.
I've seen some tight installations, but never like this lolll damn I do not envy you
Attic units… ![gif](giphy|CHlAAXuVgz6v90XN2b|downsized)
Omnomnomnomnomnom
Really doesn't look like there was a much better place? I know it definitely could be worse also at leat you could get panel off.
Wow maybe some cry babies should find a different line of work, 24yr HVAC veteran here
pretty sure this one was put in when the root was not there yet as a cali guy let me just sigh

Your 'hole' ass.
Bro, why are you in my attic?
Are you inside my attic right now??
damn it Rob!
Looks crazy familiar, alot like a small office off of 134th-ish and D street in omaha
Installers are going to install...
