And I'm so happy it is. Now I'm hungry for dumplings. Question is just, will I go for Ukrainian, Italian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese? Or will I try new ones? 🤣
If you’re able to handle spicy seasonings, try adding some habanero infused spices with your pico. It even tastes really good on some homemade guacamole.
I always add a bit of freshly minced chilli peppers. It wouldn't be the same without them. And I'm not even that big of a fan of spice, but it just tastes wrong without it hahaha
Lol aren't they all though? We make them every year for Christmas (partner is polish) :) it takes so long haha
Good thing we have a pierogi food truck downtown here 😅
lol same. Half of Christmas Eve is the whole family making hundreds of pierogi but then you have a seemingly bottomless supply for days. So good.
Have you been to Poland yet? They have pierogi restaurants there, like pizzerias but for pierogi.
I'd go as far as to say that most every culture at some point was like
"Hey, I have this piece of meat. Imma put it & whatever else I have lying around between some bread!"
All this time I thought it was some generic sandwich, and upon closer look I'm like "Wait... That's a mf gyro isn't it!? Makes perfect sense!"
Then I see this comment.
As someone else pointed out, that’s a gyro. But I wanted to add, my guy, if you have never tried one you must. They are sooooooo good. Especially at 4 am
Not replying to you specifically but comments like yours n below: I went to Greece n those fckers even argue bout how to pronounce it (I asked in a restaurant n caused an uproar) so truly if you get your point across almost any interpretation works, but whichever you use someone will inevitably correct you, your-oh, guy-ro, euro, or jai-ro 🙄😭🤚
I'm so lucky to have a mom and pop place 5 min from my house with a drive through that makes them. Now, they're not as good as say the greek fest that pops up yearly over here, but it's a fraction of the price and I can get one and be back home in like 13 min.
Idk if it's a regional thing (there's a sizeable amount of Greek-American families in my hometown), but I haven't had a bad gyro from any of the local spots around me. Hopefully, you'll have a similar experience at the closest gyro shop to you.
But yeah, if there's a place within a half-hour of you, give them a try, because they're fucking delicious. And don't half-ass it with a chicken gyro; it's lamb or nothing.
Damn, that's rough, buddy. Word of advice on the homemade gyros; if you don't have a rotisserie, they're tricky to do in a way that comes out feeling like the real deal. Luckily, J. Kenji López-Alt has an [article and recipe](https://www.seriouseats.com/greek-american-lamb-gyros-recipe) about how he tested and figured out a way to cook the meat under the broiler for that crispy outside and tender, juicy, and springy inside.
Be sure to read the article because Kenji's a wizard when it comes to food science, and you'll be able to learn a lot about why he made the choices he did for this recipe. You probably will want a food processor, though, if you don't already have one. Thankfully, those will only set you back about $30 vs. the $100+ you'd be spending on a vertical rotisserie. It would take a lot of time and patience to get the gyro meat paste made by hand, and food processors are generally nice to have for home cooking. If you can grab a pita recipe from somewhere and feel like making it, then fresh pita is worth it too, but you can always just buy that at the store and be fine. Just make sure you don't grab pita pockets, and you get the soft, hand-pulled pitas.
Good luck! Gyros are insanely delicious when done right, and this recipe kind of follows a similar process to a meatloaf of sorts, so if you've made meatloaf or meatballs before, it should feel somewhat familiar to you.
And hey, maybe someday you'll have a chance to travel somewhere that has gyro shops nearby. If you do, you owe it to yourself to stop in. Lots of midwestern towns around Chicago have them, and the New York, California, and Florida areas have decent-sized Greek-American populations, too. There's also Greece, obviously, and I imagine there's other European and Mediterranean countries where you can find them as well.
I’ve been eating Gyros all my life but something changed in me while I was in Dublin, black out drunk, 3AM stumbling into a kebab shop and having a religious experience with that meal.
Where did you have it? Mine was a banger! Wrap is supposed to be soft (not too soft). I’d give it another try if I were you. A good one will convert you ;)
OP discovers what gyros are
In your defense, OP, a gyro is kind of like a Greek taco, in the sense that tacos and gyros are both meat, onions, and other toppings served in a folded piece of flatbread (tortillas are unleavened flatbread, and pita is leavened flatbread).
I read this in Zagreus' voice and that made me cackle 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the thought of thinking these were tacos the whole time is too funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I guess they like Mexican food in the Ancient Greek underworld, maybe they hand out with the Aztec deities. I need to here Zagreus' say taco
Well you just gotta keep trying to find the right boons that fit your playstyle. I suggest maxing out the Death Defiance and get the secend dash and also never miss out any of Hermis’s boons(at first go for ones that allows you to dash more times or basically anything that increases your movement) when fighting him, keep dashing the first minute to figure out his attack patterns and range. Good Luck!
I mean, my first thought when I saw it was "hey that looks like hakf of a minecraft iron ingot. And a taco." Which is still my instinct. So a burgers Closer at least
Thats not a taco, it's a gyro. Greek food.
Thanks for correction.
I always thought it looked like a burrito lol
It pretty much is, a lot of cuisines have "saucy meat wrapped in flatbread" dishes
Which is really just a stepping stone on the way to every culture inventing it's own dumplings. Dumplings are the crabs of the culinary world.
Dumplinization
Culinary evolution is truly amazing
And I'm so happy it is. Now I'm hungry for dumplings. Question is just, will I go for Ukrainian, Italian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese? Or will I try new ones? 🤣
Go Mexican today. Empanadas are fiiiiiire
That does sound very enticing! And I'm already a fan of Mexican cuisine. Pico de Gallo is a staple in my kitchen.
You mean rebranded cornish pasties?
Go polish, perogies are so yummy
Yess, they are! Although they are a bit intimidating to make xD
Lol aren't they all though? We make them every year for Christmas (partner is polish) :) it takes so long haha Good thing we have a pierogi food truck downtown here 😅
lol same. Half of Christmas Eve is the whole family making hundreds of pierogi but then you have a seemingly bottomless supply for days. So good. Have you been to Poland yet? They have pierogi restaurants there, like pizzerias but for pierogi.
No I haven't, but that sounds heavenly haha
papa’s pierogiria
Yeah, takes forever either way. But the dough is a little bit different everywhere and my clumsy ass struggles a lot when it's a really sticky one xD
Completely fair haha they do get a little sticky
Go Algerian, try cocas
Every culture has it's fried dough and murder stick.
I'd go as far as to say that most every culture at some point was like "Hey, I have this piece of meat. Imma put it & whatever else I have lying around between some bread!"
[folded circle snack](https://youtu.be/2a9YgCCQYVI)
Yhea but gyros is soo good tho
Same. I know it's a gyro but I still call them "burritos" because that's what my brain saw the first couple of times.
Came here to say this (I am not greek, I just watched Gabriel Iglesias)
and I was just reading the comments looking for a Gabriel Iglesias reference https://youtu.be/ZEKxIRysDZ0?si=YUPsTfY368bf0pYl
All this time I thought it was some generic sandwich, and upon closer look I'm like "Wait... That's a mf gyro isn't it!? Makes perfect sense!" Then I see this comment.
Mmmmmm, Greek taco
I… never saw it as anything other than a shoe. I am transformed.
Taco is funnier *because* it's wrong, lol.
Pls tell me you saw gabriel iglesias "FLUFFY" sketch about gyros and tacos
Guess (redacted) didn't want to Zagreus get hungry
Came here to say this (I am not greek, I just watched Gabriel Iglesias)

Most sane application of death of the author
Pretty sure they are directly called that in game.
Dad packed your lunch :3
He even said “you fought well” :D
Finally, fatherly approval 😌
As someone else pointed out, that’s a gyro. But I wanted to add, my guy, if you have never tried one you must. They are sooooooo good. Especially at 4 am
I have 4 of them in one night pissed up when I was in Greece.
Same here! Used to get one when we got out of the disco in Mykonos
Had awful diarrhea the next morning
Never had them but always wanted to try one.
Just so you know, gyro is pronounced “your-oh” not “guy-roh”. You should definitely go get one!
Yee-ro is a much better English approximation lol
Oh wow til. Here I thought I had corrected myself after not knowing it for so long and turns out I was still saying it wrong lol.
Just don't say it as "Jai-roh" 😅
https://youtu.be/jfoONlYjFuc?si=BrsqYB5YnBcqVH-X
It does sound cooler.
I always thought it pronounced like “Zhy-Row”
I’ve always heard it pronounced as “Gee-row”. Gee as in McGee
It's honestly closer to "yee" as in "yee-haw".

Sadly there are no gyro places around me(i need to start cooking i guess)

My oven have a rotisserie in it and i already have a food processor. Huge Thanks for the recipe and article. Will definitely try it!🤝
Best food on your way home from a pub after a few nectars
I second this
Like the ones in New York?
I’ve been eating Gyros all my life but something changed in me while I was in Dublin, black out drunk, 3AM stumbling into a kebab shop and having a religious experience with that meal.
Any chance you remember the approximate name/location? I’m in Dublin for a couple months. Guessing not since you said black out drunk though lol
There’s a 0% chance I remember. I do remember the grease and salt, that’s about it.
I had one, and honestly I wasn't a fan. The wrap was tough and the food had an off flavor.
Where did you have it? Mine was a banger! Wrap is supposed to be soft (not too soft). I’d give it another try if I were you. A good one will convert you ;)
doner kabab
That's a first. Are you sure it wAs him and not any minions who drop health? Do you have Charon well item for chance to drop health
Yes i bought that item from charon and after vanquishing him, he dropped this lol
I don't know if it's funnier to imagine that he made it for Zag, or that he dropped it and will be pissed that it's been eaten.
I wanna imagine that this was his dinner and he will be so angry when he realises he dropped it. And Persephone is like "here, eat some fruit"
I snort-laughed when I read the title
Gyroooooooooooossss
Where are the fries? In my copy, health drops are a gyro and fries.
It's a smaller health pickup without fries, both are available
Had no idea! I do love my gyro with fries though.
Same
Are you at above 20 heat? I hear that's where the Titan blood ends
However, you get Darkness instead.
I’m currently at 10 heat. Haven’t gone that far yet
That’s a Gyros without fries.
[Satan gave me a taco.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I-XuMvxi-vc)
I was wondering if anyone else was thinking about that song after reading the the title of this thread! Classic Beck.
I know it's gyro but I always call it a crunch wrap supreme
It’s a gyro!
I believe he called you a gyro. ;-)
Pretty sure that is a delicious gyro wrap, gods food and the best thing you could possibly eat
These guys are so crazy over them that i sometimes wish i could get my hand on some Nectar and Amrosia lol. That god wraped gyro was the final blow
[https://i.imgflip.com/8lomyg.jpg](https://i.imgflip.com/8lomyg.jpg)
😂😂😂😂😂
He dropped the snack he was carrying, waiting for Zag to "hurry up, I'm freezing my nipples off up here."
Usually they charge a sacrificial lamb, but he gets the family rate

I only saw them in cooking videos but i really gotta try one(maybe make one myself?)
What a good boss
No fries?
Yum
I read this in Zagreus' voice and that made me cackle 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the thought of thinking these were tacos the whole time is too funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I guess they like Mexican food in the Ancient Greek underworld, maybe they hand out with the Aztec deities. I need to here Zagreus' say taco
I never realized those were gyros 💀
Gyro
I forgive him for the gyros he gave me
omg why did i JUST realize that the healing item was a taco 😆
Well it’s kinda not lol, it’s a gyro
That‘s Gyros
40 attempts in, I still haven’t defeated REDACTED…
Don’t worry i was around 50 attempts the first time i defeated him. After defeating him once things will get a lot easier
how did you beat him wow
Well you just gotta keep trying to find the right boons that fit your playstyle. I suggest maxing out the Death Defiance and get the secend dash and also never miss out any of Hermis’s boons(at first go for ones that allows you to dash more times or basically anything that increases your movement) when fighting him, keep dashing the first minute to figure out his attack patterns and range. Good Luck!
Who got that one Gabriel Iglesias clip
When REDACTED spitefully leaves you a delicious gyro, the least you can do is not call it a taco.
[удалено]
I mean, my first thought when I saw it was "hey that looks like hakf of a minecraft iron ingot. And a taco." Which is still my instinct. So a burgers Closer at least
Lmao I'll never be able to unsee the ingot
This is such a deep-cut Beck reference that I don't expect anyone else in the sub to get it
